Once again heading back down 49 from the Delta and looking for quick lunch options, Yelp reviews helped me target the Blue Rooster. A slight deviation into Flora down First street and one lap around the block. The sign was so small we missed it and the parking lot is torn up and under renovation. Not an easy place to find at first. The small amount of signage tells you that this is a place only the locals are ment to know about. For those of you who look on Yelp for this place the Big Nasty is no longer on the menus. However it is available as a custom order if you want to try it. It's the photo of the Big Nasty and the name that drew me in. The cooks recommendation of their signature burger persuaded my choice. I went for the Fire House. Grilled home made burger patty with the choice of plump and juicy or smashed. Melted cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and pickles on a jalapeño bun. I got the green chilies on the side. The owner recommended that because they buy fresh and can never determine the heat. Great idea. I tasted first and then layered the sweet peppery heat to my liking. It also came with dipping sauce options for the fries. I went with the Mississippi style comeback sauce. Found myself topping the chilies with it. What a great tasting, burger. Well seasoned patty, great cheese and salad combo and the spice and zing from the peppers complemented the comeback. The Blue Rooster is a worth while and totally tasty burger detour if you are passing Flora around lunch time. Another local gem. read more

We've heard about this place for years but never come to Flora. We were headed home from Indianola and decided to give it a try. Let me say that this was some of the friendliest staff ever. They were so invested in making sure we had a great experience. It was a guy and 2 ladies. All equally friendly. Hand pattied burgers. Yes!!! Mike got the flame thrower with the hand cut fries. He said "delicious". I had the rooster burger with hand cut sweet potato fries dipped in ranch. The onion was sweet and mild, tender butter lettuce and what appeared to be a homegrown hot house tomato. Impressive considering it's March 1. I personally felt the bun was a little heavy compared to the meat and enjoyed mine with the top of a jalapeño cheddar bun only. A really great burger. Sweet and creamy banana pudding. There is no better burger in Mississippi than the Flame Thrower from Blue Rooster. I'm Canadian living in Colorado, I visit MS a few times a year and ALWAYS trek to Flora for this burger. It's a must-have if you're in the area or can drive an hour or two :). Hours can be limited, and space is a premium since this is a tiny little spot on the side of the road next to the train tracks. Love the food and the environment- it's all good. Definitely check it out. read more

We stopped here for a late lunch on our way to Gulf Shores. My husband had the Philly cheesesteak and loved it. Their homemade chips were great too. My burger was good. My kids loved the chalkboard wall, and it was a great way for them to pass the time while we waited for our food. Since we got there around 1:00, they were out of several things -- onion rings for one. We wished we could have tried those! read more

I am so happy that this diamond in the rough has survived the Covid Experience. The staff is always friendly and very attentive. One of the best features has always been the build your own burger. My husband and sons love to do this with their favorite item to add being nacho cheese. They also put it on their fries. Tonight we were informed that the owner/manager decided against restocking it and it wasn't currently available. Unfortunately, this really impacted our overall experience. Not made it bad, but definitely dampened the excitement around a meal that we were looking forward to. Several tables around seemed to also be confused as to why a restaurant would skimp on such an inexpensive item that adds so much to the fun of dining there. We will definitely be back. Blue Rooster has the best burgers around. I love burgers on an unhealthy level and it's really hard to find a 100% knock-your-socks-off delicious burger. My girlfriend and I always order The Little Bits sliders (with extra jalapeños) and share the meal - she chooses the side for herself to eat and I order the fried pickle spears appetizer as my side. Flora has always been a good home feeling place, whether your driving down a road, looking through a window on Main Street, or stopping by to eat a bite. That being said, the Food hands down has always been amazing, but we just went in yesterday and there was no waitresses greeting you at the door, sitting you at the table, coming by to talk to you about your day. Now it's just order at the front, fix your own drinks, get in get out kinda vibe. 20+ miles off Interstate I20 and worth the trip. Enjoy the drive through the countryside to reach hamburger heaven. Quaint little restaurant next to the train station. Heard great things about this restaurant until we arrived! It was limited seating and we signed in as required. Stood and anxiously waited to seated. Couple tables came available and we were seated. Only three groups were waiting and we were the second group. Once seated , ordered drinks and received those quickly enough. To our surprise one of the wait staff came back asked informed us we were not the next group. You can imagine our surprise. She asked to disembark our table. The Blue Rooster is a small burger/sandwich/wing cafe near downtown Flora, 20 minutes from I-220 in Jackson. It's capacity is 41. They have a build a burger menu (see pictures) that is the way to go. Best option: 8 oz. burger, bacon (&/or chili), BBQ sauce, shredded cheese & pepper jack cheese on a jalapeno chedder bun. The bun is actually sweet, not hot in any way. Not flame-grilled but fresh ground beef fried and juicy. Cooked however you like. Be sure to make your side the sweet potato waffle fries. The fried dill pickle spears are ok. They also have a steak sandwich, wings, a spicy "flaming" burger with some jalapenos & grilled onions and shredded steak topping ON your 8 oz burger. They also have a monstrousity called a "Big Nasty" that drops another 8 oz burger patty to the burger above. See the picture here. Come on....16 ounces of meat plus fixings is too big. The picture is shocking though. Any of the burgers fixed your way, will rival any other fried burger in the area. Definetely in the top 5 in the Jackson metro area. It's also easy to find. Take Hwy 49 North from I-220, pass the Indian Mound Rest Stop & the Petrified Forrest. Follow the signs for downtown Flora/Hwy 22 (turn right). I have ordered from here twice in 2014, several burgers, sandwiches, sides and appetizers at a time. Every sandwich and side has been exceptional. The burgers and sandwiches are excellent, no criticisms or suggestions. The sides are all great. The appetizers are equally good. The food is properly cooked, fresh, hot and very tasty.
