Chef Karla has built a reputation in Kankakee at various venues, most recently at the now closed 8 One Five. My favorite sandwich is the Arch Enemy with its familiar but upscaled flavors of a popular fast food staple. She consistently comes up with off menu specialty sandwiches. I unfortunately do not remember his name, but he was working around 10:30 p.m. and did a great job. After being seated, we waited much longer than expected for our waitress, especially considering she only appeared to be serving us and one or two other tables. During that time, we did not see her come out from the back area at all. When she finally approached us after approximately 15-20 minutes, she quickly took our order without greeting us and then left. About 10-15 minutes later, our food arrived. For that wait time, it was reasonable, and I would like to compliment the cooks because the food was very good and enjoyable. However, after bringing us the food, the waitress left again. She did not check on us throughout the meal and only spoke to us briefly once. She did not seem attentive or interested in providing good service. At the end of the meal, after we had enjoyed the food prepared well by the kitchen staff and appreciated the kindness of the host, the waitress brought us the check. When I reached to hand her my card, she said, "Please look it over first in case I messed up." While I appreciate the honesty, it was concerning that she expected an error. Unfortunately, there was a mistake. She also charged full price for my wonton tacos, even though every Applebee's promotion I have seen lists them as part of the half-price appetizer menu. The final issue was that she asked whether I had signed the receipt and tried to collect it while we were still seated at the table. I found that disrespectful, as I have never had a server ask for the receipt before I was ready to leave. Overall, the visit was enjoyable because of the food and the excellent host. However, the service from the waitress was very disappointing. We believe her name was Livy, though the receipt listed Jaylah C. Regardless of the name, her level of service was unacceptable and did not reflect well on the restaurant experience.
