I went to a Lunch meeting Tuesday with the expectation of another so-so meal. It had just snowed…read moreanother 6 inches and was FREEZING outside. Instead, I was greeted by a large bowl of spring greens. Strange, I thought. It's February and -15 out and we are eating salad? I inserted the tongs and was surprised by pops of red, orange, yellow and black. There was fresh fruit hidden under the greens. Where do you find handsome blackberries and bright shiny strawberries this time of year? I sprinkled some sweet scented vinaigrette across the top and moved on to a warm dish of moist (some people have an aversion to this word, but is was) chicken. I may have added more than my share. I next encountered a mountain of flaky pull apart garlic bread. It was still warm (from the oven in my mind) and couldn't wait to peel the layers into my mouth. It may not be pc to do, but oh well. Finally, the glory of dessert. It's why everyone pays for lunches with subpar food. The hope that the dessert trumps what you have already eaten. The calories don't count as dessert because they are part of the meal. No guilt in my book. Cupcakes!! With a generous helping of delicious sky blue frosting and a little sunflower on top. Never have I been served kid friendly cupcakes at a business luncheon before. I sat down with my small hill of greens, fresh fruit, chicken, biscuits, and the glorious cupcake. I tried to rush through the meal but the salad was fresh, the dressing tangy, the chicken melted in my mouth. I used my fingers to peel the biscuits flaky layers and enjoyed the buttery taste. And finally, plate cleared as my mother taught me, I was alone with the cupcake. Against my childlike urges, I so maturely took my fork and cut a small bite from it's edge. Then another and another. Finally, I was left with an empty foil wrapped. I took my finger, wiped the frosting from the liner and promptly stuck it in my mouth. So much for manners! I have no recollection what the lunch meeting was about, but you can bet I will pay the association fee for the year and enjoy that lunch every month. Thanks Simply Sarahs, for making my day a little brighter!

You can purchase freshly baked and frosted cupcakes as well as pastries, pies, breakfast and lunch specials. Pie at Aunt Netters Cafe was recently rated as #4 in the nation just this Spring. We decided to sample some pie recently to see what pie in the top 10 of the nation tasted like. My husband ordered coconut cream and I ordered chocolate peanut butter. Let's start with the crust on both pies which was flaky and layered just like pastry crust should be. Now lets move to the whipped cream topping on both pies ~ freshly made by hand daily, nothing out of a can. The coconut cream pie had real coconut flakes in the center and toasted coconut flakes heavily sprinkled over the cream. Definitely rated #1 in my opinion. The chocolate peanut butter pie had a rich layer of chocolate cream and a layer of peanut butter cream, topped with the freshly made whipped cream. Deliciousness overload! In addition to the pie, we ordered the chicken fried chicken sandwich with onion rings. I haven't had freshly breaded and cooked onion rings in forever! The fried chicken sandwich is served with pickles, a large slice of tomato and a crispy leaf of lettuce. The sandwich was so large that I had enough for 2 more small meals after our visit. (I didn't want to eat too much of the sandwich, because the pie was my number 1 mission, as well it should be for any diner. Arrive early. We arrived at 11:20am for lunch. Customers started arriving shortly after us, then gradually faster. By noon, all tables in the dining room were full and people were taking food out the door with them. Prices are very reasonable, portions are large, everything is fresh. While you are at Lecompton, you can also visit the Kansas territorial capital directly across the street from the cafe.

Wings were massive! More like chicken legs! The crinkle fries were cooked nicely. The Mac N Cheese Corn was exactly that, very literal take on the side dish. House BBQ sauces were delish and paired nicely with the local brews we were inhaling. Super nice knowledgeable ladies at the Norseman Brewery location! Great lunch menu and smoked meats!

This KB's Smokehouse is located inside the Norsemen Brewing Company located in North Topeka at 830 N. Kansas Ave. The food is brought into the Norsemen Brewing Company 5 days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. I had the smoked bacon-wrapped meatloaf sandwich and a side of macaroni & cheese. My friends had a pulled pork sandwich with sides of baked beans and french fries. The sandwiches are served with a butter hamburger bun. Everything was good and I would go back in the future, next time I am in North Topeka. The meatloaf sandwich was $9. The pulled pork sandwich was $8 and the sides are $3. Other sandwiches include brisket. KB's Smokehouse is located on the far east side of the building past the big bar if you enter fro Kansas Avenue. You purchase your feed, then get your beverages from the Norsemen Brewing Company and dine there. KB's Smokehouse employees bring you the food. It was difficult to order the day we dined there. KB's Smokehouse did not have a menu, so we all had to gather around the young man who explained what sandwiches and sides were available for purchase that day. As a result the young man had to repeat himself 4 times. When we received our food, there were some errors in the order, but we worked them out easily. My only complaint is that we were told the price of the sandwich, but we were not told that the choice of side was an extra charge. It would have been nice to know that every side is in addition to the price of your sandwich. I recommend to KB's Smokehouse that they purchase a large white or black board that they can display the food that is available that day.
