I looked around for a place that did children's art classes, not just something that did projects, but that taught the fundamentals of art to kiddos. Luckily, I found Art+ Academy and it has been great! I have a very happy kiddo now since she has her real art classes. Here's the scoop: 1. Small class sizes. They monitor how many kids are in each class to make sure the student to teacher ratio is always low. The kid's all learn from each other, as well as get a lot of individual guidance to help their skills develop. 2. Classes for kids are separated into small age groups to keep the learn levels on the same playing field. The classes range from 4-5, 5-7, 7-9, and 9-12. It's nice that 12 year olds don't have to be with the 5 year olds. Peer groups help everyone learn better and faster. 3. They also do teen and adult classes, so really anyone and every can take classes if they are interested in them. 4. The teachers, at least the ones I have met, seem to really care about the students. They offer help and guidance, but still let each student do their own artistic styles. They really want each person to believe in their own artistic abilities. 5. The price seems very reasonable for the quality of the classes. If you or know someone who is interested in art classes, I highly recommend Art + Academy.

The only negative thought I have is that you have to sign a waiver AFTER you pay (and there are no refunds, but you can reschedule). It would be nice to have the waiver beforehand to know exactly what you have to agree to in order to participate in the experience. The waiver was pretty standard (permission to use photos on social media, resin is sticky and can make a mess, etc), but I didn't like that I didn't know about the waiver and wasn't able to read it until we had paid. There is also not an OPT-OUT option for the permission to use photos, which is not okay with me, but since we had already paid, I was only going to object if pictures were taken. Luckily, there were no pics taken during our time, so it's a non issue, but it could be for some people. Overall, it's a great new art space!

There are a lot of class options (categorized by what painting you'll be doing) so there's good variety. We chose a very pretty painting which we did not have the foresight to realize would be pretty difficult to paint. Check-in was smooth and the studio is intimate; they also have all materials setup for you ahead of time including aprons. This is also a BYOB spot and many people had wine with them if that's the kind of twist you're looking for. Our instructor was very good during our class. She was genuinely passionate and patient with everyone, doing multiple stops and checks and reassuring us along the way that everything would be fine. This was more of an intermediate level painting that took a bit of skill and finesse so the patient attitude and slow pace was helpful in getting out paintings as close to the original as possible. The only downside to that was the activity ran well over the time we had scheduled for it (2 hours turned into 3-3.5 hours), which forced us to push back a dinner reservation we had made. That's not really a drawback if you have the time and want it to be perfect but for those maybe looking to do something after your painting then it's good to be aware of that. At the end of the event we were genuinely impressed by how well our paintings came out. The attention to detail and instruction make it so that anyone regardless of skill level can come in and put together a painting that would look good on the front of a fridge. They have many different classes and paintings to choose from and for the price it absolutely feels worth it to come back, which we will be doing soon.

This studio, run by Steve Dubov, has at least one of everything you might need for your sculpture explorations in clay, plaster, bronze, permastone, and beyond. And Steve is very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you've got. The people at the studio have a variety backgrounds, skill levels, goals, and aesthetics. But they are all laid back and love what they do. I've found this to be a very welcoming place. I especially recommend Steve's Sculpture 101 class series. His instruction isn't heavy handed and in each class you produce a small piece in just a few hours. An added bonus is that Armadillo Clay Supply is conveniently located few blocks away.

The sessions ran about three hours, which allowed for plenty of individual attention while still keeping the atmosphere engaging. She also gives clear guidance on what materials to bring. Students bring their own paints and brushes and she's helpful about recommending what to start with. Her studio is about a five-minute drive from Jerry's Artarama, which made picking up supplies easy. I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a thoughtful, structured, and encouraging art instructor.

I checked out Ghostpepper Glass during the Austin Art Studio Tour and really loved it. They have a…read morebeautiful gallery space with so many unique glass pieces for sale. It's the kind of place where you can slowly wander around and keep noticing new details in each piece. I never made it to their original location, but this new space is big and spacious, which makes it easy to take everything in. It feels open, welcoming, and thoughtfully laid out. After seeing everything, I'm definitely interested in coming back to try one of their workshops at some point. It seems like such a cool, hands-on experience.
