Maine Oysters on the Half Shell
Christy W.

We had a lovely table overlooking Bar Harbor -- the view alone was worth it, but the food made it even better! The lobster bisque was rich and flavorful, the oysters were fresh and perfectly light, and the hot lobster roll was absolutely delicious. What really impressed us was our server, Tyler, who paced the meal beautifully. We never felt rushed -- everything came out with perfect timing. We were able to truly enjoy each course: first the bisque, then the oysters, and finally the lobster roll (which they even split for us, along with the slaw). Speaking of slaw, their vinegar-based coleslaw was a pleasant surprise -- I'd never had it that way before and absolutely loved it. A wonderful lunch experience all around -- great food, service, and view!

4.25 stars Service was fantastic Menu had multiple vegetables and we loved the Cauliflower The seafood fettuccine was a large portion - shrimp, lobster and fish were perfectly cooked. The mussels were a little off and the scallops were average. As a whole the dish was good but not amazing The pork chop was delicious The blueberry crisp was okay Overall quality and prices were good for the area

Nice place for dinner, a little bit more upscale than most restaurants in the area but still fairly casual. They have labelled vegan options on the menu, though there are not a ton. I had the cauliflower piccata, which was not bad. My mom had one of the two specials for the day, which was a haddock dish, and she was very impressed with her meal. They also have a kids menu. We also got a lobster bisque to go, which I was told was very very good. The inside environment is really nice, and the servers and staff are very professional. Our waitress ground black pepper freshly onto our food when it came out. Prices are not outrageous, especially compared to nearby restaurants.

Excellent, well established restaurant in a prime location in Bar Harbor! PROs: Very attentive, and courteous staff - our server Nicole did a stellar job. Bathrooms are clean & family friendly. Atmosphere is very welcoming with a nautical feel. I highly recommend you visit the upstairs lounge. They had very nice 25% off happy hour on certain items that were generous. We had the lobster roll, kids grilled shrimp, IPA, & oysters off the shell. All were EXCELLENT! CONs: Parking is tough, but that's an issue in the city, not necessarily this places fault.

We had reservations and it seems to be popular. A couple walked in and was told the wait would be over 45 mins. We sat in the upstairs dining room which was spacious. The waiter was nice and attentive and recited the 4 fish specials of the day. Hubby ordered the duck breast which came with what looked like a brown rice pilaf and broccolini. I ordered the 3 crab cake dinner and it came with the same vegt and rice. We shared a Caesar salad that resembled a green salad, added 2 anchovies - the best part. My cup of lobster bisque was good. I've had better bisque as with the crab cakes (Maine rock crab) , both were too salty. The crab cakes were crispy on the outside. I make crab cakes at home when Dungeness crab is in season and mine taste better, and I've had better ones at other restaurants. Hubby thought the duck breast was less chewy than what he ate last night. The portions were more than enough for us and we had no room for dessert.

We chose this restaurant for our anniversary lunch. We had made reservations and they quickly escorted us upstairs. They brought our drinks and then took our order after answering our questions. For an appetizer we ordered the Cauliflower with lemon caper sauce. It was delicious. I ordered the Catch of the Day - Panko Crusted Hallbut with Broccolini and wild and white rice. My meal was not only lovely to look at, but so yummy. My partner ordered clam chowder, Halibut sandwich and a side salad. He was quite happy with his meal also. The staff was attentive and provided great service. Even with several other diners upstairs, it was quiet. A perfect place for our anniversary.

Came here for the late lunch with a group of 4 and a child. They put us in the separate room which was amazing. We really appreciated that. Service was super friendly and attentive, we were really happy with them. The menu is very large and has many different options, including a large kids menu. We ordered a lot of things: burger, beet salad, mussels, crab cakes, crab stuffed mushrooms, and shrimp dish for the child. Child plate came with lots of shrimp, amazing wild rice and broccolini. Was the best children's plate we have ever seen. Our toddler loved it very much, even though he is a picky eater. He also love the mussels. All the food was amazing. We also had some blueberry lemonade that was super tasty. Ambience is traditional, but in a good way. It is more upscale than most other places in the area, but not more expensive. I would say it was the best place in Bar Harbor and we tried a lot of them.

Normally, we won't eat at Bar Harbor because it's really pricey and it's a tourist trap, and you can get better seafood somewhere else without breaking the bank. But we had a friend with us who hadn't been to Bar Harbor. So, we decided to eat here and Galyn's delivered. The mussels appetizer was incredible with a nice twist of Dijon. I can perhaps eat 2 bowls of that. For $14, it was inexpensive! And the stuffed mushrooms were delicious as well. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. The serving was huge, but the taste was not your traditional type. So, I asked our server what was in it, and he told me it was made with "salt pork," which gives it a rich, savory taste. It was delicious, but it was like eating potato soup with clams. I honestly won't order it again. My friend enjoyed her bowl of lobster bisque, and we were too full to order entrees. Our server was great, and we were seated near the window with a nice view of the harbor. Why not 5 stars? Well, I asked the market price for steamed lobster and it was $42! And the lobster linguini was $48! That's ridiculous. We went back to the house and ordered 6 steamed hardshell lobsters from Market Basket for $85. So if you're a tourist, save yourself some $$$ and order it from a shack, there are so many of those in Maine.

Just where we sat not our food.

Stopped in for lunch at Galyn's and really enjoyed the atmosphere, comfortable, welcoming, and the air conditioning was gloriously cold on a hot Maine day. We both ordered the lobster roll. It was solid not the best I've ever had, but definitely better than what we had the other day. Fresh lobster, nicely done. The chips were just plain Lay's, nothing special there. The coleslaw was house-made, which I appreciated. I liked it, but my wife thought it was too sweet for her taste. All in all, a good lunch spot and worth a visit. Was very happy with the service. Would have rated higher but price was high for what we received.

The bartenders Nicole and Amber were friendly and knowledgeable on the area. They were on top of all service at the bar area. The ciabatta bread appetizer was fresh and delicious. The blueberry margarita, sangria, and ales were delicious. there is a happy hour from 2 to 5 PM so don't miss that. for dinner, we had the haddock that was Parmesan encrusted, and came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was delicious.

Highly recommend this place if you're staying in Bar Harbor for a couple nights. I really enjoyed the New England east coast vibe this place had. Pretty much every restaurant has that same kind of atmosphere. The food quality matches the pricing and you can never go wrong with seafood by the ocean. Our server was fantastic! Check this place out!

Stopped by this place after going on a cruise on a schooner we stopped here for dinner. It was before the rush so it was an early dinner so we got a seat by the window looking at the harbor. Service was excellent and the waiter was helpful on choices. By now I had enough whole lobster and I wanted something different. Started with a Cesar salad with anchovies and lobster bisque (still wanted lobster but didn't want the work). I like the Cesar salad but I don't get the anchovies back home so that made it special. The lobster bisque was good, I mean the seafood in Maine is delicious so the soup was meaty with lobster. I had the Frenchman bay stew. Fresh seafood is good period. This was a recommendation from our waiter. My wife had the stuff pork chop and she said it was good along with the broccolini. Overall it was a very good dinner and since we ate before the dinner crowd the service was excellent.

Maine Combination

Delicious food, wonderful service, great atmosphere. Great location on Main Street with beautiful views of the harbor, Galyn's delivers incredible, fresh seafood worthy of a dinner stop. Their Maine Combination plate was a great sampler for their various seafoods - the lobster was perfection, and their 3 dipping sauces complimented each of the items well. Both the clam chowder and the lobster bisque were wonderful. As would be expected in Maine, they have a decent selection of delicious blueberry items. Their blueberry lemonade was super refreshing, and their blueberry margarita was a great twist on the classic margarita. Grabbing the Maine blueberry-apple crisp for dessert is a must - the warm crisp w/ the cold ice cream... Yum! Service here was great. We showed up later at night and were able to get seated without issue. They do offer same-day reservations, which I'd definitely recommend - especially in a busier season. Highly recommend stopping by for a delicious dinner that showcases the delicious seafood Maine has to offer.

The food and service were excellent. Start with the lobster bisque. I loved the lobster fettuccine and my wife enjoyed the Galyns pasta.

Do they take reservations?

Yes and do go there

Do they have good gluten free options?

I feel sure they do. I can think of several items on the menu that would be gluten free as I understand it.

Is it casual or upscale?

It's casual. Could you make it upscale? Sure, because there are white table clothes and the ambiance is very nice. However, many of the customers seemed to be tourists walking in off the streets and dressed comfortably.

The service was well trained but not stuffy in the slightest. Over our two nights we tried - The local oysters, beet salad, salmon dish, halibut fish. Second night - Seared albacore, more oysters (on happy hour), grilled cornbread and short rib. Every single dish was good to great! I have to shout o their oysters. I am not an oyster girlie but am now converted. So fresh and briny with perfect cocktail sauce and a scallion mignonette. A bit fattier than I usually prefer, but still flavorful and tender. Slightly on the pricey side, but I didn't feel ripped off. Originally, I had my eye on the burger, but was told it was no longer available by the time we ordered, which was a bummer. My wife had the summer salad and enjoyed it. Drinks were well-made (pictured), and the bar staff was fantastic--friendly and attentive. Only major downside? It was hot inside. Like, uncomfortably hot for me and my wife, which never happens. Definitely took away from the overall vibe. That said, I'd still come back just maybe not on such a hot day?

We requested to sit by the window to have my birthday lunch and loved watching the sun set over the water. This is in a prime spot right by the wharf and has a gorgeous view of the water by the windows, but has a great bar and more seating in the back. Menu is huge with sandwiches, fish, pizzas, salads, etc. We went with the warmed brown butter lobster roll and a margarita pizza add sausage. My husband is a pizza guy - has it like 5x a week - so he's picky. He loved this pizza and said it was really top tier. I also thought it was very good - crust and toppings all great and cooked well. Sometimes margarita pizzas are runny due to less cheese/sauce ratio but this one was good and crust was yummy. The lobster roll was a different way to have it - I usually have it in the mayonnaise sauce chilled, this one was warmed up with brown butter on a delicious bun. Very good. They have 3 different lobster rolls on the menu to satisfy whatever the craving/need. For desset - we chose the chocolate death parfait. It was SO good. Not something I would usually get bc it was so heavy - but we were in town for my birthday so, treat yo self! Layers of chocolate cake, dense white marscapone cream and chocolate mousse with caramel and toffee chunks. Yeah, sign me up for that. Don't forget to visit their gift shop directly underneath and off to the side - it's huge! It actually has far more than the standard cup and t-shirt or hat. Expect loads of gifts and souvenirs and some awesome t-shirts. We got more than a few things in this surprise shop. 100% recommend this place.
