Don't get me wrong, kitchens get backed up and that's totally okay. The part that ruined it was that our server walked past us several times and didn't even acknowledge us. One of our favorite Kauai traditions is having our last dinner at The Beach House. This year we decided to go a night early, and as always, the sunset, atmosphere, and company were beautiful. We started with a couple of drinks at the bar (good, but wow... almost $50 for two drinks and my "5-ounce" rosé looked more like 3! The hostess was incredibly kind and found us a wonderful patio table after our first one wasn't quite right, and our server was outstanding all evening. We brought a special bottle from our cellar, enjoyed the fresh catch of the day, and had a lovely evening together. But if I'm being honest, the food and presentation just weren't what we've come to expect from The Beach House. I usually take pictures of every dish, but this time nothing inspired me. The only photo I took was of the complimentary birthday dessert because I was honestly shocked by how underwhelming it looked. To top it off, we found out at the end that the corkage fee was $45. My husband, who is a sommelier and has been in the wine business for many years, kindly asked if they would consider waiving the corkage. They checked with the manager, but the answer was no. No hard feelings toward our wonderful server--we tipped him well because he truly took great care of us. We still had a beautiful night because that's what matters most. But Beach House... this is such a special tradition for us, and this visit just didn't feel like the fine dining experience we've always loved. Here's hoping it was just an off night. read more

My favorite meal during my vacation. Be aware of the 4% tip automatically added to the bill. My husband and I got here at around 7pm to watch the sunset and take some pretty photos. Note that a section of the area is public so you don't need to be a customer at The Beach House to get pretty photos. Parking is often a challenge, but we found free parking next to the beach. I recommend arriving early if you don't want to use the restaurant valet. We were seated approximately 10 minutes after our booking time (7:30pm). We ordered the lobster and mahi mahi pasta, as well as the filet mignon with mash and green beans. We kept drinks low-key with a Hawaiian cola and a house made ginger beer. Service was speedy, friendly and attentive. I expected live music but there was none during our visit, which was disappointing. We loved the complimentary foccacia - it was hot, fresh and flavorful. The lobster was fresh and sweet, the mahi mahi tender and mild. The pasta was homemade and the sauce was absolutely delicious - creamy and cheesy, with tomatoes and onion. My husband's steak was tender, and the mashed potatoes were delicious. Both mains were very generous portions. We then enjoyed dessert. We chose the basque cheesecake and the mochi chocolate cake. The cheesecake was decadently rich and creamy, almost melted in the middle. The mochi cake was moist, fluffy on the outside and a little denser in the middle. I highly recommend both. What a gorgeous spot! We decided to come here for dinner (celebrating Hubby's bday) on our last night on Kauai. They don't lie about the views. Sunset views were the best. It can get crowded from outside the restaurant but still definitely one to see. We were greeted by Michael who was very friendly and helped us with our questions. I had the Mac Nut crusted fish. The rice was a little bland but the bok choy and sauce were great. We had the crab cakes as an appetizer and they were delicious but you only get two. Hubby had the ribeye and he said it was ok, but not terrible. My son ate up the filet mignon. Since we were celebrating a birthday, they gave us a chocolate mochi cake with ice cream and it was great- not too sweet. Overall, a great place to check out but wouldn't come back multiple times. The Beach House in Poipu is one of the most highly recommended restaurants on Kauai for a special evening with family and friends. With arguably some of the best waterfront seating and sunset views on the island, it's easy to see why many consider it a premier fine dining destination. This was our first visit, and we were lucky enough to get a reservation just before sunset. We started with the famous Monkeypod Mai Tai and shared several appetizers. The standout dishes were the fresh fish, the lobster pasta, and the crab cakes, each was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive, and the menu offered plenty of great options. This restaurant came recommended on behalf of some family/friends who had spent time in Kauai and, while the experience was overall very good, there are a couple reasons I've giving it 4 stars instead of 5. First off, this place is absolutely stunning, especially at sunset, and the constant buzz of guests certainly indicates the restaurant does well for itself. One of the most beautiful places I had the opportunity to eat on the island. Second, the food is amazing! I ordered their seared ahi tuna, which is day boat (meaning it's caught that very same day). It was sooo fresh, a great portion size, and the jalapeño potatoes and soy/ginger type sauce it comes served with is mind blowingly good. Debatably the best ahi tuna steak I've had in my life! The only reasons I give it four stars is because service was a bit slow and because of the price point. Though it's hard to blame them with how busy the restaurant was, we were seated late and ended up spending about 2.5 hours at the restaurant, which is longer than I would've liked to spend at dinner. The price was also a bit elevated (ex: a salad with chicken is $33), though I can't say I'm too surprised being that it's Hawai'i. My parents came here on their honeymoon over 35 years ago, and told us we had to swing by here to catch some of the best sunsets ever. They were not wrong in that fact! We had a reservation at 8:15 and made sure to show up early to watch the sunset. It was spectacular. When it was time to check in, we were told it would just be a few minutes, but unfortunately we waited 30 minutes later. We finally got seated, and were greeted with water and warm bread (amazing bread by the way). I don't eat much seafood besides shrimp, so was hoping they'd have some good non seafood options, but they didn't have a ton, so I got the arugula and goat cheese salad with chicken. I love the Beach House. It is my family's favorite restaurant. And one of my best friends got married here a few years ago. You get the most beautiful view at sunset, with great food and drinks. Yes, The Beach House is on the pricier side, but that is because you are getting such high quality food and location. Plus, the service is amazing here as well. They try to ensure that every table has some sort of view of the ocean. And they offer valet parking for $5. Our group of 5 started with the dumplings, and we all really loved the flavor and the sauce that the dumplings came with. My sister in law and I both ordered the lobster pasta. This. Is. Amazing. It is worth it. The lobster was perfectly cooked, the other seafood was a great pairing as well. The noodles themselves were perfectly al dente and the sauce was delectable. Our waiter brought more bread so we could soak up all the sauce. Yum! My dad loves their macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi and couldn't resist getting that. He loved it. I've also had their lobster bisque which is incredible, and all of their desserts are scrumptious! You truly cannot go wrong. We of course came for the sunset which was incredible. And we all had plenty of mai tai's! We will be continue to come back to The Beach House whenever we visit this beautiful island. (Also, seriously, their weddings are incredible. The Mai Tai ha Kula Organic Silver and Dark Rums, Fresh Lime Juice, House Made Macadamia Nut Orgeat, Orange Curacao, and Honey Lillikoi Foam. We had the house made focaccia that was beyond heavenly. And then the Coconut Shrimp that had Coconut Sauce, Ginger, Garlic, Jalapeno Relish, Cilantro and Lime. For my main I went with the Seared Ahi Steak that was served with Jalapeno Mashed Potatos, Chili Broccoli, and a Soy Sesame Maui Onion Sauce. Recommended by a total stranger in an airport--and it absolutely did not disappoint. This place is definitely pricey, but worth every single penny. We ordered the Keiki Chicken, Macadamia Nut Crusted Fresh Hawaiian Fish, Seared Ahi Steak, and Filet Mignon. All were excellent choices, but I highly recommend the Seared Ahi. The sauce served on the side is absolutely mouth-watering, and the jalapeño mashed potatoes were unreal. My only regret is waiting until our last day on the island to eat here, because I 100% would've come back a second time. It was a bit loud, but that was expected based on other reviews, so it didn't bother us. We had an 8:00 PM reservation, but were offered bar seating if we could find space--and surprisingly, they accommodated all five of us (kids included), likely due to how busy they were. We ended up snagging five bar seats and enjoyed dinner an hour earlier than planned. The ambiance is lively, with beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. Just note that if it's raining (which happens often), indoor seating may be your only option. Bottom line: don't pass up a meal here--you won't regret it. Just make sure you plan financially. For reference, our meal for five (2 kids, 3 alcoholic drinks) came out to around $400 with tip. Worth it. read more

The Beach House has an incredible location, especially for watching the sunset and taking photos. The setting and views are definitely the highlight. I've been here a few times over the past 20 years, and while the food is good, I wouldn't say it's exceptional, especially considering the prices. You're probably paying $8-12 more per dish compared with a restaurant like Tidepools for similar food, and in my experience, the quality isn't quite as good. For example, we ordered the special, which was a fish dish, and unfortunately it was prepared quite dry. At these prices, I would expect the food to be a little more impressive. Parking is another issue. Valet parking is almost a necessity because finding a parking spot can be extremely difficult. There is a standard $5 valet fee, which is reasonable, but the valet makes a point of letting you know that anything you give above the $5 goes directly to them. I didn't particularly care for that approach, it felt a little unnecessary. Personally, I prefer Tidepools. I think the ambience is better, and I also prefer the food. The Beach House is clearly charging a premium because of its incredible location, which I understand, but overall I think Tidepools offers a better dining experience for the money. If you're looking for a beautiful setting to enjoy the sunset and take some great photos, The Beach House is hard to beat. Just keep in mind that you're paying a premium for the location. read more

This restaurant is located right on the beach with tables situated out on the grass facing the ocean. The perfect spot for a sunset photo, the best Mai Tai in Hawaii, by Hawaii Life magazine. Book ahead as it is a very popular spot especially around happy hour from 3:30-4:30! We came early and sat at the bar and watched the sunset. What we had: Crab cakes to start. Came hot out of the pan with a side of watercress, orange slices and tomatoes. The crab cakes were delicious and not full of fillers! Main- lobster and fish pasta A mixture of mahi mahi and ahi tuna as well as half a lobster and one claw's worth of meat mixed in! It was fantastic! Last year when we went to Kauai, my husband's parents came along. They asked us if we go to The Beach House. We had never been, despite it being directly across the street from our condos. They go to Maui every year, and they love the Monkeypod. Since both restaurants are owned by the same company, they wanted to go over for "the best" Mai Tais in Hawaii. We went over for Happy Hour. (Literally ONE hour every day, 3:30-4:30pm.) Happy hour Mai Tais (cocktails) are $4 off ($17 HH price). Pupus are $5 off. (We got potstickers $20 HH price.) Beers are $2 off ($10 HH price). So while the prices are on the high end (even happy hour) it is Hawaii so that is to be expected! Now every time we go to Kauai, The Beach House is on the itinerary! (We average 2 visits every trip!) We found out that the beach house serves "Monkeypod Mai-tais" - an amazing mai-tai you can get from the Monkeypod restaurant on Maui. It is one of our favorites so we had to come try it. We showed up at 8:30 (they close at 9) and told the host that we just wanted a table for drinks. They said no problem, took my phone number and I received a text that we had a reservation. The host said to wait in the lobby while they waited for a 4 person table to free up. 20 minutes later after seeing many people leave the restaurant I figured there had to be a table available so I went and asked the hostess what the status was and they said they didn't know we were waiting for a table. The hostess said "nobody told me" Uhh... hello? You took my phone number and I received an opentable text that I had a reservation. Who is telling who? It should be in your system in front of you. The hostess shrugged and said sorry. The infuriating part of this was sitting there in the waiting area being ignored by all the staff while watching the hostesses and the valet parking guys flirt and talk gossip. We were obviously not a priority and they were "checked out" for the evening since it was almost closing time. They did finally seat us and we ordered the mai-tais, but sadly they were not the same. The foam (which is what makes the mai tai so great) was really sour - not the same as you can get from the original restaurant. More broadly, I thought with this being such a nice restaurant, they would make more of an attempt to say they were sorry about ignoring us, but they didn't.
