This place should be called Texican't Mexican Bar and cafe. I guess they can't screw up the drinks which is good because I think you have to be inebriated to order from the kitchen. I'll admit that I'm not a big fan of Mexican, Tex-Mex or other southern methods of food preparation. Judy is! She's the professional dietician, cookbook collector and best judge of foods quality, composition, and presentations. So I ordered my standard shrimp fajitas, no guacamole, no regurgitated beans, no pica de gallo, just rice and flour tortillas. The sizzling platter came to the table smoking hot with everything on the platter burnt to destruction. Judy, on the other hand ordered the full plate. One of their dinner "Plato's" where everything looks smashed together with all the things I don't like. But she is the "Foodie" and loves ethnic foods. She rates this place much lower than I did only had burnt shrimp and vegetable with a cup of the worst rice a mouse ever ran from. This place is definitely on our "one and done" list. I have found memories of Texican Cafe. I came here regularly as a young g high school and college aged kid. This local restaurant used to have a location on Lamar near Barton Creek mall that has since closed down. This South Austin location on Menchaca Rd is Rancho style inside with cozy dim lit mood. I'm a fan of the one in Kyle and hadn't been to this location until today when my friends and I finished a 10k and were HUNGRY. All eleven of us came here. We were seated very quickly for being such a large group, and our drinks and food also arrived in pretty record time considering how many of us were there. The server did a great job (only tiny mistake was switching my Dr. Pepper for a friends' Diet Coke-- again, impressive for such a large group, and we realized it right away lol). Server was very attentive to if we needed refills, more chips, plates cleared, etc. Food was yummy, as expected. Maybe a little more flavor would really bump this up to a five-Star review. But portion sizes were generous, so I had leftovers to take home. Bathroom was also clean and well stocked. They use GOOD paper towel (I won't lie, after running, I needed a quick freshening up) and the hot water is hot but not scalding. Had an amazing dinner while visiting the area to see long time friends after a few years! The meal was perfect, the service was terrific, and the vibes indoor and outdoor were just happy families enjoying an evening out with the beautiful South Austin area weather. I wish I could rate it less than one star honestly!! If you have younger children this place is NOT the place for you! My 9 month old was being vocal and the manager came to my table and requested if he could get my child some food (mind you he is 9 months old and I'm feeding him in slow smaller portions) so he could be less vocal ! The place is deceptively big! So many rooms and tables, it's easy to get a table for two at any time. I've had great service when I come here. The servers are super friendly and will refill your chips and salsa so quickly! Ive had the chicken tortilla soup and the green chili soup and both are super flavorful. I loved eating at this restaurant!!! I went with my family of 6, and we had an amazing time! We enjoyed beef fajitas and the salad with chicken and our little ones loved the soft tacos and nachos on the kids menu! The service was good, and our waiter was very welcoming! It was such a pretty restaurant and we loved looking at all of the paintings on the walls and all the wonderful decorations in the rooms! Came in after my weekly hike and bike walk with my friend. We were out (again) all morning and after the hills and sun, we were ready for a bit of a come down. We didn't have a place in mind and just rattled off placed we thought were near by and when I said Texican she enthusiastically said "I can get a lemonade"! So Texican it was and I was glad. There was no wait on an early Sunday afternoon and almost immediately after being seated the waitress was there taking drink orders. We both got lemonades (how could we not after my friend's exclamation) and waters. The waitress was really sweet and friendly. We chatted about our walk and the trail we used. She seemed very interested and told us a bit about her dog who she likes to take out. She was a joy. She also told us about the different flavorings that could be added to the lemonade. We chose watermelon and she said it was a good choice because their watermelon flavoring was made in house. After bringing our drinks we decided to get an order of nachos to share. Neither of us wanted to eat a lot after being in the heat for so long; and I still had a structured workout to do once I got home. The watermelon flavor in the lemonade wasn't overly sweet or annoyingly artificial. It was perfectly refreshing after being out on the trails in the Texas humidity. I would HIGHLY recommend getting this anytime! The nachos were good. The chips used seemed to be freshly made (just like their tortilla chips- both incredibly delicious) and to me were the highlight. They also stood up well to the mound of toppings that adorned the appetizer. My only complaint was that the chicken itself (we got shredded chicken) wasn't very flavorful, so stacked up against the abundance of toppings and the incredible tortilla chips it was just a meaty texture that added nothing to the nachos. I'd say try the fajita chicken if you're getting the nachos. That's what I'm going to do next time...because there WILL be a next time! read more

This is one of the most friendly, accepting, comfortable, and family-friendly dinin' spots you'll find in this area. The staff are incredibly cordial and polite. The food is, primarily, tex-mex, and, yeah, some folks will have less than stellar opinions about that, but, don't care - the food is made fresh, is small kitchen style, and, I find, along with the staff, that makes me feel more at home. I'd definitely go so far as to bring a date here, because it's an atmosphere for *"real"* folks, it's well-suited to relaxed, casual conversation, so, it's a warm, comfy spot, for down-to-earth conversation, and getting to know just 'bout anyone. It was happy hour and I got the Mexican martini which was the featured for the day. My friend got a Dos Equis. The service was quick and our waitress was timid but efficient. They have a full bar too and some come in just for a drink at the bar. It was busy for a Wednesday at 4:30. I can say I've had better tortilla soup but it was still good, just seemed to missing something or it could've been more spicy. My friend loved her stuffed avocado dish. It's right off Menchaca and 1626, so easy to get to, just not visible if you're driving by since it's farther in the lot. Most people who've lived in the area have been coming here for years. I came all the way out here because I heard about their chips and salsa. This place has a lot of room, and it was a nice experience, they did not disappoint. I heard they have some really good chips and salsa - so you get those when you sit down. Yes - the chips are light, crispy, made specially for them (per the waiter). A bit salty - but it's bearable. The red salsa was pretty good too. I needed more with those chips so I got that Queso with beef and guac in it - - oh so good! 9 bucks. I couldn't decide what to get but a couple of people recommeded the Diablo Enchiladas. Plate comes out hot, got the beef, the sauce is a little spicy, and the enchiladas are pretty respectable size. In fact I could only eat one and had to take the rest home. The rice is solid, the black beans were good, I really enjoyed my meal here. Service was prompt and courteous. They kept filling my chip basket and I kept munching away. I will definitely be back here for some other items on their menu that sounds so appetizing. They kept saying Fajitas are great here and they did look good. The Tortilla Soup looks great too. A lot of nice items to pick here. I have eaten here many times with my sons as well as by myself. The food is always really good very fresh. I had fajitas. My son had enchiladas and my other son had the tacos. Everything was very good. Very fresh. I did have a margarita as well, which was very tasty. Great customer service staff is always very friendly. They took good care of us. A group of friends stopped in here recently for a post-meeting repast. I was a little hesitant as I've tried another Texican location in north Austin and was very disappointed. I am happy to say that my experience in this location was completely different and a very good one. The restaurant was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon but the hostess managed to squeeze our group of six in. Chips, salsa, and drinks made their appearance very quickly after we were seated. The chips were actually very tasty and fresh and held their own with the medium hot salsa. Our orders came out pretty quickly and they were consumed almost as fast. I had the chile relleno stuffed with chicken and it was executed perfectly-definitely above your average relleno. Our server was perhaps the highlight of the afternoon. You could not tell she was in her 70s as she moved with lightning speed around the dining room and her wit was just as quick. She made us feel welcome and kept us entertained throughout the afternoon. This is a very nice place for a casual meal. Recommended. read more

This is one of my new favorite Tex Mex restaurants in Austin! I love how there's a lot of seating so you're bound to get a table within 15-20 mins max wait typically. My go to is the Chipotle Chicken Enchiladas. So very flavorful but not too spicy. I also love how they'll top off chip baskets on the house. Their giant margs are to die for and steal during happy hour! My own grievances is the sometimes really slow service to order/check out from some of the staff I've had. I'd still come again for sure and but I'd recommend it at a time when I'm not hangry or have another event to get to afterwards. read more

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. It's near my house and has been a staple of the community for years. Their happy hour specials for their cocktails and apps are some of the best deals in town. Food highlights, all excellent: -Queso and salsa - so, so good. - Margaritas - massive and delicious. Their other cocktails are good too. Sour cream chicken enchiladas - I've stopped ordering these at other Mexican restaurants because none of them can ever compare to these. This is also a favorite of my dad's. - Chicken tortilla soup - hearty, served with rice and lime, and rich in flavor. My dad's order when he isn't super hungry. - San Antonio enchiladas - My mom and my vegetarian friend's favorite enchilada order here. - Carne Guisada - Another favorite of my mom's. - Chicken fajita tacos - My brother's go-to order. - Sopapillas - Treat yourself. They are so light and fluffy, yet perfectly fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and drizzled in the perfect amount of honey. I have yet to find sopapillas that are crafted this lightly yet packed with so much flavor. Service: Having come here for over 15 years, I've seen the ups and downs Texican has gone through, especially during and directly following the pandemic. It is a massive space and seats tons of people, but it has sometimes been hard to hire enough waiters to serve everyone if most of the restaurant is full. Service can be slow if they are serving too many tables. I never come here to rush off to somewhere else. I mostly come here to enjoy a good meal in good company so I'm usually okay with it taking a little longer than normal. My family also goes to the Kyle location fairly regularly and that one is newer with nicer decor and runs smoother without the slow service. As Austin has changed so much, these family-owned, traditional Tex-Mex places are slowly shutting down for a high-end fusion place or a new cocktail bar. Texican has weathered those changes, stayed authentic to being a family-friendly and neighborhood restaurant, and managed to open additional locations. If you want to enjoy amazing Tex-Mex with friends or family at reasonable prices, this is the place to go. read more

Sat at the bar for happy hour, which is Monday-Friday from 3-7. They have $1 of margs! Chris is the bartender who took care of us. He was so attentive and professional, he said that he has worked at the Texican for over 10 years, and a lot of the cooks in the kitchen have worked there for even longer. He loves it, because their food has always been consistent. The food was awesome. Salsa was on point, and the fajitas were fire. I was really impressed with their corn tortillas. Gosh. We've struck out twice in one weekend. Been here multiple times and food had always been ok but today, neither the beef nor the chicken tasted like fajitas; they were more like cooked on a flattop and just didn't taste right. The beans also were off. It seemed as if both were missing seasoning. We ended up leaving most of it there. Usually their fair is decent, just today was off. Their chips, salsa and queso are great though and so are their drinks! Their house margs are stellar and so are their margarita flights. This was my first time at this location. I love the ambiance. It has really cute decor. The service was a little slow. I asked for tortillas and they took forever to come out. I was pretty much done with my food by the time they came out. All the food was pretty good and filling. When the bill came my husband just paid it and signed the credit card and added a tip. He asked me is the tip good. I noticed it looked pretty high so I looked at the bill. I don't know if this is a regular thing for Seth (our server) or if it was just a human mistake but I had only ordered one Margarita and he charged me for 2. When we brought it up his explanation was a little strange but he did fix it. He said we would have 2 charges on the bank account and a refund in a few days. If you get Seth make sure you examine your bill especially if you have a large party. Thankfully my husband asked me about the tip because he didn't even notice the two drinks. I asked for a blended strawberry margarita. I got a strawberry lime margarita which was fine but he could of told me that they don't have strawberry Margarita so it will be lime with strawberry purée on top. It was a weak margarita too. The OG of the Texican world. I love this place. I love that they are solidly dependable for a great meal. I'm never disappointed. My go to is the ground beef Santa Fe enchiladas and a house margarita. Occasionally I'll have a Negra Modelo on tap because not many restaurants have that. That red chile is why I am always there. The New Mexican in me must have it and Texican gets it. I love the El Paso style. Sometimes the service is a little hit or miss, but I've never been wildly unhappy with it. Recently made a DoorDash purchase which needed to be adjusted. I called the Texican right away to make the change and the manager told me to instead just place the new order over the phone directly with them. He also mentioned he would cancel the DoorDash order which he did not do. I confirmed with DoorDash the manager never cancelled the order and that they can't refund me unless the restaurant confirms it was cancelled. I was ultimately charged for both orders and when I returned a few days later to show the manager proof that I was double charged he said there was nothing he could do. Very frustrating they just pocketed the additional money and weren't willing to help fund a solution. read more
