While waiting on my shrimp burger, I decided to venture out looking for coffee and found Island Produce right next door. There there is a nice outdoor seating area. The inside is very cute and homie with lots of thoughtful decorations. They offer lots of great fresh produce, prepared refrigerated food, and all the basic staples that you need from a small hole in the wall grocery. They also sell a little bit of local art and some cute local memorabilia. When I inquired about the coffee, Jen let me know that not only was the coffee local, but the small size comes in a fully biodegradable potato cup, the jumbo size (which is enormous) comes in a repurposed reusable plastic container with a lid that they had used previously for the collard greens, that they use paper biodegradable straws, and that even the ice is sourced locally. Now there are plenty of places that have policies and practices which are pro- environment. But you can tell that it legitimately matters to Jen that the jumbo coffee containers are are reused or repurposed instead of being just thrown away. I accidentally left without my lid, and she literally sprinted out to my car to bring it to me to make sure that I would be able to use the container for something else down the road. Basically, everything about this interaction really reinforced the idea that Jen is a person who genuinely cares about her customers, her business, and the world around her. Typically on short trips I try to avoid going to the same place more than once. But I had to swing by here and get a second jumbo cup of coffee in a reusable container on my way out of town. This is the type of business that we really need more of. If you're reading this and you have the opportunity, I highly recommend that you come here for coffee, ice cream, produce, or just to have a pleasant interaction with some genuinely nice people.
