Thai pepper and Louisiana cane Old Fashioned
Jeanne P.

Quaint and tucked to the side / behind Spoke and Hub, you'll find The Brakes bar, an intimate gem with high quality and seasonal cocktails. High quality liquor and a diverse and creative crafting are what you will find here. It's not meant for large groups looking to pound drinks - the drinks are carefully prepared and even use garnishes and elements from their personal herb garden located outside. Staff will recommend something to please your pallet if you guide them with your preferred flavors, and their list of changing cocktails will always provide you with choices. I enjoyed an amazing Thai Pepper and Louisiana Cane Old Fashioned on my visit. The perfect blend included sweet sugar and glorious heat of the pepper. Seating is comfy with a long conversation sofa and tables, barstools, and maybe some additional seating I didn't see. The blackout curtains and shades provide appropriate ambiance. If you're looking for something a little more chill and delightfully intimate, drop in sometime.

One of Baton Rouge's hidden gems, my coworker raved about this spot leading me to come here with…read moreher and try it out myself for dinner. Now after dining here myself, I'm a firm believer! Apparently, they have an annual limited fixed-price menu ($48) with excellent options over three courses. Unfortunately that option was not available when we dined here in early November. So we went for the pimento cheese balls and I ordered the soup de jour which was a butternut squash bisque. Both items were savory and delicious. The pimento cheese balls is fried and served over some hibiscus pepper jelly which gives a nice sweet kick to the creaminess of the cheese. The bisque is creamy and has a nutty squash punch. We loved both very much! For entrees, I debated between the pork chop and sous vide rabbit. I went with the rabbit since I never had rabbit before (weird right?) and I'm glad I went with it. The rabbit has a nice crispy texture with a gamey taste yet the meat was quite tender when cutting into it. The apple chutney compliments the rabbit well and the butternut squash side and purple cabbage garnish make it a well-rounded dish. My friend/coworker ordered the grilled gulf fish which comes with a creamy risotto. The fish is super tender and pairs well with the risotto with an olive oil finish. We were both satisfyingly stuffed from our meal although we wish we saved room for dessert. Definitely next time! They have an extensive wine and cocktail list. The Strawberry Oaxacan is a favorite along with the Kiwi Daquiri due to the exotic fruit flavors. Sadly I couldn't snap any pictures as I was caught up in sipping my Century Oak Zinfandel. I'm glad they have a Red Zinfandel which is my preferred wine of choice as it's easy to sip and not as full-bodied. Gotta give my friend props for bringing me here. We're already talking about coming here again next time I have an assignment in Baton Rouge. I can't wait!

Our food tasted fantastic and I would be back. The GF hush puppies were amazing! A must try even if you are not GF. We also had some drinks that were also delicious. Our waiter was super nice and gave us some great recommendations as far as food goes. I absolutely love how quiet the place was and super nice inside. I would highly recommend eating here!

I love that they offer a variety of boards you can share, and their drink options are great too. You can sit inside or outside, and they even have live music on some nights, which adds to the atmosphere. The service has always been great every time I've gone. They also have the cutest merchandise available for purchase. It's a great place for date night, hanging out with friends, celebrating birthdays or anniversaries, or just spending time with family. Highly recommend!

When you read the reviews below, most people know what this restaurant is and how it works. My…read moreresponse is less harsh about the service or it's overpriced charcuterie board concept. I have lived in BR for 6 years now. Many departments at LSU take guests there and in that time, Building 5 has done nothing to improve its parking lot. The restaurant sits underneath an overpass and the parking is pothole marked unpaved gravel. This means that there is no room for wheelchairs or accommodations for anyone who is differently-abled to get into the restaurant. The whole restaurant makes no room for handicapped persons. On the occasion I did get food, the food is slightly overpriced. All meats were cooked adequately but the food was lukewarm probably owing to sitting in the kitchen under the heat lamp than being delivered promptly. When I have gone, I regularly have to ask for refills on soda as I am the designated driver often for department functions. Servers pay you no heed if you do not buy alcohol. Because I go here because of academic reasons, I would barely go here myself. I've been here many times and found it wanting. It's an ableist place in its infrastructure. It's fine I'm atmosphere as a cocktail bar but would little recommend it to people I call friend.

The parking can be a bit tricky for some who haven't been yet but it's easy to figure out. I love the atmosphere and how they pay attention to a wide variety of scenes from Emo and Goth Nights to Disco and Fairy Raves. The staff is always nice and the service runs smooth every time. The bar seems to provide drinks quickly throughout the night. I've never had a bad experience at Chelsea's even when I lost my phone and I will continue to attend concerts and shows there. I've brought all my friends and they've all had a great time as well. Definitely in my go to places for a fun night out alone or with friends!

Waze tends to send to through some areas I don't want to drive solo through, so I usually detour. Parking can be slightly sketch at night, and be aware if you're in heels, you may have to park in gravel/large rocks under the interstate. You are parking at your own risk, so don't leave valuables out. Staff is always there to greet you with a smile. I've never encountered any employee there who didn't seem to be in a pretty good mood. The floor space is large with lots of standing room. Depending on the event, they'll throw some high top tables around. There are two bars, each pretty big, and the bartenders are very attentive, looking around for the next person to serve (which is good because I am short and can get lost under some people). The drinks are a bit pricey, but the liquor is pretty good with a variety. The private events I have attended were well run and staff members were very helpful for those who rented it. The public events are also very well done. Chelsea's Live brings in some pretty big names, so keep your eye out for future events. They also highlight local artists. The stage is high enough to where you can see who's on it no matter where you are in the place. I do wish it was a little easier to get to, but it is certainly worth attending some great shows there!
