The attention to helping these kids get better just isnt there. If you're the coaches kid you get full time to play. Most coaches let their own kid pretty much run the show. They seem to always be the ball hogs, taking way too many shots! Missing enough to pull them out but that rarely ever happens. Guy running the league is as smug and cocky as they come. Its obvious a side hustle to supplement his income. 250$ per kid @ about 100 kids per session the guy is winning for sure! Our Toastmasters club continues to attract new members and many visitors. I so enjoy acting as the club's VP of Education and scheduling program. The organization may have the same name, but the people who are there are judgmental and unwelcoming (when I saw them in other contexts after I tried to go to an Open House). One of their current members in trying to help another one, admitted to their difficulties on the Chris Kindness Award website: the current member wrote: "Just these past two months we have had serious race related conflict in a nonprofit we are both involved in." My experience with them is in line with a different comment on the Chris Kindness website: An ex-Hackermom: "The non-profit mentioned by another commenter is bleeding members from marginalized groups, and her response to many WOC, disabled, and other brave moms raising concerns can be summed up as "you're not the right kind of mom to belong here" and "don't let the door hit you on the way out." Throughout this time I have never seen or heard any negative responses from the children or their families. Sometimes I sit in on rehearsals and I've always been impressed with how the participants remain focused on the projects at hand. Seeing a large group of children concentrating on their work and not "messing around" while rehearsing is impressive to me. I really appreciate the work ethic of the participants, especially since this is a behavior that you don't see much of among modern children these days. For years my child has eagerly and regularly attended Standing Ovation productions. For the past couple of years she has also been an assistant, working with the younger people. This has been a valuable experience for her and she also continues to participate in productions with her peer group. There's a certain amount of self discipline that is necessary to pursue the performing arts. That self discipline is something my daughter developed largely through Standing Ovations. This troupe may not be right for every child and family, but I am extremely happy with the way I've seen Barrett work with my daughter and her friends. His rehearsals are always open to visitors and I give him 5 stars across the board.

On that first day, although my daughter was a little hesitant, Barrett was funny, engaging, and inclusive of all the children in the class. At the same time, he had good control of the group (despite the varying ages from as young as 5 to 13 and large size of the group of maybe 15-20 kids). Because my daughter was so young, I was initially concerned about how well she would do in such a big mixed group of kids. But every week, she told me how much fun she had, all the things she learned, and the friends she made. Each encounter I have had with Barrett has been professional and warm. Yes, sometimes he's loud (but what drama teacher isn't, especially in a large group of gregarious, energetic kids?). Sometimes he has to be stern, but in my experience, he hasn't done it needlessly. Instead, I've observed that he emphasizes teamwork among the kids--letting them know if one person doesn't pull their weight, it affects the whole production. That's reality in life, and that's a skill I want my child to learn. My experience has been that he works with the kids to build their confidence and my daughter has definitely gained so much from Barrett and his group.

There is no staff there, but we are able to set up, bring in food and refreshments, and have our program. Sometimes, we set up in the courtyard. Sometimes, we are only inside. Sometimes we have guest vendors. And sometimes we have a room that it set up only for holding our stuff. But each time has been great. The bathrooms are clean, the kitchen area is nice, and when we clean up, I feel good knowing that we will be able to return for our next event.
