The most fun we've had doing art in a long time. Painting with a Twist is a fun, casual activity that fits into just about any occasion, whether it be a date night or just doing something with friends. There are a lot of class options (categorized by what painting you'll be doing) so there's good variety. We chose a very pretty painting which we did not have the foresight to realize would be pretty difficult to paint. Check-in was smooth and the studio is intimate; they also have all materials setup for you ahead of time including aprons. This is also a BYOB spot and many people had wine with them if that's the kind of twist you're looking for. Our instructor was very good during our class. She was genuinely passionate and patient with everyone, doing multiple stops and checks and reassuring us along the way that everything would be fine. This was more of an intermediate level painting that took a bit of skill and finesse so the patient attitude and slow pace was helpful in getting out paintings as close to the original as possible. The only downside to that was the activity ran well over the time we had scheduled for it (2 hours turned into 3-3.5 hours), which forced us to push back a dinner reservation we had made. That's not really a drawback if you have the time and want it to be perfect but for those maybe looking to do something after your painting then it's good to be aware of that. At the end of the event we were genuinely impressed by how well our paintings came out. The attention to detail and instruction make it so that anyone regardless of skill level can come in and put together a painting that would look good on the front of a fridge. They have many different classes and paintings to choose from and for the price it absolutely feels worth it to come back, which we will be doing soon. read more

Me and my boyfriend did a paint your pet portrait here and it was so much fun! The instructors were so helpful and they really were there to support us every step of the way. Painting can honestly be a little stressful so bringing a bottle of wine definitely helped. Overall I think the price of these events is super fair given the cost of the materials and the time spent by the instructors. I would definitely recommend this for a date night activity! read more

She made sure I knew what was in the kit, how to use it, and gave out tips and suggestions on the possibilities the two canvases could become. I was super excited about the picture we were going to paint! It was a cute Halloween picture with ghosts and pumpkins. The class was going great until... the teacher drew out our ghosts and pumpkins for us.. he took my canvas and I was not informed that he was going to draw out my ghosts and pumpkins on my canvas. They were not anything like I had wanted them to be. I wanted to change it BUT They were drawn with black pen so I was not able to cover them up.. from that point I hated my canvas and feel like my picture was ruined. It wasn't anything like I wanted it to be. I wish I could have drawn them myself and made it my own. I was not the only person in the class who was unhappy with that. We agreed it did not meet our expectations or look like the picture we wanted to create. I tried to change it the best I could but you can still see where he had drawn in his own picture with the pen. :( read more

I have been to a few of these bring your own wine painting type classes... so when I was looking for something a bit different for Valentine's Day I thought this was a perfect fit! It ended up that there was a group of 8 of us that all came together to do this. No one in our group had done this before besides my wife and I. It was obviously Valentine's Day as the place was packed! Not an empty seat in the house. I had booked this on line and then coordinated with the venue to be sure all of us got to sit together. The venue took care of it all. We brought in chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, other fruit, wine, beer and champagne. What a GREAT way to spend a couple of hours. Drinking painting laughing... it was s blast! Out instructor could have been a stand up comedian. She had a great dry deadpan delivery that had us laughing often. However she still managed to keep everyone on the right track and helped us all to produce things we were all proud of! (Side note... the music they played through out the night was a huge hit with our group... it was late 80 early 90s pop, rap, and alternative... it really helped to elevate the evening!) It truly is a great date night experience... and when you can bring in your own snacks and drinks it is winner winner painting dinner!! read more

Music was great, instruction was on point, the instructor was patient and calm and helped keep us on our time goal of completing the painting in the two hour time window. Always amazes me how quickly the two hours goes by. There was a fun raffle game at the end for a free painting off the wall. It's not a bad way to spend a two hour block of time, you can bring snacks, drinks, or booze to the painting as long as it's not a family event painting and I've also attended these painting classes as birthdays. This place is a blast! I usually go here with a friend or two, share some wine (BYOB), munchies, learn to paint, marvel at everyone's artistic talent...or not. Note that this place shares a parking lot with Trudy's, so parking is nuts. Plan on getting here early just to find a parking spot. One cool thing about this class is that if you really hate your painting or didn't have time to quite finish it, they have an SOS session once a month where you can return and work on your painting some more with excellent guidance from the instructors (at no additional charge). On my first visit, I forgot to paint one of the sides. Oops! That's now remedied. If you want to take the coolest class they offer, sign up for the "paint your pet" class. Sign up early because it fills up fast every time it's offered. I have made two amazing paintings of my dogs, past and present. What is Painting With a Twist? Well, think of other ways to use the phrase *with a twist*. Alcoholic drinks? You got it! Now, they don't serve alcohol here; it's BYOB. But whoever came up with the idea of drinking while painting is a genius. I've painted at home before, but it never occurred to me to chug a beer or sip some wine while doing it. What you do is go to their website and choose a painting you'd like to recreate. You can sign up via the website, or call them to do so. During the scheduled class time, an instructor teaches you step-by-step how to create the painting. I think one of the reasons alcohol is involved is so you can have something there to soothe your injured ego when your painting doesn't turn out as well as you'd hoped it would. Or maybe I was the only one who used alcohol for that purpose. I used a groupon to do this on Friday night. The course ran from 7pm to 10pm. I was the only person in the class who was there alone. It's not like I couldn't have invited a friend to come, but I did this on such short notice that I doubt I could have found an available friend. And most of the other groups/couples in the class were friends (almost all women). If you're a single guy of any age, this is a good place to meet a cute chick. I didn't have any shortage of people to talk to. It's not like the sushi cooking class I took at Central Market last January where it was all romantic couples and then me. Boy did I feel lonely that night! But I digress. The parking lot is a beast. Painting With a Twist is located next to Trudy's, so if you ever go to Trudy's after work for happy hour, perhaps you can empathize with how frustrated I was in trying to locate a parking spot. Once I got in there, I noticed other people not only brought alcohol but also food. I didn't get the impression from the website that food was allowed, but apparently it is, so bear that in mind. I saw everything from cookies to pizza, and my classmates were very willing to share. Our painting instructor's name was Andrew, and boy was he easy on the eyes! We painted a jazz scene [see pics]. It was difficult, and I wasn't the only person who thought so. Every person in there made comments about how their painting sucked. I was, however, the only person who joked about using my painting for the base of a backyard bonfire later that night. Andrew suggested I at least wait until Saturday morning to decide to burn it, as things typically look better in the light of day. Boy was he right. So halfway through the class I was going over in my head how I was going to rate this place and what I was going to say in my review. I honestly thought about walking out of the class (with my wine bottle) and never going back because I was so frustrated with my painting, but then I realized that the point of the class was to have fun. You're not being graded; you paid (or used a groupon like me) to do something fun, interesting and different. Painting With a Twist gets a big five stars for providing just that. If you decide to sign up for a class, just remember to leave your perfectionist self at home. I definitely want to take another class very soon. I'm a real artist, ma! Look at my aweome painting! Well, my mother loves Bob Ross and even she would be proud of my (non-oil, but acrylic) paint job. Those instructors at Painting with a Twist are competent and will help you to walk out of the studio with something that you can definitely put on your wall (or in my case, the office waaaaaaay in the back of the house.) My Two Cypress Trees painting was less in the 'happy trees' format and more in the "THESE FIELDS ARE ON FIRE" sort of leaning, but that's one of the great things about painting at this studio. It's your painting, so you can make it as you see fit. One guy in my class went all pointillism on his canvas and it was gorgeous. Now, having attended a morning class where I ended up only sliiightly buzzed (ha) and had a blast, I can only imagine that the longer, more expensive evening classes are enjoyable as well. Painting wasn't so fast that you felt constantly behind but definitely moved at a brisker pace than ol' Bob would have. This is due to acrylics drying very fast, I think, as well as the instructors' knowledge of how to quickly reproduce paintings that almost anyone could follow. I'd definitely recommend coming with a friend because it's absolutely hilarious seeing how each of you manages to screw up basic painting skills - and then figures out how to fix it before you move on to the next stage. Oh my gosh, this is so much fun. So many good things. We'll definitely be going back. First of all, it's really cool that you can see online what you'll be painting. When we were walking around this shopping center, we popped our head in and my husband was blown away by the concept of BYOB paint class. I then absolutely knew that it was going to be a Christmas present. Two days after Christmas, we roll in. I suggest you get there early so you can open your wine and get a little buzz on first, though we were there almost an hour early, but they didn't mind, they let us in and set up around us and played fun 60s and 70s music. Once the majority of the folks got there (full house), our awesome instructor and assistant got us started and led us step by step through a couples portrait of an Austin sunrise. I'll admit, I've painted a time or two before, so I didn't feel out of my element, but looking around the whole class at the end - everyone's painting looked really good for the most part. If you're not artistically inclined, they can still get you to produce something you probably will hang on your wall (ours is!). They had a raffle at the end, took a class picture, and had signs that said "I painted this" to take pictures with. Super fun, super simple, yay wine and paints! read more

Everything is supplied to you when you get your seat and it really is fun to follow along the step by step process of painting the picture of the night (ours being Gruene Hall). It's amazing to see how everyone has a completely different interpretation of the instructions, yet we all come out with a very similar picture. I definitely recommend trying it out if you are looking for something "different" to do or we even said what a creative date idea it would be. It can take a while, so don't expect to run in and out in 30 mins, but well worth the time you spend to walk out with your new masterpiece! Last night, for my girlfriend's birthday, we wound up trying out some painting with a twist. Now, before I start talking about the experience, let me set the background up for you. I don't enjoy painting, coloring, creating visual art of any kind. I never have (mom used to get on my ass about not liking to color). Heck, I even took band in 7th grade to avoid having to take art class. But when the girlfriend says she wants to do something on her birthday, you suck up your personal feelings about art and do it. Boy, was I glad I did. First of all, nobody is going to critique your paintings here except for yourself. Everyone is there to have fun. The environment is very jovial, with the wine and conversation flowing freely. The artist and helper are there to help guide you through the painting of the night, and they were really good about sticking to the schedule. Everyone has a borrowed apron to splatter paint on, and is given the palette required to finish that night's painting. The corks pop, the class starts and somehow some magic happens such that, by the end of the night, you have a freakin work of art! Seriously, I painted something that doesn't look like a turd. My girlfriend's was much nicer looking, but I expected that. The whole thing cost us $35 apiece for the 2-hour class. The 3-hour class is another $10, but there are some pretty impressive looking 3-hour paintings. You don't paint for 2 hours straight, but take an occasional break for drying and refills. My friends and I went to the Paint Your Pet class last night, and I cannot stop raving about it to everyone within earshot. I'm not even remotely artistic normally, but I still ended up with this amazing portrait of my beloved cat. (My husband was extremely impressed. My cat was nonplussed.) This place is a really cool concept and could be a fun activity for friends or as a date night idea. My boyfriend and I headed over to PWAT last night with Pinot Noir in hand, ready to give our creative sides some exposure. It was a sold out class which meant lots and lots of people were there. While you are encouraged to bring wine and snacks, I think you'd have a really hard time actually eating anything as there is not much table space and people were knocking their easels around trying to keep up with the teacher. I am artistically challenged but found that the teacher's step-by-step instructions made the whole endeavor less daunting. I liked the class and would go back again, but most likely on a weekend and not on a week night. I docked the place a star because the teacher was time management challenged. We had extensive breaks (25+ minutes) in which most people were just sitting around. Due to not managing time well during the regular session, the teacher crammed in and raced through the last 10 steps. Incidentally, those last steps were all fine detail work. So if you don't care about how the painting turns out, you probably won't have an issue with this. Otherwise, you might be peeved and wonder why you were sitting around for half an hour when you could have been painting. Our class which was supposed to go from 7-10pm ended up lasting until 10:30. This gal turns into a pumpkin around that time, so it was a little too long for me. Like I said, weekend class next time! read more

What a blast! This is a great business model for all you entrepeneurs. I took my two teenage daughters and a couple of their friends (15 and 16 yr olds). Everyone of us came out with a beautiful painting. And they all couldn't stop thanking me for taking them there on the way home and for the next couple of days! I like the BYO beverages and food aspect. So you can make a party out of it you'd like. My only con's are that we seemed kinda' jambed packed in the studio and parking was a nightmare. We went on a Friday night and the studio is located behind Trudy's North Star. The class ended up starting late because of class mates having a problem find a place to park. I got there at the recommended 20 minutes prior and it took me 10 minutes to get a spot. They also do children's groups, like Girl/Boy Scouts. So if you have a troop with an artistitic flare this might be a great outing for you. Pricing is a little high per person ($25-$45), but they include everything you need to paint, so it's worth it! read more

My girlfriends and I saw this Groupon, and had to jump on it. It looked too fun! And fun it was! Painting With a Twist (PWAT, lol..sounds funny when you say it out loud) is an excellent concept. BYOB arts and crafts, hell ya! This is a paint by steps class, so everyone will walk out of there with a decent painting. Depending on how artistic you are, you might walk out of there with a great painting. PWAT posts a calendar of what paintings they're going to do for the month, so you can decide what awesome piece you want to hang over your mantle, and choose that day. When we finally concluded that "The Peacock" would be the most ballin' portrait to paint, we called and reserved our seats, but happy hour first, of course. Unfortunately, we got a bit too happy at happy hour, and showed up late. We felt like total jerks, but PWAT was very accommodating, and wasn't upset about our tardiness. The young man (can't remember his name, too drunk) helped us get up to speed with the rest of the class in no time. After 3 hours, two bottles of wine, and lots of harassing the young man, we all had some awesome looking peacocks..or at least we thought they were awesome. This is an activity for anybody. I think guys would actually enjoy this too. It's very fun, and a great way to meet some new people. You can also reserve a session for parties, which I think would be a great idea for a group of ladies. I came here for the "Van Gogh's to Austin" painting session and had a blast. We didn't even buy a GroupOn / Living Social / Google Offer, which seems to be the de facto way people find their ways into art classes like this studio offers. My biggest complaint is definitely the lack of space in the class area given the wide expanse available at the front of the studio. With everyone cramped together it made moving around limited, which is problematic if you need to get closer to the instructor to see what they're doing. Being limited to only a single bathroom is troublesome, especially for the longer sessions. Parking can be a bit tight because of the restaurants nearby that get really busy around dinner time, so plan accordingly. Also arriving 15 minutes ahead of time is probably overkill since the instructors seem to wait until everyone arrives anyways. read more

We just enjoyed a pleasant, quiet couple of hours painting an 'I love you' in the sand (see picture). The woman leading the painting was easy to follow and her assistant was there when you needed him. I needed him for a bunch for napkins. Everything is provided other than any desired drinks/food. They raffle off a painting from a selection of about 10 for each class; We won! They also offer an SOS class for any participants that might want to do more to their paintings but run out of time. Let me start off by saying that I am by NO MEANS any sort of artist, so I was a little hesitant when a friend suggested Painting with a Twist for a girls night. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the instructors made everything! This is definitely the kind of place where even a person who "can't color in the lines" can produce a masterpiece! It also doesn't hurt that you drink bottles of wine at the same time, so ANYTHING looks good by the time the class is over!! :) Honestly, this place is almost therapeutic. Good wine, great friends, no-stress painting... If they started offering packages similar to yoga studios - I would be a regular!! I've gone to PWAT twice now and it's always a great time. I enjoy art and painting so this is a guaranteed good time for me. We had Laura (or was it Lauren? ) as our host and she was great!!! She was really funny and made the process super fun. Even if you're not the best at painting, the employees are there to help you out and guide you along the way. As far as the class, both times I felt slightly rushed in certain parts of class, but never felt like I ran out of time. I think since there are different skill levels, allowing more time for people to work through the process could help, even if it's just ten minutes more. Regardless, it's great for small or large parties! it's BYO-drinks and snacks, so make sure you come prepared with plenty of cheese and wine... it's helps with the painting process :) read more

Up on the wall at PWAT is a message suggesting that you avoid painting each other (not that the environment gives off that kind of vibe). Still, I could see how more mixed company in here what with the b.y.o.drinking and all might get a bit loopy by the time you put the finishing touches on your faux-Matisse or still life of Bevo and the Austin skyline. However, as Catherine said, there's way more chicks in here than guys, so that probably won't happen. The instructor was nice and people seemed to be able to keep up for the most part. If you feel the need to touch up your masterpiece further after the designated painting period expires, there are 's.o.s.' dates where you can come by and do some damage control. I better figure out when that is because my moonlit blossoms look more like genetically defected popcorn. read more

A co-worker and I went and painted portraits of our pets. We had such a good time. We were both scared to start (already to mess up) but were soon put at ease with the instructor and the entire atmosphere. Help is there when you need it. Instructions were great. Everyone was in a good mood. I was not satisfied with my end result at the end of the session so I took them up on their offer to come in on Saturday to finish up. I am so glad that I did. I signed up for a class as soon as I found out this place existed. Painting classes where you can bring your own alcohol? Is this real life? I went with a friend and we painted an Austin version of Van Gogh's Starry Night. I was pretty excited because that's my favorite painting, but also a little trepidatious because what if I seriously eff up my painting? Queue remarks from everyone in the class stating, "I'm not an artist," "My painting looks nothing like the teacher's," and "I am seriously fcking this up." Sometimes I thought we went a little quickly, but that was mostly because I am a perfectionist and it took me a little while to get through some of the steps. (If I had been painting it correctly, it wouldn't have taken me so long.) I still finished my painting on time, though, and was actually pretty impressed with myself. My painting has more influences from pointillism than it does post-Impressionism, but I still thought it was pretty kick-ass. While there, I saw so many paintings that I want to recreate. Paint your pet? Holy cow, sign me up! That's just what I need is more pictures of my cats, but, hey! This time they'll be painted! And the Breakfast at Tiffany's painting? I'm sure my Audrey Hepburn will look a little worse for wear, but how cool would that be? This is a fun activity to do alone, with friends, or as a date. Don't worry about your painting looking perfect - go in and have fun and your painting will look awesome. The steps are easy to follow and as long as you don't get too caught up in the whole "I'm not an artist" mentality, you're sure to have a blast. read more

We have been here twice for a work event and each time has been amazing. The ladies that work here are so incredible at there jobs! When you walk in you are greeted with smiles and a blank canvas and asked to pick a station. When everyone is there the instructor goes over the "rules" which is be positive, drink wine and have fun!! The instructors are amazing and are always walking around helping and giving you positive feedback. I love how helpful they are and how encouraging they are of your artistic ability. The music they play is something for everyone and the give several breaks for refills! I love that it is BYOB and I love the great atmosphere!! They bring out the inner artist in everyone! Can't wait to come back! read more
