This place is stupendous. I travel to Marion for work quite often, but only discovered Thai-D recently. I've had both dine in and take away, and these folks have never disappointed. They tailor the spiciness to your liking, on a 1-10 scale. I tend to like things on the spicier side, so I usually go with a level 7; not too hot, but it lets you know the heat's there. They're also happy to customize dishes and ingredients. I recently had them swap out some bell peppers in favor of snow peas; it gave the dish a decidedly different taste, which was a pleasant new experience. All in all, a great place. My only complaint is that I now have something about coming to Marion that I don't hate. read more

Excellent! We stopped here for lunch on our way home to Chicago area from a spring break trip in Florida. My husband said it was the best sweet and sour soup he has ever had. Great staff and great food. I really like the Thai Catfish dinner. It can be prepared 3 different ways, but I like it the most with green curry. I like spicy food a lot, and I always order it at spice level 10 and ask them to make it as hot as they want without covering up the catfish. A surprising gem in Marion IL, Thai D offers a wide assortment of Thai dishes as well as a fine beer list and good wine. We loved the cashew tofu and green curry. Heat levels may be selected from 1 to 10 and we did just fine at a 3. We also had the purple rice custard for dessert, which was absolutely scrumptious. Really good inexpensive thai food. Service was fast and great. They understood our dietary preferences and tweaked our items ordered as we wanted perfectly. Lunch menu is fairly small with under 15 items, but hey you get free egg rolls, soup and ice tea. Authenticity? Well, it was a little americanized. Specialty restaurants non-diverse areas are sometimes a crap-shoot. And, as Marion is not the home of a large, ex-pat Thai community, I was admittedly leery. I needn't have been concerned. Thai-D is excellent, and something of a wildcard as I didn't expect to find a place like this here. The food is fresh and well-prepared. The servers will advise and management is close by. And -- perhaps best of all -- they allow orders off the menu! The Tom Ka Kai (a coconut milk soup in this case with chicken) was as good as I've had anywhere in the world. And Sticky Rice is a must. If you don't know this one, get the server to show you how. This place outperformed my expectations by a longshot. And I agree it's one of the very best places in the region. I only wish for their sake they'd had an easier-to-find location. So why no 5-star? I'm saving it for when the old Les Halles from back when it opened, opens a local branch :}. I ate there once with a friend and it was VERY crowded. The service and food was great! I could hardly wait to take my husband. We went today. The place was less than half full. After being seated and given menus, we read the menu and waited for our drink order to be taken. It never was. We made our selections and were still waiting for our server. Still no drinks. We waited another 5 minutes. When my husband saw another table seated AFTER us get their order taken, we left. My husband used to work as a waiter and he thought the service was ridiculous as well. I love Thai food. But to me this isn't Thai food. This is like a McDonalds or Burger King version of Thai food. It taste generic. But I did try it 2 times to make sure the first time wasn't just a fluke. But the first time wasn't a fluke. The food at Thai D is just simply bad. The waitresses I had the 2 times I was there were really rude. I remember I had to go ask for more tea more than once during a time I was there and they weren't even busy. The waitresses are more focused on gossiping than working. I left a $2 tip for a $8 lunch one afternoon and as I was heading out I heard the waitresses complaining it was only a $2 tip. I'm thinking your lucky you got a $2 tip. The "soup" or whatever you want to call it is basically just water. Anyway the food is bad so I would say go to Thai Taste in Carbondale. The food taste better and you get better service from the waitresses. read more

By SF Bay Area standards, this is a top notch Thai restaurant. Based on another Yelp review by someone from Toronto, I ordered the Pad Kee Mao, plus the red curry dish, each with soft tofu (not deep fried) at level 4 spiciness (on the 10 point scale), and both dishes turned out to be just the level of spiciness that I was hoping for (i.e., no need for a downward regional adjustment). Fresh and delicious. My only problem was that it was so tasty that I kept on going and got the coconut ice cream (also delicious--made with rice and real coconut) and ended up overstuffing myself. I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Totally amazingly good. Fresh and good portions. We got lunch. Which comes with tea and a simple soup that is refreshing. Then red curry chicken and pad thai chicken both at level 3 medium heat. Visited for dinner while on a long driving journey. We ordered vegetarian curries and the vegetable fried rice. The curries were delicious and the lowest spice level they offer, level three was about perfect, with a bit of a spicy kick but not overpowering. We weren't sure what to expect having eaten our Thai food in places as varied as the DC area to Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Stayed overnight in Marion enroute to Ohio and wanted a non-fastfood dinner. Thai D hit the spot! First off, the customer service was outstanding! Our waitress was helpful with the menu and explained the spiciness scale. Coming from Texas, we should have gone with our instinct that a "5" was not going to be as HOT as advised, but we took her advice anyway. Hubby had a curry dish that he should have ordered at an 8-spicy, but didn't. The rest of the family ordered noodle dishes: Pad See Eww, Pad See Mao, and Laad Nar, each was delicious. Thai D has very unethical policies. It's the THAI 's way of doing business. I was there w/ my bf for dinner on 6/21/2010. I ordered an entree of flat noodles. The noodles was very salty and burnt. I couldn't eat it, so I put it a side and just told my boyfriend that I was full, bc I didn't want to ruin the mood. The waitress, Shawnee came to asked if everything was okay. I said the noodle is very salty. She asked if I want another plate, I said I am okay, then she insisted and said " I see what I can do." She came out later w/ a different noodles plate. This time it was not burnt. I ate a little but couldn't finished it. My bill came out and I was charged for 2 plates of noodles. I asked and they said it's their policy and they would call the police if I don't pay. It is their way to make money and I had paid for their lousy cook. They called the police on me. Of course I pay bc I am a high class. read more
