I tried a few other screenwriting classes before I found Timothy, and I think they were a waste of money compared to what I get out of one session with Timothy. He's kind of like a script therapist. He doesn't just fix sentence structure or other cosmetic things (although he does do that, too). He goes deep into the story and characters to get at the root of what I am trying to say and helps me say it as effectively as possible. He pushes me to go further when I'm playing it safe. His criticisms are constructive, but never harsh. (I'm a sensitive writer, after all!) I feel deeply lucky and grateful that I stumbled upon his website during a Google search and am certain he will be a positive force in my writing for many years. You're in good hands with Timothy.

His support and guidance, along with quick feedback via email, have been instrumental in my progress. Timothy is a talented teacher, and an experienced screenwriter, so his notes are more like little teaching moments on the craft. I've read a ton of books and attended numerous seminars (including UCLA) and learned more in his workshops about the art/process of screenwriting than all those resources combined. Maybe it's my style of learning (more hands on), but I find Timothy's workshop inspiring and motivating. It makes me want to keep writing!

I have been taking classes at Kimball Studio for years. If you're an actor committed to growing or…read moreare just beginning and want to learn everything you need to know, I'd be doing a disservice to you by saying anything less than--you are so lucky to have found it. As a fellow new to the studio classmate said to me recently, "I'm so grateful to have found this place, I just wish I had found it sooner." Kimball Studio is for the serious actor committed to growing and learning some serious on-camera chops that will get you noticed in the room as a professional. Thanks to the studio I have learned so much over the years that have led me to build relationships with casting directors and book roles. The On-Camera class taught me everything about technique, how to tackle tricky sides, while also learning what really works for me and what my strengths are while working on my weaknesses or getting rid of habits that do not work on screen. The Scene Study class was incredible for building confidence to show up on set and working that muscle of delivering lines with some complicated blocking--everything from performing surgery in a hospital to surveilling multiple rooms with gun in hand in search of a terrorist. Ballistics is the Improv class that keeps me on my toes after years and makes me discover more and more about myself and our wonderful craft. It is terrifying (in the best way) and thrilling and makes you so quick to think on your feet that you learn to be a master of taking direction. It also constantly reminds me about the fun and wonder of the craft. I'd be lost without it. What I love also is that if you need help with launching your career, advice, self-tapes, meeting casting directors, the studio covers all aspects of the business. What sets Kimball Studio apart? The people. The coaches--Kelly, Janine, Dan and Jamie--are brilliant and bring their passion, professionalism, experience and make their notes personal to you and where you are so that you know that they genuinely want to see you grow. It's all shared with kindness and grace. As for the colleagues, I have rarely encountered such an incredible group of committed artists that are open, warm, kind and selfless. There's a supportive energy that is incredible and it not only helps you grow as a person and artist but also makes working off of each other a gift. You feel that everyone is rooting for you. Is this studio for everyone? No. If the idea of a supportive space to commit and grow as an artist doesn't sound appealing, it's probably not for you. If you're a serious actor looking for growth and a place for your best self to shine through, you're going to be as grateful as I am to call it your home.

I have graduated into the Advanced workshop and find it wonderful. The focus is on applying the work of the exercises to audition situations of today. If you stick with it, you will be working on readings and scenes with working actors with representation, and on the path to doing that yourself. The Advanced Workshop is more individualized. We are working on cold readings at the moment, and I am free to choose my own material. I am choosing to work on things that ask me to portray actions and emotions that I don't feel very comfortable with, and I feel that I have a safe space in which to work on them. When someone (including me) misses the mark, he calls them out, but not in a way that is shaming or humiliating as is the case with so many programs. There are always examples, suggestions, constructive criticism, etc., and he does not pit students against each other. Also some acting programs are very discouraging about auditioning. Ted doesn't have any problem with students auditioning and getting work at any point, and in the advanced workshop, there's an expectation that you start to put yourself out there and try to get some work and/or representation, if you don't already have it. Right now there are two students, of whom I am aware, that have representation in the regular classes.

I was buzzing for days afterward, I wanted to learn more. I googled comedy classes and the American Comedy Institute popped up. I discovered the one year program and saw the cost, it was slightly out of my budget, but I applied and I got a small scholarship. I packed up and moved across the country. I stayed with family, which meant a 3 hour round trip just to get to classes 4 nights a week. I met incredible people, I had a lot of fun. But most of all, I learned a lot about comedy and myself, from learning how to be more comfortable in my body and working in an ensemble in improv class. To collaborating in sketch comedy class, to writing solid jokes and performing them in New York City, it was a great life experience for me. The director of the school, Stephen Rosenfield, has a knack for really helping me understand and develop comedically. The most important thing he taught me was to tend my own fire. Thank you all for such a great experience and for all the funny wisdom!

Are you serious? I'll grant that this is 'ok' for 1st time people with stage fright. But that's…read moreabout it. The truth is there are better places that are all about getting you the necessary experience than ACI. 1. Does ACI have open mic affiliations? No, because they want you to stay at their bi-monthly gig at Broadway Comedy Club. They should be on top of all - yes, ALL - the open mics, clubs and producers. 2. You need to know the difference between 'practice makes perfect' and 'practice, practice, practice'!!!!! They're not encouraging their students to hit open mics or showcases, and for evidence I simply site the total absence of ACI students at shows I attend. 3. Their Broadway Comedy Club has both a cover AND a minimum. You can attend, meaning perform, at better clubs where there is no minimum but just a slightly ($20) cover. You ALWAYS spend more at Broadway, which has to be among NYC's worst clubs. Proof? Try The Stand on Third Ave, b/w 19-20. I've performed there. Not only are the comics better than ACI, The Stand has a full restaurant AND a full bar. Every club that I have ever seen offers videos of your gig for a nominal fee. Last I checked, ACI did the same but they MAILED YOU A GODDAMN DVD!!!! So, if you want to give standup a shot, do this: 1. Get a notebook. Small one. 2. Lookup 'BadSlava.com. This is a website listing EVERY SINGLE OPEN MIC in the city. 3. Go to an open mic. Your first FIVE assignments are to JUST GO and WATCH. Just WATCH. 80% watching. 10% listening. And 10% questioning. You're NOT PERFORMING. You're observing. Getting a feel. Eventually go to Laughing Buddha. Google them. They have close to 20 open mics a week. Just go and show support. I think it's $5 plus you buy a drink. Then you'll be 'ready' yourself. And in a MUCH better position to ask if you need to drop over $400 on a 'class' in comedy. As for another reviewer's claim that world famous comics return to write with Stephen, I only say, "Buyer, beware, and don't take everything you read at face value! The truth can be quite shocking." Trust me: I have been shocked.

Some of her own techniques (such as the 10 to 1 to help boil emotion, the I'M SO PISSED) are ones I still practice daily. Penny cares. She's dedicated her life to the passion of acting. She's an acting teacher gem! She's someone who fights to keep artistic integrity alive in our industry, all the while keeping you engaged with your eyes on the prize for self growth. And! She prepares you to be able to work at a rapid pace that is expected of you as you elevate in the industry (and to be able to keep getting work too!). Their master-class is always shifting. You're always learning something new to add to your tool-box from different techniques: Chekhov, Meisner, Stanislavski, Wynn Handman, to name a few. You'll work on plays, films, television, script breakdown and analysis, camera technique, acting techniques (substitutions, endowments, triggers), and Shakespeare! Her training will help you be able to seamlessly apply your craft to any acting medium or platform your next job is (i.e. stage work, television acting vs film acting, etc.). It's the actor's dream learning environment! By investing your time in PTS, you're getting the opportunity to explore and learn what works for you under the helpful eye of Penny and Hank. For the 3-4 years I studied with them continuously, I learned how to memorize rapidly while still injecting life/truth and finding the joy of acting in every audition, scene, shoot, performance, and class I did. She is also very supportive and motivational, but stern and tough when she needs to be. It's all constructive! I still recommend her to any actor or actress I come across. PTS have given me the foundation I need to have the confidence to be the actor I wanna be and tackle almost any obstacle. I speak very fondly of them, and still will pop in from time to time for helpful coaching or a to work on something in a safe space. I've…read morewritten other glowing reviews- I wanted to write a new google review since the last one was three years ago, but there isn't a way to do that. I was moved to write today because my son is taking a week long "camp" this week at an ATNY satellite location, HeART in Motion, in Ridgewood. It's a Broadway music, singing and choreography themed camp and it's somewhat out of my son's comfort zone. He was a little nervous about it because while he is a musician and singer-songwriter, he's been having trouble navigating the puberty voice change. He's also been in plays like Annie (as Rooster), Aladdin in Aladdin, Mr Wormwood in Matilda and Sir Dennis Galahad in Spam A Lot, he isn't necessarily a "Broadway kid". He doesn't have a Broadway style voice. He's more Shawn Mendes than Ben Platt. I didn't know what this week was going to be like for him, especially because, honestly, the kind of talent ATNY pulls is extraordinary, especially in the Broadway genre. I've heard kids sing at ATNY cabaret nights that I can't believe are kids and that they aren't already on Broadway. My son brings something different at these cabaret shows, which is awesome, but to sing Broadway is not his forte or his go-to. However, he does want to learn. He wants to grow and get better. Carl Anthony Tramon is teaching this week's camp. He is amazing. He's a great teacher, who knows how to keep them on-track, doesn't let them take the easy way out, and challenges them to take on songs they didn't know they had the chops to sing. The kids LOVE him. He really knows how to make a personal connection with them, but still have their respect as a teacher. My son came home from the first day loving it. I listened for about forty-five minutes today when he was giving them each their song. He gave my son something that is going to be challenging, a little difficult, but if he can nail it, it will be a performance that will really boost his confidence. It stretches him as a singer, an artist, and performer in general to take this song on and make it his own. I'm so happy I signed him up for this. He wasn't fully on board at first because it's the week before school when his schedule will be rigorous. But he had a great time yesterday and I can tell it was a great class today too. I can't wait to see the culmination of what this week has taught them all. I love ATNY and the skills they give to kids. Whether your child wants to be on tv, Broadway, sing, dance, act, or if they're just doing it for fun, you know it's money well spent. You know Todd Etelson and the rest of his staff really care about the kids, want them to challenge themselves and to succeed. You're never just a number or a dollar sign to them. I would encourage any parent to give ATNY a shot if your child is interested in doing anything performance related.
