My husband and I were visiting his brother in Memphis for a weekend, and I visited four (FOUR!) independent bookstores! (Ps. Kudos to Memphis for being so reader-y. So many bookstores, and all so unique and charming.) South Main Book Juggler was very cute and very homey. And I LOVED that they had a section for local interest books. When I'm visiting a city I like to get books that I might not ordinarily pick up. So when I found that section, I picked up a really interesting civil rights era memoir and a history of Beale Street! I'll always remember that I got those books at the Juggler! And that's why book stores are great!

It honestly felt like we were being judged and profiled for no reason. We weren't being loud or disruptive -- just browsing like any other customers -- yet we were treated with suspicion and disrespect the entire time. A bookstore should feel welcoming and inclusive, especially for young readers, and this experience was the complete opposite. I visit 4 or 5 times a year & have gotten at least 30 "just what I was looking for" books & CD's from here. I am careful to buy only items that will be read or viewd more than once, or I would have to buy a new bookcase every year. Staff was quick to answer questions & give directions. May take half an hour (or so) to discover the ins and outs of the entire layout. Entire family should enjoy a visit. NOTE: The Germantown Library Friends Bookstore is smaller, but is my favorite library-related used bookstore in the Memphis area. I visit once or twice a week for all sorts of "modern" books & CD's at bargain prices, and for fine older books which often come up for sale. Have bought at least 150 books there this decade, some of which were absolute steals. It's a very inexpensive addiction.

I visited the other day to get a bookmark and a book light (they didn't have any). With that said, I wish they would either hire someone or consult with someone that can help them modernize the store and but up-to-date books and accessories. They did not have a lot of selections. I couldn't find daily devotionals (not even Our Daily Bread) and that's a free booklet that they would normally have all the time. Then I looked for something specifically for women and they didn't have that either. I was finally able to find bookmarks, but it came in bulk. This store is right across the parking lot from St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral and caters to Episcopalians and other Christians in the books and other merchandise they carry. I have to preface this review with the disclaimer that I am a Presbyterian Minister (Teaching Elder) and I love books. This book store has a nice selection of books, they even have a nice selection, albeit only one 6 foot shelf, of used books. The store is nicely laid out and they also have a nice selection of jewelry, gifts, cards, and even some music cds. The staff was very helpful and they give a discount to clergy. I would recommend this books store to anyone looking for books or Christian gifts.

This is the experience I want when I dig through the racks - I'd rather this than finding THE record I want at full price plus or a bunch of might-be-goods made unattractive by pricing that's too high. While the selection here is decent, and there were records that grabbed my eye, there's also a lot of stuff that's readily available at any thrift store across the country, that should/would be in a dollar bin at most record stores. However, selection really isn't the issue. The problem is the fact that more than half of the records aren't priced and you have to bring them up to the counter for the employee to, if I had to guess, price via discogs listings. I suppose since you've shown interest in the records by bringing them up to the counter, they feel like they don't have to be competitive with their quotes - they definitely aren't beating online prices, not even with the cost of shipping excluded. Needless to say, this is an utter buzzkill; what a horrible tease it is to have something pique your interest, excitement and anticipation gathering as you walk to the counter and wait for a price, only to be told a number that you're not willing to pay, that instantly kills your joy, that you could have found without leaving your home and wasting the time and the gas. Seriously, stay at home, you'll get better deals on a better selection on discogs and/or ebay.
