Stayed at Ojo Caliente for 3 nights. Out of sheer convenience, of course I ate here a few times; three, to be exact.
First meal, dinner- I wasn't sure if reservations were neccessary, so I made one just in case. Was it neccessary? Yes and no. For a dining room table, reservation is "highly recommended", so pretty much required for dinner. The bar area, however, is open seating, first come, first served. Both areas are fairly small with limited seating, and seemed to be pretty full for the later end of the dinner rush. I believe we were seated at the last open table when we arrived and the bar was completely full; although, it seemed to start clearing out relatively quickly. I assume that was because most of the patrons were, in general, of a much more advanced age than myself, and it must've been getting close to bed time. Irrelevant. For the table, they bring out blue corn muffins and butter. Had to request a second bowl. They were good. For an app I got the stuffed grape leaves and olives. I was expecting rolled grape leaves stuffed with some sort of rice and cheese mixture. Instead, not to my disappointment, I was presented with a grape leaf bowl of sorts filled with a creamy, herb-y goat cheese with grilled sour dough and un-pitted olives on the side. (Yum- Goat cheese is ma fave!) Next course! My husband ordered the elk burger: smoked Gouda, sunny side up egg, tobacco onions,
duck bacon, Truffle fries with parmesan and parsley. I wasn't a fan of the burger. I'd never had elk before; idk how else to describe it other than "super meaty" tasting. Like.. overpoweringly so. And the burger needed something saucy (spoiler alert, here comes a nerdy pun: practice safe eating, always use condiments) A BBQ sauce or aioli or something. The truffle fries were great though. Now me. Spaghetti is my thang, so I ordered the Pasta Pomodoro (plus grilled chicken): oven roasted roma tomato sauce, garlic, piñon nuts, chili flakes, Mascarpone cheese,
basil, parmesan & linguini pasta. I was a bit skeptical, because I said spaghetti is my thang, NOT linguini; however, much to my satisfaction, it turned out to be spaghetti noodles! Taste buds gave it the stamp of approval! I could've done without the chicken add on, and maybe instead had some more of that grilled sourdough I had with the app. I couldn't finish it all; took about half back to the room with me. Next course! Here comes the disappointment - warm apple crostada with vanilla ice cream. WARM. Right there in the title, right? It came out COLD. Gross. Caramel was straight burnt. Double gross. Verdict- App and Pasta! Yes. Everything else. Ehhh... and over priced fo sho.
Second meal, breakfast. Bar closed, dining room only. No reservations neccessary. Prickly pear mimosas! Woot! Yummm. Perfect refreshment after my morning yoga class. I'm not a huge breakfast food fan, so instead of a normal pancake/french toast/omlette type of plate I went with the Alder Wood Smoked Salmon with bagel, cream cheese, red onions (gross) & capers. No complaints. Verdict- yummmmm... but still over priced.
Third meal, dinner in the bar. Kept it simple, meat (pepperoni, duck bacon, and something else) and cheese pizza. No small/medium/large.. just one size to pick from. Medium-ish. Plenty for my husband and I to share with no leftovers. I'm picky about pizza. Thin crust ONLY. And not the floppy kind; the crispy, crunchy kind. This one was satisfying. Not great, but satisfying. A couple Santa Fe Brown beers to wash it down with, then on to dessert. Chocolate Pot De Creme with caramel sauce and sea salt and a few scoops of Häagen-Dazs ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, coffee- one scoop of each). The chocolate stuff was kind of just a cold chocolate pudding with a chocolate-y caramel layer on top and a dollop of whipped cream. The Caramel wasn't burnt this time, and it was my favorite part. Scooped it off and ate with the coffee ice cream. Verdict - decent meal, still over priced.
Overall verdict: I'm sure it's no surprise at this point that I feel it was all overpriced. But other than a couple hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop places down the road, it's the only restaurant around.. so i guess it's a convenience fee. Food varied between good and great.
