Waterfront

My first time at this incredible venue and I've been to concerts for the last 40 years. I was blown away by how great the experience was. The place itself is really interesting and beautiful. Fantastic staff the reasonably priced drinks in the whole vibe really made the concert experience special. The location it's right on the waterfront in Southwest DC where the Wharf is. There are tons of restaurants and places to check out before and after the show. I didn't try the food at the anthem, but they did have regular bar food as options with tables and chairs on an upper level to hang out and eat. I can't wait to come back and see another show here.

The efficiency of this place! The lines moved fast at every point--to get inside, to buy merch, to order drinks. The staff know exactly what they're doing. Bathrooms were spacious and clean, and there are elevators to all three floors. The venue is big, and there is GA standing space on all 3 levels, but I wish it was more clearly marked. It does seem worth it to buy seats for a guaranteed view. Warning for sensitive ears that it is LOUD. They were handing out earplugs at the guest services table inside the main doors.

Overall, I do like how this venue is metro accessible and the bathrooms are usually clean. I also like how at the end of every show the bartenders provide cups of water for anyone to take on the way out. The ventilation isn't the best when there's a lot of people. I've been to a handful of shows where the performer had to stop multiple times due to people passing out. GA can be difficult if there are taller people in front of you. I also had balcony seating before, and they didn't have any chairs available until later in the show.

Dear reader, The Anthem is easily one of my favourite DC venues for a concert or show. The main floor is largely standing room, which creates fantastic energy, but there are ticketed seats in the balconies if one prefers enjoying the evening without fighting for territory on the floor. The bars are large and remarkably efficient, and even the bathrooms deserve praise: spacious, clean, and designed to keep crowds moving. Getting in and out is generally painless. Popular shows can produce quite the line outside, but it moves surprisingly quickly. Another point in its favour: you can bring a small bag and an empty water bottle to fill inside, a civilised little convenience during a long show. The Wharf location makes the entire evening even better, with loads of restaurants and bars nearby for dinner or drinks before or after. Great venue, great atmosphere, and consistently enjoyable. I always love seeing shows here.

Came to The Anthem to see Martin Garrix, and it ended up being one of the better concert venues I've been to. The venue has multiple floors and several bars, which helps a lot with crowd flow and keeps drink lines manageable. The bathrooms were also cleaner than I expected for a packed show. One of the biggest perks is how accessible the venue is, it's just a short walk from the metro, making it easy to get to and from the event. The sound system was great, and the lighting and production were exactly what you'd want for an EDM show. My only complaint is that ticket prices can be a bit steep, but overall I'd say The Anthem is one of the better live music venues in DC, especially if you're into electronic music. I'd definitely come back for another show.

What an awesome venue Saw Bush here last weekend and I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. Feels small and intimate and it was easy in and out with tons and tons of dining. Can come before or after a show and walk around. Lyft pickup was fast and easy too. Will absolutely come back.

Very clean venue. Loved the atmosphere. Lines ran very smoothly. Staff was very helpful. Drinks were ok.

The Anthem is amazing. The venue is huge, clean and safe. We took metro to the Waterfront stop. (Safeway is beside the exit). If you have time, go early and stroll along the wharf. It is beautiful. We watched the sunset on the water. There is parking near the entrance to the Wharf. It is pricey and takes a while to enter/exit. We saw All Time Low & warm up bands. We got in line at 430pm. Doors opened at 5:30pm. Anthem employees walked by the line & handed out wristbands (after checking id). They gave instructions on Will Call and which lines to enter. The staff was focused, helpful and nice. The lines moved quickly. BAG TIP: limit what you bring. I had a small cross body purse. The bag policy is vague and any bag can be rejected if security thinks it is too large. There are bag lockers. Save the money on the locker & spend it on food instead. Don't bring anything larger than a fanny pack or small cinch sack. All bags will be searched. There are several bars inside. I lost count. It looks like each floor has at least one or more bars. There is a small bar at the front of the building on the second level (photo opp). There are snacks for sale on the second floor and at bars (popcorn, brownies, candy - most $5). Hot food can be ordered upstairs but there is only one pick up area: right side of the stage, lower level. There are sandwiches, basic snacks and fries. The fries were okay. There are so many restaurants in the area. We stopped at Ben & Jerry's. Come early and grab a bite where you can sit. There are several vendors in addition to nearby businesses. The venue was packed. Security had a large presence. They circulated throughout the building and were positioned by the stage. They were skilled at catching crowd surfers. There must have been at least fifty attendees brave enough to be lifted in the air. Things stayed peaceful and festive. One person passed out and the staff stepped in quickly to assist. The floor was crowded. We had a great view from the middle second level. There were a few bathrooms around the building. Capacity was 48 in the restrooms so the lines moved quickly. There are elevators and ADA seating. The sound is great. If you need earplugs, just ask an employee. We had a nice visit. It was lovely having a great community evening on a sad news day. We left before the last song to miss a lot of the crowd. There is something for everyone - seated areas or standing in general admission. We were happy to sit. We'll be back.

The venue is amazing!! Very easy to find, quick entry in...love the fact that GA is levels 1/2/3 of the entire facility. Good drinks! The waterfront is also a plus too.

I had an amazing time at this venue! It's located in The Wharf, so there are a lot of parking garages nearby (we parked a little farther away for a cheaper price). There is plenty of food and drink options near the venue to enjoy before a show. I came here for the Addison Rae concert and had an amazing time. The Anthem is HUGE! The GA floor has so much space, I loved the raised standing room in the back for shorter people like me. You can also choose to buy seated options on the second floor. They have a ground VIP section too. The flow of this venue is easy. They had plenty of restrooms, easy to find. The merch was in clear spots and so was the food and drinks. I was able to bring in a small purse. The security and check-in process was extremely easy. I'd highly recommend attending a show here.

KATSEYE at the Anthem

This was my first time at the Anthem, and the experience was overall great! Traveled down to see KATSEYE on their Beautiful Chaos tour. Parking was very easy to find and get out of. The staff working at the Anthem were all very kind and helpful. The graphics and special effects were some of the best and high quality that I've ever seen seen. Some things to note: the venue was beautiful, but very cold. There was a noticeable chill as soon as you entered the seating area. Make sure to bundle up! There were a lot of food items that were not as expensive as other concert venues I've been to. The best item was the fries. The burger and empanadas were fine on the inside, but the outer bun/wrap were so dry that it made the burger and empanada hard to eat. It crumbled in my hands as I tried to take a bite. But it lasted us through the show, so it was fine.

I've been to several concerts at this location (Mother Mother, Cavetown, Ice Spice, Black Eyed Peas, etc.) and it is a solid venue with a good variety of popular musical artists. It's located in a fantastic location on the Wharf, so it's easy to take a Metro or arrive after a dinner. However, they also have solid food options at the venue in case you want to eat there before the concert. Interestingly, the venue doesn't seem to have reseller tickets offered directly on Ticketmaster's app. It is annoying that I can't see any reseller prices if I miss out on a presale and have to check third parties like StubHub, which I don't trust as much. However, kudos to them if that's something that the venue is doing specifically to prevent scalpers.

A is for Anthem & Introduction to alphabet series: Just started a new alphabet series of Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, the first of the A's Au Bon Pain on 1100 13th St NW is recently permanently closed, but I wrote a quick 1 paragraph review anyway in honor of them. I'm doing each letter restaurant or business from my credit card bill based on eras of time. When I lived in northern VA October 2011-September 2017, A is for The Anthem represents October 2017-December 2018 era, and the rest are each calendar year 2019, 2020, etc. up through 2024. The experiences at the Anthem: Anthem opened in October 2017 when I moved to MD from VA. I first visited about a year later in October 2018 to see Goo Goo Dolls concert with a friend, who is a mega-fan of them. Apparently, I bought some sort of alcoholic beverage that time as that was on my credit card. I'm less inclined to drink these days. Prices are relatively high for drinks like any concert venue and also high like drink prices in DC. Staff was efficiently making the drinks. When I saw Goo Goo Dolls in 2018, I was very impressed with the open air experience at the venue, high ceilings and spacious concert space unlike the small venues like 9:30 Club, which has its charm too, but I prefer The Anthem experience over 9:30 Club, where it gets more packed like sardines. My next visit to The Anthem was Evanescence in May 2019. Wow, amazing concert. Don't tell my mega-Goo Goo Dolls friend, but Evanescence performance was superior to Goo. I had won the Evanescence tickets, and a potential bidding relationship was disappointed when I didn't ask her. I went with a male friend. In spite of that hiccup of her jealously, we got in a relationship anyway, so it worked out in the end (for a while while in that relationship). My next visit was in August 2019 to see the Raconteurs. I won a meet & greet with them. That new girlfriend of less than 2 months was out of town, so I took another friend to that show, which was the 1st time trying Falafel Inc. also at the Wharf. In January 2020, while having the INWEGO app, my girlfriend of that time went to our only concert at the Anthem together, Grace Potter, which was an awesome concert. We were in the upper deck area, which had great view above with seating. INWEGO gave us those tickets. INWEGO was an event based app, you paid $19 for one event in the month, $39 for 3, or $59 for 5. I generally did the $39 for 3, but sometimes did $19 depending on what they had for the month. It was cool things like concerts, plays, comedy shows, & sporting events. I took advantage of all of the above. I joined INWEGO in mid-April 2019, & we know what happened in mid-March 2020. INWEGO sadly went defunct in September 2020 as they couldn't operate under the Covid environment. I joked the INWEGO era was the best 11 months of my life. On Halloween October 31, 2024, my current girlfriend & I saw B-52's here. I had won tickets at an event in Silver Spring. Not the best performance, but a nice time, and my g/f's first time at Anthem, which she was impressed too. My most recent visit was Saturday, September 6, I had won tickets to Pulp on the radio. I'll be honest, I didn't know much about Pulp, but that show was awesome. Anthem had changed to the back entrance on Maine Ave as opposed to the front on the Wharf side for radio winners, so that threw me off. After realizing this back entrance was an option, it made it easier to get out the venue and closer to the Metro to get the heck out of DC. My g/f was unavailable to go to this concert as she had a bachelorette party. So, the same friend who went with me to the Evanescence concert in May 2019 has the distinction of being the only person to have gone with me to TWO concerts here. Even the 2 girlfriends I mentioned was just one concert there. So, in summary I've been here for 6 concerts over the years. I'll be honest while I enjoy concerts, I mainly try to win concerts on the radio or whatever as they are expensive nowadays, and they aren't my top favorite activities. Anthem is a great venue, my favorite concert venue in the District.

Ask the Community - The Anthem

Is there an age limit for concerts?

Generally speaking, our shows are ALL AGES. Every now and then, we'll have an age restriction, which will be noted on the ticketing page.

I am temporarily in a wheelchair. What is the best way to get to The Anthem for entry? Is there a special ADA entrance?

Hi Janet - Our ADA entry is located at 900 Maine Ave. Please call us at (202) 888-0020 to make arrangements.

Anyone know about reserved seating in the "boxes - bar stool area" (the ones I'm looking at are for the 2nd floor, box 2, row F)? how is the view and will we be able to sit?

You will be able to see, & expect a good view. Box 2 was overlooking the stage, from the side, close to the stage. So; from the stage (performer's view) box 2 would be at 9 or 3 o'clock (elevated), so you're looking down at the side of the stage.…

Is the floor (the pit) elevated as it moves away from the stage or is it flat throughout? Can you see well from the back?

Hi Greg - The floor is graded slightly, and there are risers in the very back of the floor for better viewing. Additionally, there are two tiered balconies to provide excellent viewing locations from all around the venue.

Am I allowed to bring in an unopened water bottle?

I don't believe you can bring an unopened bottle per the FAQ: https://www.theanthemdc.com/info/faq/…

Is smoking allowed in the entire venue or in just certain areas? Surprised to see so many people smoking indoors.

No smoking indoors. Just a sweet elevated smoking area outside overlooking the Wharf

The Anthem apparently has two separate queues for Gen Adm entry, in two different places (one by Shake Shack and one by District Pier). Is one entrance better than the other for getting to the front of the floor faster?

The 2 shows I went to, they filled the first line first before they stated filling the second line. That first line got in first, but once the first 40/50 people from line 1 got in they started to feed both evenly.

Any Yelp Elite people, or frequent flyers to this venue have Hotel suggestions? What is a reasonable place to stay, that is within close proximity?

There is a hotel down there, but not sure how expensive. However, there are 4 nice hotels in the Navy Yard, which is a great location with lots of restaurants and not as expensive or touristy as the Wharf. Hampton Inn, Courtyard Marriott, Residence…

Considering going to a show alone and wanted to know if it's safe to walk back to the Waterfront Metro after a show? Or if I use Uber or Lyft--is there a lot of competition as every one exits?…

It's usually super busy after everyone leaves a show a night. I think you would be okay walking alone, since there are so many other people. You should be good with an Uber or Lyft, I suggest Uber pool, you'll probs get a ride quicker that way.

What time do the shows end on weeknights?

Right around 11

Must bags be put in the coat check? I understand they need to be checked on the way in, but if I bring a bag, do I have to hand it over to the coat check?

No. They will check your bags, but you won't have to check them. I did see them make a girl throw food away, but that's about it.

We're going to Anthem tomorrow night for a concert and we're driving south from Maryland. Do you suggest parking some place and taking an Uber in or is it easy enough to drive directly to the venue?

Check spothero. I found a spot 1/4 Mile away for $24. There is a parking garage at The Wharf but getting in and out is a pain, especially after a show. There are several…

So how hot does it get inside? going to see Jack White tonight, trying to figure out how to be comfortable....

It really doesn't get that hot. There's plenty of space and A/C inside

Just bought Standing Room General Admission for Tenacious D, Any tips on getting as close as possible to the stage? If we just get to the venue as early as possible and claim our spot, can we get super close?

Yes, you'll be fine. Most people mill about, grab drinks, look around the space. But once you find your space and see people moving towards the stage, don't leave.

If you purchase general adminission tickets, if there any place you can sit?

Nope

What kind of seats are in the "Super Excellent" section? We have a large group going and a couple of the guys are pretty large...

The super excellent seat are the way to go. They are balcony style seats with lots of room. I feel like there is not one bad seat as far as view goes. The price is awesome as well.

My daughter (19) bought tickets for her and her little brother (10). Will they both need id's to get into the Anthem?

I bought three tickets, all with my name on them. One of them was for a 10 year old. The ID is needed for over 21 and under 21 each gets their own wristband.

What do they check the tickets for ? I purchased two. One for me and one for a friend. They both have my name. Is that an issue?

They check ID to make sure you are of age to drink if you are they place a band on your right arm. I see no issue with the tickets both my tickets had my names on them, we just went in together. The tickets are scanned so probably making sure that…

Does the venue have a coat/bag check so i don't have to worry about holding my stuff the whole time?

Yup! They have coat check to the right of the bathrooms on the far side of the venue

Has anyone figured out the best spot for a Lyft or Uber to pick you up after a show at The Anthem? They had trouble finding me last time.

I parked up the street for 10 dollars. Two blocks away under the overpass. We'd came in from Richmond.

4.5 stars. Overall,…read morethis is a really great place to see a show. I came to see Flawed Mangoes and for the most part it was a great time. The venue is like a really clean dive bar that hosts live music. The staff were all very polite and incredibly welcoming. To be situated at the Wharf, the food and beverages were surprisingly affordable... at least by DC standards. The general admission tickets are for standing only. I paid for premium seating and got, well... an actual seat. Unfortunately, this is where I ran into issues. I really wish that Union Stage would offer more smaller tables (1-2 tops) because I had the unfortunate experience of being forced to involuntarily third-wheel some random couple's date night. As someone who frequently attends concerts alone, I hate communal seating. If I'm paying extra for a seat, I don't want to spend the evening sharing a table with strangers. In this case, the couple who joined me at my table spent much of the show carrying on conversations, using flash photography despite it being prohibited, and generally making themselves unwelcome part of my concert experience. It was distracting, annoying, and made it difficult to fully enjoy the performance. Adding more 1-2 top tables for solo concertgoers or couples would significantly improve the premium seating experience by giving people the option to enjoy the show uninterrupted and with the company they actually chose (and paid!) to spend the evening with. It's also worth noting that there is no wait staff to serve you at the tables. So if you grab a seat at a table, make sure you have something to put on the table to indicate that it is occupied. There are QR codes on the table where you can order and pay, but you still have to go to the floor to pick up your food. I got a half cheese pizza and an Aperol Spritz. The pizza was good by dive bar standards. Nothing special about it, but it hit the spot. The Aperol Spritz was also surprisingly good. The sound system is great. However, we need to talk about the lighting situation. I'm not sure if this is how Union Stage typically operates or if this is something that can be attributed to the artist, but the lighting choices for this concert were overwhelming. I've been to dozens of concerts over the course of my life, but I've never had spotlights that repeatedly point directly into the audience, but that was my experience throughout this entire show. I had to put on my sunglasses in this dark venue to keep myself from being quite literally blinded by the light. The background lights and everything were fine, but repeatedly shining spotlights into the crowd was not a good choice. The most expensive part of this night, by far, was the parking, which is not the fault of the venue. I paid $38 to park for 4 hours, but fortunately it was a very short walk to the venue. There are multiple parking garages as well as an extremely limited amount of street parking near this venue. The garage was the only feasible option that evening since so many people were out for the concert, viewing the World Cup, as well as attending events at other bars and restaurants in the general area. All told, I had a really great time at Union Stage. While I hate traveling into DC and I'm not keen on spending $40 on parking, if there's another artist performing at this venue that I want to see, I would definitely come back.

The sound system probably needs an upgrade prior to artist coming on stage the music being played was not really audible and didn't carry any thing to the crowd. The merch table being by the entrance caused more congestion. 3. We started with a lemon drop and a Stella, then shared the firecracker sushi roll--it was fresh, delicious, and spot-on with flavor. For our entrées, the double-cut lamb chops were tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection. The lamb ragù was just as impressive, with fresh, al dente pasta and an amazing sauce. Between the cozy booths and the attentive service from our server, January, it was such a comfortable place to spend an evening. We'll definitely be back--thank me later!

The rich woodwork and high ceilings give the place such a beautiful, classic feel. We ordered the chocolate mousse, which was light and came with plenty of whipped cream. My friend got the pumpkin cake, which was apparently so good he barely left me a bite! I also tried the Honeymoon Phase cocktail, and it was quite a nice pour. Our bartender was awesome. Verdict: A lovely spot to end the evening with dessert, cocktails, and a beautiful atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the interior! I'd definitely come back to try more food!

The Anthem is only a five-minute walk along the scenic Wharf from the Irish neighborhood pub, which is both upscale and warm, with waterfront vibes. We sat in the main room that also houses the bar. There is a second-floor mezzanine overlooking the establishment, with additional windows that bring in natural light. Across from us, there is a private hangout room that I believe you can book for larger parties to celebrate birthdays, watch football, knock back pints and chips, or any combination of the above. Their Beckett's Beef Burger was wicked good with Bacon Jam and Chimichurri Aioli. Their pints are on point, and their Irish espresso martini with Paddy's cold brew, Kahula, espresso, and Demerara is solid. If you like a drop of whiskey, they do have a solid selection of Irish Whiskeys for a pour or two. Kirwin's fit the bill well to enjoy the vibes, enjoy drinks with your friends, and look to fill your belly before checking out a show at the Anthem, as we did.

I was invited to attend a Moth storytelling event here and it was such a refreshing night out. The stories were heartfelt, funny, and sometimes deeply vulnerable in the best way. The host kept the energy going all night and was absolutely hilarious. It was the kind of clean fun that reminds you how powerful a room full of people sharing stories can be. The theater itself adds to the experience. Being inside feels like stepping back into the good old days before everything was streamed and watched at home. If you're feeling a little nostalgic for live entertainment and the magic of gathering together for a shared experience, this is the place. Definitely check out their lineup. It's a great excuse to get out of the house and enjoy something real, live, and memorable.

We had such a fun time at K Live Karaoke at The Wharf!…read more We booked one of the small rooms, which is supposed to accommodate up to 10 people. There were six of us, and I'd say that was the perfect number to be comfortable. You could fit 10, but it would definitely be a little cramped. We ordered several different food items and drinks, and everything I had was good. The food did take a while to come out after we ordered, but honestly, we were having so much fun singing and enjoying ourselves that it didn't bother us too much. My only other small complaint was the song-search keyboard. Instead of a standard QWERTY keyboard, the letters are arranged alphabetically, which made searching for songs a little challenging at first. That said, there were PLENTY of songs to choose from across all different genres, so everyone was able to find something they wanted to sing. The best indication of how much fun we had? We ended up extending our time because nobody was ready to leave! Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend K Live Karaoke for a fun night out with friends. I'd absolutely go back!

The server was great with explaining everything and checking up on everyone. I do wish the 2 hours started at the time of check in because we checked in within the 15 minute grace period, which cut our time off a little short. The keyboard to type is also a bit strange as it's in alphabetical order instead of the standard keyboard. Overall, it's nice in here with the lights and you can tell everything is new.
