Took a drive from Brownsburg to Covington yesterday and had dinner at the Beef House for the first time. We were seated quickly. The dining room was very nice...maybe a little "dated" but we liked it. We also liked that there was no music playing so it was a quiet place to eat. Deb and I both ordered the rib-eye as that's apparently their signature steak. We added a portabello mushroom appetizer. The rolls were delivered quickly and they were DELICIOUS. Soon after we got our salads and soup. The salad was an average dinner salad and the vegetable soup was nothing special. The portabello mushrooms were the hightlight of the meal, and they were awesome! Our steaks arrived and we were both disappointed. They were very thin and overdone. We both said it seemed like a steak we would have gotten at the old Ponderosa Steakhouse. It was not terrible, but certainly nothing special. We had a small spill on our table and asked the server for some napkins. She gladly provided them but I was surprised she didn't offer to help us clean. We did request some extra rolls...but they never came out. She finally came to our table after we were finished and asked if we still wanted them, and we politely declined. It also took forever to get a refill on water. I realize it was only a $35 meal so I didn't expect a lot, but with such a reputation...we had hoped for a bit more. Now, I am not saying it was a bad meal! It was "ok". I just wouldn't drive an hour from Indy for it again. If you live close or just find yourself in the area, it's an ok place to eat. read more

Okay - this was a flash to the past!. This place was awesome, however, the decor reminded me of somewhere in the hills & mountains of somewhere else. Friendly atmosphere. Felt like a local place - learned later that friends in Greenwood regularly go there for a special dinner - which I could understand. The food was excellent, plentiful and the service was amazing. This was a trip for my wife's Birthday. We had been going there for 20 years and have always been impressed. After driving over 100 miles to get here, we find the prices very high. Like most establishments trying to keep their quality the same as before we thought ok no big deal. Well these days it is not like it was. No salad bar, tiny cups of jam and apple butter, and the cook did not know how to cook a steak. My mid rare was blue, wife's med was mid rare. After sending ours back, mine was still rare, I was done and advised the waiter I was done and did not want to pay $40 for a steak when their cook was unable to cook a mid rare steak. After I was told by the waiter it looked ok to him I said no, I don't want it. He stated " I am done with you" and walked off. Then came back with a box, and said take it home to your dog. Never again. Bad service, poor quality of steak, can't cook it correctly and even the manager had no solution but to say I'm sorry. Manager was not going to take it off of the bill! My wife told her it was her birthday and then she said she would take it off. The story goes on but does not get better. read more

I'm a Beef House fan! I had been here before, many years ago. I remembered enjoying it back then. We were in the area due to a funeral, so we came here to enjoy a meal afterwards. I ordered the special of the day which was the seafood alfredo. While waiting for our food, we were served our delicious rolls, apple butter, and strawberry jam. Mmmmmmm. Love me some of their rolls! My husband's meal was brought to the table, and I was informed that our server had made the mistake of ordering chicken alfredo for me instead of the seafood alfredo. She was very apologetic and informed me that my meal would be out shortly. I did have to watch my husband eat and pretty much finish his entire meal, so that was kind of a bummer. When my food arrived, it was amazing! It had sooooo much delicious seafood. It more than made up for the wait. Our server made things right by only charging us the price of the chicken alfredo instead of the seafood alfredo. She was sweet and kept our drinks full also. We would gladly return here. read more

I had an amazing ribeye at Texas Roadhouse a few days before so I was more than excited about getting another great steak at the Beef House. Long Story short, that never happened. an 8 oz ribeye at the beef house was over $20. That was slightly ridiculous to me when the 18 oz ribeye at TR was $22. So I skipped that and went for a cheeseburger. I ordered it medium with onion rings. The yeast rolls served were hot and fresh and were the only things I ate there that night that had flavor. Everything else had zero seasoning and zero flavor as a result. A sample of my friends broccoli cheddar soup was hot and nothing else, my burger was well done and had zero seasoning. Evening the onion rings were tasteless. The service was ok but when the food tastes this bad and costs this much, there is no excuse for going. Great steaks. This out of the way restaurant was a great place to try out. The restaurant is spacious and has a very homely feel to it. The service was great and there are lots of options on the menu. We tried the pork tenderloin and Jack Daniels NY strip which we enjoyed. Because it was the set lunch menu we also got soup (broccoli and cheese - didn't particularly enjoy this one as it was very heavy and thick; black bean soup - again not that great). We have been going to The Beef House for years. Tonight was the worst dining experience ever. We had 6 adults and 2 children. 2 if the steaks were well done, they were ordered rare. The mashed potatoes were cold as was the gravy. We had to ask a different server fir drink refills, o ly God knows where are server was. Once the food was served, she disappeared again until she brought the check. We then tried to tell her about our issues,and all she said was..."I wish I would have known sooner". Been going to the Beef House for quite a few years, always a family gathering from the bi-state area. It's a great location for us to have this kind of activity, but on our last few visits, some of the people in our group have complained about the food. Last visit was 12/9/2023, and two people had very improperly cooked steaks, one had subpar fish, and I had a grilled tenderloin that could have subbed for a roof patch. Couple this with things like very mediocre salad and fries, and the Beef House needs to consider the quality of what they're serving, as always, the service and ambiance were fine. read more

I haven't ate here in 20 years and was looking forward to a nice steak. I was promptly seated but noticed the salad bar was closed. I ordered the 16 oz. Ribeye Medium Rare with onion rings, side salad with ranch, and a cup of chicken noodle soup. The rolls were still delicious as I remembered. The salad was small and nothing more than average. The chicken noodle soup was good. My steak arrived and it looked smaller than a 16 oz. and I noticed there wasn't any juice on the steak or the plate. The steak was bland and had a strip of muscle on one side that made eating/cutting difficult. I should have asked for another steak but I was on a bit of a time crunch so I didn't complain. The onion rings were very good. My meal with tip was $ 55.00. I have had much better steaks at the Texas Roadhouse for half the price. I ate here the late afternoon of 6/30/21. read more

I was looking forward to chicken livers at a fun, popular restaurant. I was underwhelmed at the quality of the food and overwhelmed at the price of the food for the amount. Regrettably, I will not return and will not recommend this restaurant to family who live within 30 miles of the restaurant. Sorry! Wish it had been a better experience! read more

All 6 entree's were mouth watering and belly filling! I have Celiac Disease and had the salad with oil and vinegar dressing, the NY Strip w/loaded baked potato and glass of wine with no issues of gluten at all! I'm very sensitive and all was GREAT!! read more

I had the ribeye rare with baked potato. Added fried shrimp. Came with salad bar, broccoli soup and rolls. My husband had ribeye medium rare with baked potato, salad bar and beef vegetable soup. Steaks were okay. Not much flavor to them and not seasoned at all. Surprised with being cooked on fire grill. Potatoes are covered under so much toppings that you can't even tell what the potatoes taste like. Broccoli soup was good, my husband said his soup was good but a lot of pepper. Rolls are good with the strawberry preserve and apple butter. This was our second time there. Got dinner and a show, not in a good way. One waitress making racial comments to a cook in the kitchen while we were at the salad bar. Very inappropriate. Not sure if they were kidding or not but made things very uncomfortable. Our table was next to where the wait staff got drinks from for customers. Staff hiding around the corner to look at their phones. We have been here several times over the last few years and it's always been consistent good. If you order a meal in comes with a beverage (non-alcoholic), cup of soup & salad bar. They also bring a basket of the most amazing rolls to the table along with apple butter and strawberry jam. I could make a meal of just the salad bar and rolls. :) The salad bar starts off with a ice cold plate, offers a wide variety of options, dressing and toppings. An all time classic that unfortunately seems to be kinda mailing it in now post pandemic. Serving salads with premade to-go containers of dressing is a really jenky operation for a destination sit down steak house. And the usual troop of teenage servers seems more apathetic than ever. Lastly.. good god with the 8000k white LED lights in the dining room. Steak houses need warm, dim light, not trying to eat a nice bone in rib eye in what feels like a Walgreens. Sucked in from the billboards! Certainly glad I tried it but probably won't be coming back. Ordered a ribeye but I got a cheap sirloin instead. Very chewy and tough... Be certain to have a strong jaw. Despite that, the rolls were very good, and the staff were SO friendly and our server was great. Such a letdown. It's not worth the drive or the energy to ask for a quality prepared steak. It won't happen.

The food was very good and the steak was done perfectly! They were kind and even gave us a free ear of corn!

Most recent visit was a disaster. No one greeted or seated my party of 3. The servers were too busy busing the tables to bother and stop to wait on us. We were served soup and chili with no crackers, butter without a knife to spread it, and no jelly for the rolls. Can't wait to see what happens wrong next. My father-in-law got my wife and I a gift card to The Beef House for her birthday back in May... and we just now got around to using it tonight. In summary, I'll say this -- it wasn't that terrible, but I'm glad we weren't the ones who paid for this meal. Suffice to say, the experience was pretty average. And for an $80+ bill, I'd really expect more than that from an "award winning" steakhouse. (FYI -- a display case in the entryway revealed the award.... "Best Steak House in Indiana" -- Midwest Living Magazine; 1988) The lowdown: After driving about an hour to get there, we were seated in what I think was the overflow section. We saw the main dining area when we came in and it was pretty full. No surprise, really, for ten 'til 7 on a Saturday night. (It's a surprise I saw that at all with the deli-style case of meat on display as you walk in.) So we were seated and our server came over almost immediately with water and asked for a drink order. So far so good. We took a minute to peruse the extensive wine list (a plus) and my wife selected an Indiana Riesling ... which took 10+ minutes to show up. 'Okay, they're busy -- no problem' I thought. Our poor server mentioned this several times throughout the evening as... 1. I had to ask for every refill (except my last) 2. He forgot to bring our soup (until the meal was over) 3. He forgot to charge us for anything but our food (which we corrected for him) That aside, I felt bad for the kid. Obviously overwhelmed. But I digress -- back to the restaurant. The room we were in featured a large number of lengthy tables surrounded by hungry carnivores... maybe 200 people. The whole place had a sort of "lodge-like" feel, but with a bit of rustic, midwestern charm here and there. Not bad. So, despite the fact that our meals came with rolls (quite good), soup (never came) and a salad bar (pretty good... the dressings were very good) -- I elected to try the shrimp cocktail to start. As was the theme of the evening... average. The shrimp was decently sized and the presentation was pretty nice, but the cocktail sauce left a lot to be desired, the shrimp was a little chewy ... and it didn't come with any lemon (pretty standard, IMO). I wouldn't order it again. For the main course I went with the standard Filet (bacon wrapped... you've already got my attention) and my wife ordered the petite version (more bacon for me). What was more hilarious is that each meal came with something from the "vegetable" section. What was on the vegetable section you ask? All sorts of American "vegetables" like french fries, baked potatoes, onion rings, broccoli w/ cheese sauce, rice, mushrooms sauteed in butter and mashed potatoes with gravy. EPIC list of veggies there. lol So the steaks finally came out and while adequately sized and a nice cut, mine was just a little past medium rare and my wife's was well past the medium she ordered. Whatever... we went with it. More disappointing than the meat being overcooked however was its general lack of flavor. I'm not joking at all when I say that my wife looked at me and said that she enjoyed the flavor of sirloin kabobs she'd had at Texas Roadhouse the night before better. And I could only agree. Without the bacon, I'm pretty sure I would've had to resort to dousing my steak in whatever kind of "Bob's all-purpose sauce" they had on the table to get any flavor out of it. Sorry to say it, but I honestly feel like this place needs to be re-evaluated as "Indiana's Best Steak House." 1988 was a LONG time ago and we've had far better experiences elsewhere. My husband and I decided to go to this place for our anniversary. We made reservations, and drove an hour to get there. When it was time to seat us the man put us in the middle of the room where it was very noisy. It was very much like sitting in the middle of a gymnasium, bright lights and all. I asked if we could have a different table. It was busy and the man told us we'd have to wait and we said that's ok, we'll wait. It wasn't a problem for us. We walked across the room and he stopped and said that he didn't know how long we'd have to wait and I said "I understand", and then he stammered around and said that there were a lot of people and he couldn't guarantee that we'd get a table, and I said "I understand", (I knew eventually someone would be done with their meal and that they wouldn't all finish at the same time) and then he got angry and said in the most condescending way "As you can SEE it's very Busy and there are a lot of people here!" I asked him if he wanted us to go and he said "WE would PREFER it if you LEFT". We left. I called several days later and talked to one of the owners, Brad Wright, he said he was appalled and was sorry but there was nothing he could do about it. ? An owner with no authority I guess. Beware if you are expecting a nice experience. There is no ambiance like you'd expect for a steakhouse. It's like a feed and leave place. It's loud, and the little man with the attitude was awful. For me, zen takes the form of sitting behind a beautiful prepared steak dinner; I try to build-up a bank of cravings before I unleash my red-meat hunger at a steakhouse of my choosing. But if I had my way, I'd head west to the Beef House in Covington. Every time. What I like about the Beef House is that it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. You won't find fashionable dinner jackets or a maître d' with a funny accent. No no, they fully embrace that down-home Indiana tradition of culinary hospitality. It's not pretentious and there's no dress code, but that also doesn't grant you free reign to wear your favorite pro football jersey, either. Don't be a meatball, this is a steakhouse, people. The steaks are of excellent cut and proportion and are very well prepared for whatever your taste is. The price is what you would expect from a local, home-grown steakhouse - with drinks, be prepared for a decent sized bill. Since it's a rare treat, I don't get to bent out of shape when putting my money where my mouth is. Literally. My favorite menu option is the Jack Daniels New York Strip, medium-rare; an excellent serving of steak, marinated in a smokey-oakey-whiskey flavor that compliments the steak so well. Pair that with helping of steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes, and you sir/ma'am, have a great meal ahead of you. Also noteworthy: the dinner rolls are exceptional with accompanied apple butter and/or berry preserves. They are delicious, so fight the good fight and resist the temptations to gorge yourself. You don't want to ruin your dinner, do you? What makes this place special is with any steak dinner option on the menu, you also receive that 'Back Home in Indiana' warm and fuzzy feeling, complimentary. Yeah sure, there are fancier, more pretentious places to go for an overpriced cut of beef, but I feel at ease when I'm at the Beef House. I like that. read more

Really sad about our experience here! The salad bar is closed, which is understandable with covid, but they really don't have any replacement options besides a very small basic side salad. It's obvious they're salad bar was the biggest draw! We also ordered the jack daniels ny strip and baked potato. We stopped here on the way from Indianapolis to Springfield, IL for the weekend, on a Friday night at about peak dinner time (7pm). We'd been here 20 years before for a large group function, but had never eaten in the dining room itself. Overall, everything was great. We were seated immediately and were asked our choice of a table in the middle of the room or along the wall (we opted for along the wall), and our server was at our table in just a couple minutes and was great about checking back regularly. I had a glass of white zin and my husband tried something from their fairly large selection of bottled beers. Our dinners (he had a large ribeye and I had the king crab/small filet combo) also came with soup, salad bar, and one side. The salad bar is good -- Several prepared salads (potato, slaw, macaroni, etc.), some fresh veggies like carrots, mushrooms, cucumber slices, beets, mixed lettuce (nicely cut into bite-sized pieces, a big plus for me), wonderful garlic croutons, a couple cheeses and crunchy toppings, and many fresh dressing choices. We had three options for soup -- Beef vegetable, broccoli cheese, and corn chowder. We both opted for corn chowder, and it was delicious. We ordered our steaks medium rare, and they were just right. My only complaint, and the only reason they didn't get five stars, was that the steaks were a little bland. Just a little bit of salt fixed mine, and my husband used their self-branded steak sauce to zip his up. My king crab legs were pretty good -- only choice cuts (no claws or forearms), in the form of two large legs. And, harkening back to a time gone by, the drawn butter was nicely served in a candle-heated warmer. I've only seen that one other time in recent years, and really miss that! We skipped dessert because we were more than full with the ample portions. We've already talked about taking our kids (both college students) back there with us sometime when they're home from school. Would I recommend the restaurant? Definitely. Would I make a trip from Indianapolis just to eat there? Maybe, if I wanted a change of pace, but not because it offers something I can't get at home. read more

Well, I got sucked into the place via the interstate billboards. Truly a case of don't believe everything you read. The place is somewhat confusing- first off, it dark in there but I wasn't sure if it was a S and S Cafeteria set up our an order from the menu or both. The lunch special is $13 and includes a drink and trip to the ho hum salad bar. I order the roast beef- you go and get your entree yourself and two sides. I quickly changed my mind when I asked the meat director for rare slices. He said they don't serve it that way...they always cook it medium well. Yeah, I am not interested in a pile of dry, grey meat. So, just like my brother who always ordered a hamburger when we went out as kids to the seafood restaurants, I ate a decent piece of grilled chicken. Not what I wanted, really. The server was fabulous and apologized for the roast beef temp... my tea glass was always filled, the rolls were wonderful, and the butter and strawberry jam spot on.
