My first time coming to the Beef House, and it did not disappoint!!! We had excellent service, our waitress answered all of my questions, was so incredibly kind and patient. We got the 8oz Ribeye, but not before having the delicious broccoli cheddar soup, delicious salad, AMAZING rolls and strawberry and apple butter to go with them, when I got to my ribeye, I could only take a couple of bites because of how full I was. I ordered it medium-well, it was served well done, but honestly, I wasn't bothered, they were super busy, so I didn't want to bring it up, and it tasted just as good as it would have if it were medium well! I am so sad I didn't know about this place before. It is so good! You will leaved STUFFED. The food is quality, and the staff were nice. It was very Covid friendly and safe. Masks are required, and the salad bar and food line is all Covid protected and safe. The rolls are to die for. The chicken and noodles are amazing. There is a million things on the menu. This is located right off the interstate so a perfect spot for anyone traveling. Also this is close to the Indiana/ Illinois state line. 3 miles to be exact! TONS of parking! Gas stations are nearby! We stopped here after a day at the Covered Bridge Festival. We got here just a little after 4 pm, so it was not crowded yet. The restaurant was pretty quiet and we were seated right next to a window, so we got to enjoy lovely views. Our servers name was Natasha M., she was wonderful. A server that kept our glasses full and was very attentive to all her tables/customers. She was very pleasant and helpful. My wife and I ordered from the Early Bird menu. I had the Broccoli Cheddar soup, the Caesar salad, the 5 oz. Ribeye steak with a baked Potato, while my wife had the Broccoli Cheddar soup, the house salad, and the Fried Alaskan Cod with homemade tartar sauce also with a baked potato. The yeast rolls came out hot and fresh from the oven, and our soups and salads arrived very soon after the rolls did. We had just literally each took the last bites of salad when the main courses arrived. We ate as much as we could and our server, Natasha was quickly there with to go containers. I highly recommend you try their bang bang shrimp for an appetizer. But don't go to crazy cause the yeast rolls they bring are amazing! Be sure to try the jam and apple butter! Just here to do my part in turning around the ratings on this restaurant. Everything about it was amazing! This place is pretty much by itself off the high way. It was super convenient they had FREE Tesla charging on site!! Score!! It is a unique concept. Has a full cafeteria but also really decent menu to order off of. I had every intention of eating light till I saw how they were known for steaks in addition to their famous rolls. Let's start with the rolls. When they say they're good, I didn't expect them to be so much better than other yeast rolls, but damn it yes! They were so much better! I loved how they came with jam and apple butter (possibly the best I've ever had) we started with the zucchini fries which were also unexpectedly delicious! Not too greasy and a good amount if actual vegetables in them. Topped with shredded cheese. The steak comes with a side, soup, and salad. I got the broccoli cheese and the ranch for the salad was just perfect. I loved the fresh cheese and what seamed like homemade croutons. The steak was very different from any steak I've ordered at a restaurant. The cook was perfect, it wasn't overly seasoned but had a great flavor. I ordered a ribeye and it was marbled but not too fatty like some cuts are. I wish I had space for dessert but the apple butter sufficed!! What a great experience here! read more

We were driving through on Monday to meet with the grandparents in IL and decided to grab some rolls as a side for dinner. When we pulled in we realized they were closed. A nice man (owner) named Bob was standing at the door and let us know they were closed. But... he said that he could help me with some rolls if frozen ones were ok. I followed him inside and got a couple packages. When people go above and beyond it really makes you realize the quality of the establishment and ownership. I really miss the salad bar!! As of February 22nd, 2022 there is no salad bar! My wife and I came for lunch today. They offer a cafeteria style lunch menu for 15.75. The 15.75 meal includes 1 entree, 2 sides, salad or soup, and a dessert. My wife and I decided to not opt for the cafeteria option. She ordered a Philly cheese steak cooked medium well with fries. I ordered the taco salad with just meat, lettuce, cheese, croutons, and extra cheese! We also ordered a side of potato salad and coleslaw which is available in a bowl during the cafeteria style lunch. I've been coming to the beef house for 30 plus years! The yeast rolls served with the meal are amazing. The strawberry jam and apple butter are to die for! The rolls and jam have not changed! The croutons are homemade and delicious! They still have French and poppyseed dressing. They still have potato salad that was on the salad bar. They have changed some things that I miss! The salad bar is gone! The lettuce they use for salad isn't the same. The lettuce appears to be bag lettuce. I believe it use to be fresh lettuce with romaine! The cheese for the salad isn't the same! The cheese now is a shredded mix. The coleslaw is different than what was on the salad bar. There was no basket of crackers at the table. My wife enjoyed her Philly steak sandwich and fries. I enjoyed the taco salad which comes in a tortilla shell! The taco meat had good flavor. I loved the croutons and the French and poppyseed dressing! I wouldn't order the taco salad again. Me and my girlfriends stopped by here after a trip to Sunnyside in Danville! The atmosphere was awesome and felt like I was stepping back in time which brought great memories of my grandparents! Apparently the service here is never quite up to par. Visited the Beef House again and was still not impressed by the service. None of the wait staff seem like they realllyyy want to be there. For a high-priced menu like it is, the service here should be top notch no matter the time of day or size of the party. Looks like a restaurant you would see Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. Everything inside seemed really old and it had an old smell. The buffet is, in fact, not a buffet it's just where you go up and get your own food. We got roast beef and mashed potatoes. Everything was so peppery it was spicy. The beef looked like compressed meat similar to small circles of lunch meat and it was very thin. The mashed potatoes were nothing special. My daughter got a kids macaroni and it tasted like nothing not cheese, not starch just chewy nothing. When we notified the hostess the food tasted off she said "well we like it." And that was it. It was very expensive the tasteless Mac and cheese was $8.50 for a cereal bowl half full of awful mush. Then as you walk out you can pay an extra five cents to get one piece of minty chocolate. It should be complimentary to get the awful peppery old meat taste out of your mouth. It was a penny pinching awful mess, next time I see it I would keep driving I would rather eat at a gas station. On a plus side the rolls delicious. Hopefully the homemade jam and apple butter doesn't need to be refrigerated because it's not. Definitely not worth the drive or the money. read more

The Beef House is a classic Indiana dining experience. We hadn't been in years, but my wife and I had a chance to stop by for dinner after dropping our daughter off at a nearby summer camp. The restaurant sits right off Exit 4 on the Indiana side of the Indiana/Illinois border on I-74. You can't miss it. Always great steaks and service. And you will never leave hungry thanks to their amazing (warm) yeast rolls. This isn't one of those high brow a la carte joints. Steaks are similarly priced from $25-50, but include soup, side and the salad bar. Definitely worth the price. And the steaks hold their own against the best! Note I dropped 1 star simply because the building is quite old and staff could do a bit better with some upgrades. Lots of wear and tear around the building. Food is an easy 5-star! read more

I came here on special occasions when I was growing up....birthdays, holidays, Mother's Day, etc. 30 years later and having not been here for 20 years, little has changed, so this place is very nostalgic for me. Whether you have been coming for 30 years and live in the area or are just passing thru and want a better meal option than just something that is a chain, stop by the Beefhouse. Family feel, very casual, a bit old school and good old fashion comfort foods. Healthiest options come from their salad bar, but know that it is not a vast salad bar. Absolutely have a dinner roll, it is a big part of the experience. Dollop on some apple butter or jelly for that extra bonus of deliciousness. Skipping on a roll is like going to NYC and never seeing the Statue of Liberty. On my visit, we were there for lunch and I had only the salad bar and rolls, so I cannot speak to the beef. My parents had the lunch specials, which seemed like cafeteria style a bit, but seemed popular amongst the busy lunch crowd. I remember the steaks though to be quite good. Took a drive from Brownsburg to Covington yesterday and had dinner at the Beef House for the first time. We were seated quickly. The dining room was very nice...maybe a little "dated" but we liked it. We also liked that there was no music playing so it was a quiet place to eat. Deb and I both ordered the rib-eye as that's apparently their signature steak. We added a portabello mushroom appetizer. The rolls were delivered quickly and they were DELICIOUS. Soon after we got our salads and soup. The salad was an average dinner salad and the vegetable soup was nothing special. The portabello mushrooms were the hightlight of the meal, and they were awesome! Our steaks arrived and we were both disappointed. They were very thin and overdone. We both said it seemed like a steak we would have gotten at the old Ponderosa Steakhouse. It was not terrible, but certainly nothing special. We had a small spill on our table and asked the server for some napkins. She gladly provided them but I was surprised she didn't offer to help us clean. We did request some extra rolls...but they never came out. She finally came to our table after we were finished and asked if we still wanted them, and we politely declined. It also took forever to get a refill on water. I realize it was only a $35 meal so I didn't expect a lot, but with such a reputation...we had hoped for a bit more. Now, I am not saying it was a bad meal! It was "ok". I just wouldn't drive an hour from Indy for it again. If you live close or just find yourself in the area, it's an ok place to eat. read more

This was a trip for my wife's Birthday. We had been going there for 20 years and have always been impressed. After driving over 100 miles to get here, we find the prices very high. Like most establishments trying to keep their quality the same as before we thought ok no big deal. Well these days it is not like it was. No salad bar, tiny cups of jam and apple butter, and the cook did not know how to cook a steak. My mid rare was blue, wife's med was mid rare. After sending ours back, mine was still rare, I was done and advised the waiter I was done and did not want to pay $40 for a steak when their cook was unable to cook a mid rare steak. After I was told by the waiter it looked ok to him I said no, I don't want it. He stated " I am done with you" and walked off. Then came back with a box, and said take it home to your dog. Never again. Bad service, poor quality of steak, can't cook it correctly and even the manager had no solution but to say I'm sorry. Manager was not going to take it off of the bill! My wife told her it was her birthday and then she said she would take it off. The story goes on but does not get better. read more

It's impossible to leave hungry. I love their pasta primavera. So tasty! I don't eat beef or pork, but their steaks and pork chops are really large. They have a pretty diverse menu. My 22 year old daughter stopped here to get dinner after a long day of traveling and to get a break from the road and weather. After ordering a basic soup, salad, and coke, she was asked to leave. Although her appearance wasn't stellar, I am appalled at the way she was treated. We have stopped here before to get meals taking her to and from college. Never again. In life, I can only imagine the cow that gave its life for my dinner was of a disappointed, beleaguered, and bitter variety. She had a four pack a day habit, survived multiple bad marriages with three kids - each as useless as their fathers. She ate buckets of fried chicken in between vodka gimlets, and screamed at the checkout girl at the local grocery more often than not. I have named her Gloria. In death, Gloria's baser impulses and poor decisions seemed to settle into her muscles, hardening them and lacing them with ropey strands of sinew. It was from these thick slabs of gristle that my steak was cut, charred, and plated for my dinner. We gnawed. We chewed. We chased mouthfuls of rubble with every liquid we could get our hands on. Our server, nervously apologetic and very attentive, was the bright spot even when faced with bringing the owner to our table who explained that Gloria was a prime species and that with 40 years in the industry he should know. He implied we were seeking for the meal to be comped (we weren't) and made it so awkward that the server (again, delightful) had to apologize on his behalf. My husband and I decided to go to this place for our anniversary. We made reservations, and drove an hour to get there. When it was time to seat us the man put us in the middle of the room where it was very noisy. It was very much like sitting in the middle of a gymnasium, bright lights and all. I asked if we could have a different table. It was busy and the man told us we'd have to wait and we said that's ok, we'll wait. It wasn't a problem for us. We walked across the room and he stopped and said that he didn't know how long we'd have to wait and I said "I understand", and then he stammered around and said that there were a lot of people and he couldn't guarantee that we'd get a table, and I said "I understand", (I knew eventually someone would be done with their meal and that they wouldn't all finish at the same time) and then he got angry and said in the most condescending way "As you can SEE it's very Busy and there are a lot of people here!" I asked him if he wanted us to go and he said "WE would PREFER it if you LEFT". We left. I called several days later and talked to one of the owners, Brad Wright, he said he was appalled and was sorry but there was nothing he could do about it. ? An owner with no authority I guess. Beware if you are expecting a nice experience. There is no ambiance like you'd expect for a steakhouse. It's like a feed and leave place. It's loud, and the little man with the attitude was awful. We have been going to The Beef House for years. Tonight was the worst dining experience ever. We had 6 adults and 2 children. 2 if the steaks were well done, they were ordered rare. The mashed potatoes were cold as was the gravy. We had to ask a different server fir drink refills, o ly God knows where are server was. Once the food was served, she disappeared again until she brought the check. We then tried to tell her about our issues,and all she said was..."I wish I would have known sooner".
