I went to Thalia Hall last night to see the Eric Andre standup show, hosted by The Onion and AV Club. I can safely say I will NEVER go back.
I give the place some credit - it's a cool building that seems clean, trendy, and overall a pleasant place to be.
My issue is more with the show itself. I know part of it has to do with my taste in humor, but I had hoped Thalia Hall would have some sort of standard as far as what kind of show people get when they are paying a full ticket price.
The opening act was Brian Babylon. I can sum up his act in two words: sex jokes. Again, not my type of humor. But considering all the comedians in the world, that's the best you can start with?
Luckily (though unprofessionally), Babylon had to stop his set halfway through because he was sick. Brody Stevens took over, who made it clear he was called in last-minute and had nothing prepared. To sum up his act in one word: shouting. It was like Henry Rollins, only pointless.
So here we are, halfway through the night, at a show meant for a comedy festival hosted by two huge humor sites, and all I've heard were penis jokes and some yelling. Oh, and when I say halfway, I mean halfway.
Let me continue with Eric Andre's performance next. He stepped out, and right off the bat, told us he hadn't done standup since 2009 and that he was super high. You would have thought he'd prepare some new material considering this, but nope. Several of the jokes were repeats of his material from The Eric Andre Show. Most of everything else was total babbling. He maybe had two good jokes.
The audience was really annoying and kept doing stuff that should have gotten them kicked out of the hall: texting, taking pictures, and interrupting the show with shouting (which included people shouting that they have drugs and another shouting their address). Security did absolutely nothing. Half of Eric's set was interacting and provoking these people, which made them more annoying. It barely got any laughs.
At the very end of the set, he told everyone he was going to s*** on stage. He pulled down his pants, showed his butt and male parts, told one more joke, and that was it.
All in all, the show was supposed to start at 9PM, didn't actually start until 9:15, and the whole show, including openers, lasted just an hour.
Now, I'm an adult, and I can handle a night of bad humor, annoying crowds, and a penis. I'm upset because, for $20, I saw nothing but 1 hour of unprofessionalism. For $20, I saw a sick comedian with dick jokes, an unprepared comedian who just shouted, and a well-known comedian that couldn't have been less prepared for a stand-up gig. And friendly reminder, this was ALL hosted by THE ONION and AV CLUB.
For $20, I hoped Thalia Hall would have some standards, that they'd take more consideration into who they're putting on stage, and that security would do their job, especially when the audience interruption is taking over half of the main act's routine.
Incredibly disappointed, and I'm never going back. read more
