Such a perfect place!! So happy we came off route 1 to have lunch here. The decor is so cute, there's a little bar with a great wine list and beers on tap. Theres also an outside courtyard for dining in the sun on a nice day. We got sandwiches: the garden box and a blackened chicken sandwich. Both were amazing. The sweet potato waffle fries are maybe the best we've ever tasted! The bakery boasted a great selection of cookies and muffins, we got some to go, and those did not disappoint either. So it is our first time vacationing in the area and were getting frustrated by the lack of high quality, healthy food around Milton, DE. We heard from a few locals about this place and tried it for breakfast. The food, coffee, menu options are fantastic. We have gone there for dinner too. Let's start with the experience- super friendly staff, very clean restaurant and relaxing environment. For breakfast. Our family tried the muffins, two different omelets and the pancakes. Everything was top notch. We returned the next day for dinner and all of us had another set of Amazing meals. We tried calamari, garlic bread, bean soup for appetizers- all delicious. For dinner we had shrimp salad, steak & cheese sandwich, Mac & cheese and a burger. Can't believe it but everything was absolutely delicious. I rarely give 5 stars out but this place is seriously one of the best. Not many places around here have healthy food on the menu (from asparagus to quinoa). I would return again and again. read more

My sister's kids always ask to go The Backyard. They take a ball or frisbee to play with in the backyard, while the grownups drink wine and chat at the patio tables. The food is great. The Backyard has the best key lime pie outside of the Florida Keys. The grilled chicken quesadilla has so much flavor that 1/2 makes a satisfying meal. The avocado fries, the sweet potato fries with Sriracha, and the calamari are all terrific appetizers. The chicken salad with tarragon is excellent as is the egg salad. Great place in Milton! We ate here twice over our vacation, once for breakfast and once for lunch. Both times we were very pleased with our meal. For breakfast I had the "Farmer's Wife" and my husband had a pork roll omelette with cheese and grits. We both loved what we ate. For lunch we started with the crab fries. Do yourself a favor and order the crab fries! Boardwalk style French fries, seasoned with Old Bay, drizzled with cheese and topped with a generous portion of lump crab. Amazing! I had the vegetable flatbread for an entree and my husband had a burger. Both were very tasty. I came here with a group of six on a Tuesday night which happened to be fries-night! We ordered avocado fries that came with a sriracha aioli and an order of the french fries on the fries-night menu that came with pulled meat and cheese. The avocado fries were lightly breaded and served slightly hot with a dipping bowl for the aioli. The avocado fries were eaten just as quickly as they were brought out! Our table loved them. The fries were brought out shortly after we finished the avocado fries in a large bowl, and they were equally delicious. Our server was great and really friendly. read more

Particularly at lunch that is exactly what you get at Backyard. Panini sandwiches are a specialty here which I always enjoy. They do have good beer and decent wines. Service is always friendly and prompt - even the coffee is good and fresh. walking in I was pleasantly surprised by the look and feel of the restaurant. this restaurant is a hidden gem for the area. they have a great take on original dishes with a hint of a new progressive twist. I ordered the chicken burger with bacon jam. the bun was a good brioche bun. the cheese was cooked perfectly, barely able to stay in the burger because of how oozie it was. the bacon jam was a perfect complement to the richness of the cheese. I was a bit hesitant at first about the bacon jam but after eating it, it was perfectly savory from the bacon and perfectly sweet from the Jam. the only critique I have was that the chicken was a bit dry but had a great charcoal flavor. also they had avocado fries with an excellent sriracha based sauce. read more

Zoomed in here for a quick lunch with the kids on our way back home and was so happy we did...cute place with great fresh food. There are a few vegetarian options which was nice as well. I recommend the jicama slaw as a side. Delicious! Yummy baked goods and ice coffee for the road kept everyone happy for the drive. I so badly want to give this place a better review as it has so much potential, but the service ruins it for me. Coincidentally went for dinner two nights in a row, the first night being my first time, and the service disappointed both times. The first night we waited to be seated for longer than necessary considering the hostess/waitress was busy doing something at the register directly in front of us. Not a big deal, but a simple acknowledgment or warmer welcome would've gone a long way. Second night, our waitress was extremely negligent to the point the manager and much younger staff member assisted us more than our own waitress! Both nights I felt the waitresses were disinterested in working and they both lacked personality. The food and atmosphere are both worth checking out, and from reading other reviews there is some positive said about staff. Unfortunately, my company and I were not impressed by the staff and as an avid restauranteer (new word alert!) - I do value service combined with food quality and atmosphere. There are many other options for eating out and when you're spending your hard earned money on doing so certain expectations should be met. read more

We sampled each one offered, and while they seem ordinary ( chocolate chip, sugar, etc...) they are anything but. This is a great place. We ended up here after being jilted by the long wait for Dogfish Head Brewery tour. The one hour drive from our vacation house was worth it just for this lunch. Prices were fair and the kids menu, while short, should please most young ones. I ordered the Goat (salami, goat cheese, spinach and balsamic on ciabatta) and split the beet salad. Both were ace dishes. Their homemade pickles are divine. The table split some avocado fries, perfectly cooked so that it seemed there was no oil in them. What a revelation with the Sriracha aioli. My kid had the Mac and cheese but filled up on the perfect French fries, so I even finished her Mac, which tasted like it had a homemade be hazel sauce on it... Amazing. With 13 in our party crashing the joint at the height of lunch hour, they gracefully prepped a table in a private room in five minutes, and dispatched two servers promptly, treating us like royalty. I doubt you can find a bad dish here. We left with chocolate covered macaroons for the ride. I don't really like coconut but holy cow they were delicious! Please go here. read more

Great food, great coffee, service was ok. Had the shrimp and grits and a delicious sandwich with mad and cheese and pulled pork. The sandwich was great, especially the warm buttery texas toast it was on. The shrimp and grits were cooked perfectly. The coffee was from a roaster in Lewes and was delicious. The decor was nice too. Had a rustic contemporary look which i enjoy. Also had picnic seating outside in the backyard. The service was just ok but that was fine. This place seemed more like a dinner so we weren't expecting exceptional service, but the food did take a while considering it was only halfway full. Had this a bunch more times. Ordered food for pick-up, drove 20 minutes to get it--making the order was painful, first they told us they could not put condiments on our burgers OR provide it on the side (so we were supposed to just use our own at our house? Why?), then they said they COULD and we had to repeat what condiments went on which burgers over and over. Once we got the food back, half the burgers were either missing the condiments or had the wrong shit on them. Seriously? You can't put the right condiments on $10 burgers that don't even come with fries or a side? Came back for breakfast recently, got the gouda grits again hoping my one experience was a fluke (where the grits were super dry and gobby, not creamy/soupy the way grits should be) and once again they were dry and hard. My aunt--the biggest Backyard raver--was even "meh" about HER breakfast, and said she thinks she's finally done with Backyard..the cookies are still where it's at but that's about it. read more
