We went too meet dogs and cats as my daughter loves them, we cats section was eat and tidy and comfortable for cats as well as visitors. Dogs section was smelly though but they take care of each dog very well saw them taking dogs for walks . filling their water bowl and food bowl even helped in sharing information about dogs, We met A dog name Moon. Rescued a Great Dane that wasn't in the best shape and needed vaccines ASAP. I called around and drove to several businesses before landing at Texas Humane Heroes. Everything was nice, clean, and organized. I've only had the Great Dane for a few hours so as we're learning each other, it was a task to get him settled and inside to get care. The team knew exactly what to do and how to handle the situation. We were out like we were never in and the price was more than fair. They even gave him a prescription for his "hot spot" after they loved on him. 10/10 would recommend. read more

NOT A NO KILL SHELTER. Volunteered at this place for many years. They basically fired me. No communication, just an email. The dogs they get are adoptable for the most part. They keep unadoptable in a building they will not show you. Claiming these are sick dogs. Behavior cases are euthanized. Puppies of moms being spayed are destroyed. Texas Humane Heroes is one of the incredible animal rescue organizations in the Leander area. Although II have left a prior written review, we have utilized their services many times. They spay and neuter dogs and cats for a reasonable fee. They also have vet tech appointments had an affordable rate. You can take your pet in for vaccines and I really like the fact that you can make an appointment for that although they have certain times that are available for walk-ins as well. They have a well used building at the end of a very long driveway. One of the things I want to be sure to say is that there is a beautiful large new building up toward the front of the property and it looks like it's almost completed. We could see lots of kennels installed inside it in different areas, so although we are not certain, we believe it's going to be a new location for the rescues at Texas Humane Heroes! It appears to be an air-conditioned facility, which will be wonderful (especially in the summer ) because currently dogs are housed primarily in outdoor kennels-That they try to protect from the harshest weather. This weekend we attended a Chili Cook Off, which is an annual event supporting the facility and the animals !!!! It was the first chili cookoff I have ever attended in all of my 72 years. It was wonderful there were about a dozen different groups that cooked and distributed tastings of chili . Between them were a few of the dog services available for training, boarding, and daycare in the Leander area. Admission was $25 regardless of age . Calendars and T-shirts were also available for purchase, we actually bought 2 (two) Of the cups that were available for $10 each (and were an awesome value for anyone who chose to drink beer and wine) as those were included along with soda pop in the price of the cup!!! I really have to commend the teams in the chili cook off !!!! There was a wide variety and we didn't taste anything we thought was not in the "good" taste category. Of course we had three tickets to vote with and they went to our top three chili tastes which we felt were in the "excellent " taste category . The cloudy humid weather without rain was very tolerable. I'm hoping to see a post of the money generated by this event. By the way, they also had a silent auction with quite a variety of items that could be bid on. Once you buy your ticket, you get access to it. Extremely disappointed by the lack of internal communication between staff, and their apparent inability to read a simple note left by one staff member on the stack of pre-filled adoption paperwork. Which allowed a kitten to be adopted right out from under me at the moment I was there to sign the paperwork. The policy of not holding adoptions, when I was willing to put money down, and/or do whatever was necessary to get this kitten (Hancock) is a terrible policy. Here is a simple solution.. Allow people to put money down to pre-adopt! Set the amount to be 1.5x the adoption fee. Then set a date for adoption. If the person adopts, that can be refunded the deposit, or given the option to donate. If the person doesn't show up, then that deposit is forfeit. It should not be that difficult.. But since some of your staff apparently cannot read a simple note or communicate effectively, maybe implementing such a policy would be difficult. I would take my donation back if I could, I am so disappointed in you. Until you change your policy, I cannot in any good conscience recommend THH. And I will no longer be donating. read more

On Friday August 22, 2025 I took my dog to get neutered here, I picked him up around 4:15, when I picked him up I was handed a brown paper bag, told my total, brought me my dog and I walked out the door. No after care instructions no goodbye... nothing! When I arrived at home I noticed my dog was bleeding from the incision site, I gently wiped it up and laid him down, the Sunday I noticed my dog has red bloody puss coming down his leg, I emailed the "emergency email" in sunday morning I got no response, I cleaned it up a few hours later I notice a crazy amount of discharge, I emailed them again, ..... no response. Sunday night I had to take him to the animal hospital turns out he has a really bad infection that is draining into his leg his leg and abdomen was swollen, they gave him medication.. while I was at the animal hospital I finally got a response from Texas Human hero saying they are closed and will send this inquiry to the vet team..... Monday I heard nothing so I emailed again I got a response saying they are closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday and a refund was approved for the neuter. I didn't ask for a refund I wanted to know what was going on with my dog. My dog did have a testicle that had not dropped yet but I let it be know before I even scheduled the appointment. Here we are Wednesday and I get a call from the vet that did the procedure. She told me there were complications with his surgery and he had alot of bleeding and had to administer him medicine to stop the bleeding. I WOULD NOT TAKE MY DOG OR CAT OR ANYTHING LIVING, I tried to save money and they say you get what you pay for and I did. No empathy no compassion just plain old heart less people who claim to have a heart and love our animals. Lies! Please please do not bring your dog or cat here read more

Love love love. They have such caring and helpful volunteers at Texas Humane Hero's. We adopted our puppy Wally from here this Saturday and we did look and play with other puppies first, and the volunteers were patient with us and let us take our time to make the right decision for our family. I got the vibe from most of the volunteers that they knew and cared for all of the dogs that we looked at. When we mentioned who we were looking at or wanted to look at, they would say something about that particular dog that indicated that they had a relationship with that animal. The adoption process was about what you'd expect, but upon the finalization of adoption, they gave us vouchers for local pet supply store & vet clinic! We went here to find a new pet. The dog kennels were very clean and the lady was very informative. The other building had the cats but they were inside of different rooms and we had to wash our hands several times despite not touching any animals. It seemed excessive. After researching local veterinary offices for neuter of our dog I found Texas Humane Heroes a non profit agency who were able to neuter our French bulldog for under $100! This included all pain medication and the "cone of shame". The following day after surgery they reached out to check on how he was doing. Great agency and great staff. We adopted from here back in 2010 and had a great experience when Ron M was in charge. My husband and I have always adopted the most "un-adoptable" because there is no such thing as a "lost cause". We take on the medical messes and breeds that are stigmatized. 9 months ago we adopted a little wreck of a dog. He was a mess. Malnourished, horrible dental, completely undomesticated..... and basically just a broken little spirit. Stick a bow on him, we'll take him! They made us sign a bunch of waivers regarding his teeth and other issues. No big deal. What IS a big deal is they told us he was "3 to 4 years old" when we adopted him 9 months ago. We have now had 3 different veterinarians tell us he's between 8 and 9 years old. That kind of lack of truthfulness on the part of the shelter is unconscionable. The vets have all said there is NO WAY they could have determined him to be 3 or 4 years old considering he already has early stage cataracts and other tell tale signs. We would have adopted him even if they had been honest with us about his age.... we adopt the sick, broken and elderly without hesitation. But to he so dishonest in the process does not help the pet nor the new owner/adopter. This actually sets up the potential for failure for all involved. Some people can't afford the expense of vet care for a senior. Some people can't emotionally sign up for adopting a pet that they will only have for a couple years. Some people, like my husband and I CAN.... and we would have adopted him anyway...... but that doesn't mean we don't have the RIGHT to know what we are taking on. It's shady. We have had 3 different vets all agree there was NO WAY this dog could have possibly been assessed as 3 or 4 years old. I understand a no kill shelter wants to get their kiddos adopted out ASAP to make room for others, but it's bad practice to not be honest about the basics of the animals they are adopting out. He also had a bad neuter job done and will now be on Proin for the remainder of his life due to urinary incontinence. We love our little dude to the moon and back. It's just been an expensive and depressing experience to ultimately find out we aren't going to have 10 years with him..... we will be lucky to have 5. read more

I suggested that I wasn't 100% sure my family was ready for a dog, but we were here to check it out. After telling him exactly what our family was like with 3 teens, hectic schedules etc, he suggested that we visit with one of the sweet dogs they had. I was skeptical, because I wasn't sure I was ready for a dog. Well, instantly it was obvious that we were ready for a dog and more importantly, the sweetest girl. First and foremost, this shelter gets dogs and cats that are about to be killed from other kill shelters around TEXAS and other states and they SAVE THEIR LIVES. Quite often they come from hoarding situations or worse. So while they look skinny or even sick they are on track to a much better life. Maybe some folks could work on customer service but towards the animals, they are wonderful loving people. I would much prefer they are better with animals than people. I love the fact that they want 21 year old adopters and up. When folks are under 21 they may make hasty decisions based on the cuteness of the dog/cat when their living situations don't support having a pet. As for dirty kennels, these dogs are nervous and often have loose poopies. Their kennels are cleaned quite often. My advice to those between 18 and 21 is to volunteer here. Its amazingly rewarding. read more

My roommate and I had our hearts set on finding a furry addition for about 6 months. We looked at several shelters but couldn't find a kitten we absolutely loved. Out of curiosity on our day off, we headed over to Texas Humane Heroes and were greeted by a friendly and attentive staff who introduced us to the sweetest and most loving adult cat. We always thought a kitten was what we wanted, but we fell in love with her and began the adoption process immediately. Not only was the adoption quick yet thorough, but the woman went over every detail of the cat with us that she knew of. All of the animals come spayed/neutered, vaccinations are up to date, and they come microchipped. She gave us all the microchip information, vaccination records and our kitty's bio from the previous shelter she was in. Our adoption came with a $50 certificate to Fire House veterinary office, a bag of the food she was eating at the shelter, and a folder redeemable at PetCo for a coupon book!(PetCo gave us free food and cat litter in addition to the coupons!) Let me start off by saying that I CALLED this shelter beforehand to take me through the process of adopting and their rules and policies for adopting just to make sure there are no confusions before driving an hour away to this shelter. After arriving we couldn't find any help for about 15 minutes, we also noticed that most of the dogs were really skinny and peeing all over their kennels. After we met the puppy and made the decision to adopt they told us we had to be 21 and up (which they did not mention when I asked about their adopting requirements!!) after that I waited 40+ minutes for my older brother whom I live with and was adopting the dog with to begin with, since he is 21, and the employees told me it was fine to wait so we did. After he arrived, we were with the dog for about 30+ minutes just watching her in the kennel because no one was helping us, AT ALL, even an employee who knew the situation who had told us that they would help us right away didn't even help. After 2 long hours of waiting we finally got the paper work and went into the room to try and adopt the poor puppy that is such in a bad environment, super skinny and in a dirty kennel. We were more than half way through the adoption papers when the "on site manager" came in and told us to stop and that there was no adoption today, she tried to tell us our situation and said that my brother couldn't adopt the dog even though the dog was for US, and that basically we were lying, when 1. she did not know our situation because she never helped us in the first place, and 2. we had already been half way through the adoption process, and after going back and fourth that me and my brother were adopting the dog together, and calling her out that she KNOWINGLY wasted almost 3 hours of our day all she had to say was "ok well there's not going to be an adoption today" Worst customer service I've literally ever received, specially when trying to do my part on rescuing an obviously in need puppy. If you're trying to adopt, this isn't the shelter to come to, they obviously do not care or want to let go any of their dogs to a better home. Zero stars if I could, there is literally nothing ok about my experience. read more

I found a dog that has some problems with his hind legs making it hard to run or jump. He walked a little funny and was so loving like he was starving for attention. I have never had good experiences with animal shelters before and was expecting the same. I had him for a few days but became very attatched to him and really didn't want to. I was wrong in what I thought about Texas Humane Heroes, they were absolute professionals and went above and beyond what I expected. They were fostering him out as soon as he got a check up for a clean bill of health. I also asked if he isn't adopted in a week to 10 days if they would call me and I would get the place I live to allow me to get him. The place is clean and doesn't have that smell you normally find in shelters, The staff was professional, caring and informative for any questions or concerns you may have. I understand that many people get frustrated with their services. But to acquire a different perspective, try to volunteer there. You will see their organization with different eyes. Indeed, they need all the volunteer help they can get. It's also worthy to mention that originally they used to be associated with the Humane Society of the United States, but after that executive payout scandal, THH quickly broke ties with them and reinvented themselves. Many years ago, we adopted a dog there (Valerie), and they made an honest mistake of not spaying her. Then, she went into heat... It was fun to so see all the boy dogs in the neighborhood trying to flirt with her. :) She eventually got spayed, never had puppies, and went on to live a happy existence. Even after that, I've never written them off. After all, we had friends that have volunteered there for a long time, and we also had a chance to do it so. It's so sad to see so many pets in distress, getting ill and being all alone in this world, all the while being completely hopeless. They have plenty of cases like that. So, they do their part to help. Now, take their approach in comparison with the ones adopted by our county pet shelter. On that shelter, every animal has an expiration date. Either they get adopted or they're gone from this earth. Extremely sad, ugly, and preventable. Please consider volunteering and keep in mind to spay and/or neuter your kitten or puppy, to help with the pet homeless problem. read more

We adopted a puppy on Saturday afternoon and by Monday morning he was very,very sick. He was diagnosed with Parvo and died the next Saturday. We bring home a new puppy, kids get attached. We only have him 48 hours before he is back at the vet in quarantine and then he passes away. Their reaction? Oh we will let you adopt another puppy for free.. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Why in the world would I want to adopt another puppy from here after this experience??? I have upset kids, another dog at home that's been exposed to parvo and not to even mention all the other puppies around our poor little guy in the kennels before we took him home that are probably all sick now too. Last but not least, I paid $275 for this experience. I want a refund and I would never, ever recommend anyone to adopt from this facility. Absolutely disgraceful. read more
