WARNING: Thai Moon is carry out orders only & cash only so come prepared. This is a SMALL business so be specific with your pick up time and don't expect to be chatting up a storm with the staff here when picking up your food. They are working as fast as they can to get fresh food out and take orders. Please be mindful of this. All orders on the menu are custom made to your spice level from mild to Thai level hot. MOON EGG ROLLS These egg rolls were so deliciously fresh and crunchy. Every bite was full of minced pork, shredded carrots, cabbage and vermicelli. Dipped with their homemade sweet chili sauce, just divine! SHRIMP SPRING ROLLS Rice paper rolled with vermicelli, fresh greens, carrots, cilantro, and shrimp. Dip into the housemate peanut sauce for the best bite. Every bite was so crunchy and fresh, just delicious. The rolls were rolled nice and tight, zero spillage. Very impressed with how stuffed these were. So yummy. DRUNKEN NOODLES We got a medium heat and Thai level hot. Oh my lord these were tasty! We chose chicken for our protein. I love drunken noodles and Thai Moon's style is veggie and flavor heavy, just how I like it. Chewy, flat rice noodles, onions, tomatoes, chilis, garlic and fresh basil leaves; every bite was just an explosion of saucy flavors and textures. In hindsight, we should've just gotten medium because the Thai level one had us SWEATING and chugging our drinks. Delicious nonetheless, but note to self stick with medium if you like spicy, but want to enjoy your meal. Portions are generous, so you'll have enough for leftovers to enjoy the next day. She prepares all orders herself, so call between 11-3 the day before to place your order for a specific pick up time. We scheduled a 4:30 pick up, so we could enjoy our meal on the 2hr Cedar Ferry ride back to the mainland. The Thai Spring rolls and Moon egg rolls didn't disappoint! Both were delicious with Moon's homemade sweet chili sauce. Pad Thai with shrimp or chicken were a hit too! Disgrace to beautiful Ocracoke and its nice people/businesses. Rude behavior from the owner/chef! Our group of 6 adults and 4 kids explored the island and met many nice people. Our return ferry was at 7:00 PM. We saw a market place with a small Thai restaurant, a grocery place, and a tea shop (different shops). The market had plenty of outside seating. When we entered, an unwelcoming lady (the owner) came to take our order. They only offered carry-out and no indoor seating. We ordered quickly, but then realized they only accepted cash. We managed to get cash and completed the order. We asked about the wait time and learned it would take nearly an hour. Realizing we might not have enough time to eat and board the ferry, we apologetically asked if she could fast-track the order. She asked if we wanted the money back with an angry face. We canceled the order immediately even before she pass the order to kitchen, she threw the change on the counter, murmuring something in another language. We bought pizza nearby, along with tea and snacks from Moonraker. While finishing our meal, the Thai restaurant owner angrily confronted us about sitting in the shared market area, despite our legitimate purchases. This unpleasant experience left us and our kids feeling very sad. As we were about to leave, she proudly told the tea shop owner that she had yelled at us. We didn't understand her rudeness and left without any further confrontation. We usually support small businesses in all our travels, but this was one of the worst experiences we've had with a business owner. I'm proud of our family and friends for handling it maturely. This place could easily be 5 stars, but for the complete lack of friendly staff on our two interactions with them. No smiles. No hospitality. Zero warmth. Zero. That being said, the food is excellent and worth overlooking the lack of people skills. Cash only establishment and they prefer you call ahead for everything. We have been coming to Thai moon each year for close to a decade. This is a family run operation which now seems to be a single person show according to their Facebook. Food is fantastic even after the hour+ travel time off the island. Our family normally gets the curry but their pad Thai is excellent as well. The people complaining about the food frankly have a stick up their a$$. And yes, the food may not be basement bargain prices but you are on an island on vacation ordering from the one Thai spot in town, if you are mad about that I don't know what to tell you. This was a takeout. Got the order in late and was so hungry. Really looking forward to a great meal. We come from an area with excellent Thai food. Both wife and I ordered a fried rice dish, mine being the most expensive item on the menu. I asked for mine with medium spice, there was none. My order also came with two egg rolls, I asked for the house egg rolls with pork. Got veggie spring rolls. Both of our dishes were simply bland and I mean very bland. A HUGE disappointment. Best Thai food I've ever had, the owner was the only one working tonight and they do prefer you pay with cash and call ahead. I saw many complaints about the staff not being friendly; however, she was plenty friendly to me, even when I arrived at the wrong time to pick up my food. Being a business owner myself, pick up times and schedules are important, so I get it. I got egg rolls and pad see eiw and it was so flavorful and the eggrolls weren't greasy at all and the veggies inside tasted so fresh. Last night my wife and I got the fresh vegetarian spring rolls. We also ordered the green curry, the drunken noodles and pad Thai. We spoke with the chef when we ordered and she was only too happy to make everything vegan. She used tofu or added additional vegetables in place of meat. The flavors of each dish were wonderful and distinctly different from one another. We couldn't decide which dish we like the best. Each of us liked a different item the best. We have gotten food here many times in the past and it has never disappointed. I look forward to it every year that we visit. read more

A little late but we were willing to wait because we remember it being good a few years ago. We got a drunken noodle and a tofu pad Thai. Visiting Thai Moon has always been one of the highlights of our annual trip to Ocracoke. So much so that when my wife and I got married on the island, we asked them to cater the reception. Don't be deterred by their tiny, unassuming take-out window and cash-only policy; Thai Moon prepares some of the finest Thai Food you will find anywhere. Ingredients are fresh and perfectly spiced, the flavors diverse and rich. In particular, try the Tom Kha Gai soup, any of the green curry dishes, and the Ginger Fish. Although I live near DC and eat Thai food regularly, I find very, very few few restaurants produce the same terrific quality that we've seen in every dish we've had at Thai Moon. The owners told me they hadn't done much catering before our reception, but they did a fantastic job. Guests universally complimented the food, even those who had never eaten Thai dishes before. The owners were responsive, low-key, and incredibly helpful. This is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, and I only wish I lived close enough that I could be eating their food more regularly. read more

This place is an absolute edifice to mediocrity. The chicken pad thai is consistently bad and usually cold. It is also extremely over priced. it is really strictly a carry out place as the is really no seating and also the owners small dog barks so much and so frequently that its unpleasant just waiting for your food to be made. for being a take out place and sucking, it is incredibly overpriced. for the price I would rather go to a sit down dinner or lunch anywhere else on the island and just save money. By the way, not that I care that much about how sanitary it is to have a dog in the kitchen at all times, its a health code violation and being shut down because of it would not be unwarranted. read more

Now that we are in NYC, I my taste has changed and I realize that this is not as close to "real" thai as it could be, but for the island, it provides a nice ethic change over the pub and seafood.
