We stopped by The Backyard for lunch after going off-roading on LaTrobe and Michigan Bar. The places is pretty spacious where you have an area for the bar and some tables to sit, then you have a dining area where you can sit and dine, and then there is the outdoor dining area with a few tables and a human size connect 4 game. My kids enjoyed the connect 4. Ordered the tri-tip sandwich with fries and it was pretty good. The trip tip but chopped into pieces so my husband thought I had ordered pull pork lol. So don't expect the tri-tip to be in strips. Hubs ordered a hamburger but I forgot which one. Either it was super delicious or he was hungry because I think I only saw the burger for maybe 5 minutes. The kids shared an order of chicken quesadilla and tater tots. My kids didn't care of the quesadilla but maybe they just were not that hungry. The did eat the tater tots and our friend. My friend's son ended up ordering a baby back rib and the portion size was good. I have been to this restaurant three times now. Every time I've had horrible service. They have ran out of food each time I have gone. How do you run out of bacon and tri-tip. Another time I ordered three take home meals. They completely forgot one of my entrees. Then they said they would comp an entree for their mistake. I go back 2 days later and the same bartender acted like he knew nothing about. This last time we went with three of our friends. It took the waiter 10 mins to come take our drink and appetizers. We ordered food even thought they were out of some of their barbecue food. And then they wouldn't even substitute for the missing food. For god sakes there is a grocery store right across the street. Our friend's dinners came out and still no appetizers. 30 mins later they brought out our three dinners and the appetizers. Now mind you we had to wait 30 mins for the table, 30 minutes for the waiter to take our order, and then 30 more mins to get our food, after our friend had finished eating. We weren't even hungry anymore. Avoid this restaurant, there are better barbecue places out there. read more

I work across the street from this place and of course I had to give it a try! I ordered the West Coast philly, and the sandwich was so good! It left me speechless and I ate it in less then 5 mins. That's how good it was! The ferries were also really good too, crispy is my favorite. The chocolate temptation cake... tasteless... It did not taste good at all. I personally love the 'Buffalo Chicken Salad' and the 'Backyard Burger'. The service is great. I specifically like sitting at the bar and hanging out with the bartenders. This is THE restaurant in Rancho Murieta. Ok, there is technically a mexican place, a pizza place, and a Burger King but this is the only American restaurant! They have 5 TVs strewn about this bar/restaurant with a cozy local vibe. We were able to be seated quickly, had amazingly friendly and rapid service. The wings came with several sauce options: Buffalo / BBQ / Teriyaki / Chipotle Lime / Sweet Chili / Dry Rub. I was satisfied with our BBQ wings as there were youth at our table that weren't comfortable with spice. :) The South of the Border burger was pretty good. Lettuce, tomato, Pepper Jack cheese, jalapenos, bacon, crispy onions, and chipotle ranch dressing. Half pound patty of 80/20 Certified Angus Beef on a toasted brioche bun. Served with choice of side. I got the chili with all the fixins and it was pretty decent but I'm spoiled by my wife's chili. The burger itself was missing some spice and was a touch overcooked. I wasn't disappointed in the food but I wasn't blown away either. I think the ambiance and amazing staff make this a location that I could see myself coming back to. read more

Some experiences were great and others left me questioning why I even bother coming back. Then I remember it's convenient location to my home. The Backyard is a great little barbecue and burger joint on the outskirts of our own figurative backyard, and well worth a visit if you're in the area. My hungry group stopped in after visiting a local pumpkin patch and were all impressed by the variety of comfort food eats and good service. Because it is the time of coronavirus, we had to sit spaced over a couple tables on the patio, the patio proved spacious and they even had a TV conveniently located so we could catch the game. There were some local beers on tap from the amazing Amador Brewing Co. And we started out with drinks. For starters, we went with a couple varieties of the chicken wings. I didn't find much exciting about the house rub, but the traditional buffalo with ranch sauce was delicious and the wings were plump and juicy. My entree, the buffalo chicken burger, was not a piece of fried chicken as I expected but sliced roasted chicken drizzled in sauce. This is not a criticism, however, as every bit was scrumptious. The fries were crispy and fresh as well. There's something for everyone here and the menu is well- balanced. I'd happily eat here again next time we pass through tiny Rancho Murieta! read more

Local American comfort food. I come here anytime I have a burger craving. I love their Western Burger with a side of onion rings. The burger is much larger than appears in my pictures.. I usually eat it open faced (w/out the top bun) as it is just too much for me. The bacon is thick cut and has a great flavor while the onion rings have always been fresh and crisped to my liking. I do order a side of bbq as I like every bite packed with flavor and varied texture. The sweetness contrasts well with the crunch and vinegar of the pickles to the subtle savory of the patty. I also ALWAYS order the loaded tots with chili cheese and an additional side of chili. I'm not sure what it is about their chili but I really enjoy this here over anywhere else I've had it. I like cultured and hearty food. This one has chunks of their smoked meats in it and it just does it for me. Especially loaded on crispy hot tots. Note: This is a huge platter, definitely not one you can take on alone. Perfect as a starter but may fill you up. Great for 4 people. The Asian chicken salad is also great and is a large serving size. The times I've ordered it, I've brought half of it home to eat later.. we all know salad digests quickly so don't judge me. You can order the chicken grilled or crispy, both great. They have karaoke nights which I've only been to once.. fair warning everyone sings great. But i particularly enjoy Thursday night Trivia Nights. The atmosphere is mellow, fun, engaging.. they have excellent drinks. It does get really busy though so if you plan on this night early arrival is suggested. My group shows up just after 5, dines, has a beer, enjoys conversation.. then around 7pm "LET THE GAMES BEGIN." It's typically a 30's + crowd.. definitely a locals restaurant / bar but that includes surrounding towns. Good vibes for sure. The service is a hit and miss.. I have noticed when really busy, they see past people at the door so you may have to gain their attention but I haven't ever had to wait for more than a couple of minutes before someone checked in. I have experienced needing something and my waitress was no where to be seen but I don't let small things bother me so I just ask someone else and they're nice about getting it to me. It's never felt personal and also never when they aren't slammed. The milkshake as you can see, is very chocolaty, sugar packed.. not my cup of tea, I'm not a sweets person but my daughter ordered that so I wanted to show what it would look like if you did. She did say it was really sweet but good if you like that sort of thing. I haven't tried all of their food, mostly what I've shown here and I do know all of their meats are smoked and popular.. brisket, pulled pork, ribs.. just haven't ordered them as a dish in themselves. Overall, depending on your preferences of service and food it can be a hit and miss but like every other place you go to, they're going to have their specialties.. here it's drinks, local ambiance, smoked meats, burgers and of course some of the sides. The girls that work here are just too much, had to wait an ungodly amount of time. When I ask for a refund, she totally had a attitude for absolutely no reason. I just have a doctors appointment that I have to go to. I hate that I have to write a bad review, but the girls are just so not nice. I'm trying to put away. I totally don't trust that. They didn't do something to it. They were that awful. When I looked at the order is completely not what I ordered at all I end up with tater tots and a chicken salad for almost $40 can't eat it I don't trust them and I paid for this super upset not even close to what I ordered. There is always some drama unfolding with the help and, that said, the food is always awesome and the service excellent. It's a fun place.

We have eaten here several times and about a year ago it was really good the food was really good and service was really good and it just has gone downhill lately. We ate there tonight to find the menu had changed again and this time the children's hamburger used to be two slider hamburgers with french fries and now it's one slider ......one slider hamburger and some fries. Are you kidding me? And we ordered some appetizers and they completely didn't bring one of them and didn't even mention that they had forgotten it. Thankfully they didn't charge me for it but they didn't even realize they didn't bring it. Plus it was so hot in there again. I asked about the air conditioning because several people were asking why it was so hot and they said it had a leak. It was like an oven in there it was 100° outside and it was so hot in there and I told them their fans are not blowing any air they must be sucking air up not blowing it down and the guys in there just didn't even understand that the fan could blow two different directions. I'm like how do you not know this? And we had to wait such a long time for our food and for refills on water. Not what you want when you're overheated. Needless to say we didn't have a fan we didn't have anything and then when the server brought my change he brought back big bills as if he expected me to give him a big tip. Now my daughter is a server and they always give me lots of change so that me the customer gets to choose whether or not I want to tip this person a lot or a little. Usually if they bring me a lot of little bills I make sure to give them the bigger bill because they didn't just assume they were getting a big tip. Unfortunately, my husband and I decided we won't be coming back there's just too many things that are not like they used to be and not in a good way wish we could have been more positive. read more

Fantastic! So great that this little gem is right down the street from us. Definitely better than the Burger King across the street haha. From libations, to great bbq, to live music (which I have yet to check out) this place seems to be doing all the right stuff. I have yet to have a "wow" experience there, but then again only few places deliver that. All in all they are nice, polite and get the job done. Is this a 5 star spot? Well maybe for some. My aunt and husband drove out to have lunch with me today on my lunch break. I have been enjoying a lot of my lunches here lately and wanted to treat them to a staple of Rancho Murieta. Dave sat us and as always he asked us about or day and our plans for the holidays. My husband was the most interested in the virtual poker at the table and it was fun to watch his status up on the big screen. Our server was quick and kept our drinks filled.
