HIDDEN GEM. Don't go anywhere else. Initially just needed some air for my tires, and a much overdue general tune-up which another bike shop had quoted to cost $200. With as basic bike knowledge as one can have, I was able to tune-up my Cannondale and replace a brake cable thanks to volunteer Dave! Super helpful, patient, and attentive!! The visit cost $6 (you can also purchase a yearly membership for $50 for unlimited visits) & my cable cost $3. They really treat you well here! Come hungry for bike knowledge and you're provided all the tools you can think of, a working station, pro advice, and good background music to jam to while getting your hands all greased up (don't worry they provide you with gloves and aprons). I left so excited/accomplished about the project that I got home realizing I forgot to add air into my tires - the original reason I went haha. Deffos will be back for some future bike projects!

Great community/DIY bike repair shop! Bring your bike and they'll help you figure out what it needs in order to be in best working condition. They have some parts or you can bring your own and they'll help you install them.

my new Burning Man bike all beautifully assembled thanks to Tracey and Nasa at the Bike Kitchen!

WOW, The Bike Kitchen is a total gem in the city! It is run completely be volunteers so the hours are in evenings, Tuesday through Thursday, 6-9 pm and Saturdays, 12-3 pm. I went on Friday evening for "WTF Night," which is for female-identified people. I was greeted warmly by Tracey and Nasa. It was my first time at the shop and I immediately felt comfortable and at home, even though I am a complete newbie to working with bicycles. I paid $6 for a day pass although it makes total sense to sign up for the $50 membership if you visit at least nine times or more in a year. Tracey and Nasa both helped me assemble the last pieces of my bike that I bought for Burning Man. They were both super encouraging and by the end of the evening, I had a brand new bike assembled and some new-found confidence with my handy skills! I will definitely be back in the future - what an amazing place in the city!

I just built a bike. A real, actual, rideable bike. Not just rideable - beautiful (if I do say so myself). And it's all thanks to the wonderful staff at the Bike Kitchen I'm getting into bicycle touring, with the goal of pedaling cross country at some point, and I decided that I wanted to learn as much as I can about my bike by building it from scratch. But I was also on a budget, and know that building a bike from scratch can often be more expensive than buying new. Bike kitchen to the rescue! I was able to volunteer to earn a membership with them, and then volunteer some more to earn credit for parts to go on my bike. Then over the course of several weekends I coaxed my dream machine into existence. They taught me everything from putting the frame together to building the wheels (from separate hubs, spokes and rims), installing the drivetrain and adjusting the brakes. They gave lots of helpful tips about selecting components, and they didn't take away one bit of work from me - they TOLD me how to do everything, but I had to do the wrenching myself. I recommend their wheel-building class taught by Llana. She was a great teacher, has a lot of experience, paced the class well, and helped me make two perfect wheels on my first try. She also stayed THREE EXTRA HOURS after class with everyone, ON A SUNDAY, until we all had at least one decently true wheel. I challenge anyone to find that kind of dedication and service at a for-profit bike shop. One word of warning is to not judge the whole Bike Kitchen by your interaction with the first mechanic you meet. All the mechanics I've met were knowledgeable and helpful, but they have very different personalities. Some can be very personal and welcoming, while others can be downright distant and especially off putting to newcomers. My personal go-to mechanic was Jim - the oldest mechanic at the Kitchen, he worked most nights I was there. I'll now take a moment to say that, despite the above gushing, the BK is not perfect. They have had some staffing issues, sometimes making them open late, and recently forcing them to reduce Saturday hours permanently. But then again, the mechanics are VOLUNTEERING their time to help people with their bikes, so I really can't complain about a little inconsistency. Also, while they have a wonderful parts room with every kind of bicycle part you could want, you really have to work to find it - and sometimes, depending on the flow of donations, you may just need to buy new parts elsewhere. In the past I also would have said they REALLY need to work on their organization, but they just did a large scale purging of outdated and unusable parts that has really helped the situation. It's an ongoing process - if you really care, take an evening to volunteer and help them get things in order!

I love the Bike Kitchen. Such a cool community based program and space! It's one of the main places I miss now that I've moved to the East Coast. Let me tell you all about it. For just $40, you can sign up for a full year of access to the kitchen. You can also pay just $5 per day if you wish. I decided to take a chance on a friend's super old, junky bike for $25 and brought it to the Bike Kitchen to fix up. I recommend getting to the kitchen right when they open to make sure you get a work station. If they're full, you're out of luck, though sometimes people are there for just a little while and stations open up throughout the 3 hours they're open (6pm-9pm weekdays). I made the most of each visits though, and took 5-6 full 3 hours sessions to take my project bike from completely unridable to a pretty decent ride! Now let me tell you why they get 5 Stars. VOLUNTEERS. My goodness, the volunteers at SF Bike Kitchen are super great and knowledgeable. It's all about learning there: You're expected to do your own work, but it doesn't mean you're on your own. Volunteers roam the shop, constantly organizing parts, stripping donated bikes and frames, and making themselves available to answer questions. I especially want to give a shout out to Esther, JP & Robert (AKA Edward) who were there with me along the way as I learned all about how to fix up my bike. I went in knowing pretty much NOTHING about the inner workings of bikes and left each session feeling empowered and that I'd had a successful session. In the relatively short time I've had with them, I grew quite fond of the Tuesday night team. I really miss them! Do you know about bikes? Do you want to learn more? YOU can be a volunteer! And when you dedicate enough hours to volunteering at the shop, you can actually earn building your own bike for FREE! To sustain the community model of this non-profit, it takes sharing tools (and skills) of the trade with new volunteers who can carry on the work and keep the Bike Kitchen open. I plan to volunteer whenever I'm in SF and encourage everyone in the area to get over there and learn about bikes!

A local bike shop quoted me $300 to fix a used bike; at Bike Kitchen, I was able to get it running for $26. The Bike Kitchen is a great place to learn how to fix your bike and get expert advice and help from volunteers who work there.

They sell a kinda of curated goods from a small selection of tools, lubricants, snacks, and gear. I bought some very well fitted gloves there. What really impressed me was the way they operated the store. It got busy at one point and chilled out... then it got busy again, and they did not miss a beat! But on top of all of that, they were servicing bikes that had appointments or walked in, all at the same time! I was able to bring my bike in, but I also saw they had those bike repair racks in the front and back of the store - they're not playing around. I saw someone walk in with their bike listing off a bunch of stuff he wanted to look into fixing, and the staff person in the front immediately threw it on the repair rack and said 'let's take a look'. They also have this roller situation setup in the front where they can take your bike and run it in place to show what it does while in motion. This place means business and they are super friendly! I wish I had something like this closer to home, this store is doing a service to their local community.

My dog was still in the stroller, and I asked multiple times whether I should remove her. I was concerned about the weight on the tires and bearings while he was servicing it, and my dog was visibly uncomfortable with him lifting the stroller while she was inside. He picked up the stroller several times by the front wheel, which seemed awkward at the time. As soon as I left, I realized the front swivel wheel was no longer functioning properly. It now defaults to facing backwards (180°), and the tire rubs against the swivel with every turn. This made it extremely difficult to get my dog home, especially because she has mobility issues. The stroller is not a luxury item for us -- it's something I rely on every single day for my dog, groceries, laundry, and basic errands. When I told my son what happened, he mentioned that he had a similar experience at the same shop a couple of weeks ago. He and a friend brought in a bike with a brake issue. The shop offered to help and didn't charge them, but whatever was done made the bike worse. Sending a kid out with a bike in worse condition than it came in is a safety issue, especially since my son recently had a serious fall due to a mechanical problem. I understand that Spokeasy didn't charge us for these services, but free work still needs to be safe and competent. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. For these reasons, I can only give Spokeasy one star.
