All the Galway Bay bars are fairly samey, but this one is probably my favourite. Usually better music and the beer selection is always good. Last time I was in here I got Trouble Brewing Owl Day Pale Stout. Probably the nicest most interesting beer I have tasted in a long time; looks amber, like a pale ale but tastes like coffee and chocolate like a stout with a lovely hoppy aftertaste. it was weird. I wasn't sure if I liked it. had to keep drinking before I decided it was my favourite beer. Black Sheep is a nice place to drink and the food is good (just like the other Galway Bay bars). The Blacksheep is a great place to go for a casual bite to eat and to find tasty, interesting beers. I particularly like their sharing food. The chicken wings are yum and have a nice kick to them and their homemade chips are unreal. At €8 and €4 respectively these together make for a cheap shared meal between two. Keeping the food cheap lets you save more money to spend on the pricier than usual booze! I always enjoy a good peruse through the beer menu. They have lots of different types from IPAs to fruit beers to a 32% proof beer (that's sixty-something euro!!!). Ha! The staff are always happy to give recommendations too if you ask them. read more

Pre-cinema early meal here last week with a friend. I don't drink beer so the seemingly extensive range was lost on me but I plan to go back with my husband so he can try some! Food was really nice, I just went for wings and fries, portion was so enormous I couldn't finish it! Delicious chunky chips - really nicely seasoned and spicy wings with blue cheese dip on the side. Friend had a mixed platter that had some wings, chicken tender type things, onion rings and fries. 2 glasses of pretty decent Pinot Grigio each and we were all set: I will go back and try more food from the menu but I hope they do something about the service! I sat at the bar, which wasn't the most comfortable or nice area of the place but I didn't mind too much. Love the Black Sheep, went for the first time just before Christmas. Great food and an amazing choice of craft beers. Went back for new years and once again had a great experience. The thing about the black sheep is it has a great atmosphere, great beer and pretty good food as well. There is also a quieter area in the basement if you want a quiet chat somewhere. I'm a fan - as the star rating implies. Why not four stars - well, I knocked one off because of indifferent food the night I was there, and because they always seem just on the edge of not having enough staff (staff were seriously under pressure on the night I was there). I'm a fan of pretty much everything these guys do and have been at nearly off of their establishments at this stage, both in Dublin and Galway. I love it. They have a knack for combining modern ambience, with some traditions, creating a nice "feel" in a bar that does food and drink, and of course, they continue to champion real beer and real everything, and provide a genuine alternative and antidote to the superpub coors-lite mania that infected so many places. Black Sheep is handily positioned near to the Cinema on Parnell Street so providing an excellent real-beer then cinema or cinema then real-beer option for a night out. read more

As far as I'm concerned this is the perfect bar! The decor is great, there is always a warm atmosphere and friendly staff more than willing to give beer advice. They have a great selection of beers, which rotate on a regular basis (keep an eye on the Facebook page). The food here is also pretty good (posh pub grub) and reasonably priced. The three course set menu is €15 and the servings are generous. There is a downstairs area which also hosts comedy nights on a Thursday (HaHa Black Sheep Comedy Club). read more

I'll just copy and paste my review for Against the Grain, with the added note that it has the advantage that it is considerably closer to my house :) If, like me, you love beer and want to drink something other than Guinness or Carlsberg for a change, this is the place you want to go. They have about 2 dozen beers on draft and the most mainstream name you will find is Grolsch (which is pretty special here in Ireland anyway). The food menu is simple, as they proclaim themselves, but quite tasty and affordable. If you want something different, go here. I went there a couple of times for lunch when it just opened, because it advertised having food and there isn't much for lunch around these parts when you work nearby. At the time they were looking for a chef, and the food was horrible. They now advertise having good, simple food and they have a new menu. I realise it's a pub, but they are obviously also targeting lunchers. The place was really dirty, the tables were downright disgusting, ours had a peeling leather-type top and bits of rolled-up coasters. The first thing I asked was: "How is the coffee here?" I specified that I would gladly take tea instead if the coffee wasn't good (which is usually the case in pubs) but I was told it is "strong and black", made with organic beans and it was better than pub coffee so I decided to give it a go. I also ordered dessert (lemon posset) and my friend had a club sandwich. The top of the posset was tasty enough but unfortunately it was completely raw inside and I had to return it. As it turned all the other possets were the same so I went for a crumble, it was soggy but not too bad. The coffee was abysmal, not strong at all, just tasteless brown water. My friend said the sandwich was bland but the bread was really fresh. I feel a bit cheated because the Black Sheep pretends to be a good place for lunch but simply isn't. A good lunch place doesn't have to have fancy shmancy burgers and weird sandwiches, just tasty simple food and perhaps decent coffee. This place is just a pub. read more

This is hands down my favourite pub in Dublin. I stumbled across it a couple of years ago and been coming regularly since then. I love the laid back atmosphere and the craft beers (they sell my favourite ginger beer!). There is always a really nice buzz and mix of people and it's my favourite place to sit down and have a nice chat and a pint with friends...and maybe a board game since they also a great selection. More seats in the basement and probably the coolest feature too.. a fußball table! I always end up spending hours there playing against friends and complete strangers too. Great bar, great people. Loved this cool pub. They have a huge rotating selection of beers -- enough that it took me a few minutes to decide what I wanted. After I ordered my beer (a porter), I made a remark about enjoying different stouts, at which point the bartender talked about the white stout on their menu and offered me a free taste. They have a large amount of space and tables, and even have fun party games to play, such as Jenga, which I played for awhile. I went on a Tuesday evening, which apparently hosts a board game night around 6pm. There were a decent number of people in attendance, and they brought a good selection of legit board games, if that's your thing. I didn't end up being able to stay for that part, but if I were around on another Tuesday night, I totally would! Would definitely come back to this pub to try out lots of other beer selections that I just haven't seen at most of the other pubs. read more

The food in here is quite nice and the craft beer selection is top notch. The staff are friendly, there's a nice vibe and there is always a good crowd. Ideal for mid 20s to mid 30s. I wouldn't only point out 3 negatives with this place. 1) Seating, difficult to get, more than 3 people with you? Forget about it 2) Hot, so hot in there. Alright, the preface: so I'm from the westcoast of canada, bc vancouver and im the past decade or so, we've had an explosion of craft beer. Do you like beer, a lot? Do you enjoy trying multiple kinds? Ok - 85 different beers in bottle and 21-22 on tap. If you're a beer lover check this place out! And the red chicken curry... Wow soo good! Definitely a place worth stopping and having a few pints, if you are in dublin. Downside: pricey, but what craft brew isn't? Its like 5-6 euros per beer. Yes. I know. Came in here for a quick pint before the cinema and a quick pint afterwards too. Its a relaxed atmosphere with a sign near the door pertaining that neat dress is essential which is never a bad suggestion in this day and age! Unfortunately the plot of 'Gone Girl' starring Ben Affleck had unhinged my drinking arm and before i knew it the only thing that was gone was my beer amongst a shattering of glass along the ledge we were perched beside. As i was T..witfully mortified i quickly gathered the pieces of my camden wit soaked glass to make sure no injuries were sustained due to my error. I noticed the friendly barman quietly approach me with a glass of the same liquid i had just shared with the wood, the floor and my girlfriends i-phone. This is the kind of humane and unexpected action that would bring a tear to a glass eye. Thank you Black Sheep! The Blacksheep is my favorite pub in Dublin. The atmosphere is so chill and relax, very different from all the pubs in the famous temple bar. I would certainly enjoy one of them as well but when I need an excellent selection of beers, relax... Or even to have fun with friends, playing games and stuff, it is the place to go! Hidden gem! Jenga and beer, what could possibly go wrong! The Black Sheep, as others have mentioned, is a sister pub of Against the Grain, which I'm a fan of. It has a very similar beer menu but no Kriek (Belgian Cherry Beer) on tap here, only bottles. I really like the inside, it's simple but cozy, definitely reminiscent of cafe bars in France or Belgium. There are a few board games on offer which I'd say would be helpful to keep the conversation flowing on a first date. It's proximity to the cinema is another point in it's favour. It always annoyed me that there was never many good places to go around this area for a pint and a chat after a film other than the Woolshed which is pretty annoying during any kind of sporting occasion. If you bring in your ticket they'll give you a free beer taster thingy too! The food menu looks good, we just had some nibbles since it was Saturday afternoon and we were between meals. The hummus was tasty if a bit oily, the chips were chunky and delicious! I'm docking a star because they cleared away our bowls of chips when there was still a few left. Admittedly we had them ages at that point but I HATE when servers do that. We're not in a restaurant, we're in a pub and we will take our damn time if we please. Even when he went to take the bowl and I turned to my friend and said "do you want the last one?", he continued to take it away as I was reaching for it!! Do you have a crockery shortage? Lidl is just around the corner you know. I really hate wasting food. They also were having an issue with their lights that day and they kept flickering on and off which was annoying. Food (menu same as Against the Grain), but just as yummy. I ordered the Falafel burger and did not disappoint. Local beer, my husband was happy with the seasonal one tonight. I don't drink, so can't comment much about that. Atmosphere is great, it's a Friday night and the pub is packed. Music in background, space is much bigger than its sister pub. The staff are friendly. Best thing is, there's no tv, so we can actually talk to each other. *yay* Apparently there's table top gaming on here tomorrow, will be interesting to hear how that gets on. I have just been once to the Black sheep so far but I can sense that there are many more visits to come. The staff was super helpful and suggested super delicious beer from their selection, when I admitted that I had no idea what is good and what I liked. I probably would have liked all of them, but I was allowed to try it before so i decided to love it (sadly I can't remember what I had)/ We decided on some light Scrabbling and Jenga. This is currently my favourite watering-hole in Dublin City Centre, along with its sister bars Against The Grain and The Brew Dock. The idea is simple- great beers, simple food, laid-back atmosphere, no sports or loud music. It's a great place to catch up with friends. I was brought here by a mate of mine for a couple of mid week drinks last week and what a find! It's definitely not somewhere I would come across on my own as I'm not generally around this area but I know I'll be going out of my way to visit it in the future. The Black Sheep is a bar for people who like good craft beer. As previous posters have said, the list is big with lots of variety. Special mention to the "wheel of fortune" on the well for those of us that are indecisive and need some help choosing. It's a bit of fun, particularly with a group. There were quite a few tourists around on my visit on a Tuesday evening (around 8pm) and a great atmosphere - relaxed and fun. They serve food also but I didn't try on this visit. The Black Sheep is an amazing find off the glitz of O'Connell Street. With a plethora of craft beers, brewed in-house, we were bound to find a pint or two to match our meal. We did, thanks to a welcome tip from the lad waiting on our table. Pub grub, while always filling, has evolved in 15 years and The Black Sheep's fish and chips is like enjoying the grown-up version of our favorite childhood foods. The fish is tender, moist, and flaky. The beer batter crust has the perfect crunch factor, not oily, and soaks up every drop off the malt vinegar that I splashed in it's direction. The chips? They taste like potatoes! I know, you're thinking, "what else would they taste like?" The last few times I ate this meal elsewhere, the chips tasted like nothing. They literally had no taste. But The Black Sheep? Thick cut chips from whole potatoes, crisped on the outside and tender in the center, just begging for vinegar, as well. I won't be in town for long, but if I come back, I hope The Black Sheep will still be here. Everyone else in the area: keep giving them your business so I have a chance! read more

We went along to check out the buzz with the Black Sheep, one Sunday evening in January. The bar man was very helpful, the selection of drinks super vast, so help was needed to satisfy our Stout needs. We decided to try their burgers whilst there, I had a Vege Burger and himself a Steak Burger, both were very tasty, homemade vege pattie not this Quorn mumbo, and apparently the Steak burger was tasty! There was extra effort in the yummy fresh burger buns, and the homemade chunky chips were the clincher, delicious. Nice place to go for a pint and a bit of food, nothing amazing to rave about but thoroughly enjoyed relaxing on a Sunday evening. read more

Originally when i heard about "Against the Grain" extending themselves and opening up the "Black Sheep" on Capel street, i was really excited. Another pub with excellent beer and fantastic food, brilliant! One of the two was correct, they do have an excellent beer selection. The food however, was dreadfully disappointing. My husband god the cod and chips, both of which were under cooked. Soggy batter and al dente chips. I got the Falafel burger which i thought was lacking in flavor and again under cooked chips. I quite enjoy the food, in their sister pub, Against the grain. Hopefully adjustments will be made to bring the Black Sheep food up to standard. read more

I do wish the food was more interesting. This is no Chop House, or, for that matter, no Purty Kitchen or L Mulligan Grocer. The food will fill you. It's there to line your stomach, while you are entertained by the selection of beers. Try the lentil and sweet potato burger, it's the best of an average lot. As a mere pub, the place excels. Pretty sure they have every craft beer possible in this joint. This is a very hipster kinda place, felt a bit uncool being there, but was apart of a meetup group. The decor and ambience is quite nice. The general draft is on the expensive side, especially for capel st area. Then if you do want the craft beers, you pay for them - i.e. i love myself an innis and gunn beer, but was about 7€ for 300ml bottle - eek. I would say you want craft beer place - P. Great food and beer - flawless in those respects. But Lord above, please do something about the acoustics in the place - if more than ten people are in the establishment, people end up having to scream at each other just to make normal conversation.
