Thursday night live entertainment is a fabulous addition (yes, we may have been singing along at our table) Tons of folks at the bar and tables filled fast. Seated quickly despite the line once the dining room opened (5-ish. Don't stress). Fabulous waitress and decent food. High end beef nachos were a treat but honestly, (too) spicy ranch/crema made it tough to really enjoy the flavors. Greens and beans (with shrimp added) was HUGE. I opted for chicken piccata that was fine but not the best ever. Chicken could have been thinner to be more tender and sauce needed some umph. Over all, great local atmosphere. We will be back but might try other dishes while we look for favorites. read more

do not ever come to the beef especially if you're a young college student or if you're a person who wants good service. when we came here we ordered the dinner entree (which is not cheap) it stated that it comes with a side and a soup. we confirmed with our waitress (emma) that there was no upcharge for the french onion soup sub and she confirmed that there was a dollar upcharge only for the french onion gratin. we also ordered the shrimp scampi (which is expected to come over noodles) and our waitress proceeded to ask if we wanted that over noodles or rice. we then asked for a side of roasted mushrooms and a soup with that. when the check comes we see there is a FIVE dollar charge for the mushrooms that we thought were a side. we nicely asked out waitress and she told us that the linguini was the side -- so the 28 dollar price tag for the shrimp scampi was for the 5 shrimps. the waitress did not tell us that the mushrooms were an additional charge and basic logic would have us assume that when she said "over noodles or rice" meant it came with the dish. there was also a one dollar upcharge for each soup. when we asked her she literally admitted she made a mistake and then said and I quote: "i made a mistake. what do you want me to do about it? do you want me to comp it" it was as simple as a two dollar comp. we were unhappy about the FIVE dollar mushrooms but we were gonna eat the cost. but the attitude of the staff was shocking as she was talking about us within earshot of the bathroom (thank you for that btw) she then disappeared and had another staff handle our check who also told us "there's upcharges for stuff at every restaurant" that's totally fine but it's basic expectation to make it clear what those costs are otherwise it's highway robbery. it's not that we can't afford the 5 dollars or two dollars but it's about basic respect and principle. read more

The food is pretty good, but the service and overall ambiance was seriously lacking to the point that this place is just OK. When you first enter, you walk past the bar and make your way to the host. They don't take reservations, so when we arrived, we were told 20 mins. So we idled at a table near the bar and got a couple drinks while we were waiting. The bartender was inattentive, standing with his back toward the patrons, so I'm not sure what that was about. Our wait ended up being over an hour to get a table. Once we got to our table, by the time we got our bread and appetizers, we waited another 30 minutes. It felt like an eternity before we finally go our food, and at that point we stopped counting and accepted our fate. Apparently, their usual chef was out sick, so I'd hope that's the main reason and this isn't typical. But it's still pretty unacceptable. The portion sizes were a bit absurd. My prime rib ($31) came with not just a side salad but a whole plate of linguine. I can't eat that much, so I would have rather just had a cheaper meal than the unnecessarily massive portions. But conversely, the horseradish honey shrimp appetizer ($14) was a few bites at best with just 5 pieces of shrimp. So you'll be starving waiting for your main dish but once it comes, you definitely won't be able to finish it (unless you have an endless stomach). The food itself was fairly good quality and tasty, but it felt overpriced for the presentation (very bland, just thrown on the plate) and overall experience. It's loud, dark, and cramped with low ceilings. It's definitely a hangout spot for local seniors with extra cash to burn, which is not an experience I would recommend, especially given the price. They did give all of us free dessert to compensate for the extra wait, which was appreciated but definitely not enough to win me over. If you get invited to eat here, hopefully, it's with someone you can really chat with because you might be there for a while. I personally would not come here again. read more

The best thing in this place is the table salt and the side salad dressing. The service was terribly slow and the place was certainly over the maximum capacity. Simply put, this place is fantastic. It's a little gem of a steak and fish joint nestled in the West side of Binghamton. The Beef has been at it...well, a long time. You can tell that the regulars have been coming here for many, many years. The service is very friendly, and they paid close attention to our table. As for the food, I'll first say that if they are offering their Philly Cheesesteak soup, you need to order a bowl. It's thick, there's real steak pieces in it, and it's not too salty. You can taste the bits of red pepper in there, too. I got the Delmonico (blackened, with bleu cheese crumbles), and my wife got the Prime Rib. We have eaten plenty of meat at the usual chains, such as Texas Roadhouse. We have also eaten at places like Chicago Cut, who charge over $90 for a similarly named cut. Grated, that's 35 day dry aged and world-class, but it serves for comparison. What you get are steaks that exceed the quality of the chains, but at a slightly better price. The Prime Rib was perfect - super tender, perfectly medium rare, and served au jus that was made from fresh beef bones. As for the Delmonico, that was also outstanding. Juicy, tender, and loaded with flavor. No flavor was taken too far, and all of it was balanced. We have no reason to go to the chain steak places in the Binghamton area again. The Beef is cozy, and has plenty of cold beer on tap. One piece of advice - try to get there early (i.e. before 6:00 PM). Locals flood in and it can get crowded. read more

Had dinner here last week and was very disappointed. The Manhattan I ordered was lacking Sweet vermouth. It's a Manhattan not a martini!! Manhattans are suppose to have a decent amount of vermouth to round out the whiskey!! Absolute garbage!! Doesn't anyone in this town know how to make a proper drink?? We went here because everyone boasted about the great beef. I was definitely not a fan of the place. You enter into a very small bar area and make your way to the back to let them know that you are there for dinner. They do not take names so how they know who comes first questioned me. Sure enough, people who came in AFTER us were seated before us. That was another dumb rule. No seating until the kitchen opened at 5. We finally were seated after the 5 pm seating. I ordered the 5oz. Prime rib and the hand cut potatoes. Prime rib was dry and barely any seasoning. The potatoes were hard around the edges and overly peppered! The salad was nice but the croutons could have broken a tooth! Very hard. Our waiter was okay. It was a what do you want, here's your food, here's your check. I will not be back. read more

We ADORE The Beef! Our son goes to Binghamton, and it's now on our permanent rotation. Staff and owners are WONDERFUL... professional, friendly and efficient. My wife and I stopped in for dinner for the first time on a Saturday, We arrived at 4:00pm and the bartender explained that the didingroom opened at 5:00. No worries, we sat at the bar and ordered. The Guinness was on tap, who could ask for anything better! As we drank, the owner came to the bar and was told we were waiting to have dinner, he smiled, greeted us and was busy preping things for the dinner service. At 5:00pm he promptly showed us to our seats, and thanked us for choosing The Beef for dinner. We had a fantastic meal, steak cooked to perfection, one of the best peices of fish I have had in a long time. Everything was served piping hot and with some of the nicest wait staff you could ever ask for. It was a truly wonderful dinner, I hope to become a "regular" for years to come. Pretty out-of-the-way restaurant at least for us. it's on the west side of the city of Binghamton New York. When we walked in it looked inviting, warm, small, and had an Irish feel. After a 5 minute wait someone came put a name on the list and said it would be a half hour. He said they had a new computer system and it was slowing them down. It as actually 50 mins. The salads were fresh and tasty and the croutons very flavorful, the home made bread was awesomely delicious. I wife and I both ordered the Delmonico steak dinner medium rare. They were perfect and tasted delicious. Steamed green beans I ask for work off so delicious. All in all it was a good experience, it seems like every time the waitress came to check we didn't see her again for 10 minutes. 2-1/2 hours total. Total with two glasses of wine and a 20% tip was $77. I would go again! read more

I'm trying to decide if I'm being over critical or if I'm over remember how good restaurants were several years ago. The BEEF was always such a wonderful place to go and enjoy a good meal at a reasonable price. I haven't been there for probably 10-15 years but the food just isn't what it use to be. In face, it's downright bad and it's become very pricey. There's nothing I love more then a good hearty French Onion Au Gratin Soup and The Beef had close to the best I've ever tried. I was so disappointed tonight when they brought mi e out tonight to find it looking like it was warmed up runny mud with freeze dried onions replacing actual onion and Parmesan cheese sprinkled over it and and into what they called soup with a large seasoned burnt slice of toast that was to big and soggy. I sent it back without eating much of it. I was asked if I didn't like it and I replied no I did not. No apology, just taken away fast. Our next course was a salad and surprisingly it was the best part of the whole meal. The salad no sooner got to our table when the waitress told us our entree was ready and if we would mind having it brought out. We said no and when she brought it out said that since we didn't have any sides she guessed the cooks just sent it out earlier then normal. There was no garnish and my husbands steak had been frozen and thawed. My prime rib was ordered medium and was more rare and cold and very tough. No dessert was ordered because we wanted to just get out of the restaurant. If you're not a regular, and by that I mean one of the 60+ age group that frequents this place and are greeted nicely and politely by the bartender and then the maître d'/whatever you call him who doesn't take names or write anything down, then don't bother going to this place. Great char flavor and smoky even though they don't have a wood fire grill. They had Asiago bacon smashed potatoes, which were delicious. The food was okay but the service was terrible. Was there this past weekend and was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. Took a very long time to get our food (several of the tables around us that came in after us where eating the main course before we got our salads). Asked for bread 3 times and was told it was in the oven yet other tables with a different waitress were being served bread. Never brought refills for our drinks even though we asked several times. As some others have mentioned, the food is good but the portion size of the sides is lacking. A small scoop of mashed potatoes was all that was given - about 4 bites worth. I can deal with the smaller portion size but the terrible service is what is going to keep me away from there. It isn't that hard to bring me a drink refill or some bread. read more
