I met my Aunt and Uncle for dinner at The Beef House in Covington, IN per their suggestion one Saturday afternoon and I was very impressed with the dining experience. This was a bit of a drive for me, an hour and a half, since I live in Indy, but it was well worth the drive! The Beef House is a steakhouse that has been around since 1964, and it is a family style steakhouse that is known for their fresh beef and huge portions. They also have a banquet hall across the parking lot that can be rented out for special events or organization meetings. I have not been inside the banquet hall, but from the pictures, it looks very nice and has a beautiful ambiance. When I went inside the restaurant, I noticed a bull's head on the wall on the right that was very unique and stood out very well. It is definitely a photo opportunity for families to remember the dining experience. The ambiance of the restaurant is gorgeous and definitely old style family steakhouse vibes with wood paneling and display of fine chinaware on the mantle. Our server greeted us with a smile and welcomed us to the restaurant. Unfortunately, I do not remember her name, but she was wonderful and took very good care of us. The menu is very impressive with a variety of options from pasta, steak, lobster, fish, and even frog legs! I decided to go with the Atlantic salmon dinner because I was in the mood for fish. I know I should have gotten a steak, but just was not feeling a steak for dinner. The dinner came with a salad, a side, and soup. I chose the vegetable soup, garden salad, and baked potato with sour cream for my side. OMG! When I say the portions were huge, the portions were huge!!! My Atlantic salmon was a huge portion, and the baked potato was a decent size as well. The vegetable soup and garden salad were delicious and very fresh. The vegetable soup was homemade and very comfort food for me. The Atlantic salmon was cooked to perfection and had a perfect texture to it. It melted in my mouth when I tasted it and was absolutely perfect! The baked potato was excellent and cooked perfectly as well. My Aunt also had the Atlantic salmon dinner and my Uncle had the chicken Parmesan dinner with pasta. The chicken Parmesan was huge and big enough to fill the entire plate. My Uncle loved it very much. The best part was the yeast rolls with strawberry jam and apple butter. The yeast rolls were the best I have ever had in a long time and the homemade strawberry jam and apple butter were pure heaven. You can even purchase a dozen of the yeast rolls to take home, along with a jar of apple butter or strawberry jam, if you are so inclined. This was an amazing dining experience and reminded me of the old steakhouse my family used to go to as a kid for dinner on special occasions. My Aunt and Uncle gave a good recommendation, and will definitely be back here for dinner if I am in the area. The Beef House is fantastic and highly recommend anyone traveling on the road to stop here for lunch or dinner, but would suggest making reservations in advance because it does get busy very quick. A wonderful road side restaurant for dinner here in Indiana that is a great discovery. Everyone need to come to The Beef House! It is #1!

An Indiana institution! I enjoy stopping here for grab and go burgers or a sit down meal. Traditional menu options abound, with reliable service and old school ambiance. The yeast rolls are excellent as are the hamburger buns. Lots of protein and carb options for your appetite. They also have famously good apple butter and other jams for the rolls. The venerable salad bar has been replaced with ready-made items, a post-Covid adaptation. Get the hamburger and fries to go, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles. You won't be disappointed!

My first time here and it didn't disappoint. The service was excellent and the food was above average. I started with the bang bang shrimp appetizer. The sauce in the shrimp was much better than a well know chain that serves the same dish. The broccoli soup was creamy and the broccoli was not overcooked. The rolls were on another level: hot, pillowy and fresh. You could literally eat just the rolls with butter and leave. For the entrée I ordered the seafood platter (I know it's a beef place) but I'm not a big steak person. The seafood platter was huge. Everything was fresh and not overly salty. I can't wait to return and try some of their other menu items.

A restaurant and dinner theater located outside Covington, Indiana. A nice place with scenic views and good food. Famous for their dinner rolls. As much of their food as possible is made from scratch and from locally sourced ingredients. Our server Annie did a good job of making sure we had anything we needed and checked on us often in spite of also having a large group in her section to handle.

This place is really good for what it is. It's not five star dining but it has five star service. Everyone one working there is extremely helpful and friendly. It located just I74 and we stop there every time we travel through this area. They always start you with great rolls served with apple butter and a strawberry jelly. They are always warm and delicious. Though they have an extensive menu we always go with the cafeteria style meal that changes daily. We have never been disappointed in anything we have had. This will continue to be a stopping point for us anytime we are passing through Covington IN.

Food was really good, however the steak was under done twice, but still tasty. Server was excellent.

My family has been going there for years. It seems recently, the steak just isn't what it used to be.

The restaurant was nearly empty on a Monday evening. I was dining by myself, and when I entered the hostess asked if I had a reservation. I was surprised, because the restaurant was nearly empty. I said I didn't have a reservation and asked if I needed one. She told me no, but added that since I was dining alone maybe I could sit at the bar. I wasn't planning to drink since I was traveling for work, but when she suggested for a second time that I might like to sit at the bar "since I was dining alone " I said that would be ok. I travel frequently for work and often dine in restaurants by myself, and I've never had anyone think it unusual. The bar area was completely empty, not a single customer at the bar or any of the tables in the bar area. A very slow night. I ordered salmon and a baked potato, both were excellent. I love Saltgrass salmon, and it is usually what I have ordered at all the Saltgrass locations I have visited. The potato was perfectly baked and served with butter, sour cream, and green onion, just as I had ordered. I'll be happy to visit this location again when driving through this area. There really aren't many good dinner options along my route so I am glad Saltgrass is here.

Not only that, but the food was stellar. Here's what we tried: -Foie Gras Special: 9/10 - I just love foie gras and wow this one was cooked to perfection and the accompaniment of the cream cheese foam and the apple was amazing! I could eat it all to myself. -Denver American Wagyu 8oz: 8/10 - I did really like it, though I may have gone with Spiralis cut next time, as this was small and not as flavorful as I would've dreamed of. Decadent, of course. -Mac and Cheese: 10/10 - A perfect Mac and cheese. I don't think I could've dreamt of a better one. The flavor was outstanding, the pasta was al dente, and the cheese was just soooo gooey. It was addictive. -Truffle Butter Mashed Potatoes: 7/10 - While these were good, they had no truffle butter taste to them at all. In fact, we wondered if it had been mistakenly marked as truffle butter, but apparently it was correct. -Korean Corn: 8/10 - Cheesy, gochujang-ey, yummy. It's kind of like a Korean elote, so I'm not mad at all. -Gooey Butter Cake: 9/10 - I really don't know how to describe this other than sweet and yummy. It was also soft inside, which paired well with the crispier crust. -Chocolate Decadence: 10/10 - This just melted in my mouth. It was gooey and delicious and dark and rich and WOW. Left standing on the sidewalk, we called J. Fords Black Angus where their host greeted the situation and circumstance with grace and determination. Come on down, she noted, we will take care of you! What we got was exactly what the evening deserved. Hostess Hope greeted us warmly and got our party of eight seated without missing a beat, even though we showed up unannounced and a little frazzled. Our server, Brian, was fantastic from the first minute -- attentive, funny, genuinely engaged with our group, and clearly happy to be part of the celebration once he found out what the night was about. He made a point of wishing my parents a happy anniversary himself, and the whole team's warmth turned what could have been a sour night into one of the best memories of our trip. The food was excellent across the board -- exactly what you want from a Black Angus steakhouse. But honestly, it was the people who made the night. After being treated like an inconvenience an hour earlier, walking into J. Fords and being treated like honored guests meant more than they probably realized. If you're in Terre Haute and want a restaurant that actually understands hospitality -- not just food on a plate, but the kind of service that makes a celebration feel like a celebration -- go to J.
