I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly and tasted so delicious, I thought about going back a second time. Hubby had the duck which he loved and the portion was great. We went on a Sunday night and it was quite crowded but the wait wasn't too bad. We shared a dish of poutine that was delicious. That was the best thing we ordered though. I've eaten here at least four times... The location and feel are awesome. But I can't find a meal I really enjoy. It feels SO CLOSE to really enjoyable.... But can't find something I really like. The beer selection is great, but it seems that supercraft beer has taken over Stowe. You can get a topper at the sushi place...So it's everywhere. Horrible 1st time experience. My partner and I decided to have dinner here. When we arrived, the host stated it would be a 10 min wait to get a table outside. My partner gave his information and she stated she would text us when the table was ready. 15 min later, nothing. My partner went in and stated he hasn't received a text. The host seated us soon after. We sat down...and 10 min later, the waitress comes and brings us water and asked what we would like to drink. We gave our drink order, and after another 10 min of waiting, we still hadn't received our drinks and nobody had come out to ask for our food order. That's when we decided to get up and go. What an upsetting first time experience. Perhaps it was because it was closing time, but we arrived around 8:30pm and left at 9:15pm. As I turned when we were leaving, another waiter immediately came to close the umbrella. Perhaps that was their way of not serving us and make us leave because we came around closing time, but it that were to be the case, the hostess could have told us they were just about to close and we would have understood. Instead, they left us there with no attention or service for a total approximate wait time of of 40 min. That's pretty shitty. Would have loved to have had a great 1st time experience as visitors to Stowe, VT. read more

In the old days, we fondly remember "Pie in the Sky" which occupied this location for many years when our children were young. For the past year, we have avoided The Bench just because we do not like change, or to face children growing up. But recently, we became brave and entered this new place. This place is popular, and we waited for 40 minutes, but did not mind as the evening air was lovely. Once inside, we saw a new interior, with lower lighting and more seating options. We ordered the cheese burger which was excellent. The fries were the best I ever tasted, slightly crisp and tart. Daughter ordered the arugula salad, which was fine. We had a coke, which was refilled. Sometimes when a favorite place from early years closes, you never go back. In this case, we will return. I like the Bench. I would have only given 3 stars, but my wife told me 4 stars because she liked it alot. read more

We were in Stowe a couple of weeks ago and decided to try this place because of the strong reviews. We ordered the mussels and they were very good. For dinner we ordered the roast Duck. The Duck was fantastic and a great deal for 19.00. It was almost large enough for two people to share. We are from Chicago and that dish would go for $30.00 plus dollars here. The other great part of this restaurant is the draft beer list. They have some great beer on their list. Not being from Vermont I was able to get some beers I can't get in Chicago. Overall the experience was very good and highly recommend this place. The one thing is to get there early as it gets very busy. read more

Well not sure how to go about this review. I have nothing bad say about the place but nothing all that to remember either . We got a table outside but it's facing the parking lot so nothing great to view. The truffle fries were very good , a Clementine salad was ok , and the eggplant wasn't all that good. It might be considered good to a non Italian who might from from Stowe ... But for an 100% Italian from RI where we are known for Italian food , it's not that good. I visited the weekend right before their peak skiing/snowboarding season started in early December 2016.. The good: great location, right on the main Mountain road. I was greeted right away by a friendly hostess and seated by the window as I requested. Really cute and cozy setting inside, and rock and roll music was playing. Great! During lunch time their tables weren't filled to capacity, so that contributed to a relaxing mood. They have a full bar and a few TV screens above the bar like a standard bar should (this is with a little sarcastic tone). I went there for one thing: oven roast salmon with vegetables. They offer that only for dinner though. Yet, when I asked, my waitress was happily said she would check with chef. My server was great, as if she was born with a permanent smile on her face. And the chef accommodated. The entree was everything I was hoping for. Perfectly tender salmon with a crispy top. I mean, would you just look at the picture and tell me that it is not pretty?! The size of the salmon is more than enough even for someone who eats a lot like me. The veggies were complimenting the salmon very well. Corn, grape tomatoes, zucchinis, fingerling potatoes and one lone pearl onion. I don't know how the chef did it, but everything has the perfect texture for the respecting veggie. I enjoyed my malbec, which was poured to a generous size by my lovely waitress. Overall, I had a great afternoon here, listening to the music, watching snow falling, and enjoy the delicious food and drink. Now, the bad: just the word in the lyrics of Bon Jovi "you give love a bad name...". Not the Bench! read more

Exactly what we were looking for! We came here on a recommendation from our airbnb hosts, who listed this in their top three for places to get dinner locally. We opted to sit outside on the deck, cozying up to the excellent hard cider they had on tap. Lots of happy people around us, and conversations in English and French (all the Quebec folks from up North!). After dithering over the menu, the server told us, "I get the 'bench burger', because it's amazing." She was right: a burger with pork belly and other fixings, with more fries than I could finish, apparently cooked in a wood-fired kitchen. Soooooo good. We'd spent the day hiking and swimming in a waterfall and were more or less starving, and this hit the spot. Would most definitely come back, and try more of their awesome menu! read more

Came back based upon my previous review. Who better to recommend what I'd like than me?! As luck would have it, Jesse was our server again and again she was awesome. We ordered the mussels (2 orders!) on my previous recommendation - and they were awesome. And this time we tried the pizzas: Pipeline - the balsamic was great Rastaman - at first I thought this was going to be my favorite and then came The Bruce with pepperoni- definitely the group favorite and the Vermont smoke & cure pepperoni was phenomenal. Beer selection surprised me - loved it! (Not sure why I was surprised, I must have been in a wine mood last trip.) I was introduced to Zero Gravity Conehead and its amazing...and of course, a Shed Mountain Ale (love love.) Super happy with our visit to The Bench yet again. Im giving this 2 stars solely because the food was decent and came out fast. Our server was terrible. He acted as if he could careless and we actually felt like an inconvenience. Never brought me extra napkins, never asked if I wanted another drink even though I was eating a big messy burger and salty fries. I don't even think he looked me in the eye once. Great environment. Cool lights over the tables. Friendly staff. Had "the bench" burger with duck fat fries. Orders the burger medium rare and it was cooked to almost perfection. Great taste to the burger. It had a piece of pork belly on it. Although the pork belly had good flavor, it wasn't a very big piece and you didn't get it with every bite. This place has a really great selection. My wife and I visited this location twice in the weekend we stayed in VT. They have a ton of local beer and plenty of their food is cooked in their wood fired oven. We sat at the bar top in front of the oven and saw Alex cook so many different items in the oven at one time, and they all came out perfect! This place has multi-tasking and customer service DOWN. Normally, when I hear "artisinal pizza" I expect some small pizza with a smattering of cheese and toppings made to look pretty that leaves me disappointed. The Bench had artisinal pizza done right, with cheese covering the whole pie. The toppings were great, with the camelized onions done perfectly. My wife love her mushroom pizza (which I didn't touch because mushrooms are terrible). We got an edemame hummus plate that exceeded all expectations and actually gave the pizza a run for it's money. My wife loved her kale salad and was wishing she could make it at home. Also, they have a good selection of beers. I highly recommend The Bench and would rate it as a must visit if you are in Stowe. read more

It was the worst service we've had in a long, long time. We are in Stowe as part of our New England adventure from Texas and we stopped here because it was recommended by the motel. The service was awful. We went to get eat and get some authentic VT beers but it took so long it wasn't even worth it. I even asked the hostess to get our waitress and when she finally came to our area, she just carried on a conversation with the table next to us, totally ignoring us. I finally got up to get our drinks from the bar and she ran over to ask. It was just a bad experience which really stunk because we had had such a good time in Stowe. They must be good to the locals but tourist please stay away. read more

Great place with wonderful service. The 1/2 Duck was delicious with a breast filet and bone in leg. Lots of broccoli but could hardly find the fingerling potatoes and parsnips. Too much ice in the drinks. I had the Maple Run. Over all I would definitely come back. read more

It's pretty rare that I give a bad review. I've been in the food service business and I know how important word of mouth is. We are in Stowe for the first time and came here based on the reviews. We sat at the bar and were surprised right away by how unhappy the bartenders seemed. No smiling. Seemed impatient when we asked for recommendations on the beers. Didn't improve throughout the night. My husband had a veggie burger and fries, which were "fine." I had the roasted vegetables which were good. We would have stayed for a second beer but the vibe was meh. Overrated bad food. We came to The Bench for the last dinner in Stowe with family before heading back home, to Boston the next day- waited for a table for 20 minutes and had high expectations based on the reviews and recommendations. Once we were seated, we placed our order with our extremely 'short' waitress - a Pinnacle pizza to share and a mac n cheese for our picky eater. The pizza was bad, when I say bad, I mean bad. I'm, by no means, a snooty diner, I have reasonable expectations and when I pay $13 for a 12' veggie pie, I expect some flavor. The pizza was extremely salty, with a few mozzarella spots here and there and a few big chunks of tomatoes. The waitress was nowhere in sight so we could not express how we felt about the food so we ate a part of it . Then we ordered a Moss Glen pie once she showed up - a Mushroom pizza - slightly better but definitely over salted. No sure why! Our waitress, again MIA - took over 25 minutes to emerge again to ask us if we needed desserts . We paid and left. Not coming back and we don't recommend this place. read more

From the hostesses at the front who were very accommodating for our party of 6, to the server Maddy, to the amazing food, this is a must to go place in Stowe. I ordered the ravioli, which I broke my own rule about ordering Italian food at a non-Italian restaurant and I was glad I did. The ravioli was homemade with prosciutto and cheese stuffed inside and was accompanied by a delicious vodka sauce. We ordered the truffle fries and the poutine and both were delicious and put us into french fry overload. The rest of the family ordered the turkey burger, the bench burger and the mussels. All were very delicious. Maddy kept the drinks flowing and we were able to try a few beers that you can only get here in Vermont. The ambience is modern and we were admiring the lighting fixtures. Had a delicious meal here. Pizza was good and New York steak was too. They no longer had Rib Eye that we had come for. Ambiance was beautiful. Good selections of beers on tap. Bar area has tables but you are not allowed to sit there without informing the hostess first. Several parties kept being kicked out of the tables at the bar. The tall and thin server (Michelle?) was very very rude. Guess she is over people. There was absolutely nothing cordial about her. She stood at our table with her book and pen and we were supposed to be the first to speak I guess. No hello, no good bye, no thank you, plenty of dirty looks because she was pissed.
