My sister and I popped in on Friday night for a bite to eat and a quick drink. I've been a bit of a 78 regular since it opened. It's perfect as it's just round the corner and everything is vegan, so no need to ask a thousand questions prior to ordering! I've always found the food to be excellent and the atmosphere to be as warm and welcoming as the log fire and comfy armchairs. Clearly I'm sold on the place so I'll try to write this review from my sister's perspective (non-vegan visiting from England). Friday night dining was packed and we were lucky to get a table but the service was still good. Efficient but laid back. I ordered the special, a simple Thai vegetable curry with rice and flat-bread. After several tastes my sister confirmed that is was delicious and well cooked, vegetables al-dente and potatoes soft and fluffy. Her choice was the nachos with coconut chilli. She commended the portion size, the robust flavour of the chilli and the extra texture added by the coconut making it not 'just a big bowl of beans'. We both accompanied our meals with a Williams beer and topped off with a malt of the month and the whole thing still came in under £30. Pretty good going if you ask me! read more

This place is stellar! Came in on a rainy day and felt so cozy. They have a full bar, so we quickly warmed up with a round of Hendricks and tonics. Ordered some delicious tomato soup, and feasted on vegan burgers and quesadillas. 100% recommend to anyone even non-vegan/vegetarians. read more

My fellow yelper Evelyn has painted an excellent image that does the 78 real justice, and I feel it is not necessary to try and out do her! However I can expand on the drinks and the food having sampled both. I'm not too accustomed to vegan or vegetarian menus as I almost always opt for the carnivorous option when eating out so I went for the veggie burger. The burger was very good, filling and wholesome as you would expect from a burger but the flavour was much more vibrant, yet the burger just melted in my mouth. Portions are a good size too and the menu is very creative. Of my vegan friends many bang on about the 78 and it as for this reason I decided to check it out. It isn't just the food that is great they have a very good selection of lagers beers and ciders at the bar. Of this selection I had a pint or two of Birra Morreti as I hadn't seen on tap before in Glasgow. Besides offerning an excellent vegan menu and a well stocked bar the 78 also promotes live music performances and in some cases the nights are supported with food deals. There support of Meat free Mondays allows two courses for £8 or 3 for £10, Thursday is Dub n Grub night where the DJs of Mungo's Hi-Fi are on the decks playing Reggae, Dancehall and Dub whilst you tuck in to a cheaper menu of food (£4 for a main £2 for starter/desert). Visiting The 78 last week, I was surprised how swish the bar has become. Since the last time I came here was for a gig of nose music (I was going through a breakup at the time, and it suited my mood), my memories were of a cold, dark venue, slightly grubby but in the tradition of the 13th Note et al. Now, it is lovely: intimate, wooden tables, comfortable sofa, a long bar with pleasant but still hip staff. The food was great: the vegan burgers make a real change from the usual meat heavy menus, and the desert was too rich for me, so I shared it. Absolutely delicious. read more

Having not been here in a long time it was lovely to get back today for some lunch. I love this place; it manages to be both light and cosy. The staff are always really nice and... well... they have the best ginger beer in the world available (Luscombe's in case you're wondering, from my home county! It nearly makes up for us inflicting Buckfast on the world...) I have previously tended to go for the coconut & bean chilli just because I had it once and it was so good! But today I decided to branch out and try the quesadillas. Never been disappointed in this place! The wraps were very flavoursome and filled the hole. We had to wait awhile before we could even consider pudding. But watching other people eat sweeties convinced us to go ahead. So... we shared the chocolate, raspberry and orange torte and the chocolate brownie. Both were divine! I would definitely go to this place just to have a pudding. They were both very chocolatey without being too overly sweet and sickening. This place is fabulous whether for a quick drink, a lazy lunch or a big group dinner. Oh! As a kid I had a phobia about sitting on old sofas. Thankfully today I love wasting away afternoons sprawled on them, provided I have a decent bit of chow and an interesting pint to sup. So the 78 is sitting pretty with its eclectic arrangement of old furniture, varied menu and a good choice of ales,lagers and soft drinks. The staff (or at least the bloke that served us) was really pleasant and I genuinely began to forget about my Saturday shopping experience in town and the fact that Mr Sun prefers to invest all his warmth in the collapsing Eurozone. Sam Smith stout on draft was a welcome change from my usual tipple and the draft alcoholic ginger beer offered something for the non-ale folk. It's a shame I'm a bit far to nip in for a pint on a more regular basis. read more

I've been here for eats, and I've been here for the Dub n Grub. The vegan menu suits me down to the ground, and is unusual and delish - not the same old boring tofu options. Dub n Grub was pretty special -there was a really good atmosphere. A couple of tips if you want to check out the latter event though: - Get there early to get yourself a seat; it's not very comfortable trying to eat your food from your hands as you stand crammed between tables. - Keep your table at all costs; it's not much fun standing crammed between tables to listen to the DJs either! - Enjoy the food - it's good quality for a mass dinner event. Being in the UK for three weeks, subsisting on awful tasting veggie patties and bread, we stumbled into The 78 thinking it was another bar along Argyle Street. Dark, friendly and sweet-smelling ambiance greeted us at the door. The veggie burgers are excellent ... so excellent we came back here twice. It comes with this amazing chutney and delicious chips. After attending an event at the secc we were looking for cold drinks and good grub and my vegan friend suggested here. 78 is owned apparently in the same group that own flying duck and a few other places. I know flying duck offer gluten free so i was hoping 78 do too but sadly not. The only option was the falafal burger without the bun and of course chips. Luckily i wasnt too hungry so a side of chips was fine for me. It was really busy for a saturday but we were attended too quickly and didnt have a long wait for food. Ah, the 78. For a short period of time, this was my favourite bar in Glasgow. For maybe 3 months or so, and then the unhelpful staff, slow service and lack of my favourite tipples drove me away. There's so many good bars around this area, that it was easy to find somewhere else to go. Until last Wednesday, when my friends and I had been for dinner and were wandering indecisively. Someone suggested the 78 and drawn in by the thought of a cosy log fire (yes, I know it's April, but it was baltic) off we went. And I'm so glad I went back. Yes, the staff still sometimes completely ignore you at the bar for very long perioids of time when there's no one else to be seen and yes, thre was a night on called Sing and Drink which immediately instilled fear into my heart - was I about to see karaoke? But it was actually really good. Most of the acts who played seem to be fairly well established and regulars, many of whom also had a great deal of talent, which was somewhat unexpected as open mike nights can vary so dramatically. I really enjoyed the music. The drinks too, as yes, the 78 has expanded their range and now even stock my favourite tippple. Seeing as you asked, it's Sailor Jerry. They do many other new things as well. I have nothing against organic drinks, and do enjoy their organic flavoured beers, but as someone who doesn't really drink beer, I did find the range of spirits a challenge. Sometimes you could really struggle finding something you wanted to drink. I didn't eat there on Wednesday, but if the food is as good as it used to be it's awesome. I remember having not only the best vegan chocolate cake of my life in there, but it was actually in my top 5 of best chocolate cakes ever (vegan or non), which is no mean feat, as despite enjoying vegan main meals, the desserts can be decidedly iffy. The atmosphere hasn't changed, which is what I always loved about the place, and earned it its enviable title of 'favourite pub in Glasgow'. It's comfy, it handles live music really well and it's just got a great ambiance. Can particularly recommend the dub'n'grub night on a Thursday. I've been here a couple of times, and both times the food and atmosphere were great; staff are relaxed but on to it too :) You get such a good, hearty meal, packed with so much veggie goodness, and they have a few good beers and wines to go with it. I'm from the Las Vegas, and I came here a few months ago with my sister who's a vegan. I had the vegan burger, and it was THE BEST vegan burger I ever had, it didn't try to taste like a beef Patty but had it's own unique delicious flavor. Couldn't remember what my sister had cause my burger was so delicious, but she did rage about the vegan cheesecake and how her years as a vegan this was THE BEST she's ever had, and she had to travel all the way here to find it lol. I hoping if one of the managers could contact me I would like to request the recipe for the cheesecake if possible for my sister's birthday. Dog friendly vegan cafe bar. Went with several friends on a wet Monday night. They have a regular menu but also have several special options. They didnt have a salad on that evening but given the horrible weather outside that was possibly a wise decision. Have been going to the 78 for years now and the staff are usually friendly and helpful with nice food. There's sometimes the odd problem like there was on Monday when we werent charged properly. All in all its a good venue for casual food or to sit and get warm when the fire is on! read more

AVOID. Don't eat here. My girlfriend and I ordered two veggie burgers which arrived undercooked and cold. We returned them to the kitchen and they sent out replacements, which were filled with hair. Fucking disgusting. Don't eat here. Great place with both nice expensive tasty beers and nice cheap obligatory beers. There is easy access to the street for smokers but make sure you got someone keepin your seat because it can get pretty cramped on a Sunday night. My mate once ate a chunk of candle there and then puked all over the men's cubicle. He blames it on a sensation/psychosomatic parastite  called "jazz worms" but we all know it was the candle. He was just young, dumb and full of wax, and to his defense he did his best to clean it up. As testament to his cover-up, nobody said a thing, or maybe it was just politeness. Anyways we enjoyed the rest of our Sunday night jazz and left at closing time. Last time I was here I was happy to see the old man who haunts the place. He's got a white beard and sometimes dresses all in white too, just like that old fella in Jurrassic Park. The man's occasional hip-centric gentle dancing is a breath of fresh air compared to some lads I met who complained about people talking over the jazz and how that's "not how it's done". I want to give this place 5 stars, but the service was unbelievably slow and rude. I was in Glasgow for 2 days, and went here twice. The first time was a Saturday, and my friends and I all ordered the brunch. The highlights were the tofu scramble and house made vegan sausages, nicely complimented by the other components of the breakfast. The tattie scones were perfect. Everything was very well seasoned. My bloody mary was tasty, and my friends selected a few interesting beers. The food took about 45 minutes to arrive (for 4 people), but it was so delicious that I wasn't bothered. We liked the place so much that we went back the next day, at the same time, and were told that they had run out of brunch. No apologies, no offers for substitutes-we were simply told that we 'should have called in advance'. Okay. One of my friends was so offended that she left at this point and decided not to eat here. The three of us that remained ordered the veggie burger, quesadilla, and chipotle wrap. We shared the three entrees and were impressed by everything. Great balance of flavors, nice texture to everything. Really hearty and delicious. But again, the food took almost 1 hour to arrive. We complained and received free desserts, which our waitress was NOT excited about. All of them were excellent and served with Swedish Glace ice cream, my personal favorite. I live quite close to the 78, but I've only been a couple of times so far. And to be honest, the first time I was possibly a bit too inebriated to get much of a feel for the place. But I was back recently for a drink, and it is a nice pub. I tend to stick with cider and was sad to see that they'd just had a new tap installed, but the cider itself hadn't arrived yet. I went with a bottle of organic cider instead, which was nice but a bit more than I'd normally spend. The atmosphere is nice though and I'd definitely come back. They have 25% off food on Tuesdays with a student ID, which I haven't taken advantage of, but is a great deal. read more

Was introduced to this vegan/veggie restaurant come pub by a friend who is vegan but i'm not and tbh was a bit apprehensive about it but my fears were blown away the food was great i was advised the falafel platter was nice so i ordered it along with the cajun chips it was nice but it was to much couldn't finish it.They have a great selection of lagers/beers so forth and a relaxed setting i went another time and this time ordered the veggie burger and again delicious along with the cajun fries a must if you go.....I recommend it and thats from a non vegan/veggie read more

I researched this place, walked to it from across the river only for them to close the kitchen at 8:40 because apparently, "it was a crazy day." Then despite getting turned down for dinner I attempted to come for an early dinner the next day at 4:45 and when I arrived the kitchen wasn't open till 5:30 for some reason. We thought we were lucky to find a vegan place so near to where we were staying but this place is great! We loved the food the atmosphere and the music playing in the background. We didn't use the toilets. I had a felafel burger and chips and my partner had a special burger with soup , and both were delicious and very reasonably priced (about £8 for a main course).with vegan restaurants and vegan options often quite scarce this was a delightful find. Loved this amazing little eaterie in Glasgow, tucked away just off Argyle Street. The food we had was fresh, vegetarian and very well prepared, and as we left there was a jazz musician setting up. Selection of drinks was brilliant - lots of good beers, wines and ales. We tried the Wheat Beer and a real ale called The Birds and The Bees - both were very fresh and nice to drink out in the fresh air! There are smoking tables outside, and inside is snug - with a variety of tables, sofas and benches to sit at. It's like being in a very welcoming front room. Definitely recommended if you're veggie or vegan. Food choice was not huge but had a very wide selection. Go there if you can! read more

The 78 is a great Vegetarian restaurant and bar. The menu is creative and the food is delicious whether you are Vegetarian or not. You can also try a well stocked selection of good priced Vegan beers, ciders and wines. The atmosphere is so relaxed and casual and it is a perfect place to sit with a group of friends and for hours and enjoy the drinks and the music that they play. At 9pm they usually have a live jazz band. A nice place to relax at the end of the day. read more

Came here for a meal on Sunday with my family who are all non veggies/vegan and they all loved it! We had some bread and olives to share to start and then I ordered the falafel which was huge, I couldn't finish it all but was so delicious! My brother had the burger and chips and said it was excellent and he loved the chips especially. My dad and sister in law ordered the salad of the day which was also huge and they loved it too. My mum had the sausage casserole and I tried a bit of hers, it was a bit bland and i don't think she was massively into it, but she was hungry so it filled a gap. We ordered a few desserts which I never usually do because most places it's pretty hard to get anything vegan so I jumped at the chance to have sticky date pudding, it was good, but I stole some of my brothers brownie with ice cream, and everyone agreed that it was amazing! Next time I will definitely be getting that! The place was rammed and I was so glad that we booked ahead. Come early too because they start serving food at 5 and we came at 6 and there was already no soup, by the time we ordered things were being wiped off the board and by the time we finished there was only one thing left and the kitchen shut around 8. This review is based on my second visit to the 78, it had come recommended by some friends as a lovely place to visit. My first visit was just for drinks and I liked the atmosphere, but we weren't able to stay long. This time, with vegetarian friends visiting, we thought we would pay it a proper visit. Going on a weeknight it wasn't busy which was nice as we were a rather large group, but even still the service was absolutely terrible. No one ever came by, we ordered our drinks at the bar. The server finally brought one menu for over 10 people and we had to go get the rest on our own. We had to ask to order and she skipped a few people during the process. At the end they would not take off a student discount for those who were students (which was advertised) and it was a huge hassle. Service in Glasgow varies, but this is the worst I have been treated in a restaurant yet. The food was decent and the prices were good, but not enough to bring me back. There are plenty of other more pleasant places to be in the Finnieston area. read more
