Screenwriting Theory into Practice.
If you have an idea for a screenplay or have written sections of a screenplay, Timothy's workshop is the place to be! Timothy is a master script developer of all genres (comedy, drama, horror, tragedy, rom/com) for shorts, TV pilots or features. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of scripts and an eagle eye for the type of detail that determines which scripts work and why. Furthermore, he is genuinely interested in seeing his students succeed with each and every project. In other words, it's not about him. It's about you and your development as a screenwriter.
This is my 4th session with Timothy in his Blueprint Screenwriting Group and I'm loving it more than ever. Why? Timothy takes a unique approach to the business of screenwriting, a disciplined approach that has gleaned many successful outcomes for his students and their work. Without divulging his methodology, I'll state quite simply that if your logline does not work, you will not receive a carte blanche to proceed to the next step. Instead, he will work with you (and your classmates will work with you) in your conceptualization of your project to reveal potential pitfalls in your basic assumptions about your work.
Timothy does not assign boilerplate assignments each week; instead, each assignment is tailor-made to the individual and his/her project. However, deadlines are firmly enforced, so you'll have to make it a point to get your work in on time for peer review. I only mention this because the approach that Timothy takes is that of a Writer's Room in which we all provide constructive criticism into what works, what doesn't and what could be improved.
If you approach the workshop from the standpoint that this is real work (look at it as if it were a part-time job) and that you will have to revise your work, perhaps multiple times before you get a thumb's up, you'll likely come away with a far superior script than you initially started with or even dreamed of.
Personally, all of the workshop participants I've met have been wonderful. In this small, intimate group setting, we engage in a lot of sharing and probing into scene creation and execution. Finally, we attempt to create convincing narratives for the cinematic experience. It's inspiring how much everyone attempts to help a fellow writer progress in his/her screenwriting assignments. This process works because it's a reciprocal experience and there are no surly egos involved.
Don't be surprised if at the end of the session, real friendships are forged, new collaborations take place and your unique voice emerges.
A word of advice: sign up early because Timothy's workshops often contain many repeat participants.
In sum, after you take one of Timothy's workshops, you'll understand why so many scripts just get tossed into the trash heap, while your own screenplay will flourish and surpass, by many notches, the average script out for review. Don't be afraid to take the plunge! You'll be surprised and pleased by what you will accomplish! read more
