The Hope and Anchor bills itself as the oldest licensed pub in Australia. It was located just…read morearound the corner from our Downtown Hobart Hotel, and was our first meal after landing in Australia (19 hour time difference). Fish and Chips and a local beer were on tap for our meal, and it was all very good. We ordered and paid for our meal at the bar, and enjoyed our time at a high table by the window. We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

Here's what we noticed: - It was a Monday night and we came in around 6:30 PM, and the place was already packed. We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.

I honestly wish I would've gotten better photos but I was having so much fun enjoying my experience…read moreand food that I didn't care! This place reminded me of one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn while miles away in Hobart Tasmania. The vibes were impeccable. People were singing along to the record player that filled the room with sweet ballads and sing-alongs. On top of that the dining area shares a space with the kitchen so you pretty much get to watch as the chef prepares everything to order. Now, of course, there are some premade portions to the dinner, but nonetheless seeing the chefs precision to detail, timing and flow was such a treat. The service here was also amazing. My glass wasn't empty the entire three hours we stayed. And even though the menu was tiny, everything was so delicious from the oysters in the beginning to the herby pasta in the end. I had such a fantastic time here definitely will return next time I'm in town.

Stopped in here for a quick glass of wine before a nice dinner at Dier Makr. The vibe is great,…read morerecord player, dim lights, candles, and tons of wine on display. Staff here is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about wine, wine making, and food. The wines by the glass change pretty frequently, however for reference I had a great Riesling and Rosé. Also ordered the prosciutto toast which was borderline incredible. The richness of the dish was amazing. Definitely a great place to enjoy a couple glasses of wine, and a bit of food!

We are in Hobart and wanted a nice place to eat, with great atmosphere, and good seafood. A friend…read morehad recommended Mures Upper Deck so we went... We're glad we did! Here's what we noticed: - A tour guy had told us that Mures Upoer Deck would be the same food as on the lower level, just pricier, but I don't think that is true. The menu was very broad, there's great cocktails, and a comprehensive wine list, and food that you can't get in the more fast food-like atmosphere down below. - We had a reservation and when we arrived, the place was practically empty. They seated us at a table by the window; the views were beautiful. - We decided to order cocktails off their cocktail menu, although some of the cocktails were supposed to be smoked and the server said their smoker wasn't working. We got them anyway and they were very nice. - We decided to start with a few oysters and the octopus salad. Both were really tasty. For our main course, my wife and I split the full flathead fish, which seemed to be a special that day. When it came out, we asked our server how to cut it, and he said he had never done it before so he didn't know himself, but that the chef cuts down the middle so that's what we did. The fish was really nicely done, and the other items on the plate added to it all very well. - Service was pretty good, but as I've noted, our server didn't seem to be very experienced, coming by our table way too much to check in. I think at some point he got the message. I wanted to just eat my dinner. Bottom line: We had a great experience at Mures Upper Deck and would recommend it to anyone looking for a little fancier evening.

The seafood chowder was an absolute dream--rich, creamy, and brimming with perfectly cooked seafood. Each spoonful was happiness and joy. We were so glad to have stumbled upon this spot.
