I came here during my trip to Acadia/Bar Harbor during the third week of October. Many other places were already closed for the season, but the Barnacle was thankfully open. If there's one thing to get here, it's the oysters. It was apparently local to the area (don't know the exact name), but wow -- they were probably the best oysters that I've ever had. Still dreaming about those oysters. The mussel pot was good, but it wasn't out of the ordinary. I loved the bread that came with it. The clam chowder, while I enjoyed the flavor, was average; it could have used more clams. There was only one person tending bar and serving food/drinks, but I was still very happy and impressed with the service. He was very friendly and made sure that we got our table cleaned as soon as the party before us left, and got us our requests in a very timely manner. This place is definitely on the list whenever I go back to Bar Harbor. read more

We came here for the oysters but since it was too early in the season (early June) the kitchen was still closed for reservation but the bartender, Cosmo, gave us several recs around the town to get oysters. They did have popcorn so you can snack while you drink. However, we started and ended our night here with cocktails (after taking a break to get oysters). The bartender and locals we met here became fast friends. The cocktails and vibes were immaculate. This is by far my favorite bar we visited in town. This is a 10/10 for me if you want a chance to chat with locals in the service industry and get a feel for what it's like to live in Bar Harbor as a local. read more

We went to the barnacle for a quick drink and some apps. They had a small menu but we got the pretzel and a dozen oysters along with the nitro martini and a whaleboat ipa. The oysters tasted fresh and the pretzel was good even though the salt wasn't stuck to it. We weren't fans of the cheese that came with the pretzel. The martini tasted good and was strong. Barnacle doesn't do a lot but they do it incredibly well. One of a kind oysters harvested from two brothers who live on an adjacent island. The Mignonette was majestic, absolutely incredible. Then finished off with a home made pretzel, home made beer cheese, and plenty of cocktails and beer. That's the extent of offerings but everything is literally as good as it could be. These were probably some of the best oysters I've ever had. I've had oysters on both coasts and these had a depth of flavor that I've yet to find in any other. Creamy at the start and then transitioning to a more briny taste followed by a significant sweetness that lingers after every shell. When I went, they only had one kind of oyster but after 2 dozen, I can safely say they did not disappoint. The service was also great despite there only being one waitress/hostess/bar tender. She was great and you could tell she loved her job. Highly recommend coming here for the best oysters in Maine! The pretzel was also homemade and delicious. read more

Three massive picnic benches outside Bivalves for days Well-stocked bar (kombucha and nitro brew options if you're not drinking!) We needed nothing more than the Barnacle on our first night in Bar Harbor. We ordered a couple of glasses of white wine, a couple of dark n' stormies, clam chowder, oysters and steamed mussels. The oysters were amazing - the owner said he was only one of three companies in the area to receive the oysters - and I gotta say they were fantastic. Really nice texture and creamier than most atlantic oysters I've had. The mussels were great too and came with 4 pieces of bread - THAT is what I'm talking about (none of that one piece and having to ask for more). The Barnacle is GREAT! Probably the best oysters we've ever had (they were from the Cranberry Islands nearby) and their homemade mignonette was suburb. The food menu consists of oysters and a huge pretzel accompanied by mustard. They have a full bar (of top choices) and MANY local beers, plus several wines. We enjoyed the half dozen oysters, martini, and the dark and stormy so much that we asked them to just order us the same thing again. And it was just as good the second time. The restaurant is very small and unassuming. Staff was very friendly and personable, had great rapport with both tourists and locals that were present during my visit. There were a lot of drink options and a small food menu. This was one of my last days in Maine, and I couldn't leave without ordering a lobster roll. I also ordered half a dozen raw oysters. I was a little disappointed to see lettuce in my roll, but it was barely noticeable. They gave you a generous portion of lobster chunks here. Oysters tasted fresh.
