The Salty…read moreDog has an unmatched ambience, certainly unmatched in Bangor, and the cuisine is as good as you get any where in NI. They pride themselves on local fresh produce and this translates to their menu which is full of seafood (it's on the coast). The staff in the Salty Dog are exceptional, they have excellent knowledge of the menu and the wine lists. Don't make the mistake of asking for a white wine because they have loads and it will only expose your lack of wine knowledge as it did on my case. It seems that other reviewers have had mixed experiences of The Salty Dog but every time I've been in I have throughly enjoyed myself and my grub. I am heading back again soon - so it's 4 stars for now and they might get the coveted fifth if the latest experience matches the previous ones.

The restaurant itself is very well decorated, very glamorous and luxurious. Not what you would expect from the bar area. A new menu had commenced that day , so the waitress seemed a little unsure on some of the dishes but I think it slightly harsh to critique on that. The new menu had a great selection - I opted for the salt and pepper burger. Great portion sizes, really well presented and most importantly tasted great. 5* so far! My only let down was the dessert. I prefer a more indulgent selection, but that's personal choice. I settled on the lemon posset with mango and passionfruit sorbet. The sorbet was good but the posset was a lot more runny that I would have liked and my husband agreed. It had popping candy on top, which I thought might be nice but it felt like they just threw it on trying to be different. Didn't really work for me. Overall though I would give this place a 4*, being the first night perhaps the posset has since been perfected. I wouldn't say no for a rejudge.

I was actually lured in here yesterday by a sandwich board outside saying 'Buy one get one half price on Burgers' but to my disappointment that deal only starts after 6pm - so don't get caught out. Once inside I didn't want to be 'That guy' who leaves once he finds out a deal isn't available - no one likes 'that guy'. So I stayed and I'm glad I did. The lunch menu isn't too expansive - it consists of a few starters, mussels, wings and chowder and for mains you can pick from 7 pub favourites like fish and chips or burgers. Having convinced my wee brain I was getting a burger before I walked in I went for a Mexican burger - it was priced at £12 which I initially thought was quite steep but once it came out I realised it was well worth the money. The burger was cooked to perfection (we were asked how we'd like it cooked - I opted for pink) and it was topped with spicy beef chili and huge chunks of chorizo - nice and sloppy and full of flavour. It was accompanied by potato cut chips, you know the type that have the skin still on one side for added authenticity. Can't fault the food at all and the staff are excellent - we were seated promptly, offered drinks and our orders were taken as soon as we were ready. A really great lunchtime destination. 5 Stars for food!

Prices are ok too. The place has got a nice homely old world type of ambience. Locally this place is known as Ownies and I have heard stories of a bad crowd at night ,especially the weekends! It is fine at lunch time and, as far as my experience goes, in the early evening.

I'm extremely surprised at the less than stellar reviews this bar has received so far…read more I have been coming here ever since I was old enough, and absolutely love it. Contrary to what has been said, I feel 100% safe in this bar, and unlike a lot of other places that can get a bit rowdy, I have never seen anything untoward in this bar whatsoever. Anyway, the Joymount Arms, or Ownies, as it is locally known, is pretty much one of the liveliest most popular bars in the town. They have had a refurb quite recently, and there is loads of space for everyone (my only complaint previously was that, owing to its popularity, it got so packed and it was hard to move!) They have two bars downstairs, and a further bar upstairs with a function room and balcony. They have a huge, covered smoking area with widescreen TV's outside, and lots of heaters, so even in the middle of the winter, you won't get cold! They have lots of live music, promotion nights, quiz nights, you name it. You will definitely have a great time here. Anyone who does not like this place must have a screw loose!

First up was a bit of dinner, and this was undoubtedly going to be a good one. Molly Brown's run this 2 courses for £10 offer from 12-9pm Monday to Thursday, and from 12-6pm on Friday and Saturday, which is really very good value for money. There's a huge variety too and definitely something for everyone - from garlic bread starters to roast stuffed pepper mains. I chose the bread and oils starter, which down an absolute treat (including down my top, which didn't go down quite so well...), and for the mains I had a burger which wasn't half a bad 'un. So far so good. We happened to be there on a Thursday night (incidentally, as Geraldine mentioned, quiz night), so we weren't going anywhere any time soon. Between the meal and quiz, we got some drinks (Strawberry Daiquiris were all the rage) and had a bit of craic. Speaking of the daiquiris, I got a lesson in making one from the exceptionally friendly barman. Excellent. The quiz man (who's an absolute hoot) did arrive a good bit late, but we were all so pumped for the quiz (ok, I was), that we didn't mind too much. Throughout all the rounds our team were in second place until the very last round. As Mr Quizmaster announced the scores, we listened for our name and realised we'd come top...with another team! Oooh, the drama. One last tiebreak question, and the first prize was ours. Well, you should have heard the cheers, and the singing along to "We are the Champions"...yes, an exceptionally good night indeed.

On a Thursday night you can drop in for quiz night with the very entertaining quiz host and his half time nibbles...free and yummy! if you win you will receive anything from a bottle of wine to a 24 pack of beers (i know this because our team have won now a few times and we are not geniuses nor do we use our phones!!) They have a long list of cocktails as well as your standard man refreshments - beer! I heart Molly's because they run fantastic little offers every now and again. Sex and the City 2 premier night had a free cocktail, tickets and a bus to the cinema and back for a cheap as chips price! Trips to Down Royal racecourse are also run through the bar - the classic a pint and a bet. Kelvin, the manager, will happily whip you out 'a steak on a stone' from the kitchen while you look at the lovely paintings of local areas by local artists. Seriously, I could go on and on about this place...the food is really good with a starter and a main for a tenner. They even hosted my fiances 30th birthday party for no charge and allowed me to decorate the whole place with pictures of him in his nappy! So accommodating, affordable, friendly and I swear i'm not even getting paid to write this but I am going to print off a copy and take it in and try to get a free cocktail out of it!
