Texas Humane Heroes is one of the incredible animal rescue organizations in the Leander area. Although II have left a prior written review, we have utilized their services many times. They spay and neuter dogs and cats for a reasonable fee. They also have vet tech appointments had an affordable rate. You can take your pet in for vaccines and I really like the fact that you can make an appointment for that although they have certain times that are available for walk-ins as well. They have a well used building at the end of a very long driveway. One of the things I want to be sure to say is that there is a beautiful large new building up toward the front of the property and it looks like it's almost completed. We could see lots of kennels installed inside it in different areas, so although we are not certain, we believe it's going to be a new location for the rescues at Texas Humane Heroes! It appears to be an air-conditioned facility, which will be wonderful (especially in the summer ) because currently dogs are housed primarily in outdoor kennels-That they try to protect from the harshest weather. This weekend we attended a Chili Cook Off, which is an annual event supporting the facility and the animals !!!! It was the first chili cookoff I have ever attended in all of my 72 years. It was wonderful there were about a dozen different groups that cooked and distributed tastings of chili . Between them were a few of the dog services available for training, boarding, and daycare in the Leander area. Admission was $25 regardless of age . Calendars and T-shirts were also available for purchase, we actually bought 2 (two) Of the cups that were available for $10 each (and were an awesome value for anyone who chose to drink beer and wine) as those were included along with soda pop in the price of the cup!!! I really have to commend the teams in the chili cook off !!!! There was a wide variety and we didn't taste anything we thought was not in the "good" taste category. Of course we had three tickets to vote with and they went to our top three chili tastes which we felt were in the "excellent " taste category . The cloudy humid weather without rain was very tolerable. I'm hoping to see a post of the money generated by this event. By the way, they also had a silent auction with quite a variety of items that could be bid on. Once you buy your ticket, you get access to it. Much thanks to all the volunteers, the teams, and the community that supported this event. Our sweet rescue "Bo" provides us with chuckles, exercise, and just pure joy every day !!!

On Friday August 22, 2025 I took my dog to get neutered here, I picked him up around 4:15, when I picked him up I was handed a brown paper bag, told my total, brought me my dog and I walked out the door. No after care instructions no goodbye... nothing! When I arrived at home I noticed my dog was bleeding from the incision site, I gently wiped it up and laid him down, the Sunday I noticed my dog has red bloody puss coming down his leg, I emailed the "emergency email" in sunday morning I got no response, I cleaned it up a few hours later I notice a crazy amount of discharge, I emailed them again, ..... no response. Sunday night I had to take him to the animal hospital turns out he has a really bad infection that is draining into his leg his leg and abdomen was swollen, they gave him medication.. while I was at the animal hospital I finally got a response from Texas Human hero saying they are closed and will send this inquiry to the vet team..... Monday I heard nothing so I emailed again I got a response saying they are closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday and a refund was approved for the neuter. I didn't ask for a refund I wanted to know what was going on with my dog. My dog did have a testicle that had not dropped yet but I let it be know before I even scheduled the appointment. Here we are Wednesday and I get a call from the vet that did the procedure. She told me there were complications with his surgery and he had alot of bleeding and had to administer him medicine to stop the bleeding. I WOULD NOT TAKE MY DOG OR CAT OR ANYTHING LIVING, I tried to save money and they say you get what you pay for and I did. No empathy no compassion just plain old heart less people who claim to have a heart and love our animals. Lies! Please please do not bring your dog or cat here

    Poor baby

If you want a sick cat with a bullshit 14 day guarantee this is your place. Absolutely disgusting. Charged me $130 a adoption fee then gaslit me when I reach out two days later saying "he's just a chill kitten". This cat is sick. Never again. Adopt from someplace that actually cares about their pets.

Can't say enough about the service, care, and pricing. Wonderful organization that will soon be able to offer more comprehensive vet care! Yay for Texas Humane Heroes!

The process is super easy. I came in looking for one kitten but her foster decided to keep her at the last minute so I decided to look around and was immediately drawn to "Markie" he looked like a stuffed animal. He reminded me of a sad old man. Later found his eyes only look sad because of surgery he had to have. He let me pick him up and immediately started licking me and giving me love bites and I was SOLD!! The to find out that he's been there almost a year, I just had to give him his forever home! On the hour drive home he took a shot in the box‍ broke out and hopped up on my seats we didn't die tho! Lol

We took our Pomsky here to get his neuter service! It was the easiest process ever. Dropped off at 8am and he was ready by 1pm. They also offered pain meds and a cone of shame. He is recovering well. Thank you to the staff!

After researching local veterinary offices for neuter of our dog I found Texas Humane Heroes a non profit agency who were able to neuter our French bulldog for under $100! This included all pain medication and the "cone of shame". The following day after surgery they reached out to check on how he was doing. Great agency and great staff. They also have a low cost vaccine clinic as well as flea/tick medication too. Texas Humane Heroes will be my go to for vet care!

My dogs where dropped off at 8:55 am and I showed up at 3:00 PM because I hadn't gotten a call…read morethinking they didn't have my number or something . I was told they hadn't even started working on my two dogs but they where about to in a little bit because they where backed up . So I call at 5:22 to see how much longer being that they close at 5:30 and was told they where still backed up and hadn't started on my dogs yet and also they would be done in a while . Ok so I don't care what the excuse is ,I have no clue if the dogs are in cages with water or have been able to use the restroom outside their cages for at least 8 1/2 ho I've avoided places like PetSmart foe this same reason . They say oh your pets just fine we have water and we walk them when in fact they don't leave their cage for like 6 hours straight and don't have water bowls either . Even with water sitting in a cage waiting to be groomed from basically 9:00 am to past 5:30 is insane . At this point I'm within reason of being upset to a certain degree . I get they are behind maybe lack help or whatever but damn if you had too many cuts lined up for one day all you had to say was sorry we are booked and left it at that . I appreciate taking my dogs in but don't understand how a small poodle and Shih Tzu take 9 hours to get groomed . Even with doing one dog an hour which i doubt is the case you'd had to have had 15-18 dogs or more all before them if you had two groomers at the least . Even if you had only 12 dogs before them that's way to much do offer to cut in the time you guys open and close . If it's not then why is taking so long?

I am so thankful for these folks!…read more The short: * Convenient hours (I work 8-5 in South Austin and was able to drop off and pick my foster up without missing work) * Great pricing - they are so unbelievably good to us * Thorough and impressive bedside manner. It's clear they care about all animals! The long: I foster greyhounds for Austin Greyhound Adoption and even though I live super South, we just started taking all of our foster hounds to Great Oaks. GOAH offers us an incredible package for the dogs we take in, which in and of itself was hard to find. Greyhounds make great pets but have unique issues that make them diva patients from time to time. They're very sensitive to meds and their bloodwork looks different than most dogs and they're a lot to take on. I've asked my mutt's vet down South along with several others if they offer rescue pricing and they've all flat out said no thank you. Great Oaks welcomed us in with open arms. My current foster had an absolutely atrocious mouth. Poor girl really needed a thorough dental during her spay. When I brought her in for her spa day I let GOAH know that her teeth wre my biggest concern during her spay/microchip/exam. I was nervous because I knew she was going to need an extensive bit of dental work and any time you bring an animal in for so many things especially at a "rescue rate" you worry that your pup won't be a priority or will not get the full and necessary treatment. Man, was I wrong to worry. Dr. Willis called me right after my foster girl's procedure to let me know how she was doing and the extent of her operation. Dr. Willis didn't know this, but a few days earlier I had found out my last foster (I had her for 6 months) had passed away very suddenly shortly after getting a home. Because of that news, I was very nervous about my current foster girls' procedure. Greyhounds are extra sensitive to most things including anesthesia. Dr. Willis was extremely thorough in explaining what she had to do and even wrote out a tooth chart for my foster babe to make sure her potential new home would have good records. She walked me through all of her medications and when another rescue volunteer had to pick her up she walked her through her post op recovery as well. My own dog actually had a dental at my vet down south a few says prior to my foster's operation and I was concerned about the possibility they could pass infection to each other by sharing a water dish and Dr. Willis even took the time to thoughtfully answer that question for me. I cannot say enough good things. I'm so impressed at how thorough they were and how much effort they put into our pups even though many other vets would consider rescues up for adoption a lesser priority compared to normal patients or flat out say no to rescue pricing. The care my foster received from GOAH was on par and maybe even better than the care I received for my own dog's dental surgery the week prior at my regular vet down south. Definitely bring your pets here. They are good at what they do and they have a heart for helping! Thank you so much GOAH - we are so lucky to have you!!!

The doctors are great, always helpful and kind but some of the staff definitely can be a problem…read more Been coming to this vet clinc for 15+ yrs with multiple pets and never had a problem till past 8 months. Some of the Vet techs don't fully communicate with the doctors and other techs causing large miscommunications. After all these years I am having to change my dogs to a new vet so they can receive the care they need. Very disappointing. Hopefully they make some changes and things improve.

Although I admit I was frustrated I was so happy when I found "Britches" (now named Penny), on the website. Within a week we were set up with a trial visit with her at our home. When we first met Penny, we were surprised at how friendly she was. Her bio stated that she was very bossy and might have an issue with children, but this was likely due to the severe ear and skin infection she had when she was surrendered. Penny is now a healthy and fun loving pug. She is kind to children and will voluntarily sit on any lap available. She is four years old but she is as playful as a puppy. She enjoys her squirrel toys, playing tug of war, and rolling in the grass. We are so grateful to PRA for giving us the chance to fall in love with Penny. Yes, the process takes forever and can be frustrating when all you want is a pug, but it is worth it. Also, understand that this nonprofit organization is made up of all volunteers. These people work hard and though it can be a taxing process, they are volunteering their time in order to get these fur babies a home. Once you are approved the process is so fast.
