We were excited to introduce two people in our party to Thai 9 for their first visit because it has always been one of our family's favorite restaurants in Dayton. Unfortunately, this was also our first visit under the new ownership, and it was such a disappointment. Our first clue probably should have been that there was no wait on a weekend. In the past, weekends almost always meant a full dining room and a wait for a table. Our server was very kind, but he didn't seem familiar with the menu. Flavors are meh and Miranda our waitress was rude and unable to effectively convey the order to the kitchen (just an omission of one ingredient) and then was LOUDLY frustrated at me sending it back. The manager Jeff** was off putting and not very personable. My dish was still missing major components after his help so I just boxed it to go. In addition one of the woman clearing tables smelled like B.O. and heavy fragrance. She didn't have on a uniform and was wearing a tiny jacket which might explain the combo of smells. Avoid. A really bad dining experience that could have been mitigated with patience and actually listening during ordering process. Edit: The managers name is actually *Cody. Not sure why he lied about it. I really enjoy some spicy Thai food and this place hit the spot. The food was just the right level of spice at a 5. The restaurant is in this cute little area the Oregon District, the oldest neighborhood in Dayton. It was really neat seeing the buildings from the mid 1800's. The service was fast and friendly. We arrived on the early side because we had a show afterwards to make sure we had plenty of time but that was not a problem at all. In fact, it felt a little rushed with our empty dishes whisked away and our bill brought out without asking if we would like anything else. This was our first visit to Thai 9 and we loved it! The first thing we noticed was that it was a bit hard to find from the shared parking lot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Entering from the back of the restaurant in to a patio then through back door, our eyes were greeted by a large bar under a cathedral ceiling. A mezzanine with dining tables overlooks the large dining room with Thai-style art. It's a spacious grand look, for sure.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The two-sided menu focuses on classic Thai dishes, including a variety of appetizers, curries, noodles, and soups. We enjoyed the green papaya salad and shrimp-vegetable tempura. I was very happy with my Red Curry with chicken. Although there was only a few pieces of shredded chicken, the abundance of delicious vegetables and red curry sauce over well-made white rice was very satisfying. When I had eaten as much as I could, the portion provided me an ample amount to take home. It made the perfect afternoon snack. The beef Pad Thai similar---light on the beef with an abundance of noodles, bean sprouts, peanuts, scallions, and that ever so enticing peanut sauce that makes this dish hard to resist. The mushrooms were good and had good flavor. The scallops were excellent. The use a heat scale of 2 - 9 with the spice starting at a 6. I ordered a 6 on the heat. The heat was exactly what I expected, spicy but not ridiculous but it built over time. The scallops were cooked almost perfectly. The scallop dish carried the night. I really love going to Thai 9 in the Oregon District for their delicious food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated--very open, inviting, and stylish, which always makes for a great atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is consistently excellent. I usually order the yellow mango curry with tofu, which is one of my absolute favorites. You can choose a spice level from 0 to 9; I went with a 3 this time, and it was much spicier than expected, so I'll definitely choose a lower level next visit. Still, the flavors are fantastic and one of the main reasons we keep coming back. Unfortunately, the service was really lacking during our most recent lunch visit and the ones before this one. I went with my daughter, and our waitress didn't seem to listen at all. We ordered sushi as an appetizer, but even though I clearly stated it was a starter, she treated it as my entire order. When it came time for entrées, she only asked my daughter what she wanted. When I spoke up, she said she thought I didn't want anything else. She also never came back to check on us. This place was recommended to us by a local. We went in a little later on a Sunday night and while we waited a bit to be seated, our service was really good. My noodles were delicious, however I ordered a spice level 8/10 and they had no spice to them. My friend who ordered a 2/10 reluctantly tried them and was also shocked at the lack of spice. The salad that came with my meal had a dressing with a strange texture that didn't really appeal to me. That part was on me, but it still impacted my enjoyment of the dish. We decided to try Thai 9 on a Friday since they seemed to have a lot of seafood options. And they do! The menu is very extensive overall and a bit overwhelming. This is a place I recommend you review the menu on their website in advance to narrow down your choices. It's much bigger inside than it looks...beautiful decor, high ceiling, multiple dining rooms and a really cute little bar area that I would love to experience sometime, other than a packed house busy Friday. The ladies room was very clean and nicely appointed. There's also two-level outdoor seating for fine weather days. We started with Fish Cakes which were really nothing to write home about. Didn't care for the chewy texture and not much flavor...thankfully the amazing cucumber sauce really saved them. Carrot cabbage slaw was fine. I had the Spicy Scallops. They use a 1 to 10 spice scale but they seem to still lean toward the mild side. I got a 6 and asked for extra spice on the side. I was expecting that to be dry Thai spice but I got a little pot of chili oil instead. The scallops were delicious though and I would order again, just making sure to express my high-spice desire more clearly . My husband got the Seafood Hot Pot Soup - what a presentation and sensory delight. I had serious entrée envy when that arrived at the table. He let me have a bit- it was a really generous serving too. Just outstanding! Service was prompt and attentive. When we told the hostess it was our first time, she said that she'd give us their best server, Taylor. And she was just great. The inside is much bigger than I was anticipating, with a separate bar area, sushi bar, and two floors of seating. They also have a pretty large patio in the back for when the weather is nice. There's a parking lot behind the restaurant, that is encouraged to pay by the hour. There's also various street parking around the area. The food was pretty good, with average portion sizes. Thai 9 has LONG been a staple of the downtown Dayton area in the historic Oregon District. They have a full menu of traditional Thai food however they offer various other products such as a full sushi bar. If you're going to eat in, get there a bit early and be aware they have a dress code that is a bit relaxed. They describe it as "business casual dress code, jeans and t-shirts are accepted but no tank tops please". MY personal favorite dish is the fried rice with chicken at a spice level of one. Pretty much every dish you order they'll ask you a spice level, 0-5 with zero being no spice, one being the lowest, and 5 being blazing your face off. If you do plan on carry out, be aware if you're calling on a Friday or Saturday, if you call late into the evening, they wil be SO busy that they eventually stop taking to-go orders. It's just that popular. You'll just have to deal with it and try again another day and call earlier! read more

Visiting family and decided to do a family dinner here. The ambiance is great. This might be the largest Thai restaurant I've ever seen. The customer service was great. They said an hour wait for 9 people on a Saturday night but we may have only waited 20 minutes. Appetizers: The crab rangoons and spring rolls were so good. The wings not so much...they were basically mixed in ketchup sauce. The downside was that all the appetizers were really cold, not even room temp. The main entrees were good and really hot. Chicken Thai Spicy - this is a stir fry dish that wasn't too bad but something was missing for me. Chicken Drunken Noodles - this was good but a little on the sweet side. Could have used a little more spice. Overall, this is a highly recommended Thai restaurant and I would go back again myself. We ordered a few rolls to start, all of which were delicious. For my entree I went with a cashew veggie/tofu stir fry - it was yummy and the portions were large (two meals out of it for me!). Price points were fair on all the dishes. They had a decent local beer selection which is always a plus for me. So I haven't been to Thai 9 in years since I don't go downtown very much. Went there for lunch and I just was not impressed. I got the spicy rice noodles and it had no flavor. Just tasted like oil. Also got the fresh roll with tofu. Tasteless as well. I definitely recommend better Thai food elsewhere. I don't think I'll be going back. Service was fast but my order was messed up. read more
