We dined here for lunch while tooling around Tasmania on a four-night driving trip, late December 2019.
The views of the water and the nearby beach are stunning. The restaurant feels very casual and relaxed, but the food that we sampled is very good. TBH - we didn't really order that much off their menu, but here's what we ate:
We ordered a dozen oysters - they were well-priced at $2.50 per oyster (well, it was cheaper for a dozen) -- whereas we'd paid $4.50 per oyster in Hobart (ouch!)
Oysters were local - from somewhere near Freycinet (if I recall correctly) which is fairly close to Bicheno anyway.
The oysters were absolutely superb! Extremely fresh, not too briny, small (though slightly bigger than Sydney Rock Oysters - I don't like the big meaty varieties), really delicious and so creamy! We were blown away by their quality. I remarked to our server ( owner / manager ?) how wonderful they tasted and she replied "It's because we shuck them to order," meaning, not in advance... Lovely!
I have to mention the outstanding bottle of wine we enjoyed with the oysters - Freycinet Wineglass Sauvignon Blanc (2017 I think?) -- also local, and one of the most delightful Sauv Blancs I have ever tasted! No joke. (And we were in NZ prior to Tassie...!)
So, the pairing of this crisp, very fruity and fragrant wine with the fresh oysters was truly sublime.
We weren't actually that hungry so we asked if the kitchen could put together a large garden salad for the two of us to share, which they happily did, and it was lovely and light with grated carrot, sliced cucumbers & tomatoes, plus lettuce (natch) and a nice vinaigrette dressing. I forget what they charged us for that, but it definitely was reasonably priced.
Such a simple and casual meal, yet so memorable. Truly one of the highlights of our trip around Tassie (which included a very posh NYE degustation dinner at Peppers Cradle Mtn Lodge - review to follow) - so that's saying something!
Highly recommended for a pleasant lunch so you can enjoy the vista. Sunset would be a nice experience here, too. read more
