The 521 tavern is basically a neighborhood bar, everyone here seems to know everyone else (except me). I was made to feel welcome both days that I've eaten here. The music is my style (old rock) some may consider it a bit loud, but that's just people having fun. I ordered the filet today, it was heavenly. I have had easily a couple hundred fillets, this one was probably in the top eight. It was super tender, perfectly cooked, and the sauce was the perfect touch. This pub is the perfect slice of blue-collar Americana. It's very casual, low-key, and cozy. There were a large number of tables with parties of 10 or more. The service was top-notch despite that! The bar tender fella on the patio was especially nice and super attentive despite being totally slammed on a Thursday night! We got the fried mushrooms appetizer with homemade ranch. It was excellent! Very crisp and tasty! The salad was good. The pizza with onion and basil was nicely made. Thin and crispy. And the Cowboy dinner with a 20 oz bone-in ribeye was perfect! It came with a baked potato and side salad. It made a few patrons at the outdoor bar jealous! We sat outside on the patio before sunset. Everyone seemed to be having a good time there. I highly recommend visiting this pub if you're looking for a casual atmosphere. The food was great, and the drinks were affordable. read more

We were in Madison for the weekend and saw the reviews on this as we were sitting at another establishment around the corner. So glad we came in! We were greeted and served almost immediately. Decided to try the fried chicken (to go) but also had a patty melt to tie us over. This place was so good we came back the next day for vittles! Let's start by saying this is more bar than restaurant in my opinion. And sadly makers mark is not on the menu, but once you get past that the burger. At least the bacon burger was amazing. The fries were very good but I heard the potato wedges were better and the ranch is made in house. Sadly I have had way too many bourbons before I got here so after the Elijah Craig and the burger and fries even if they have dessert I am not sure I should or could eat it. But half drunk or not I can still taste very good seasoning in the burger and the fries were seasoned and hot. Also who could fault two very hard working bartenders, and they were not bad looking at all which doesn't hurt ever. Not sure if the music was from the radio or a web service but it was very good bar music. Worth it. Yes. And I will be back. read more

My family and I have been traveling and were in need of a place to eat. Yelped food places and saw good reviews for 528 Tavern. The place was nice & busy for a Monday night at about 8 pm. The waitresses were wonderful and very helpful getting tables together for our group size. When ordering I asked our waitress her opinion on a few items and I veeery much appreciated her honesty in directing us through the menu. She also informed me that the owner was in the kitchen and that the food would be that much better tonight. I was thrilled. When the food finally came out, it was quite the feast. Traveling thru from Texas had been on the road all day and starving. Found this place on yelp and glad we did! So being a Texan we are hesitant to order steak out however hubby was wanting one and they did not disappoint. Baked potato was also on point. I heard about this place on FB and the weekend seafood specials are what lured us out here. Yes this is a bar and a restaurant and we found it to be clean and decent size. We went early (5:00) on Saturday and glad we did. When we arrived there were a few tables seated and when we left at 7:00 the place was full. We ordered drinks and then dinner. One of my friends got the shrimp dinner, the other got the fish fry and I got 1 lb crab legs. No one was disappointed. They loved their dinners and said the coleslaw was the best they ever had. My salad was fresh and a nice variety of vegetables, loaded baked potato yummy and crab legs did not disappoint. Service was good. They have a nice bar/patio and we look forward to returning when the weather warms up. Will be back again, prices very reasonable, good food and service! read more

I stopped in with my wife and family member. My wife and I sat down, and only one other couple was present and eating. I thought perfect not busy at all. Third to 4 minutes pass and we see no one, and another couple goes to the bar. This place is a small bar with seating for dinner and lunch orders. The waitress comes out of the back and attends the people at the bar. Hmm well she was in that are and I can it was easier for her to get started there, rather than the couple that came in first. The waitress came over to ask about drinks and she seemed a little rushed. In a couple minutes when we were ready she was back and I started and asked for potato skins, but I only wanted them with diced jalapenos on them. My daughter got me hooked and cant see them with out them. So I asked do you have jalapenos? NOW I'm an extremely honest person and my question did not come out quite right. I thought I asked if you have jalapeno poppers for some reason, but in fact I asked for peppers. She looked at me bewildered and I thought maybe they did not have jalapenos and I would have to change my order. As I was actually explaining I wanted diced jalapenos after she said curtly yes we have peppers, She then said to the affect let me stop you right there, I am running the bar, the grill and she said she was busy, what do you want? NOW,, I can be a very coarse person, and my review of myself most of the time will be more descriptive of how to treat someone poorly. After her comment I was shocked. I looked at my wife and family member and they were speechless. Not a common event. I think they thought I was going to give a piece of my mind right then. BUT I just sad and kind of laughed inside and thought no way will I ever come here to spend my money. We placed orders and just after she left we quickly decided we should not stay. I quickly went to the back where she was and said I'm sorry but we were leaving. She was shocked. Another issue, as she had no concept of her manners. I said, I have NEVER been treated so rudely and I think it is best we go elsewhere. We had purchased 2 soft drinks and left a $5 on the table for the drinks. We then went to the place on 84 in the little strip at the square. It was excellent. I'm not sure how she constitutes what I saw as busy? I'm not from the country and have seen busy places. But for her it was busy, then ok. Why was she by herself? Is this a normal situation the owner/manager puts her in? Or just a fluke? I of course I have no idea. I went in with high exp,expectations, other reviews on this app. Seems friendly......my drink order was taken quickly, but I was never asked if I wanted another. I ordered some dinner, seriously was good. Baked potatoe could have cooked a little longer. Salad never came. For the most part, local familiar faces seemed to be getting service. Wow. I went to pick up my order and thank goodness I decided to get takeout instead of eating in. The music is playing so loud you can't even hear yourself think. People have to scream at the person next to them in hopes that they can even hear them. I haven't even gotten my food yet but it's already taking longer then that said. Honestly very disappointed. Heard the waitress/server cuss loudly at her boss within five minutes of me being here. Hopefully Madison gets some more restaurants soon because no way is this family friendly or even an enjoyable establishment whatsoever. Still waiting. Ok let me say with absolute love and respect that this is a local dive bar. And I love dive bars. Place was clean, small menu. I had a chicken quesadilla which was really good and my companion had the outlaw burger and he said it was good. We also got the potato wedges with the homemade ranch. Yum. And then there was Alexis. She is a manager/bartender. Alexis gave great service and was very congenial. It was a Monday night and we were the only strangers in the place, but all the locals were friendly. A lady at the next table piped up with a shout out about the potato wedges. If you are a foodie snob I recommend that you get over it and try this place out if you are in the area. read more

We lucked out in finding The 528 Tavern while coming home from a day of shopping. The staff is incredibly friendly, they truly make you feel at home. The food was delicious! They offer the best chicken wings we have found outside of Buffalo (and that's saying a lot coming from someone who grew up in Buffalo). Have not been there in a while, came in with a group of friends. Overall not bad for a dive bar. Wings were good and so where the burgers. There was some confusion about our order and some guy I think his name was Scooter, made problems way worse. He caused much confusion and was rude to us and coworkers, he appeared intoxicated. Anyway, they should replace Scooter because its a nice little place with decent food when they get the order right. I would go back despite the confusion. read more
