Let me start off by saying I outgrew the whole steakhouse thing years ago. Between leveling up my own culinary game in the kitchen and raising a kid who can sear a steak Gordon Ramsay would tip his hat to (literally), I usually prefer to do steak at home. But tonight? Tonight, I was feeling a Forks Up! moment. So, with a spin of the Google Maps wheel, Texas Roadhouse it was. Plus, the ladies said their bodies were due for some iron, LOL. And let me tell you... this visit just might have brought the steakhouse back into the rotation. Between the food and the service, I was impressed and I'd 1000% come back, especially if I know Jessica and Smiley are on deck. The night started on the right note the moment Jessica greeted us. She was instantly down to have a little fun while we filmed some clips for the night and Smiley, the manager, was totally game too. I asked Jessica for the "most popular" and "least popular" appetizers. Most popular? You guessed it: the legendary Cactus Blossom. Least popular? The Rattlesnake Bites, which honestly, weren't bad at all, but probably not an encore performance for me. And we didn't even make it far before the heavenly combo of those warm rolls and cinnamon butter started shrinking our appetites anyway. Dangerous. Then came the feast -- steak, more steak, shrimp, ribs, salads, rice... a full-blown carnivorous celebration. Every single cut of meat came out perfectly cooked. And not "good-for-a-chain" perfect, I mean legit steakhouse quality. Texas Roadhouse showed out on this night, no question. Now, huge shoutout to my girl Jessica. Even if the food hadn't hit (which it did), I still would've walked out with a smile. Her energy, timing, and genuine hospitality are exactly what I wish more restaurants had. She made it feel like dinner at a friend's house where everything just clicks because the vibe is right. So major thanks to Smiley and the whole crew for a killer dinner and even better service. Can't wait to drop the video on socials -- and you already know who we're asking for when we come back!

This place is always packed. The tables are basically on top of each other. And the walkways through the middle of the restaurant are always filled with parties squeezing by those coming from the other side of the restaurant. Good food though.

This young man named Jeff gave us the best womanly advice on the planet, and was rizzing. Lovely service too.

Jayda gave some of the best service I've had at Texas Roadhouse. She was super friendly, attentive, and made sure everything came out right and on time. Even when the restaurant was busy, she kept checking in and had a great attitude the entire time. She made the whole experience way better. Definitely deserves recognition for how hard she works -- if you get Jayda as your server, you're in good hands!

Roach snacking on my daughter's dinner roll.

I hate giving bad reviews, but. . . My daughter had just gotten her drink and started eating a dinner roll when she screamed and begging for my son and I to move so she could get out the booth. She quietly told me that she had looked over and seen two roaches climbing on the wall next to her. As we got up, one of the roaches actually climbed onto the table and started eating her dinner roll. The waiter wasn't phased and seemed to shrug it off with "Oh, sorry." We won't be back.

Caesar Salad (there's more dressing than it looks like in this photo)

We all know Texas Roadhouse has the best bread. I shouldn't even need to say that. I went here with my mom last night and she's gluten free so I had the basket all to myself and I was fighting demons not to eat all 4 rolls (I had 3- they're that good). I always get the Dallas filet medium rare. I feel like the sizes vary a lot, so I usually just order the 6 oz and it'll often be bigger. With my steak I also always get the Caesar salad, which has a ton of dressing and I love that the croutons aren't rock hard like the croutons at some other places. They're crunchy but melt in your mouth. I tried the mac n cheese for the first time and the sauce was a little grainy but still tasted good. There is some inconsistency with how steaks are cooked. If something isn't cooked to your liking though, they have no problem cooking it more or bringing you a new one if it's too well-done. Our servers are always super nice and the service is always quick. I also feel like this location has a pretty short wait time compared to other locations I've been to. We went at 7:30 PM on a Thursday and only had to wait 10 minutes to be seated.

Rolls - too sweet, not my thing
    Tish P.

I wish I could see what y'all see in those rolls! Either the bread was sweet or the butter spread that accompanied them. Either way, give me yeast rolls with regular butter and I'm in heaven...this, not so much! I went on a Wed or Thursday night after a flight and the wait was very minimal. The waitress I ended up with was very good and patient. I've been to TXR before but it's not my spot so I don't come often or regularly enough to be super familiar with their menu. I ended up ordering the ribs and 12 ounce ribeye with a baked potato and house salad. The ribs could have used some work, they were too fatty and the sauce could be better. Otherwise, I overall enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, towards the end of my meal, another employee came and sat across from me to roll silverware. I did see her name but forgot to write it down. I'm no prude but she clearly needs a reminder about appropriate topics to discuss when patrons are in earshot. She wasn't whispering at all, she actually talked pretty loud like she wanted other people to hear but I'd much rather not hear you and a male employee going back and forth on sexual topics. It was primarily her being loud and doing too much!

Things may have changed since some of these diners reviewed but our whole party had great things to say. We all agreed we would go again at another time. Very family friendly and the decor was well done. They offer a small bar in the front as you enter the restaurant for those who might want appetizers and watch a game and hangout. They appear to have a private room off to the side that holds about 50 people that they offer with a guarantee that you will spend a certain amount of money. I re-asked several different ways and finally got what I was looking for! We waited about 5 minutes. We ordered a drink at the bar and then got sat. Once sat, our waitress acknowledged us about 3-5 minutes later. We ordered 2 waters, a coke and cheese sticks. The coke came first. The cheese sticks about 5 minutes later, then the water about 10 minutes later. Our waitress stopped by before the water got there to see if we were ready to order. We didn't even have water yet! The place was pretty busy. Our waitress just struggled to keep up with her tables. There was another waitress who was more experienced that jumped in and helped us. We finally were able to order our dinner. The cook, or someone, came out to tell us they were out of the cut of meat we ordered. This was a disappointment because we were here to celebrate my other half's birthday. So it wasn't off to a great start. We picked something else and by the time we got our food, it was cold. (Can you hear the heavy sigh?) The manager offered to take care of my meal, but I'm not about getting a free meal. I ended up letting him give us a discount. He was very nice and really tried to make things right. So, with all the things that went wrong, I am willing to give this place a try again.

We didn't get to try a lot of items on their menu so my impression is limited to what we ordered. For appetizers, we had a variety of empanadas (spicy ground beef, chicken chipotle, italian, fugazetta). All are very tasty and probably one of the best items they have. The chimichurri that comes with them is a stand-out. We had the platter of mixed meats (parrillada che gaucho) that included 3 kinds of sausages, chicken breast, sweetbread, short rib, flank and skirt steaks. The sausages were good, the chicken was standard grilled chicken breast and the beef cuts were pretty tough (our knives had a really hard time cutting through them). Again, the chimichurri is the star and makes the meats much better. It came with 2 sides so we chose asparagus and fries tossed in garlic+parsley. For dessert, we had an apple maple empanada and a banana dulce de leche empanada with ice cream. Both are delicious but that banana one is a must-try. Fabulous.

Unfortunately we did not find this place good enough to recommend or even to come back. We ordered a dozen empanadas, we found the salteña ones full of flavor but we did not like the flavor. We also disliked that the grease was dripping. The salteña a cuchillo had the same flavor as the salteña to my palate, but the salteña a cuchillo has pieces of potato which in my opinion doesn't go great in such a small empanada. I ordered the mushroom with cheese and it was freezing cold inside. It was so small there was no point in saying anything. The spinach and cheese was flavorless. We tried ordering the salad with skirt but it turns out their meat for the salad is premade and it had to be well done, same for a sandwich. My husband does not like well done steak. I never once saw any raw meat on their grill or smelled meat being cooked. Maybe all their meats are precooked. I did not like the flavor of their chimichurri either, that's what I was mostly excited about because I love chimichurri, but no. We were disappointed and sadly will not come back. The precooked meat is difficult to overcome!

We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes. They were good, but not quite enough to dethrone our longtime appetizer champion: Pecos' fried pickle chips. The prices were reasonable, so I decided to go full-bore and order the "Cowboy" Chicken Fried Steak, which was only a few dollars more than the "Cowgirl" version. Mom chose the Chicken Fried Chicken, while my wife went with the Pot Roast. When our food arrived, I was genuinely taken aback. My chicken fried steak was larger than the plate it was served on--seriously, it was that big. The side dishes were equally generous. After bringing the leftovers home, I managed to get two more meals and a sandwich out of that steak. Likewise, both of my ladies left with take-home boxes, and that NEVER happens with Mom. She typically treats these lunch outings as her main meal of the day, but even she waved the white flag. So why not a five-star review? The answer comes down to flavor. While the portions were enormous, the service was excellent, and the prices were more than fair, the seasoning seemed a little timid. Across the board, the food could have used a bit more punch and personality. Nothing was bad--it just never quite crossed into memorable territory. That said, I would absolutely recommend Goodson's, especially if you have family or friends visiting from out of state. It showcases two classic Texas traits: HUGE portions and good value. As for the mild seasoning? If your guests are from up North, they'll probably feel right at home.

Upon arrival we noticed the live music was held on the outside patio that's shared with some other neighboring restaurants. We approached the hostess and requested to sit outside however she stated there were no open tables. I asked if we could be notified when a table opened and she stated yes. In the meantime we sat in the bar area. A gentleman approached us initially to take our drink order, then he switched with another waitress. The restaurant was really nice with dim lighting that sets the tone for an intimate date night. We ordered a wedge salad, crab cakes, steak, fries, and mac n cheese. Presentation of the food was really nice and overall the food was decent. We anticipated this steakhouse being comparable to a Perry's or Kirby's, however customer service and food quality did not meet the bar as we expected. But overall it was a decent experience.

TL:DR it is a solid choice for a special experience and a great steak. I would go again. We started off with a couple of mocktails: The Blood Orange Fizz and the mint virgin Old Fashioned. The Old Fashioned was a very tasty concoction--no alcohol burn of course but it captured the sharpness of an Old Fashioned and I really liked the mint. The Blood Orange Fizz was a mild disappointment--it had very little fizz and really needed it. Flavor was OK but not as good flat. We later got a bourbon flight, which was delivered by the bourbon sommelier and was quite fun. For starters we got a wedge salad, the Steakhouse Meatballs, and the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. The salad was fine, a standard garden salad with nice fresh ingredients. The meatballs were excellent--a steak and pork belly blend with a blueberry pepper sauce with onion strings. Great texture, lots of umami and good salt flavor. I absolutely want these next time. Same with the bacon wrapped scallops. They come on a bed of 3-cheese grits that were wonderfully creamy. The sauce has just a little heat. The scallops and bacon were cooked just right. Their seafood entrees are served over these grits, and though we didn't get any seafood I would try some next time for the grits. On to the mains: We had the Refuge Filet, the New York Strip, the Wood-fired Chicken, and the pork chop. The Refuge Filet was the highlight--the jalapeno, bacon and bleu cheese really complement the steak flavor. The steak was impeccably tender and done just right. The New York Strip was also very good. I am not a fan of this cut--when I cook it at home it's always tough. But their version is reasonably tender and has great flavor from the tallow butter they put on it. The steaks came with mashed potatoes that were pretty bland and ordinary. The wood-fired chicken was tender and had good flavor. It is marinated in lemon but we couldn't really taste it except in the bed of risotto. The risotto was quite good, nice and creamy. The pork chop was complicated. It had a tender uniform texture all the way through and nice flavor. I couldn't find any grain in it, almost like it was a fine grind. The sauce was ok, a bit one-note sweet for me. Different from and perhaps better than Perry's chop, but I think I would try something else next time. These dishes came with Apple-Bacon Brussels Sprouts and roasted carrots. The brussels sprouts were a disappointment. Might have known since it's misspelled on the menu. The brussels sprouts were barely cooked and quite tough, with too much of the bottom stem left on, adding to the bitterness. The roast carrots were fine. Since we had a birthday in the party we were treated to a special dessert. Birthday dessert at The Refuge has two major advantages--a nice tableside presentation of bread pudding flambe, and no annoying birthday song. Yay! Definitely tell them it's your birthday. The dessert is a banana bread pudding topped with ice cream. Rather uniform texture but good flavor and excellent with the ice cream. The ambiance is appropriately dark and sumptuous for a fancy steakhouse. The bathrooms are upscale, with available cloth towels. Service was fine but at a pretty relaxed pace, I definitely felt ready for the next course before it came. But we at times requested things from waiters other than the one waiting our table, and they responded immediately--good teamwork. This is not a bargain place, but we got out for under $100 apiece which I actually think is pretty good for an end-to-end meal. If you go to a steakhouse for steaks, you will do well at The Refuge.
