Came here for dinner with friends to celebrate a birthday. It's located in a strip mall in the parking lot of Walmart. The place wasn't too busy. It's on the smaller side but nonetheless, the decor was nice. The hostess was friendly and we were seated promptly. The menu isn't huge but there are various items to choose from including noodles, rice dishes, curries, salads and appetizers. Here's what we ordered: -chicken satay: ordinary -summer roll: bland - nothing special -fried calamari - tiny portion for $9 -pad thai with chicken and shrimp: my dish and my fav - it was flavorful and the portion was huge with plenty of chicken and shrimp throughout. Shrimp was perfectly cooked. The crushed peanuts and lime juice made it! -roasted duck curry: overly salty/sweet for my taste and duck was overcooked -traditional noodle soup: got level 5 spice and wasn't spicy at all and broth could've used more seasoning -sticky rice with custard: good but some of the rice was a bit too al dente so it was hard to eat I know I slammed most of the dishes we had but the service totally made up for it. Unlike other reviewers, the service I experienced was amazing. The server was friendly, knowledgable and patient with such a large party. Additionally she was very attentive with refills and checking in on us. They have these neat buttons that you can press to get the servers attention which is clever. Reminded me of button you can press on an airplane lol. Overall, I enjoyed my dish a great deal and would definitely come back for it and the outstanding service. read more

After a pretty long drive from Toronto, we briefly unloaded all of our stuff at our motel and needed to find a place to eat, STAT! After all, I was pretty famished...11 hours of driving will do that to you, especially forgoing lunch in lieu of making good time. After asking the girl at the front desk for some local joints (she was lovely but I didn't care for her recos) I googled "best restaurants in Marion IL" and with Thai-D at the top of Yelp and TripAdvisor, we decided that they both couldn't be wrong...and they weren't! After a bit of a struggle finding the place (our GPS led us astray for the SECOND time in Marion!) we finally found it in a fairly nondescript strip mall and wandered in. We were very warmly welcomed, seated and served by Erin, who was fantastic. She gave us her recommendation (I'm a regular Thai foodie, my mother not so much) and if her definition of what is "hot" isn't quite the same as mine, I'll forgive her this one little thing. My Pad Kee Mao with Tofu was truly fantastic, even if I wish I had gotten an 8 or 9 instead of a 5 on the spiciness meter! Oh well, she didn't know that I have a borderline hot sauce addiction. Mum enjoyed her (much milder) chicken Pad Thai and I also loved their house "Thai-D Salad"...a fantastic appetizer. Also got a free desert by checking in on Yelp (it pays to do so) and went with the very refreshing coconut ice cream. All in all, a fantastic meal. The place itself is clean, brightly lit and actually the antithesis of most of the good Thai places I've been to...for whatever reason, I've found that the slightly seedier looking Thai restaurants have the best food but Thai-D was not only delicious but very...well, tidy. So although Southern Illinois may not scream "amazing Thai food", I was very pleasantly surprised. It's better than a lot of places I've tried in much bigger cities. I may not stopover again in Marion anytime soon but if I am even remotely close, I would go out of my way to try Thai-D again. It's that good. read more

I was leery of Thai food so far away from a major metropolis, but Thai D did not disappoint. It was easy to find off I-57, located in a strip mall near the big shopping mall. We met friends for lunch. The Pad Thai chicken was portioned enough for two. Plus they give you soup and an egg roll with the lunch specials. Food was good, as was the brewed ice tea. This is hands down the best Thai place in Southern Illinois. The staff is very attentive. We had a group of 5 about half a hour before close and no problems with anything. The server said she felt like she was not that attentive to us but she was. The food is by far better the the other places. The serving sizes where larger for the same price. My best friend recommended this Thai place vs. any of the other Thai restaurants between Carbondale and Marion. We had fried calamari for an appetizer, and it was worth every cent. That was some of the meatiest calamari I've ever had, since a lot of places like to give you mostly breading and little calamari, but not this place. It was served with a duck sauce (I believe), and it was out of sight. For the main meal, he had Chicken Pad Thai with a spice level of 10 (you can choose how spicy you want your meals, from 1, being almost no spice, to 10, which is HOOOOOT... You can also go all the way up to 15, even though it's not listed on the menu, according to my buddy, if you want super duper hot!), and I had their Noodle Soup w/Chicken with a spice level of 3 (my mouth likes spice, but my gut can't handle it as well anymore). The soup had a very unique and delicious flavor, but it wasn't until I added some lime (which was provided) and a bit of soy sauce (which my buddy asked for his dish) that the soup really shone! His Pad Thai, which he gave me a taste of, was some of the better Pad Thai I've ever had. Overall, the food was good and filling, and the server was VERY attentive (especially during the busy time that we were there), and very nice. I'll start with this, the food tasted great and our options were somewhat limited on Sunday at 6:00. The service was great, the food did taste up to par. The dessert (purple sticky rice with custard) was a little too sweet and the custard didn't really compliment it too well. The service was excellent and the portions were more than enough for leftovers/lunch the next day. That's where the high marks stopped. The horror that was unleashed upon my, and my wife's intestinal tracks, we're still going through. I would think maybe this was a 1-off event but the fact that we both ate it and shared our dishes and my wife couldn't be far from a toilet after eating dinner and leftovers leaves little mystery as to the cause. The food was a not the best Thai food though. Thai coffee some of the best we've had. Oyster sauce on mixed vegetables bland and watery. Chicken fried rice too salty. Lad Nar bland. The extra spice offered doesn't add enough flavor or heat but more salt. Spring roll was good sauce it came with was not. Crab Rangoon was decent. I absolutely loved this place! I've been to a lot of Thai restaurants, and Thai-D is definitely my favorite so far. I wish there was a location near me! I ordered the Thai-D fried rice with vegetables and tofu. The serving size was very generous, could be split into two meals or split amongst two people. What a delightful spot! Great atmosphere, but the star is the food. I had the chicken satay skewers, very tender and moist, and the peanut sauce was excellent. The Pa-nang curry with shrimp was delightfully spiced, and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. The next time I'm here, I will try skipping the rice and having bean sprouts instead. When we walked we were greeted by the owner with a Thai greeting. Very cozy place with lots of great decorations from Thailand. The place was very busy but we were promptly seated and got our drinks. Even the weird drinks with no ice. He got Thai coffee and I got my usual dessert first sticky rice with coconut custard. I hate to give this place a 3-Star because it's really should be a 2-Star. The only reason for the additional star is because there really isn't another choice to eat Thai food in within 15 miles so they get the additional star. I read some of the reviews about the place being an authentic Thai food place. If you are REALLY looking for authentic Thai food this is not the place...problem is that there are none in Marion. You are better off downloading a recipe of the net and making the dish at home. The dish I got was Glass Noodle Salad - Yum Won Sen for you other Thai people. It didn't taste anything like it was supposed to. In addition to that, it was too salty and had too much sugar. My husband got the green curry which wasn't bad. I would prefer not to go here again and just drive over to Carbondale for some Thai food... or cook at home. My recent experience at Thai D was really disappointing because of the poor service. The restaurant has new business hours and closes at 8:00pm these days. We arrived at 7:20. After we ordered, we waited for more than a half hour before the waitress brought our appetizer. While we were waiting, customers who arrived after us got their orders, and our waitresses never came to check on us. We finally asked why, she told us they were closing the kitchen, so it took longer. When we got our food at 8:00, they started to sweep the floor while people were still eating. It was such an unpleasant experience, and I would not suggest anyone going to the restaurant after 7:00pm. read more

The problem with Thai D isn't that it tastes terrible, but that it only vaguely tastes like Thai food. I've had Thai food made by friends who are Thai, as well as from a dozen or so restaurants from different parts of the US. There are similarities and differences between the food made by friends and all of the restaurants with the exception of Thai D. I struggled between giving them 2 or 3 stars and finally decided on 3 because their staff had always been nice and outside of not tasting that much like Thai food I can beat describe the general flavor as "so-so." It almost tastes as though they've replaced certain traditional spices with ones commonly found in the US, possibly to save money. I couldn't really say and this is speculation. I would just tell anyone who says that they don't like Thai food and only know Thai D to give it a chance someplace else, possibly in Paducah, St Louis, Louisville, or Nashville sometime. read more

Finding Thai-D in Southern Illinois was a pleasant surprise. When a colleague suggested having a dinner meeting at Thai-D I was skeptical but agreed. I love Thai food but, after living in Chicago for 10 years, I have high expectations and have been disappointed with most Thai food I have tried in Central and Southern Illinois. However, the Pad Thai at Thai-D was fabulous. It reminded me of my favorite Thai place in Chicago. It tasted fresh with just the perfect amount of flavor and spice. After living abroad and sampling great food from across the globe, my family and I moved back to my home town of Carbondale. As a vegan it's hard to find a decent restaurant that is happy to cater to our eating styles let alone have decent food. This place took care of both. When I first walked in, I asked the hostess if they had and vegan or vegetarian options on the menu. She very quickly responded "Everything on the menu except the soup can be made vegetarian or vegan." Such a delight to speak with someone at any restaurant that has an understanding of different dietary eating requirements. I ordered the Pad Thai with vegetables and tofu and the Spicy Fried Rice. My wife ordered the Pad See Ew. Their spice range is from 1-10 and the food was actually as spicy as we requested! My wife and I ate family style and shared the dishes. All three were some of the best food we've had in a long time. The tofu was fried perfectly and the vegetables were cooked but crisp. The food was far from bland, well seasoned and spicy! Pad Thai is such a hard dish for restaurants to create without fish sauce, but this one was spicy, sweet, salty and sour in the right proportions. It was perfect. Our waitress, Erica, was great. Attentive without harassing. Our glasses were never empty and our bare dishes were swept away promptly. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting some great Thai food in Southern Illinois, but especially for any vegetarians or vegans as they take great care to ensure that the food stays clean to your eating preference. My favorite place to eat within an hour driving distance from me. They have a gluten free menu, which makes things really easy. My favorite dish of theirs is their Pad Thai, with extra veggies and fried tofu. Super filling, super delicious. The only time we go is for lunch, when they have their fantastic lunch specials. My husband and I will often ask for no soup, because we aren't fans. More often then not when you request no soup before you sit down they will give you an extra egg roll. So remember that next time you dine in. I live 45 minutes away and this is the restaurant I check in at more often then any other. My only complaint is that it's not closer to me. read more

I get the distinct vibe that I could have ordered any number of things and had a great meal here. First off, they did a top-notch job with the Crab Rangoons. As someone who had not-too-stellar Crab Rangoons fairly recently, the common pitfalls of (1) overcooking the pastry and (2) skimping on the imitation crab were skillfully avoided. Furthermore, they absolutely nailed the dipping sauce. Tempted to call this a five-star dish. The fried rice was also really quite something. I love that this place is willing to serve food that is probably too spicy for your own good if you ask for it. I myself stayed in the more reasonable range of around 5 (which they call "hot") and it was not lacking in heat. I'm sure the diehard spice addict could be readily sated here if they headed into the 8+ range. I wish more places in this part of the country were willing to serve this kind of heat. More than the spice, though, the ingredients were fresh, and the sauce was inventively flavorful. Yum. read more
