This is one of the longest standing bars in downtown Baton Rouge. They've survived all the craziness of the early 2020's and kept their name. Relaxed upscale atmosphere with fresh ingredient ingenious cocktails. Friendly staff that can even create something for you on the fly. The interior has exposed brick front wall, exposed wooden columns, and is tastefully decorated with old pictures of Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra to give you that real home feel. There's a relatively long bar with barstools and comfortable lounge seating in the main room. There is a small patio outback for the beautiful days, and there's an upstairs (usually reserved for private parties) with its own bar and an overlook of the Mississippi River. We walked in for a drink but there wasn't a single place at the bar to sit and since the only available seating was a velvet sofa we went to another place. This place is super cute and has great music, so I've been wanting to try it. A few days ago I came in, around 5ish to grab a beer. There was only a few seats empty at the bar, so I took one of the 2 available that didn't have people seated next to them. I sit on down, and feel a sharp jab in the back of my thigh. I lean my hand on the stool to get up and im jabbed in the hand! Wtf!?! I hop quickly off the stool, shocked and in a little pain- and notice that the wooden seat is off the stool, and there's 4 pointy screws sticking up instead! Other customers hear me yelp and comment "omg why is that stool there?" And the bartender notices, and tells me that the couple that is seated in the couch area is using the seat to put their drinks on the ottoman. No apology, no omg let me make this up to you, or ask if your ok and maybe grab you a drink or something. Nope, nothing. She should have removed the stool so no one could possibly sit on it and hurt themselves... like have some common sense! It pissed me off royally so I'm not sure if I would go back. Oh, it's LADIES night! One of my favorite bars to go to when I'm in town! My coworker told me about there French 75's and said they where no JOKE! So, of course, being a #boozer I had to give it a try. We swung by on a Thursday(ladies night) for $5 select cocktails left with a great buzz and cool history lesson. When first walking in I realized I loved the setup lounge chairs in the front a backbench area and stairs that lead to an upstairs area but the bar is what called our name. I got there a little late my friends had already started drinking one got wine the other got a cosmo and of course my friend got the French 75 she had been raving about. Well, I had French 75s before but they didn't wow me so I was hesitant to try it first. While I was debating our bartender Curtis with a "K" was so fun and laid back he taught me about the meaning behind the French 75 and telling me it's supposed to back a punch! Along with the fact he great makes a strong drink! So I kept that in mind started with a lemon drop martini and it was great and so I got the French 75 and man did it pack the bunch he said it would. Several months ago, I walked past The River Room, and took notice of their outside chalkboard at this classy lounge with comfy chairs. It said something to the effect of: Try our Whiskey, which is twice your age, and served to you by a person half your age. :) I didn't get around to going in until a few days ago. Maybe it's because The River Room doesn't serve food, and I was otherwise distracted by the Draft Room (beer) nearby. I sat down to relax, ordered a whiskey-based cocktail and enjoyed watching the world go by. Next time, I'll bring friends and try not to drink alone. :) read more

I like this place. It used to be Red Star. RS used to be the hipster place for cheap drinks and open-mic/karaoke, but I love how they transformed it into the now up-scale River Room. If you're looking for a place to dance and be wild, I don't think you'll find it here. We were only here for a total of 20 minutes during our scavenger hunt, but it a nice casual lounge for friends to hang out and chill. I love the miscellaneous chairs/couches for you to comfortably lounge in. The music wasn't loud, but created a nice ambience. It is sort of tucked away, but still quite near all the actions of BatonRouge's Third Street. Definitely have this place bookmarked for future trips! read more

Such a breath of fresh air (literally because it even smells new in there) and a perfect new addition to the downtown Baton Rouge night life scene. I strolled over there (with a friend) on a Friday night after leaving another event and was so glad that we ventured over. It was extraordinary from every angle and I couldn't help but stand there in shock of the complete transformation this bar did from The Red Star Bar. Just about a year ago it was a completely different place. Though I was a fan of the Red Star, I am an even bigger fan of The River Room. With no intention of staying long, it was just too cozy and inviting not to stick around. One would say that the the prices for cocktails are a tad pricey, especially in comparison to what was formerly there. You are paying for the atmosphere there because it's classy (even the bathrooms were redone and super clean) and presented the ultimate chill vibe. Do you know what I loved about it most? I was obsessed with the fact that the music was not overly loud and I could actually hear the person I was speaking to without yelling in their ear! It reminded me of a laid-back hotel bar. There is even an outdoor patio in the rear and a lovely bench set right in front of the entrance. There are enough bars downtown that play loud music, if you enjoy that sort of thing, but if you wan an environment that is the complete opposite, The River Room is your spot! read more

Nice low-key feel to this lounge! Dropped by with some co-workers on a quiet Tuesday night after a conference and were pleasantly surprised that the special was $8 cocktails that night. No complaints there. The bartenders were a little slow but the drinks were pretty decent, especially at the price. The lounge itself has ample seating with a mix between bar seating and some couches/sofas spread throughout the joint. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're just looking for a nice drink and conversation while trying to get away from some loud, packed bars. read more

As far as bars go, this one was completely awesome! You might even call it a cocktail lounge. Such a relaxing atmosphere and perfect after a long, not so great day! Formerly the Red Star bar, the person who took over it did a total 180 on this place! It's clean, cozy, and elegant all at the same time! The bar staff there were knowledgeable about their drinks and had some great recommendations. As always, I have to comment about the bathrooms. They were beautiful and superclean! Also, it had a lovely little outdoor seating area in the back. Very intimate setting! I will definitely be revisiting sometime soon! read more

The cocktails are detailed and delicious, the atmosphere is intimate, and most of the bartenders are great. However, there was a female bartender, I think her name was Zena, who has continuously had a bad attitude and frequently ignored other customers and even coworkers. Usually I don't write reviews but I felt the need to after seeing this multiple times. Maybe this was a new bartender, to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I am hesitant to return to this bar knowing I can get better service elsewhere. read more

I have no problem paying $10-12 / cocktail, but i expect quality from a bar that is going to charge me that much. To me the River Room is just another bar trying to cash in on whiskey's popularity without actually putting out a quality product. The Manhattan I ordered was undrinkable (ANY whiskey bar should know that vermouth spoils and should be kept refrigerated). After watching the staff make other drinks I decided I would not given them another chance to win me over. Bartenders were nice and attentive, but did not appear to have basic cocktail making techniques in their possession other than pouring & shaking ingredients. My advice, if you are going to spend $10-12 for list cocktail, then just go to Lock & Key (or Olive or Twist). MUCH larger selections, prices the same (if not cheaper, TRR's Whiskey River is essentially the same as the Bee Sting Smash at L&K, but the Bee Sting Smash is $10 not $12), and their bartenders are extremely knowledgable on crafting cocktails (not just pouring drinks). read more

New bar in downtown BR. The inside, including the bathrooms, has been remodeled. I have to say it was one of the nicest and cleanest bathrooms I've seen in a bar. The lounge area had several areas with tables and a mixture of plush chairs and couches. Very comfortable and relaxing environment. Nice wine, beer and alcohol menu. Large selection of Bourbons and Whiskey. The website bills the establishment as a whiskey and scotch lounge. We were disappointed that the speciality drink menu only had a few drinks with whiskey, scotch or bourbon. Would have liked to see more supporting the whiskey/scotch theme. Stopped in here for drinks with a group of folks, only to find that someone had sort of taken over a large part of it for a 35th birthday party (do women normally put their friend's age in big candles on top of the cake? Is that a catty thing to do?). So that was pretty weird, but I doubt it happens every day. Worth mentioning, but I'm not factoring it in to my score. First, allow me to state that there is nothing particularly wrong with The River Room. The cocktails are made well. The furniture is nice - arguably too nice for a bar, though, and arranged in ways that limit the amount of people you can interact with. They play entirely tolerable music from a vinyl selection geared to pander to the nostalgic, not-quite-midlife-crisis leanings of older, salaried millennials. If you were in downtown Baton Rouge and wanted to go to a cocktail bar, this one would treat you right. There's just nothing wowie zowie about it, you know? The rather cozy porch came closest, but nothing really captured me. There is nothing about the experience of The River Room you couldn't recreate by bringing your closest friends and an Aquafina bottle full of vodka to Pottery Barn. read more

Very nice bar with rotating specials. I had the Botanist and my husband had a Levee Breaker. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the sunshine. They have ashtrays available for the smokers ( and they sell cigars). I highly recommend stopping in to check out their extensive bourbon and whisky selection. And their wines. AND their scotch. This place has a lot to offer. I didn't see any loud televisions, but they did have some nice music at a reasonable volume. read more

I went to The River Room to hold a client meeting a week or so ago. I went in, not knowing what to expect -- I wasn't a frequent customer at Red Star, but I was familiar with the set-up. The interior has been completely remodeled and it is beautiful. It's immediately apparent that this is an upscale place that prides themselves in providing quality atmosphere, drinks and service. The bartender was very helpful, providing suggestions and informed me on the specials available that day. I love sampling Old Fashioneds around town, as I have bartended for the past 8 years and I love whiskey. Any old fashioned properly crafted should take about 3 minutes to make, and it did. Came out in a timely manner, and the bartender offered to bring it to me if I'd like to sit down. She did a great job in making me and my clients feel welcome and at home. The drink itself was delicious. It is hard to satisfy my craving for an old fashioned because I know how to make it and I know how I like it. This one was wonderful. Flavorful, without being too sweet and the fruit was bruised, not muddled to pieces like some places serve them. (they may not know any better). It was $10 and I had Buffalo Trace -- good value for quality whiskey. The music and atmosphere matches the quality of the cocktail and the owners were friendly and attentive. Great addition to the downtown bar scene and Baton Rouge bar scene as a whole. 10/10 Will be back. read more
