We went to THC (The Hops Company) to celebrate a friend's job promotion. It was a Sunday and I was excited because I know they do brunch and live music. The times got changed for the party so we missed brunch and live music. I still enjoyed the music played over the speakers- it was a nice mix. We stopped at the bar before we headed outside to find our party. The bartenders were super busy however kept an eye out for who was next and kept the drinks coming. I tried a margarita which was lovely. Husband had a beer. Later in the night, he tried a blue slushie drink which everyone wanted because of the light blue color. I had a Diet Coke later on for $2.50. We haven't been to THC since 2019 or longer. We saw how much has been changed and added on to the property. We parked in the back parking lot so we saw the wedding venue area with the tent and bars from the stairway. It's so well done. The outdoor area off the original THC bar site is still private yet encourages you to mingle. There were parties of all kinds with babies and toddlers, single couples and a party happening inside. No one seemed bothered or in the way as the tables are spaced far enough away. Picnic tables outside are set around corn hole games and a gazebo. There are also open fire pits which would be so nice during upcoming fall evenings. It was a 90° day so we didn't sit in that particular area this visit. THC also has a Zuppardi's window to order pizza. We went simple with a plain cheese. It was delicious. My husband's family adores the original West Haven Zuppardi's location so we are quite familiar with their pizza offerings. Other members of our party got fries. They were surprised how large the order was for $6. Four people split one order and they each had plenty. The THC staff came around to bring in our glasses, plates and sheet pans. Props to the staffer that stood on a table to help our party take pictures. It was much appreciated. We have got to come more often! 4 stars read more

Came here for happy hour on Friday night and it was packed! Parking was a bit of a struggle but thankfully they have overflow parking in the back. I ordered a flight of cider and really enjoyed that. My favorite was the strawberry cider -- this was so good! Not overly sweet either. My hubby ordered the THC cocktail, which wasn't really my favorite. Since we often see the parking lot full, we decided to check out this bar and figured it had to be worthwhile since they offer Zuppardi's. It is a great hang out for very young millennials who enjoy cold craft brews and delicious pizzas. There is food at the bar and plenty of outdoor seating. They have live performances, sports and bar games in the evenings. Evidently, they even hold weddings there. It definitely attracts a local loud crowd. Really large outdoor patio area. Plenty of parking with an additional lot. Great beer selection, plus cocktails and food too. Patio area is immaculate, very clean. Modern, lovely landscaping, perfect for those Instagram group photos, or a beautiful spot to admire the foliage with friends or family. It even has a small scenic waterfall and gazebo, heated fireside tables, benches, and high top table area. The only negative thing I can say about the outdoor patio is that they have a smoking section that's really close to the seating area. It should be moved somewhere like the other side of the building. The inside is big and open, and again really clean and has some games and large tables and other seating options for groups. Overall worth a trip to check out. Highly recommend trying out the SweetWater 420 on tap and the pickle pizza! *Tip* We couldn't sync our bill when we visited. I came here with my family. my daughter and wife couldn't eat the food. It was horrible. The menu was changed for the worse (we've been here before). They have changed their menu to either mediocre Mexican or over seasoned whatever you order, the pizza (Zuppardi's) is still on the menu and good. For the first time in my life in a restaurant/bar, I requested a sip of one of the beers they serve at the bar to see if I like the taste and they told me NO! The space is a huge selling point for this place. Lots of room, both inside and out. They have Zuppardi's pizza, which is always a good decision, as well as some other snacking foods. There are a ton of beers, but also a full bar. The staff is always super friendly, and they even had high chairs for the little ones. Very busy Sunday around 1:00. We weren't expecting so many people at that time. Parking was a little tricky, but we found a tight spot. Nice large place with long tables to share with other groups. It was just two of us, so we were able to find a spot. Went up to the bar and ordered two flights of beer. They do not make their own beer there, but have plenty of local beers on tap and it's nice that they do flights, so you can try a bunch. We only had an hour, so we didn't have time to try the food. From what I saw other people eating, it looked really good. We will definitely have to come back with friends when we have more time. read more

We were in town visiting family. It is a very casual place. Seating is not the most comfortable. Only SNAK and ZUPPARDI'S APIZZA were opened when we were there. We got two pizzas. They were both delicious and good crust. The garlic fries were so flavorful. I couldn't stop eating the fries. The large nachos was gigantic and piled high with great ingredients. So, my sister brought me here because, quite frankly, I love craft beer. And, I like to eat,too! It's set up like a bier hall. Picnic tables that you can share with other patrons, couch seating in front of a fireplace, large outdoor area for nicer weather. There are different areas to get food. Came here for Fathers Day 2019 and it didn't disappoint! With a sizable beer collection as well as drinks it's got something for everyone. They have 3 different food places right inside, a pizza place, a crepe place, and another spot which we got nachos from. The nachos were pretty blah, and we ended up tossing a good amount of them. The pizza was good though! My only complaint is how LOUD it is when there's music being played- the area isn't set up for loud music- it's too small and there's too much going on for the acoustics to be tolerable. They are making so much money and they can't invest a little into the bathrooms?? The ladies rooms were filthy, no toilet seats, toilets barely flushed. Just gross. Then we ordered brats and kraut. We get it. No sauerkraut. We go and ask for some. The woman gets our bill and never says anything to us as we wait. So I went back up and she said, oh you never paid for it. You need to go back and order and pay for it. (except we did order it) . Meanwhile there's a line to order food (again) and our food is getting cold. How about admitting you screwed up and hand me the sauerkraut that costs 10 cents which you're charging $3 for. They even charge for popcorn which most bars provide for free. Also, they are breaking every Covid rule with that many people there. No distancing. No one really cleaning anything. Hundreds of people. Not sure how they're getting away with it. I'm giving them 2 stars because the pizza was amazing. But next time I'll just go to Zuppardis and not deal with the filth and poorly trained staff. read more

They have an enormous number and variety of different types of drinks and flavors - huge variety in drink menu. I love their DJ and dance nights. I never write reviews but my experience here about a month and a half ago warranted this. My partner had previously written a one star review regarding our experience (nothing inappropriate, disrespectful, or rude was written) and they took his review down. He discussed the aforementioned $15 per person cover fee to even enter the area and how it was not included anywhere on their website. So we had brought his parents out for a nice trivia night and we were astonished when we were told it would be $60 for us to enter, even if we weren't going to drink. The only reason we went in is because of how far we had driven to get there. We got the "included drink with admission" and left immediately after. That being said, I would not return. My partner would not return, his parents would not return and I would absolutely advice anyone thinking of going here to just spend your money elsewhere. read more

So after visiting the website and seeing some hype about how great THC was, we decided to take a trip to try it out. Now I will grant that this was during the time that inside gatherings were still limited, but I am still greatly disappointed. To start with, there is a $15 admission charge. This is not mentioned at all on their website. Now you get your first beer with that, but that doesn't balance at all. I have never been hit with a cover charge for walking into a beer bar with no entertainment. Then on top on that, their "Hoppy Hour" which they still advertise on their website is not honored. And their extensive food menu which they still advertise on their website is non existent. I understand that there is limited abilities right now, but most other places I know have edited their websites to update their information to reflect the current situation. The beer selection is limited by their current set up, so there are only 8 beers, as opposed to their claims of having an extensive beer selection. However, their online list of beers is inaccurate - it had not been updated, and even after visiting it has not been updated. They are also expensive at $8 a pint. Now I don't know if the next couple of things are something they have no control over or not. 1 - They charge sales tax on the full price of the admission fee. So its not just $15, its $15 plus tax. Again, something I have never run into before. 2 - if you choose a percentage to tip on your bill, it calculates the percentage AFTER the tax is added, which is incorrect. Tip is normally calculated pre tax. But the customer should be aware of these things. The beer garden and accompanying inside space to order beer looks more like an event space for weddings or such. The tables under the main tent are large round banquet tables that are made to sit 10-12 people. The chairs likewise are the kind you would find in a banquet hall. The interior area where there is not seating is decorated as a event space. There are high top tables outside the tent, some under individual umbrellas, a lawn with circles on it to either sit in the grass or bring your own chair, and a lower area with more seating. The staff was inconsistent. There were some who were quite friendly and pleasant, and others who were not. Overall, I was completely unimpressed. For a place that hypes itself so hard on its website it does not live up at all to its expectations. There are other places nearby where there is great beer, a better atmosphere, no cover charge, better prices and and a friendlier staff. I'll give them another chance once they are fully open, but right now, I would be amiss if I recommended them to anyone. read more

Hops is easily my favorite bar in my area. That being said, my reasoning probably won't make sense to most people in my age group. Second...yes they have a good beer selection but if someone in your party fancies red wine they will serve it to you cold! Third, their food is INCREDIBLY overpriced. Zuppardis is awfully overpriced and a half tray of nachos costs $20. If I owned Zuppardis, I'd pull out of this partnership to avoid tarnishing my name.....but these are the same pizza people who were trying to charge 4-5 dollars for a slice of pizza off their food truck. Fourth, their bartenders are rude and not very customer service oriented ESPECIALLY the brunette working the bar in the afternoon of 10/7. They only get one star because they have radeberger. This review is for THC only. This place is decent. The atmosphere reminds me of German Oktoberfest. The venue is HUGE, plenty of space for large parties. The tap list usually has a few uncommon finds but largely has mainstream crafts. They don't really let you sample beers, so you better know that you'll like something or you're stuck with it. Bartenders are nothing to write home about and it was counter service only, at least when I went. Not sure if they ever do table service. Prices are OK...usually $1-2 more per pour than my local pub. They also have live music, and plenty of games. They say they were voted best beer garden in CT, not sure if that was by default. Really want to give this place more than 3, but I just don't get that feeling when I go in there. I have never felt welcomed by staff, perhaps if the upped their customer service a bit it would be a four. read more

So happy we stopped by here while spending time in the area! We heard great things and they lived up to all of it! You cannot make a reservation but there is tons of available seating outside, under tents, out on the lawn or on a gravel picnic bench area. NOTE: you pay $15 a person to get in but that covers your first drink, so that was a good deal to us! The wait staff for drinks and food are separate and will come around fulfilling orders for everyone. I wouldn't say the beer is anything crazy unique but I'm not a beer snob so I enjoyed a fat tire. Great new addition to the area. It's a giant beer hall with plenty of tables to find your own little nook with friends. Parking was a little tight in the main lot when we got there around 5 on a Saturday (and the place was maybe half full inside) but I was told there was a secondary lot available. It was totally full by around 6:30 and it actually gets really loud in there. Getting your beers or wine or mixed drinks was easy. The wine was a little 'eh' so I may try a mixed drink next time. The food here actually stole the show for me. The Zuppardi's pizza was great but their Cobb Salad was even better. Not only was the salad incredible but it also came with 4 slices of grilled bread that were outstanding. Sounds crazy, but...this might be my new salad spot. I was very curious about the dill pickle pizza. I just called Zuppardi's and they said they don't serve that at their West Haven location so I'll be coming back to THC to give that a whirl as well. read more

PANDEMIC BE DAMNED AT THE HOPS COMPANY! I usually enjoy The Hops Company as a great, low-stress place for friends to gather. But that was pre-pandemic. I was very disappointed with my experience on a Saturday afternoon. Unbeknownst to us, when we went to grab a drink and food at 2PM, the place was still serving brunch for another hour. Sounds like fun, right?! Wrong. There were glass screens up to separate parties at long tables, but that was the extent of the (enforced) precautions. Waiting in line at the bar was fine in the "before time," but with the pandemic, lines of people screaming to each other with masks pulled down and seriously crowding you was not fun. Especially all the young brunchers, who were clearly overserved. It was anxiety-provoking, in fact, and made the otherwise tasty beer unenjoyable. At least one employee was monitoring and directing people not to crowd others at the bar (which I appreciated), but it doesn't make much of a different when the line snakes from the bar right next to your table. There has to be a better way! We left as soon as we got our food served in a to-go box. Lesson learned: avoid Saturday brunch time. And maybe avoid The Hops Company all together until they become pandemic-compliant. read more

Went here on a Weekday night with my wife and her parents. We ordered nachos, wings, garlic fries, and two pizzas. The Nachos were a great size and good flavor. The garlic fries were extremely bland with no garlic flavor on them. If I had you try one and didn't tell you they were garlic fries, you would have never even known. *WARNING* I had a terrible experience here! I'll explain why: Before I came down on a Saturday evening I called and asked if they had anything gluten-free to drink. The girl said she would check, and none of the staff, after 3 minutes of asking around, still did not know if they had anything gluten free to drink. The owner has represented this place to have gluten free options and a "gluten free menu." There is NO GLUTEN FREE MENU and the staff DIDN'T EVEN KNOW OF ANY GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS. There are NO MANAGERS WORKING at this place. Only subordinate staff taking orders. The chef refused to come out to talk to me about gluten free options that he could make for me. One of the staff told me that they do not make gluten free fries, even though I found the restaurant claiming that they do. THIS PLACE IS A CLUB, NOT A RESTAURANT. It is dark inside and the music is so obnoxiously loud that you need to yell to the staff to make an order. There are 3 separate places to order, for drinks, pizza, and sides. All in different areas in the establishment. There are lines of people that get in your way at each station and there are no servers to bring you anything. There are drinks that people spilled on the floor and I had to walk through it to get to my table. The table I was assigned to sit at was already occupied by other people. Why even assign seating? You don't have a choice where you can sit here! You have to pick up your own food orders and bring them all the way over to your table through crowds of people. Serving yourself at your own table, no different than you would do in McDonalds. There are gravel rocks outside on the ground that you have to walk through to get to the other seating outside in the dark. If you have any issues, there is no management working, just a few bouncers and some ignorant staff at the ordering stations, which shows this place has no structure or responsible staff members who care about your experience here. Again, this place is a club, with a crowd that consisted mostly of people who probably are just old enough to drink. The prices are way too high, such as $36 for nachos and 10 wings. On top of that, the staff at the ordering station also asks you for a 20% tip on the computer screen when they spin it around to you, after charging you $15 dollars per person to get in. Just for my few drinks and 2 appetizers, it came out to about $50 dollars! This place is a rip-off! Shame on you! It is my opinion that you find a better place to eat and go with your friends. You can eat 2 large steak dinners with the tip paid at Texas Roadhouse, rather than come here and get ripped off and treated like garbage! I really used to love THC but yesterday they exemplified why I will NEVER return again. At all times during our hour stay, they completely disregarded every COVID rule set forth by the state. No social distancing, no one enforcing mask mandates, parties of 12+, and no capacity limiting. People were blatantly walking around without a mask and even ordering without a mask. Aside from this, their beer menu is literally awful now. Their liquor distributors clearly have them in a chokehold and are forcing generic mediocre beer on them. Come on, SweetWater 420? It is extremely sad that this place has fallen so far from where they started, as a CRAFT BEER garden. Greed has certainly gotten the best of this place and it's sad. read more
