Three bears porridge and breakfast sandwich was a HIT!!! The porridge alone filled me up and was delicious. Highly recommend checking this place out. It's a cool lil vibe they have going on in here. The service was fast and friendly. The food was worth every dollar. If you are in Hobart and haven't had your breakfast and coffee yet, stop right here and you will get yourself on the right track.

Great ginger beer

Enjoyed a late lunch after arriving in Hobart today, friendly service, enjoyed the special of the day beef burrito bowl which came with delicious guacamole and a ginger beer. Great outdoor patio area eclectic breakfast, brunch, lunch spot in heart of Salamanca square

Pretty popular cafe in Hobart. Visited in the morning around brunch time and it was really busy, unfortunately due to this we had to wait about 20mins for a table, but we did note they took table bookings which is the first time I've seen in a cafe. Would have been quicker if there weren't several tables running coffee meetings. Once seated things were good. Service relatively prompt and friendly and the food of good quality. Ordered the packed roti, which is huge and is well complimented by the chilli/sweet finish. Flat white coffee was average to good. A decent spot to have breakfast - just try to avoid the queues/busy times... early birds likely win or those who make a booking.

Locals and tourists alike are fans of this joint, and it's fair to see why. The coffee's great, the food is delicious, the decor's kitschy cool, the staff are friendly, and you can get your laundry done while you eat. Located right up in the top left corner of Salamanca Square (near the giant chess board), the all-day breakfast menu runs right through until 3pm. Table service, so pull up a chair and get settled in (either inside or outside) and take your time deciding what treat you'll have from the menu. Something for everyone, with staples like eggs benedict or plenty of interesting options like the "lame name dish" or ricotta & spiced pumpkin hotcakes. Even the drinks menu is fully loaded, with treats like Dutch hot chocolate or real mango smoothies. Consider maximising your coffee or hot choc experience with a bowl-sized serving. One of (if not) the best places for brekky at Salamanca.

It's a cafe! It's a laundromat! It's awesome! Come one, come all to get your laundry done whilst enjoying a very fulfilling meal. That is a guarantee you can live by if you stop in here. We enjoyed the retro feel of the cafe with hipster art and the friendliest of service. And did I mention the meal? Huge portions and you get your money's worth. The taste is definitely on point. Roti stuffed goodness filled to the brim with loads of flavour and add any side to make your dish a monster size. As if that wasn't enough, coffee is delicious! I can see why the colourful tables quickly filled on a Monday morning. I would be here all the time if I lived nearby. Forget the market, this place can easily put Salamanca on the map!

So many cafes these days are just variations on a theme, so Machine Laundry Cafe was a refreshing change, and not just because you could do your laundry while you wait. Yes there were the standards like fruit topped porridge, muffins and all those permutations of eggs on toast, but there were heaps of exciting items on the menu like scrambled eggs and chilli jam stuffed roti and parmesan and pancetta pancakes. But when you wave mushrooms, nay a TRIO of mushrooms in front of me, there's no going back. Both my friend and I ordered The Magic Mushie - and oh was it magical! It was all garlicky fried mushrooms (not soggy like many other shameful cafes), crunchy fresh rocket, runny poached eggs, salty fetta, herbacious salsa verde and soft tangy sourdough - oh mama, take me back there now! I loved the mismatched op shop plates and the wooden clothes horse at the entrance standing in for a magazine rack - great selection too, with the usual newpapers, some interesting magazines and a scribble book! Plenty to keep you entertained, and if all else fails you can just watch the spellbinding rhythm of the tumble driers.

Came highly recommended, this stood to it's reputation. Excellent service topped off with an cup of coffee (flat white). Waitress recommended the salmon and eggs royale. The caramelised onion with a generous amount of tassie salmon, free range eggs, spinach and perfect sourdough. Loved every bite. Must visit if you are in Hobart.

Eggs royale

This was a very unique eatery which featured great interruptions of breakfast while within the same establishment, one could do laundry. Breakfast was great and the cheese cake based French today was hardy, but not really heart healthy. Eggs royale was delicious with eggs perfectly mated to a vingery hollandaise. The grilled onions complemented the smoked salmon and spinach well.

Caramelised onion, spinach and Parmesan pancakes

We spent 3 days in Hobart and had 3 breakfasts at Machine Laundry Cafe! The menu is really interesting-not just your usual poached eggs on sourdough with avocado and feta...over our 3 visits we shared caramelised onion, spinach and Parmesan pancakes, scrambled egg roti wrap and scrambled egg and feta on toast with beetroot relish and they were all a delight. (Note we got the pancakes on all 3 days they were so good!) The coffee was good, the service was great and they had a great little selection of treats-the brownie is a must try. Our only regret is we didn't try the vanilla bean oats with stewed rhubarb and crushed macadamia nuts-but if we're back in Hobart we'll definitely be back to try it.

There's a good reason this place is so popular. On a Sunday morning with the sun shining, I treated myself to a brekky bonanza and was thoroughly impressed by both the food and service. The "Old New Egg Dish" was heartily devoured but I stopped short of licking my plate as it was only my first time and I was doing my best to maintain a sense of Melbourne snobbery. The coffee was excellent, although the brewed chai lacked complexity. If you're backpacking, bring your laundry, seriously!

Hip little outdoor area

Was recommended Machine by some locals as the "premiere" brunch spot in Hobart. Walking up I was immediately reminded of Melbourne, the hip outdoor area littered with hip folk sipping on lattes. Walked inside to see a fully functional laundry. That just happened to have a cafe inside. Sat down and promptly ordered a latte along with some house made beans and mushrooms. The mushrooms were lukewarm, yet tasty, but the beans were beyond average. Still hard, lacking flavour, no redeeming quality. The coffee was nothing amazing to write home about, and my co-worker's meal was much the same. Pricey for the amount and quality of food. Wouldn't bother heading back.

Great little place with a retro 60s vibe. Indoor space was at a premium which made things cramped in a rainy day.

Fish and Chips and a local beer were on tap for our meal, and it was all very good. We ordered and paid for our meal at the bar, and enjoyed our time at a high table by the window. We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

Here's what we noticed: - It was a Monday night and we came in around 6:30 PM, and the place was already packed. We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.

In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. It should have at least come with some kind of salad or string beans or SOMETHING. Or been bigger. 4/5.
