I had a very upsetting experience at Mother's Lounge during pub quiz night…read more I am autistic. I arrived late, did not have a team, and was standing alone in the corner trying to be unobtrusive. There was a small stage with a folding table where the quiz host was asking questions. Between questions, music would play while people wrote down answers, and I was singing along quietly. Staff told me to move away from the stage, and I did. Then they told me I was not allowed to sing along with the songs between questions and called it disruptive. The situation escalated from there. The context matters. This was a bar that does karaoke regularly, and there was already a loud song playing between quiz questions while people were writing down answers. I was singing along to music that was already in the room, not trying to interrupt the quiz or perform over anyone. I also stood as far away from the quiz participants as I could without going outside, and when I sang louder than softly, I turned toward the wall/corner because I was trying not to project into the room. Maybe the sound carried more than I realized, but my intention and my behavior were not careless or hostile. When I became visibly upset, they threatened to call the police if I did not leave immediately. I said I needed five minutes to gather myself and my belongings. They refused and told me I had to leave right then or they would call the cops. That is when I raised my voice. I understand venues have rules. But there is a big difference between enforcing rules and escalating an overwhelmed disabled customer who is trying to comply. This was humiliating and frightening, and I hope ownership takes disability awareness and de-escalation seriously.

Discover Baton Rouge's Best-Kept Secret: A Hidden Gem Underneath the City…read more Tucked beneath Azteca's Mexican Restaurant and nestled right on the edge of the Mississippi River, this isn't your average dive bar. Since the 1930s, this historic spot has been serving up cheap, strong drinks in a cozy, basement hideaway. It's off the beaten path, and its entrance is a little tricky to find - just the way you want your dive bars to be. Once you do find it, prepare for a throwback to a time when things were simpler: dark hallways lit by a few twinkling Christmas lights, leading you into a dimly lit, welcoming space. The bar is stocked with an impressive selection of scotch, and the staff is as friendly as they come. It's a place where everyone knows your name, and the drinks come strong and cheap. The vibe is laid-back, with darts, a jukebox, and a pool room that's a little too fancy to be considered "divey" -- but hey, that's part of its charm. This is the local hangout, a true haven for Baton Rouge's service industry crowd and anyone who just wants to enjoy a drink in peace, away from the downtown hustle. Oh, and did we mention the drink specials? This place knows how to throw a party: SIN Night on Sundays (yes, it's as fun as it sounds) Ladies Night on Mondays, with FREE drinks for women from 9-11 PM Reverse Happy Hour on Tuesdays, where the drinks get cheaper every hour Bingo Night on Thursdays And, if you're out late, they're the only bar open after 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays! Now, technically, it's a speakeasy post-Covid, but getting in is easy: just scan the QR code on the door, and they'll email you a code to enter. Once you're in, it's like you've entered your own secret spot, away from the crowds. Whether you're a dive bar connoisseur, a fan of strong drinks, or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience, this hidden gem has something for everyone. So, grab your guest pass or--better yet--become a member and make this your new favorite spot in Baton Rouge. You won't regret it.
