Been going to the Beef House for quite a few years, always a family gathering from the bi-state area. It's a great location for us to have this kind of activity, but on our last few visits, some of the people in our group have complained about the food. Last visit was 12/9/2023, and two people had very improperly cooked steaks, one had subpar fish, and I had a grilled tenderloin that could have subbed for a roof patch. Couple this with things like very mediocre salad and fries, and the Beef House needs to consider the quality of what they're serving, as always, the service and ambiance were fine. read more

I'm a Beef House fan! I had been here before, many years ago. I remembered enjoying it back then. We were in the area due to a funeral, so we came here to enjoy a meal afterwards. I ordered the special of the day which was the seafood alfredo. While waiting for our food, we were served our delicious rolls, apple butter, and strawberry jam. Mmmmmmm. Love me some of their rolls! My husband's meal was brought to the table, and I was informed that our server had made the mistake of ordering chicken alfredo for me instead of the seafood alfredo. She was very apologetic and informed me that my meal would be out shortly. I did have to watch my husband eat and pretty much finish his entire meal, so that was kind of a bummer. When my food arrived, it was amazing! It had sooooo much delicious seafood. It more than made up for the wait. Our server made things right by only charging us the price of the chicken alfredo instead of the seafood alfredo. She was sweet and kept our drinks full also. We would gladly return here. read more

I was looking forward to chicken livers at a fun, popular restaurant. I was underwhelmed at the quality of the food and overwhelmed at the price of the food for the amount. I had an amazing ribeye at Texas Roadhouse a few days before so I was more than excited about getting another great steak at the Beef House. Long Story short, that never happened. an 8 oz ribeye at the beef house was over $20. That was slightly ridiculous to me when the 18 oz ribeye at TR was $22. So I skipped that and went for a cheeseburger. I ordered it medium with onion rings. The yeast rolls served were hot and fresh and were the only things I ate there that night that had flavor. Everything else had zero seasoning and zero flavor as a result. A sample of my friends broccoli cheddar soup was hot and nothing else, my burger was well done and had zero seasoning. Evening the onion rings were tasteless. The service was ok but when the food tastes this bad and costs this much, there is no excuse for going. Great steaks. This out of the way restaurant was a great place to try out. The restaurant is spacious and has a very homely feel to it. The service was great and there are lots of options on the menu. We tried the pork tenderloin and Jack Daniels NY strip which we enjoyed. Because it was the set lunch menu we also got soup (broccoli and cheese - didn't particularly enjoy this one as it was very heavy and thick; black bean soup - again not that great). An all time classic that unfortunately seems to be kinda mailing it in now post pandemic. Serving salads with premade to-go containers of dressing is a really jenky operation for a destination sit down steak house. And the usual troop of teenage servers seems more apathetic than ever. I haven't ate here in 20 years and was looking forward to a nice steak. I was promptly seated but noticed the salad bar was closed. I ordered the 16 oz. Ribeye Medium Rare with onion rings, side salad with ranch, and a cup of chicken noodle soup. The rolls were still delicious as I remembered. The salad was small and nothing more than average. The chicken noodle soup was good. My steak arrived and it looked smaller than a 16 oz. and I noticed there wasn't any juice on the steak or the plate. The steak was bland and had a strip of muscle on one side that made eating/cutting difficult. I should have asked for another steak but I was on a bit of a time crunch so I didn't complain. The onion rings were very good. My meal with tip was $ 55.00. I have had much better steaks at the Texas Roadhouse for half the price. I ate here the late afternoon of 6/30/21. read more

My wife and I drove out for an early dinner today. We haven't been here in awhile and we've always had a great experience. Our steaks were great and as always the rolls were to die for. I had the ribeye rare with baked potato. Added fried shrimp. Came with salad bar, broccoli soup and rolls. My husband had ribeye medium rare with baked potato, salad bar and beef vegetable soup. Steaks were okay. Not much flavor to them and not seasoned at all. Surprised with being cooked on fire grill. Potatoes are covered under so much toppings that you can't even tell what the potatoes taste like. Broccoli soup was good, my husband said his soup was good but a lot of pepper. Rolls are good with the strawberry preserve and apple butter. This was our second time there. Got dinner and a show, not in a good way. One waitress making racial comments to a cook in the kitchen while we were at the salad bar. Very inappropriate. Not sure if they were kidding or not but made things very uncomfortable. We have been here several times over the last few years and it's always been consistent good. If you order a meal in comes with a beverage (non-alcoholic), cup of soup & salad bar. They also bring a basket of the most amazing rolls to the table along with apple butter and strawberry jam. I could make a meal of just the salad bar and rolls. :) The salad bar starts off with a ice cold plate, offers a wide variety of options, dressing and toppings. Most recent visit was a disaster. No one greeted or seated my party of 3. The servers were too busy busing the tables to bother and stop to wait on us. Well, I got sucked into the place via the interstate billboards. Truly a case of don't believe everything you read. The place is somewhat confusing- first off, it dark in there but I wasn't sure if it was a S and S Cafeteria set up our an order from the menu or both. The lunch special is $13 and includes a drink and trip to the ho hum salad bar. I order the roast beef- you go and get your entree yourself and two sides. I quickly changed my mind when I asked the meat director for rare slices. He said they don't serve it that way...they always cook it medium well. Yeah, I am not interested in a pile of dry, grey meat. So, just like my brother who always ordered a hamburger when we went out as kids to the seafood restaurants, I ate a decent piece of grilled chicken. Not what I wanted, really. My father-in-law got my wife and I a gift card to The Beef House for her birthday back in May... and we just now got around to using it tonight. In summary, I'll say this -- it wasn't that terrible, but I'm glad we weren't the ones who paid for this meal. Suffice to say, the experience was pretty average. And for an $80+ bill, I'd really expect more than that from an "award winning" steakhouse. (FYI -- a display case in the entryway revealed the award.... "Best Steak House in Indiana" -- Midwest Living Magazine; 1988) The lowdown: After driving about an hour to get there, we were seated in what I think was the overflow section. We saw the main dining area when we came in and it was pretty full. No surprise, really, for ten 'til 7 on a Saturday night. (It's a surprise I saw that at all with the deli-style case of meat on display as you walk in.) So we were seated and our server came over almost immediately with water and asked for a drink order. So far so good. We took a minute to peruse the extensive wine list (a plus) and my wife selected an Indiana Riesling ... which took 10+ minutes to show up. 'Okay, they're busy -- no problem' I thought. Our poor server mentioned this several times throughout the evening as... 1. I had to ask for every refill (except my last) 2. He forgot to bring our soup (until the meal was over) 3. He forgot to charge us for anything but our food (which we corrected for him) That aside, I felt bad for the kid. Obviously overwhelmed. But I digress -- back to the restaurant. The room we were in featured a large number of lengthy tables surrounded by hungry carnivores... maybe 200 people. The whole place had a sort of "lodge-like" feel, but with a bit of rustic, midwestern charm here and there. Not bad. So, despite the fact that our meals came with rolls (quite good), soup (never came) and a salad bar (pretty good... the dressings were very good) -- I elected to try the shrimp cocktail to start. As was the theme of the evening... average. The shrimp was decently sized and the presentation was pretty nice, but the cocktail sauce left a lot to be desired, the shrimp was a little chewy ... and it didn't come with any lemon (pretty standard, IMO). I wouldn't order it again. For the main course I went with the standard Filet (bacon wrapped... you've already got my attention) and my wife ordered the petite version (more bacon for me). What was more hilarious is that each meal came with something from the "vegetable" section. What was on the vegetable section you ask? All sorts of American "vegetables" like french fries, baked potatoes, onion rings, broccoli w/ cheese sauce, rice, mushrooms sauteed in butter and mashed potatoes with gravy. EPIC list of veggies there. lol So the steaks finally came out and while adequately sized and a nice cut, mine was just a little past medium rare and my wife's was well past the medium she ordered. Whatever... we went with it. More disappointing than the meat being overcooked however was its general lack of flavor. I'm not joking at all when I say that my wife looked at me and said that she enjoyed the flavor of sirloin kabobs she'd had at Texas Roadhouse the night before better. And I could only agree. Without the bacon, I'm pretty sure I would've had to resort to dousing my steak in whatever kind of "Bob's all-purpose sauce" they had on the table to get any flavor out of it. Sorry to say it, but I honestly feel like this place needs to be re-evaluated as "Indiana's Best Steak House." 1988 was a LONG time ago and we've had far better experiences elsewhere. Me and my family are regulars at the Beef House. We love eating here, and normally have no issues with our experience. However, I'll never go back if "Kellie" is our server. The closest she should be to a customer is Siberia! She had a terrible attitude the whole evening, and even with our family being polite each time we asked for something, we felt like we were more of an inconvenience to her. Customer service is a foreign word to her, and it'll be a while before we ever go back. She ruined our evening and I'm sure many others have complained about her. It's a real shame. Great steakhouse in Covington just of the interstate. Nice big parking lot with plenty of parking. They do take reservations. Pick your own steak if you want. All you can eat salad bar, soup, should be world famous rolls, and drink is included with the price of your steak. Steak was cooked to perfection with with little to no seasoning. I took a little road trip today to the Western Part of Indiana. My boss told me about this place and how fantastic the food was. And since I was not too far away, I decided to head over here for lunch. It is just off of I-74, and I am guessing we were a stones throw away from the Illinois State Line, because there were more Illinois plates in the parking lot than Indiana plates. It's also right across the street from a truck stop, so if you're a trucker on this route and looking for a good meal, it's definitely worth a walk across the street. Now I was kind of confused when I pulled in the parking lot. The first building you see on the left is actually a banquet hall. It was completely dark and I was worried they were closed. However, the actual restaurant sits toward the back of the parking lot. The restaurant was opened in 1964 and it definitely looked like a blast from the past. It's a pretty good sized restaurant. The marquee & this site says they open at 10:30am, however, they've actually changed their opening time to 11am. But they went ahead and seated me and took my order. The staff was very kind. Now, they have a lunch line, which is kind of a cafeteria style service, with different meats, veggies, salads, soups, etc. However, I wanted a steak. So in addition to the lunch line, they had three menus I could choose from. One was the lunch menu, one was the early bird dinner menu and the other was their main dinner menu. I ordered off of it. I got a small Filet Mignon, with a baked potato. It also comes with both a cup of soup & a salad. The soup choices today were broccoli cheddar soup or corn chowder. I had the corn chowder & it was quite tasty. The salad was a perfect size. Some places can bring you too much and you're half full before the main course. The only complaint on the salad is the bowls are nice looking, but the salad kept falling on to the table when I'd take a bite. Maybe use some small plates instead. It tasted good though. The steak tasted excellent. It was slightly under cooked, being medium rare instead of medium, but that's not a big deal for me. I usually don't order baked potatoes at lunch, because they tend not to be cooked as well. But this one was! The highlight of the meal though is their epic dinner rolls. They are by far the best I've ever had. And they serve them with both apple butter & red raspberry preserves. Supposedly they sell them in bulk as well. I'd go over there again just for the rolls and I'm not even a bread person. And for all of that and a glass of tea, it was $39! Now the only reasons I'm not giving five stars is that not all of the employees were wearing masks and some who were, did not have them covering up their noses as well as their mouth. I know it's a more rural area than Indianapolis, but still it's still a big deal right now. I also had a couple of little gnats that were driving me crazy, but they're harmless.
