My husband and I watched an improv show last night. We bought the tickets day of, when we realized we had no plans for the evening. Buying tickets on their site is so easy! Also, don't forget to add a donation! We got to the theater about 25 minutes before show time, they have a big lobby area with seating as you wait. There's also a small bar, with assorted mixed drinks, beer, cider and wine. The staff there is so nice, they let me try something before I committed to it. The theatre itself is large with different types of seating. I prefer the high top tables in the back row. The show started a bit later than advertised but it was all good. The show was so funny! And of course in true improv style, they had the audience participation by asking for prompts and input. I would 100% go back! read more

I'm not sure I can even type words without falling into what might be mistaken as hyperbole. I had the luck to stumble upon tickets for a one night only show of Dorff, Jagodowski, and Messing. That's Kevin Dorff (writer for Conan), TJ Jagodowski (umm legend for more than Sonic commercials), and Susan Messing (the spitfire that spits the hottest fire (and who I had the good fortune of studying under at the Annoyance)). The show was phenomenal. $20 for 45 minutes of pure, smart, incredible comedy. With the comedy 20 feet away! I saw in the back at a high top with a cider and a mocktail. Drink service comes through halfway through the show or you can order before obviously. A few snacks are available. This is such a cool venue that more people should be talking about. read more

We so enjoyed the hospitality and venue. Easy to visit and purchase tickets in advance online with very small fees. You can also buy tickets at the door as long as the show is not sold out. There's a pre show area with a bar and reasonably priced drinks which we enjoyed. The show itself was not to our liking, but we will definitely try again soon with another title. Sorry, but this is was the dumbest show I have ever seen in my life. If my family would've let me I would have left after 5 mins. It was not funny at all. Other people were laughing, but I'm not sure why. It was super cringe. I wish some would have been honest in these reviews. read more

DON'T take a class with them!!! Got sick and ask if I could move my registration to the next session and they refused. Said they could give me a discount for next session but wouldn't change it for me. Pretty much wasted my money. I've heard Second City is better anyway I just wanted to go someplace closer. read more

I've taken an Intro to Improv class there and finally just got to go to an improv/skit show as well. Both were excellent. Looking forward to going again. Bar is maybe $1-$2 / drink more than you'd expect--$8 for Jim Beam mixed drink for instance. Seems steep if they are trying to attract college crowd. I'm happy to support them just consider dropping in to Jimmy's beforehand if you're out boozin. read more

Chicago Theological Seminary hosted an event at The Revival this past weekend and it was my first time in the venue that I've passed on several occasions. The Revival is located alongside several restaurants and a Starbucks. There's a good amount of street parking in the area - about what you would expect for Hyde Park. I quite enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and look forward to attending other events as I'm sure the space can be transformed to accommodate several types of events. read more

I think I have a clue as to why there were only about half a dozen people here on a Saturday night (validating the hell out of each other, as The Onion once wrote about a girls' night out). I came in off the street on a whim and ended up getting the hell out of there in epic disgust (and leaving my groceries, but they were just a supply of oatmeal cookies for a friend; I hope the staff find some consoling use for them). The first performer I saw was wonderful, talking about a (perhaps real, maybe fictive) bulleted list his parents had presented him with when he was a teenager that read like a radically reduced Victorian manual for the conduct of life. He had charm, humility and physical presence. They should give him a whole hour and promote him. After he left the stage it all degenerated into 30-somethings whining out aging and their families and making rude comments about the latter. When the videos came on and someone was displaying photos of a relative's medical devices, with mocking commentary, I had to leave. I mean I REALLY had to leave, and I'm not all that sensitive. This place should drop the mantle of the Compass Players and become a straight-up Hyde Park dive bar. It would be more fun, cheaper, and infinitely more entertaining. read more

This place is actually the birth place of improv back in 1955. They just opened 3 months to 'revive' it up here in Hyde Park. They offer classes and even summer camps. I came here for a private event. Great venue. read more

My review is based on my experience taking a class here and not the quality of the shows. I just completed a level I improv class there and I had a fantastic time. Jeff is a very knowledgeable and experienced instructor with the patience of a saint. Quality instruction, good fun, and a diverse group of classmates in both age, race, and socioeconomic status. I look forward to taking future classes. Also cheaper than the more well known improv joints. read more

Unfortunately, while I've seen a few shows at this venue, they've seemed to go downhill over the years. Compared to a Zanies or even some of the bigger clubs (Second City, etc) that have kept bringing out creative new shows, most at what I've seen recently here has been pandering to try to get headlines. I don't really care about the titles, but the shows haven't ended up being very good. Still giving it two stars because they have a pretty good parking situation. read more

Fantastic gem in Hyde Park! Jazzomedy features incredible comedy and spectacular jazz artists. The venue itself is very spacious, wonderfully kept, and great staff. Cant be beat. If you are ever bored on the weekends and you happen to be in the south side, come here! You wont regret it! read more

Great theater. Good variety of shows and very friendly atmosphere. It's also very spacious with low lighting that makes it a chill place. If you live on the South side, it's nice to have comedy nearby, whereas the North side usually gets all the attention for theater. It's nice to mix it up. read more

I visited this comedy club the other week, and was blown away. The quality of the acts is outstanding. The improv is top-notch as well. I am looking forward to going back there next month on the first weekend of Saturday for their show. I attended the Lil Rel pop up show this week at the Revival and it was a great time. It was my first time at this comedy club and I loved it. The employees are very nice and helpful. The club itself is very clean, super affordable and there isn't a bad seat in the place. I look forward to visiting again soon. read more

So I wrote a review in May that was less than stellar, and then the owner, John, worked with me to make everything right. John made the venue available for rental and we had a great party. The venue is perfect, and the staff was very helpful and easy to work with. They helped with the set-up and break down. The event turned out perfect. I've been to the Revival a few times since it opened and each time it gets better. It's the best deal in Hyde Park for UofC students looking to grab a beer ($5 for good draft beers, $2 for a can of PBR) and see some comedy ($5 tickets with your UofC ID). As with all improv it can be hit or miss but for the most part they do a great job, and the quality is up there with shows I've seen at Second City and iO on the north side. It's exactly the kind of place that Hyde Park has needed for years. read more
