The Black Sparrow endeared itself to me when I saw a gimlet on their special drinks menu. Aw! Who's even making gimlets anymore? Let alone featuring gimlets on a special menu and presenting them as bright, shiny things? No one, except this awesome restaurant in Lafayette. Of course, I got the gimlet. I also got what some might call a "girl dinner," but what I call a "hot mom traveling alone dinner," which is fries and a Caesar salad. The fries were excellent: mostly crispy, but every so often a couple of mealy and soft fries were discovered, which was nice. The Caesar salad was good, and it came with whole croutons, which is typical. But really, The Black Sparrow? Your Caesar salad could have been elevated to excellent if the croutons were crushed into bread crumbs! Just saying! The Caesar had a lot of freshly grated parmesan cheese, which was a nice touch. A good Caesar salad needs a lotta parm, in my opinion. I just sat at the bar, so all I know is that rectangular space at the counter. Is there a restaurant beyond the bar at The Black Sparrow? I have no idea, but if you're looking to enjoy a little drink and a meal at the bar here, I think you'll have a good time. read more

We've tried several downtown spots and wanted to add this to the list. The Black Sparrow delivers a great mix of rustic historic charm with a hint of a time-traveling vibe. While the menu is comparatively limited, the food hit the mark. The appetizer wings with sweet chipotle were crisp and packed with flavor, the Remmy smashburger was cooked perfectly with great toppings, and the Nashville Hot Chicken had very good flavor despite leaning just a tad dry. A special shoutout to our server, listed on the receipt as "Player 1," who earned the high score for her top-tier level of service. This place has definitely earned a spot on our must-return list. read more

This is such a fun place to come. They have a food menu they keep refreshed, and always have fun drinks going. Really a fun spot to come to ring in the new year. They had a band and a dance floor going. Service was really friendly. Tasty fish and chips and a good pepperoni pizza with really large pepperoni. Service was friendly and fast. And the interior had a nice lived in vibe. Good place for someone who wanted good beer and to be able to have a conversation (rather than well drinks and pounding subwoofers). read more

We love the Sparrow and are here at least once a week. Great food and service always!

In town for work so I don't know anything. Checked for food places and came across TBS and ordered online and then walked down. Walked into the restaurant and was taken aback at the decor and bar. Very nice place! Very cozy! Bar tender was friendly and I said I had a take out. She got me a water and I read while it was prepped. She brought it over to me. I'll be back for sure next time I am in town!! read more

Visited during the Sunday brunch. Food was good but nothing special. Why 2 stars? The noise level in this place is off the charts. It registered in the danger zone on my app this morning at 11:30. 103 dBa. Everyone is shouting. It's insane. No way to enjoy a meal. If everyone used inside voices it might help. I knew the sound level was loud in here from previous visits- but nothing like today. We are older (70+) and it's a younger crowd, but seriously... read more

Meh, food was just ok. The service sucked. In fact one person in our group left because the server was just so unfriendly and rude. I had the gyro. I didn't care for the meat they used. The fries were not bad but I must have got the last scoop of the bin because they were all very small. Some of the other items ordered looked really good. My buddy enjoyed his burger. If I lived in the area I would give them another chance. read more

We had an extra special surprise with today's menu: Two of our favorite soups. Split Pea w/Bacon and Potato with Sausage. We ordered both and shared. They were awesome! I always enjoy the Chinmay Ales here this time I ordered the white ("tripel"). John had the pork tenderloin sandwich and I indulged in the Lamb and Couscous special. Great service. Had two glasses of Pinot Noir which were delicious and the Mediterranean salad. Don't sleep on it bc it was delicious! The Black Sparrow is a good bar and restaurant in downtown Lafayette IN. We ate there for lunch. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, and the service was good and attentive. They have two sections for indoor seating (at and around a large bar at the entry and several tables in the second room) and outdoor seating in front of the restaurant. I had the pork tenderloin sandwich (good - 7/10) and the chorizo potato soup (excellent with some good spice - 10/10). I recommend The Black Sparrow if you are looking for a good meal in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. read more

Revisiting the sparrow after a long absence. Still quirky and goth-like in a good way. Overall 3.5 stars. This visit had a helpful server who was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. The pizza quality is still good but a fraction less than I remember. BS isn't on my regular rotation anymore but it remains a Lafayette staple. They still have good beer selection, interesting cocktails (e.g. the Corpse Reviver), and many other unique menu items. read more

Wow! What a great lunch. Cuban was so on point and delicious. My friend enjoyed her gyro too. Fries were worth it and I'm not a big fry person. Seating could be more comfortable, but the food was so good. Can't wait to try more! Also, this is a bar with rock vibes. Makes it even better. read more

Tried this place for lunch. Won't be back. Just too many options nearby to settle for mediocrity. Staff seemed to be overwhelmed. Definitely needed another hand. Menu is small. Food was ok. Appetizer was burnt, $8.50 for a 12oz ipa draft is definitely pushing it read more

Came here on a random weeknight with coworkers. Luckily we arrived early enough to snag a larger table. Parking in downtown Lafayette is moderately difficult to find but mostly free after a certain time. The front door of this place is difficult to find as there are no obvious signs. Inside is eclectic hipster artsy but cozy and comfy. Service was laid back but friendly. Beer selection is out of this world! Food selection is limited especially desserts and a little pricey even for this small town. The fries on everyone's plates were cold and room temperature at best. This was disappointing. Sandwich breads were not warmed or toasted either. I would come back for the beer selection and ambiance but have to eat somewhere else. read more

Bacon wrapped El Diablo pizza are amazing!!! Super cool environment to hang out in would recommend it to all my friends.

Creative rotating specials and a great all time menu. My go to lunch order is a cup of their homemade soup (they always have a veg and meat option) and a bowl of fries with a side of pesto mayo. Best soup in town, and I've never had the same one twice. They have an eclectic beer menu, and a good selection of wines. When the weather is nice their street side dining is lovely. read more

In total, if this restaurant was half the cost, it would be okay. But for $30 a person (at least) for dinner, it's not worth it. For a place that's so expensive, the quality does not make sense. Service is slow, although the waitstaff is always running around, so they seem to just be short staffed. I was sitting facing the kitchen, and watched food sit ready for pickup for 20-40 minutes before being served. I got the special caprese salad, which was okay, but bland and unbalanced and definitely not worth 11 dollars. I also had a Paloma (special cocktail), and that was a delicious redeeming quality- the cocktails are the only reason i was able to give three stars. My friends had the fig and the pepperoni pizzas respectively, and other than sitting under the warming lights for twenty minutes they were good. The music is great for a busy bar, but too loud for what should be a dinner restaurant... you need to shout at the people at your table, 2 feet away from The tables are dirty and old, and the bathrooms were gross. read more

We were seated quickly, brought our cokes and water and took order right away. We stopped in downtown for a little shopping and found this place. Interior rustic industrial. Ordered Sambal Wings,El Diablo Pizza, and an order of the cannolis.
