The baked goods are amazing. Like for real. The cookies and croissants and scones and cream puffs are amazing. My one gripe is that the bread is room temp bc they cook it at 4am. I love me some fresh out of the oven bread thats so warm that it makes condensation in the bag. That's not what they have. Regardless, bread is good. Rye is sharp. Sourdough is sour. Today we had a memorial service for my brother that passed away. We put together a very basic luncheon for after the service. Just sandwiches and salads and a few desserts. All the bread came from the bread chef. And believe me it was the star of the show for our little show. Never have I gotten so many compliments on the bread at a get-together. I have to tell you, for what feels like the middle of nowhere Ohio, this is an unexpected delight. The plan was to meet my family at the bakery at 2pm on a Saturday, but I arrived a little early so I could do a little bonus eating and pre-family shopping. The bottom line is that in my first visit, I got to try a ridiculous number of things. Some I ate in the shop, others I brought home. #1) My absolute favorite was the 6-Grain loaf made from 100% whole grain. I had the bakery slice this loaf for me, so I could put it in the freezer and enjoy it over the next few weeks. But when I got home, I toasted up a slice, slathered on some butter, and was in heaven. #2) The brownie. I only got one bite because my daughter ate the rest. She's a bit of a brownie snob, and is typically a good sharer. What I got to taste was flawless. #3) Next, the cream puffs. If The Bread Chef had a way of filling these to order, they would be absolutely incredible. But even pre-filled and stored in the refrigerator, the pastry was remarkably crisp. Thankfully, these are made in a small size so you can eat one as a special treat, and still not blow your diet for the day. But this is not the place for a diet. #4) That bread pudding. Oh dear. The crisp caramelized glaze on the top is fantastic. It looks much smaller in the case, but when you bring out this dense dessert of day old breads soaked in dairy, eggs, and sugar, it grows to the point that it demands to be shared with a group. Perhaps when the pudding is warmed, it loosens up a bit and isn't quite so dense. We were advised to warm it up using the microwave, but I would sooner microwave a pizza than nuke a custard. #5) The 24-hour sourdough loaf is another gorgeous sight to behold. The external crust is magnificent. The flavor is there too. What I want is a little more elasticity and life in the crumb. Yes, there are some holes in the bread, but I want more! This could have something to do with the bakery adjusting for the local market, because I was told in advance by the clerk that since this is artisanal bread, it will contain some holes. #6) When I saw a summer veggie topped flatbread on the shelf and a sign that said you could buy the whole thing or simply a half, I asked for half of their very last one. The joke was on me, because that monstrous slab had already been cut in half. Again, this would have been better warmed up. And again, I was pointed to the microwave. But I would rather microwave a fruit tart than nuke a flatbread. #7) The one thing I wouldn't get again are the croissants. I tried a plain one and a chocolate filled one. Since I'm not a baker, I can't quite tell you where these went wrong. They look amazing. Such lift. So many layers. Even the pull and elasticity of the center is top notch. But all the same, there is an important crispness that was lacking. Did I say this wasn't the place for a diet? It's not. And I've been eating that sourdough for days. Now we're into the toast phase, and I do wish it made better toast. Again, if I were a baker, I might be able to diagnose the issue more precisely. Part of me suspects it has something to do with the protein level of the flour, but I'm out of my depth here. I hear there's a 100% rye loaf too. That sounds dense and flat and right up my alley. As Youngstown is a convenient meeting point for my family between MI and PA, I have high hopes of returning to The Bread Chef and trying some more of their delicious baked goods. Almond toast... I have been wanting to visit this store since 2018, but have never made it there when they are open. It did not disappoint. The croissants were amazing. They rivaled my favorites from a French bakery in Pittsburgh. I especially loved the apricot cream cheese one. The sour dough bread is one of the best I've ever had. Wow what a great find ! This is a small storefront in a small stripmall, that you can easily drive past; however, GPS it and go ! The ladies who work here clearly put love and hard work in making a wide variety of breads on a daily basis. I've ordered a few different items in various visits, and every type of bread has been amazing. Last visit I ordered a sourdough loaf, which the staff cut for me thick sliced (they can also cut thin slice). Wow what a great bread ! Nice crusty, good texture, super yummy. I've stopped here a few times and have never been disappointing. Every time I've walked in the door no matter who is working, they always greeted me with a smile and excellent service. I usually stop in around 7:30 - 8:00 AM and grab half of the tomato and cheese bread along with a pastry. This morning i came in and purchased a delicious almond butter croissant for only $2.00 and the gentleman working offered me a free cup of coffee with it. I absolutely love walking in this place and they deserve a lot more attention. read more

This place is fantastic. I have tried just about every bread and have yet to be disappointed. Their sourdough and ciabatta are the best I have ever had. They also have some excellent sweets, especially the bread pudding and sweet cream croissants. The staff is extremely friendly. A tiny gem hidden in the midst of the chaos surrounding the boardman poland area. I've tried and loved everything on the menu. Everything is made fresh without preservatives. The bread is out in open baskets so you can see what you're getting. They do many varieties of flat breads. I love the grilled veggie flatbread, it's delicious. The homemade granola is divine. They have delicious shortbread cookies and numerous croissants to choose from. I'd recommend the almond croissant, flaky and delicious. This is a five star bakery using the standards of Youngstown and the Mid-west. It might be a three or four star In an area like Portland OR (which is still pretty good) and if it were in Portland, the clientele and the competition might push the quality up. As the name suggests, its focus is on artisanal bread. There are several first rate artisanal bakeries in Pittsburgh (60 miles away) and The Bread Chef compares favorably. It is far and away the best place to buy bread in greater Youngstown but it does have to respond to the Youngstown Market ... with products that are expected locally or with concessions to quality when adherence to quality would just not be appreciated by the local clientele. Some of the fermentation times are too short for maximum flavor and there is deference paid to the thin crust - airy crumb loaf that is desired by the local Italo-American community who are used to a much inferior and widely available product generically called Italian Bread. The focaccia needs work ... it is just nondescript. There are lots of ways to make great focaccia yet The Bread Chef has chosen to make it ordinary when they could make it much better ... but their customers like it. On the whole, I have always been able to find a bread that i enjoy eating and I am pleased to serve it to friends and even to my really picky offspring who know artisanal baked goods even better than I do. My favorite product is the Wednesday special, Roasted Potato bread. It is tough to make because the moisture variations in the potatoes from day to day make it hard to get consistency but the result is usually quite good and one of the best breads I know of for eating with a hearty soup or a really zesty sauce. This is a bakery that really tries hard to walk the line between great bread and bread that is desired and appreciated by a relatively unsophisticated buying public. It is as good as it can be here in Youngstown. It should be supported. read more

There are some places, it's best advised that one not visit when hungry! This is one of them. The Bread Chef was recommended to us when we stopped by a local coffee shop to grab a cup of coffee on on our way out of town. Although it was a little off the beaten path from the main drag, I'm glad we diverged from our original itinerary. Located in a newer strip mall, the bakery has limited seating space, but an excellent selection of baked goods and speciality products. My eyes immediately spotted the cream puffs, an item one rarely sees on menus these days even in nice restaurants. They were delicious! They have a variety of savory breads and my son and hubby enjoyed these for an impromptu breakfast. As we were heading home, we stocked up on scones (flaky and so delicious), granola, biscotti and bread.
