This is a good example of the other end of the Bellingham drunk/pot/college munchie rating factor. Most people eat bagels in the morning times while sober, so this is a more accurate review of the quality of the food. Good bagels, but not 5 star. I can't tell if they're supposed to be Montreal style, they are a little flatter and denser than typical NYC style bagels. I'm a fan of both and so far these are the best bagels in Bellingham. They actually taste like a bagel. Bagels are not just round bread donuts, they have a distinct texture to them where the outside is a nice crisp but not crunchy shell protecting the chewy dense goodness on the inside. They should not be crumbly or cakey on the inside. Tasty bagels, lots of good flavors, I'm working my way through them. The poppy seed and everything bagels don't have as much topping as I would like. Its like they sprinkled on toppings instead of dipping the bagel into a pile of stuff and coating the whole top... They have tons of seating. I have not figured out the difference between ordering at the main counter vs. the express counter. The mornings I go in at 730 am they still seem to be setting up, express counter isn't always ready, and things/service aren't quite as good as they should be. I don't remember what time they open, but it has taken at least 15 mins to get my bagel and schmear ordered, prepped, and taken out the door on a few occasions. read more

Stopped here for a quick breakfast while traveling. I got the roasted garlic sandwich on the garlic bagel as well as a garlic bagel with the jalapeno shmear. They were both fantastic. The bagel itself was warm, fresh, chewy and delicious. The sandwich was very fresh and not at all heavy like most places. The jalapeno shmear was fantastic but they do add way too much. Next time I'll probably ask for half as much, they literally pile it on with an ice-cream scoop. My friend got a couple of everything bagels with some sweeter shmear and said he really liked them. Overall a fantastic spot for quick fresh bagels. I'd most certainly stop here again when I'm in the area. read more

A bagel is a bagel, is a bagel. But it's something about a fresh bagel that is warm, fresh out of the oven. Crossing the canadian border from Vancouver, the Bellingham pit stop is a must, and if you're in the mood for a small snack, then this is a place to check out. It's nothing fancy, but the workers definitely bumped my 3-star offering up to 4-stars. They were friendly and had good interaction with the customers. Just an observation, but it could be just that Bellingham is much different that your typical Angeleno bagel worker. We tried the salmon (lax) spread which was just meh, but the winner was definitely the bagel. They had a variety of different bagels. read more

Would somebody please put this place out of its--and my--misery? I'm dead serious: if there are any entrepreneurs/restaurateurs perusing Yelp for business opportunities in the small-town PNW, I can offer you a sure bet. Come to Bellingham and open a decent, competently run and staffed bagel shop. I predict it would take a month or two, at the most, before you were the only bagel shop in town. Where to start? How about: 1. The service, or lack thereof. There are typically about ten employees who appear to be front-of-the-house, and maybe another ten in the back making bagels. Regardless of the eight or so employees who will cross your path as you stand at the counter waiting for service, you will mostly be ignored. Sometimes you will stand at said counter for 10 minutes, will make polite eye contact with an employee (or several) and will still be ignored. (Pro tip: if you can't help a customer right away--but they're clearly looking to be helped--apologize for the delay and assure them that they'll be helped asap. This is not complicated. In another lifetime I worked in the restaurant business for more than a decade. I hired and trained many people, and I have to say, dear owners--I'd fire about a third of your employees right now if I could.) It doesn't matter if there's a huge line (rare) or if the place is basically empty; the service will be slow or non-existent regardless. I've also ordered a half-dozen to-go bagels and then later discovered that there were only five bagels in my bag. This has happened twice. Really. (Aside to the multiple perps: I'm guessing from your general affect that you smoke A LOT of weed, but seriously--you can't count to six?) I've averaged one Bagelry visit per week, going back to 2001, and the service is awful 70% of the time; passable 20% of the time; and genuinely pleasant and competent 10% of the time. Also, what's the point of an "express" counter when the service over there is just as slow and inattentive as the service at the regular counter? And why do you leave the sign up on the regular counter side inviting customers to the express side if the latter is actually NOT OPEN? That is, the hours of operation for the express side (10-1, I believe) are not posted on the sign placed on the top of the case on the regular counter side. Have the people running this place never been to a busy deli in an actual city? Say, NYC, Chicago, or Boston? Those places typically have counter staff who *only* take customer orders. They do not stand directly in front of the customers while conspicuously and interminably ignoring them. This arrangement has worked for decades at such establishments. 2. The product. To be fair, the bagels are OK. And this just compounds the tragedy of the lousy, clueless service. (The coffee, however, just tastes like hot brown water. But then Avelino is right down the street.) Sometimes a few of my "fresh" bagels are in fact rock hard, like "I could throw this through a window" rock hard. These botched products probably should have been culled during production. Finally, I grudgingly patronize this establishment about once a week--but only because I have no choice. There is no other bagel shop in town, which brings me back to my original point. Bellingham has a handful of crappy restaurants (and other businesses) that only survive because they have no competition or because residual consumer expectations are low. But this will not be the case forever. Bellingham has changed a lot in the last few years, and for better or worse it's a more affluent place now. (Note all the prestige cars rolling through town these days; and the increasingly insane home prices; and the Whole Foods; and the hordes of mobile tech workers who moved here *just* to recreate; and the $29.00 per pound deli meats at Haggen; and . . . ) These demographic shifts mean corresponding shifts in consumer preferences, and in default expectations regarding the quality of both services and products. It's just a matter of time before somebody new comes to town and does it better. Plenty of places seem well-established--until they're not. read more

The bagels here were great! I had a boring buttered wheat bagel, but it was still delicious. Coffee was average for the midwest. Not top tier shit. The eggs were great. Our sandwich was really good too. We got a couple of muffins. The blueberry muffin was very good, not overly sweet like many muffins can be. As a Brooklyn born boy, I can safely say that these are the bagels and bialys of my youth. I have been able to depend on the consistent quality and taste of Bagelry products since they first opened. I like that they have largely resisted the softer bready bagels so many other places refer to as bagels, but which are not. The bialys are perfection. They have stayed true to their roots and the product is still better than anything I can find between Seattle and the border. My preferences are bialys and pumpernickel bagels. read more

The Bagelry is one of those mainstays that make Bellingham so Bellingham. Can't believe it's taken me so long to write a Yelp review - I've lost count on the number of times it's been my downtown destination. (Conservatively twice a month for 23 years...yes, lots). After getting delicious bagels this morning I decided I must share why you should visit here too. This morning I stood in a short but upbeat line of people ordering their favorites at the counter. A season special of rosemary salt bagels with garlic scallion cream cheese was irresistible so I ordered that for myself while choosing a few everything bagels with Italian cream cheese for the family. The server was friendly and polite, even rushing my coffee out so I could enjoy it during the short wait for my food. As I waited for my bagels I read the community bulletin board to discover several upcoming events that I hadn't seen anywhere else. It's always an eclectic mix of patrons and a cheerful chatty atmosphere. Today like always I received my food quickly and it tasted great. Always hits the spot. Over the years I've worked my way through the many varieties of bagels and cream cheeses. One of many favorites is the lox on a salt bagel. read more

Excellent product and the staff is friendly. The ambience is just what a bagel shop should look like. The negative issue though is in the logistics of ordering a bagel. It is usually congested and clogged. First- timers never know where to start. You have to go to the back of the restaurant to place your order then come back to the front to pay. Often the line back there is long and people's butts extend over the tables of diners -- not appetizing. Move those tables toward the front or get rid of them. Why not reverse the process and place orders, and pay at the front when you walk in. Give them your name, have seat and wait. Also, the counter on the other side is becoming an unsightly catch-all and a work station. Get rid of those useless sneeze guards, make that a "lunch counter," and add five or six short-legged barstools. Put a gregarious college student over there taking orders. That would be a fun place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. read more

To be honest, quality has suffered over the years, likely to various new owners. Sometimes your bagel is loaded and on others there is quite literally 6 pieces of onion, or whatever you picked. As for the bagel sandwiches, they are ok but not what they once were. I asked for mayo and mustard and received exactly 0.002 grams of each on my bagel sandwich. Inconsistencies in general. As for the staff, it seems that if you don't have any of the following: facial piercings, tattoos, dreadlocks, a dog, a rainbow patch on sweatshirt, Dansko shoes, a Subaru, a beanie on your head, or are under the apparent age of 24, you are treated like some conservative, right leaving bigot. Maybe I am wrong but it's that kind of hipster, popular attitude that now pervades the place. I didn't feel welcome, didn't feel part of the cool kids club and the food kinda now sucks to boot. Don't know if I'll be back after nearly 18 years of coming here. Hey Bagelry staff, get over yourselves and drop the tude. Your not that cool. I can't believe that I haven't reviewed The Bagelry yet. They are such a Bellingham staple. If you are in a rush and want a quick, yummy, and reasonably priced carb load this is the place to go. I have so far mostly gone in and ordered bagels to go so I can take and share with others. They always seem to have a line at the cash register but plenty of seating. I have been obsessed with the rosemary salt bagel this summer. The onion and everything bagel are pretty good too. They definitely accomodate the standard bagel and coffee. They also have omelettes if someone wants a more standard breakfast fair. They have a deli that has a lot of appealing lunch options that I want to try sometime in the future too. read more

The bagels are Great! But man is it a chore to get out with 3 bagels. They have an Express area just for bagels and coffee. I came in for 3 bagels, told it will be a few minutes, I need to make some coffees for the other servers customers. I responded 3 bagels will take a few seconds. Worth the wait but do not understand why staff cannot prioritize time, literally took 20 seconds to get and pay for my bagels after the coffee wait. read more

Great place for a sandwich. Had the egg salad bagel sandwich. Their egg salad was great I hate it when there is more onion or celery then egg, but the Bagerly had the perfect ratio. The staff was a 5/5 they were beyond helpful. If I had to complain about anything it would be two things. 1. Don't take cards 2. To many options. They had too many menus. One was just for bagels. one had 10-12 different cream cheeses. Then if you decide you want to make it a sandwich you have an overwhelming choice of meats So if you don't know what you it could take a while to order. read more

Pros: -The bagels are fine. Honestly, that's it. I don't understand the excitement about them. -The location is fine. I like downtown Bellingham. Cons: -The service... meh. The few times I've been there, the servers - while always kind - get freaked out by a line. I want to say, "Folks, don't panic. We're all fine," but they do anyway. -I'd heard rumors the owner was a jerk, and then I got to experience it! The tale: Two pals and I strolled into the Bagelry for a treat. Two of us tried to order a drink, but the employee (a newbie, I believe) wasn't sure how to make them. The folks training him were in panic "don't pay attention to anything but slicing this bagel" mode and didn't/couldn't take the time to teach him. "No biggie," I thought, "I'll get my food and grab the drink somewhere else." So, friends and I get a table outside, and then two of us head four doors down to get a drink where they know how to steam milk. We tip, grab our drinks, and head back to where our friend was bagel-sitting for us. After about ten minutes of eating, sipping, and recounting the previous night's adventures, a middle-aged dude walks and out says (in the tone of a sassy 19-year-old), "Could you not do that?" We look at each other confused. "Move the chair to this table? Sorry...." we venture. "No, bring other drinks here. We serve great coffee." he responded. Grumpy Gills like whoa. "Oh, sorry! We actually tried to order them here, but the guy didn't know how to make a latte," my friend answered with her special-ed teacher patience. "Come on, we know how to make drinks." Seriously! He said that! He didn't respect that the customer is always right! And then he continued with his jackassery for a moment and went back inside, only to chew out another customer for walking in with a Starbucks Frappuccino. (Bagelry, do you even make those? Why The Face?) In sum, the food is fine until it's topped with a schmear of d'bag. I've heard nothing but negative things about the owner from all who have worked with/for him, and I have no problem boycotting them just to cut his profits a teensy weensy bit. Most of the the negative reviews complain about service but give 3 stars because the bagels are good. But being treated like an idiot is more disappointing than having a mediocre bagel. And the subtle rudeness employed in this place is pretty epic; you'll leave wondering if you are being overly sensitive or if (could this really be the case in a friendly town?) everyone in there was actually, in fact, rude. And having decide the latter you'll feel like a dick yourself for taking such a negative slant on interactions that could probably be interpreted two ways. So this is a crazy making bagel shop. Luckily there are yelp reviews, which I didn't read before going in, and they quickly confirm that this place is rude, and it appears it stems from the core (an egotistical and pretension owner, sounds like). And then there is my wife, who grew up here, and says, "oh yeah, I forgot to warn you that they aren't very nice there." It happens that I've worked at a place like this--poor/confusing restaurant layout, a hard working and sharp staff with high quality food, an in-group of patrons who appreciate the snob attitude as they believe they are in on it--and I've seen from the other side how easy it is to slide into the habitual passive aggression and underhanded rudeness when your shitty restaurant layout and pretentious policies continually cause patrons confusion. And since I know how much real contempt employees of such establishments have for their patrons (some odd displacement of the hatred they have for their super-hip dead end jobs) I can't bear to give this place more than one star. And it's 2013; the average homeless person has a square reader and can take a debit payment. read more

The food is fine -- some of it is even quite good. I enjoy the breakfast omelets, and the biali with Italian spread is pretty tasty. The sandwiches aren't bad. My husband is in love with their pasta salad. I could take it or leave it. The bagels are pretty lackluster. The prices are kinda high for what you get, especially if you want to add cheese to a sandwich. A dollar fifty-ish for cheese on a five-dollar or six-dollar sandwich is pretty ridiculous. They also refuse to toast the bagels. And they're a cash-only place. They do have a cash machine inside, but you'll get charged the usual fees for using it. A place their size being cash-only is an outdated pain in the a**. That's not to mention the fact that almost every time we've ever gone there, the servers have been either pretty rude or pretty inept. I know others have had some bad experiences too, in that regard. On the whole, I don't think going here is worth it. There are better places to go for the money, and I don't want to reward this place with my business. read more

They have a toaster now, so people can stop complaining about not being able to toast their bagel. I never minded the no-toasting, the bagels were fresh so with cream cheese they were tasty. Similar to other bagel shops, it's over priced, but the bagels and sandwiches are yummy. Cash only, hopefully they change that soon. They recently did a renovation, which doesn't really make sense to me. People have to order their bagel first, the person writes down what they're getting and gives them a receipt, which you bring to the cashier. That's how it's always been, but they renovated the space so now you have to go to the back of the bagel shop to order, and then come back to the front to pay... people new to the place get confused and everyone is just walking into each other. Poor planning on their part. They need to put in a blinking neon sign in the back that says "Order back here!" and then a sign above the cashier that says "Don't order here, go to the back!" read more

Honestly, my favorite item from The Bagelry is their spreads. I go in there just for the spreads alone. The bagels are nothing to write home about. Sorry, I've had better. Service is consistently good which I find very important. Prices are ok, slightly overpriced... profits are definitely not used to pay their employees or on cleaning supplies because it's pretty dirty in there. The Bagelry is busy during the lunch rush but they are always well-staffed that the line moves at a steady pace. They have a convenient ATM for those losers who can't pay cash for a bagel and spread. You know, I would give four stars except there is just no wow factor and the star of the show, the bagel, isn't truly as fantastic as some people say (they all probably grew up in this town). read more

Much like Matt M. I grew up eating bagels from this establishment. I use to buy them by the bag full and eat them through the week. As a starving college student it made for a cheap and delicious meal. Last time I was here it looked like they doubled the size of the store and had two lines, one for just bagels and one for dinning in the store. That seemed to have spend the line up which is a welcome change from the past where you could sometimes wait 15 minutes to get your order taken. A great crowd also frequents this place with a mixture of high school and college student, downtown workers and out of work alcoholics that seem to gravitate towards Railroad Ave. It makes for great people watching opportunities. read more

I've lived in Bellingham nearly all of my life, and have been coming to the Bagelry since the day they opened. Many things have changed in those decades, but the Bagely deserves kudos for the consistency of their product love the years. I used to work just down the street at a place called the Video Depot. Long time Bellinghamsters may remember that we once gave away a Corvette in a raffle, with the only requirement that you be present to win. Over 10,000 people jammed the streets for the drawing, which just happened to take place the month that the Bagelry went into business. The Bagelry owner came to the store the next morning with a giant grocery sack, filled with bagels, cream cheese, and lox, saying that more people had discovered his business because of that event than he could have created from a million dollars in advertising. They've never looked back. My New York friends never stop griping about the pizza that they can't get unless they go home, but more than one of them have confided in me that the boiled bagels at the Bagelry were every bit as good as the ones they get back home. Gripes? Quite few, actually. They don't take plastic (but donate their ATM fees to charity), they didn't used to toast their bagels (which they've since acquiesced, and bowed to the people who love their bagels toasted), and it can get a bit pricy to take the whole family here for breakfast. But as they claim in their Yelp statement, the Bagelry is a luxury that you can afford! read more

I heard this place had great bagels and they don't toast them. So, I thought they must be great because any great bagel shop knows that toasting them defeats the purpose of freshness. However, to have no ham, sausage or bacon during breakfast is nuts!! I ordered a bagel with eggs and asked for ham, cheese and egg on that bagel. First, I don't understand the complaints about service. The staff here has always been friendly and accommodating on anything I've asked. Want bagels with small holes, they'll oblige. Need them packed for a long trip back home, no problem. Second, the bagels: I'm a New York transplant and know a good NY-style bagel when I taste one. With the possible exception of a couple of places in LA and the SF Bay area (Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels - are you still there?) the Bagelry's are as good as you're going to find west of the Hudson. Good crust, the right chewy density and that slightly yeasty taste and aroma. I was not surprised at all the learn that the owner is also a NY transplant.
