Country fried steak and mashed potatoes
    Justin P.

I'm in Danville for business quite often, and whenever I ask people where I should be eating in the area, they always mentioned Gilbert Street Cafe. I'm really starting to understand the "midwest diner", a large restaurant that always seems to be busy, friendly wait staff and a menu that has every classic American option under the sun. The food is typically done well, and that's why everyone recommends Gilbert Street Cafe. I've come here on three separate occasions thus far and my experiences have been quite consistent. My first visit I got their fried chicken tenders, with their vegetable of the day and a side of hash browns. The breading on the tenders were pretty good, but the chicken itself was missing some seasoning. The vegetable of the day (which seems to always be the vegetable of the day whenever I visit) was mixed veggies. It probably was the stuff you buy frozen in the bag, that was just okay as well. The hash browns were fantastic though, I would highly recommend getting breakfast items, they seem to do those extremely well! My next visit I order the chopped steak and I was very impressed. This one had a lot of good flavor, wasn't too dry and, did I mention that the portions here are super big? That's the midwest diner for ya! On my most recent visit I got the country fried steak with mashed potatoes. This steak was also huge, maybe even larger than the size of my face. It came with this delicious white gravy that reminded me of the gravy put on biscuits and gravy here in the south. It was full of pepper, just the way I liked it. The potatoes on the other hand were a bit disappointing, it was almost like it was powdered mash. Not even the gravy could save it from the texture and flavor. If you're looking for a place to take the family, look no further than Gilbert Street Cafe. It is a community staple, and if you've been around long enough, you'll be sure to find someone you know there. It truly is part of the beating heart of Danville.

I had the Chicken Fajita Skillet with my eggs over easy. Absolutely LOVE that they have breakfast all day, or at least extended hours! The hubs and my friend were ready for lunch, but I almost always love breakfast more. Flavoring was good and the serving size was great. Took almost half of it home for another meal. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was diner-like. Prices were reasonable and we all left feeling pretty happy.

Soooo good. The vibes are nice. The staff are great, the foods delicious, the prices are fair, and the portions are big. I recommend the cherry cheesecake, broccoli soup, and so much more.

Our service was amazing and so was the food. Such a cute breakfast spot in Danville! We will definitely be back next time we are in town.

Awesome breakfast. We each had a skillet and love their homemade hot sauce. Bought a bottle to bring home.

No vegan options. Not 1. Would love for them to have 1 meal that is vegan friendly. It wouldn't be that hard.

Always good food but it's noisy in there. Also the entry door is really hard to open. The service is always good.

Our waitress came to take our drink order right away and we all decided to get the breakfast buffet. That was a great choice. Several options on the buffet. I liked that you could get hashbrowns and scrambled eggs plain or with peppers and fixings mixed in. They had a good jalapeno egg option too. Pancakes, waffles or french toast. Grits. Tortilla soup. Bacon, sausage links or ham for meats plus sausage gravy and biscuits. Tried a bit of everything except the soup and enjoyed it all. I did find the need for some salt and pepper on the potatoes and eggs but that's typical of a buffet. The only thing I would have liked to have seen added to the buffet was some cheese. It would have been nice to have for the eggs and/or the grits. Another add would be some berries for the pancakes and waffles or even some small packs of peanut butter. They kept the buffet stocked and made sure it was tidy. I love that they have a fresh squeezed orange juice station if you want some fresh ok it's available. The waitress checked back on us regularly for coffee and water. They didn't even seem to mind that we lingered for a while after we were done eating just visiting and catching up. Seems to be a family friendly meet up spot where you can eat and hang out for a bit. Definitely worth a visit. You'll be able to get full and the food is tasty.
