I used to frequent this fine establishment back in my university days. I always remember it as being dark, with cheap beer and good music. I happened to find myself back in Ottawa last weekend and ended up here for mostly nostalgic purposes. This place is way classier than it used to be, which I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not? Either way, the food was tasty and the beer was reasonable. The service? Pretty meh in my opinion. When I came back to Ottawa today, I walked around for so long in the pouring rain looking for this spot. I'll never forget the name again. They didn't have that dish, but I got the steak special. If the weather is warm and I'm in the market, this is my favourite place to go for a pint. The bar has a great dark ambiance, the staff is nice and the beer selection and food quality is decent. But that's not why I come here. I love their patio. Not the one that wraps around the front and juts out in the ByWard Market, but the one down their little alley that has large wooden overhead beams strewn with vines creating a light leaking and dreamy patio. This is the place to go talk with friends or read a book if you're in the area. The quality of their sangria is pretty good too. read more

I was surprised by how great my experience was. We ordered off the late night menu which had actual meals on it as opposed to the snack/side dish type meals that are often offered on late night menus at other bars. We both ordered fried chicken sandwiches, his with a salad and mine with fries and the portions were HUGE and the food was absolutely delicious making the price reasonable. Conversely, the drink prices seemed a little too high for a pub. The staff was alright, attentive but nothing extra special and the wait for the food was a bit long. The restaurant layout was a bit cramped, but otherwise nice, if a bit generic. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd definitely come back for a late night meal in the future. read more

A market favourite, The Brig menu changes often and is continually delicious. Edemame and Crispy Sausage Won Tons have vanished and remaining selections are equally tasty. This weekend we had our 45 person wedding at the Armada Lounge, which is a private party space above the brig pub. It was fantastic. The owners and staff were extremely accommodating, before and after the event, all our questions and needs were met . They were very flexible and happy to do anything we asked for the event. The food was great! We have several dozen canapés served- everyone raved about them, the quality and taste was outstanding. The service was out of this world! My guests felt completely taken care of and catered to. The space itself was lovely and we got so many compliments from our guests on the vibe and feel of the place. I would highly recommend private events at the Armada lounge- I am already trying to figure out what event I can host there again!!!! read more

There are a lot of different pubs to choose from at Bywards market but I'm glad we chose this one! The service was really great! Usually when you're on a patio you get overlooked but the waitress was extremely pleasant and always made sure to check our table! Right now there is a Canada 150 event happening right outside the restaurant where you can enjoy watching performers while you eat! The location is in a less busy area than some of the other pubs which I really liked! I would definitely recommend the crispy chicken for dinner! It was amazing!!! read more

We went late on a Sunday night so it was a little dead. We started with the calamari which was good - the dip is the bomb. I got a plain burger and it was pretty damn tasty. Phenomenal place, highly recommended! When a friend asked if we could go I was hesitant, as Byward Market is usually overpriced and not that great. So glad we went anyway! The service was excellent, we were seated right away on the back patio (a perfect place when it's hot). There were three of us and we shared four starters: General Tso's Cauliflower, Banh Mi Steak Lettuce Wraps, the Nachos, and Crab Cakes with peach salsa. What an amazing meal. Everything was fresh and delicious with a wide range of flavours. We left comfortably full, and it was affordable! For sure we'll be back, determined to try everything on the menu. The Brig seems to be one of the least cool places in the market on a weeknight evening. More better for me because it was not crowded and not noisy on a recent Wednesday. Nice fireplace on a cold night. Decent burger and sweet potato fries. Very pleasant service. Also, recently went to a holiday party in their upstairs function room. Nice open area with its own bar. I've been living in Ottawa for a few years, had never been to the Brig Pub before. I stopped by last week for lunch with a friend and had the Thai Salmon dish -- it was delicious. we were served by Megan, who was very helpful and friendly, and patiently walked me through the menu while answering all of my silly questions. I have already promised the wife we'd come back soon for our next date night so she can also experience the Pub's incredible food and great service! I already know what I'll be ordering. One thing I would suggest would be to look at their menu before going, as it's tricky to choose which dish to order from all the options. read more

Came here for Happy Hour as the More Business Info on Yelp mentioned it the restaurant has Happy Hour, but it does not. The restaurant was not busy at all. We ordered the nachos to share and while $13 is a steep price for what you get, the nachos were crispy and tasty. The blue cheese burger ($15) and crispy chicken ($13) were both very delicious. My friends and I were supposed to hit up Heart & Crown but the line was out the door so we came here after standing inside a crowded Moscow Tea Room for far too long. Decent pub. We got a burger with fries, and a side salad. The salad dressing was really tasty, but the salad leaves were kind of rotted, which was a bit of a downer. (It was probably the kind you get in those plastic containers in a grocery store, and the dark leaves always go bad first!) The burger was pretty good though, as were the fries. The waiter sort of messed up our order as well, but fixed it, and we didn't pay for her error in the end. The Brig is my go to Downtown hotspot when I am in the mood for ample portions of delicious food, excellent cocktails made with quality spirits (no prince igor or royal reserve used here! ) and great selection of local craft beer. The Brig is reasonably priced and has an upscale feel with the coziness of a pub. Great patio for a hot summers night but even if it is a little cool the patio heaters keep it very comfortable. Burger is great, sweet potato fries are nice, but arrived at the table slightly cool, and service could be better overall. (There were very few patrons in the pub at the time we entered, but still had a considerable wait for our orders). Based on what I read on yelp before coming in this seems consistent with others, and as long as you aren't in a rush, it's a nice place to sit and chat over a pint. read more

Was in town visiting and this place was highly recommended. Was kind of disappointing. We went on Saturday night between 10pm and 11pm. Wasn't very busy, had no issues getting a table for 8 people. We went because we were told there was dancing, but that didn't start until 11:30pm. I wish we had stayed to see what that was like but our group wanted to love on. Didn't have any food, just drinks.
