This hole in the wall Thai restaurant is one you don't want to miss out on! When you walk by you might not think too much of it but it's totally worth checking out! It's clean, and the staff is very friendly and prompt. If you don't want something a certain way they're very accommodating. My friend doesn't eat beef but wanted pho. They were more than willing to make her chicken pho and it's not even on the menu! To me, that sets some restaurants apart from others. I also go the Coconut Soup/Tom Kah! Chattanooga has a very nice downtown area on the river with mountain views, and this restaurant is nowhere near it. I was a bit skeptical of driving out to the suburbs through a tunnel (!) to this anonymous location, but this is definitely a place that I was lead to because they're killing it on all the review sites, and I see no reason to dissent. It's a small and fairly spartan interior, which was full when I arrived, perhaps because they were one of seemingly very few local restaurants open on Sunday. The fried chili paste dish-one of my favorites-was available in spice levels 1-5, and 4 was plenty enough to keep my nose running throughout. I imagine their maximum spice level is pretty legit, but I didn't want my intestines declaring war on me during a long road trip. But by no means was it pure chili. The mix of sweet and savory flavors, the tofu fried on the outside and soft on the inside, the crisp, perfectly cooked vegetables made for a perfect exemplar of what I want out of Thai food. Rice was charged separately, but even with brown rice, the total bill was quite reasonable with a good tip. A return visit for takeout yielded a pretty delicious Pad Thai, which even for takeout was nicely presented with a separate container of crushed peanuts and a lime slice. The dish was fish sauce free when I asked, and a recommendation for other vegan options was made. Indeed, while they were busy, service overall was on point. It wasn't clear from the printed menu what's vegetarian or vegan, which if I were them I would advertise more (I only learned the place was good on these issues by reading reviews). Quality seems to have gone downhill from what it used to be. Got take out from there last night. It was clear a couple of the dishes were made with ingredients well past their expiration date. I didn't read any reviews but saw that this place was close to where I had to make copies and I love Thai. Im always up for a little mom-pop type hidden gem! When I pulled in the parking area and saw business people sitting for lunch along with casual diners I was thrilled. I don't like people starring at me eating alone. I was greeted and told to sit anywhere and was given a Small, "inexpressively" edited menu with limited lunch selections. I decided on the Tom Rudd and spring rolls. So happy with my choice. It was a broth soup with clear noodles, vegetables, one large pink shrimp and chicken. D E L I C I O U S! A woman sitting across from me was devouring her meal. We later chatted and she said she comes at least once each week. This is a place I'll visit again. They remember their customers and the people in the place were all friendly types. I really want this business to continue to prosper and to do well, but their outstandingly poor customer service and handling of a situation tonight stands out. Being from out of town for our first evening visiting Chattanooga based friends, we got take out from there based on their nice Yelp reviews and great menu selection. We ordered our items and upon getting to our friends' home six minutes away, we found a $10 item was missing, a mixed vegetables with chicken dish. We called right away to let Thai Esan know about the situation. To our shock and surprise, they disputed our report insisting that they had packed all order items and tend to double check everything. We were willing to take photos and video to verify. They declined. We even searched our back car seats again in case that one menu item may have gotten out of the plastic bag, but found nothing. The conversation went on for 10 minutes where the manager repeated that owners believed no item was missing from my order. The most they were willing to offer was possibly a 10% discount on a future order. I had paid $70.54 for the order giving an extra $5 tip. I also noticed during this disappointing and frustrating experience they CHARGE GRATUITY OF 15% ON YOUR ORDER for any to-go orders beyond $45!!! We were not informed of this during our phone order. That was $7.91 extra that I had paid for my order. Their food is very good, but given my experience we won't be ordering from them again during our stay. I did not have a great experience picking up take out from here. I called ahead and ordered a meal for 2 with two appetizers. I was told it would goals about 30-40 minutes. When I arrived about 35 mins after ordering it was not ready. This was on a busy Friday dinner rush - and I completely understood. However.. after waiting for more than an hour and seeing everyone walk out with their meals my patience was wearing thin. I checked with the cashier and was told that everything was ready except for the soup. I waited again... an hour and 15 minutes after I ordered I received my meal. They were apologetic, and again I understand it happens they were busy... BUT after I drove home (about 20 min drive) and unpackaged my order I realized that it was missing one of the appetizers and one of the sides - instead they replaced with white rice. At this point of course I was very disappointed, having waited so long I would have appreciated receiving the correct order that I paid for. I called and they were very apologetic again and I did receive a refund for the meal. The rest of the order - the Tom yum soup, thai dumplings and ginger tofu - everything was tasty. Looks like they have spruced up the place a bit, but the dining area is still a little rough around the edges. My dad went and picked up the food- not until he got home did we realize they included a tip (before a generous for takeout tip that he added on top of it). On the bill it explained for a part of 6+ or $45 (which we hit with 4 items pretty eaisly... that wouldn't feed 6 adults) on takeout they include the tip. We are pretty disappointed no one made that clear. Food had good flavor- we weren't disappointed with that but portions were not that big for the price. One of the best Thai places I've been to by far! Thai Food is very vegetarian friendly, so that's usually not a problem for me. What I love most about this place is that it doesn't have that over-the-top ambiance. It looks more like your typical evening diner, which personally makes it more homey. The prices are incredibly low and the food portions are huge. I couldn't even finish half of one of my dishes. The flavors were AMAZING. I loved loved loved the curry. The best Thai food I've had in Chattanooga. The location is nothing fancy, but the food delivers. It seems as if there's a lot of love that goes into their cooking; it comes through in their flavor. It came with a side of rice. A little sweet for my liking but it was on point. I couldn't get enough. It was $6.95. My wife got the Pad Thai with chicken at a level 2 hot (medium on scale). The tamarind sauce seemed a little thicker or "pastier" than I've seen it elsewhere. Once again, flavor was there. Nice smoky wok charred flavor (at least that's how I would describe it) and great heat. It was $8.95. Sticky rice for dessert. It was ok. Wife and son really liked it. It was $3.95. Was kind of disappointed they did not have a lunch menu. But, all day prices were about the same as some lunch prices in the area. Portions were huge.
